I was looking to get an eye exam and contact lenses. I looked first at optometrists in Jamaica Plain and Brookline with more Yelp reviews, but which also had several days (or even a couple weeks) wait to get an appointment. I called Arcade Optical and got an appointment the same day for my vision test. Then the following day they called saying I could come in for the contacts! Dr. L was very patient in teaching me as I struggled at first with trying to put them on and take them off. And I got a free case for my glasses on the way out. Had my first appointment at Arcade Optical this morning. It was wonderful! From the initial setting up of my appointment to paying my bill at the end, I had a great experience. The Dr (I'm sorry, I don't remember your name) was thorough, and fully made sure I was seeing the clearest possible. As a side benefit, he had fabulous taste in frames! Holy crap. These people are awesome. I went here after being used-car-salesmaned at lenscrafters, and they totally took care of me. I dont have any experience from here with any kind of eye exam, as I walked in with my prescription. Anyway, the woman (whos name I didnt catch) was super helpful with finding the right pair of glasses for me, even though I am insanely picky about them. The Dr also helped, and together we found a pair of glasses that I liked, and fit me perfectly. I just picked up my glasses today, and on top of it all had an awesome conversation about some random stuff with them. Highly recommended in my experience, they are two great people and I will be going back next time I need some facial optics. read more

This is only my 2nd review on Yelp though I have used it for years. Had such good experience at this little eye glass shop located in Coolidge Corner just had to let others know. Went in yesterday morn, ask if they could fit me in and sure enough, they were very accommodating to this drop-in. As I had some time to kill before haircut appt, proceeded to look at their selection of glasses, which for such a small shop is quite extensive. They were both very helpful in going through their selection and picking glasses they thought would fit my particular facial features well. Ended up selecting some very cool looking tortoise shell glasses with blue highlights from a company in Barcelona - have o love Spanish styling. Came back after haircut to get eye exam which was very thorough. And at the end of it all, the price was reasonable, they take BCBS-MA and I left with a smile on my face looking forward to receiving my new eyeglasses in about 7-10 days. Can't recommend this place enough - they really are very good and for value and service, best place I've been to in the Boston area. read more

I think the office manager is engaging and Dr. Lakher is nice, although a little on the quiet side. I have been here twice for an exam over a period of two years until just recently. Just wanted to mention the exam might not be the most thorough. Recently it was suggested to me that I see a corneal specialist by another doctor. Turns out I have a condition in my eye related to excess blood vessels. The corneal specialist suggested that contact lens use may exacerbate it. I may have to go in for surgery but for now she is watching it. Upon reflecting upon past visits, I mentioned to the opthamologist that I have been hearing about this "neovascularization" for the past 12 or so years. Then I realized the only optometrist who never mentioned it was Dr. Lakher. It may be just me, but I like to be inundated with information during my dr's visits, especially when it comes to my eyes. read more

Still five stars, nearly three years later. Same high quality service, same high quality glasses. I note that the yelp robot wrongly removed my August 10, 2012 review of Arcade Optical. Just in case any HUMAN reads this, I am most definitely REAL, I have been a yelper since May of 2008, I have submitted multiple reviews, and I am insulted that yelp would remove my earlier recommendation with no notice, no email, no effort to contact me, and no recourse other than a blank submission form with no apparent confirmation. If I were reviewing yelp itself right now, I'd give yelp ONE star, for insulting and rude behavior towards those of us who occasionally take the time to write a review. read more

My guess is this business has asked friends and family to leave reviews to inflate their score because we had to report them to our insurance provider. My husband and I needed a quick eye exam to order reading glasses. When I called to make an appt, the woman working was talking to someone else and clearly having a personal conversation, like, should I call back when you feel like working? We arrived to our appt early and waited for at least 15 minutes past the appt time. The doctor is a weird breed to say the least. Socially awkward and just off. We both did our eye exams and then when we asked for the prescription, he just recited it to us. I literally wrote it down in my phone notes and asked him to confirm it. I asked the woman if they had any reading glasses in the store to try and she responded rudely saying "of course not, they wouldn't have those in the store". It's a glasses store so... It was very uncomfortable watching her be equally rude to a family with small children who came in and another woman. Next we went to Warby Parker and tried glasses and they had to call this doc to confirm prescriptions. WP said the guy somehow remembered off the top of his head our scripts and insisted on telling them over the phone. He gave the wrong scripts to WP who graciously are taking back the glasses and making the correction after we got completely new (and totally different) prescriptions at Boston Eye Care (Brookline). This guy needs to retire and take that horrible lady that works for him with! Not a qualified professional, no record keeping of patients and rudeeee! Don't waste your time and sadly, other companies money making the glasses with incorrect prescriptions. read more

Terrible. High prices, poor service (didn't check glasses before calling to say they were ready - something had been done incorrectly and the frames did not hold the lenses - this for full price!), not reliably open when say they are, my husband says the frames he got there are the worst he has ever owned (worn glasses for more than 30 years) - he is constantly fixing them himself. Three members of my family (self, spouse, parent) have given their business to Arcade Optical and each of us very disappointed. If you go for an eye exam, the Rx is good, but buy your lenses and frames elsewhere, maybe someplace nearby where you get them in an hour and customer service is outstanding. read more

I've been wearing glasses all my life and was extremely pleased with the service and selection at Arcade optical. The folks there were low key and very helpful--I gave them an idea of what I wanted and they found half a dozen options from among their large selection in a matter of minutes. All of the options were great and they were very skilled at helping me choose a great pair of glasses that were distinctive, stylish, great fitting and priced competitively. All in all an exemplary experience. An added bonus was their participation in EyeMed, a discount program offered by my health insurer. read more

Very small, older equipment. Provide very limited feedback about eye exam results. Poor communication by optometrist. Used my contact lens fitting benefit without making it clear to me that I now lost my eyeglass benefit for the year, which was a big problem for me. After a brief and rushed exam, tried pushing sunglasses on my partner. read more

I loved this place! Dr. Lakher was thorough, very professional and I felt well-taken care of for my eye exam. He accepted my insurance which was such a relief because when I called Lense Crafters they declined my insurance even though they were obligated to accept it. I have been going to Arcade Optical for 5 years. Dr Lakher is fantastic. He is extremely detail oriented and takes his time with each customer. He has excellent taste in the style of glasses he carries. He helped me pick out the t2's I now wear. He dose not try to sell you the most expensive pair of glasses you try on. I always try to shop at unique independently owned stores. This is gem! read more

I've been wearing glasses and contacts for about six years, and this was the best optical experience I've had in that whole time. The doctor was nice (and yes, quirky as others have said - but I like to think I am, too), and the lady at the front desk/optical shop was, too. My eyes hadn't changed since my previous year's exam (elsewhere) so I was offered a prescription for the same daily contacts I had been wearing previously, but those are incredibly expensive so I opted for two-week contacts instead. They ordered them for me and I was able to pick them up two days later. Because I didn't need new glasses again this year, the doctor explained that I could use my frames benefit for prescription sunglasses instead. But since I almost always wear my contacts, I don't need prescription lenses in my sunglasses. "Even better!" he said. I could use the frames benefit for regular sunglasses, completely covered. So I opted for a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Both he and the woman (I think his wife?) helped me pick out the pair that looked best on my narrow face/big head. I assumed I would have to order these and wait for them like the contacts, but I was able to leave with them that day. I paid my $40 co-pay and got an eye exam, six months worth of contacts, and a $200 pair of sunglasses. Hopefully he doesn't retire before I'm due for my next exam in 2016. read more

I have been going to Arcade Optical for probably 20 years. Dr. Lakher is the best optometrist I have ever encountered. He is so intelligent and careful, the prescription is always spot-on perfect. He and Joanie are honest when you're picking out frames that will be becoming, and now that I've found the perfect ones, they never push me to get new ones when I have a new prescription. Even after 20 years, they are still happy to put new lenses in the old frames. Dr. Lakher was also incredibly kind and generous in his care of my aging mother, going out of his way to help her failing vision. read more

The previous provider I've used prescribed the wrong base curve when I decided to start using contact lenses...my eyes were in pain until I came to this pace when I decided to chose a different provider. They have identified the problem quickly, prescribed the right curve and things have been great ever since! I came here by default because LensCrafters wouldn't bill my insurance company for a standard eye exam due to it requiring "extra paperwork" and boy am I glad I found this place! Thorough, accommodating, and professional. It was clear the doctor is passionate about what he does, which is everything you want in a doc. Also, the charming woman in the front makes you feel like a regular patron - even if you're a first timer. Will return again next year for my annual exam! read more

We had a great experience being helped at Arcade Optical. We came to Dr. Lakher to get a new pair of glasses for my daughter with a prescription in hand from another optometrist which turned out to be incorrect. When the glasses came and my daughter could not see well I called the original optometrist who gave the prescription. Out of luck, he was on vacation while my daughter was to fly back to university out of state. Dr. Lakher went out of his way to help us out of a bad situation. He checked that the glasses were made according to the prescription, he then checked my daughter's vision and corrected prescription we brought in. The glasses were re-made and turned around quickly. They now work great for my daughter, all thanks to courtesy of Dr. Lakher. read more

Arcade Optical is hands down the best place in town to buy glasses! I came in the first time worried that I was tight on cash and they helped me find a really beautiful pair of glasses and then gave me a HUGE discount. Unfortunately I had to come back within a couple of months because my new glasses were stolen, and the woman helped me find the perfect pair. LET HER HELP YOU CHOOSE YOUR FRAMES!! TRUST HER! She has an amazing eye for face shapes and knows her merchandise perfectly. I consider myself pretty picky style-wise and was hard-set on trying on every single pair in the store (I even brought my husband as a consultant), but am SO glad I took her advice, the pair she picked out were by FAR the most flattering. And they gave me another discount!! They're family-owned, friendly, knowledgeable, and have a wonderfully eclectic collection of glasses in all price ranges. In my book, this is one of the few hard-to-come-by quality establishments in the Boston area. read more

Some of the other reviews here made me nervous about trying this place, especially because I've had bad experiences with optical shops in the past, but I went for it (none of the places that took my insurance had perfect reviews) and had a fantastic experience with Arcade. I was pleasantly surprised with the selection of frames. They also had a few drawers of frames, not on display, specifically made by Davis, which are free with Davis insurance (I wished the lady had asked me about my insurance and directed me to those from the beginning, it was only after my appointment that the doctor mentioned those). Other reviews mention the lady being pushy about her opinions about glasses, which was true, but it didn't bother me. I appreciated her helping me find frames and offering her opinion, which I did agree with most of the time. The doctor is indeed a little awkward, as mentioned in many reviews, but I found him to be very nice and appreciated his answers to my questions and his explanations of what he was doing. I was surprised that after the appointment he offered some very useful opinions about the frames I was choosing between (e.g. which might be stronger plastic, which would have better peripheral version). Then once I chose a pair, he did some measurements of the glasses and my eyes before putting in the order. I've never gotten that much time and attention from an eye doc before. When I went back to pick up my glasses, I had a little trouble adjusting to the new prescription. The doc told me to have a seat for a few minutes to let my eyes adjust and see how it felt then. Again, have never gotten that kind of attention picking up glasses! My eyes did adjust and the new glasses are perfect. Really great experience all around. read more
