With moreland working the Covid unit at work and finishing school, and Blake having knee surgery, neither were able to come up before now to start making plans. Let me just say, I am very disappointed that the woman won't give the deposit back from Bonita Valley Dance Barn and wedding Venue. The pictures on Facebook make it look spectacular, but in person it is a dump. I get you are in the country and it's a barn, but who knew we were going to have to drive past a makeshift mobile home trailer with what looked like a junk yard parked outside, with campers, tractors, chicken coops, all around. The barn itself was covered in cobwebs (although they said there was a wedding there last weekend) yeah, right! And the chairs and media equipment had inches of thick dust. The netting draped through the rafters looked yellow as if they hadn't been changed in years and they were infested with bug carcasses. The light bulbs were scantily present and as you walk in there is a trap on the ground. The owner said it was for a "skunk " that was loose in the barn. Gross!!! Along with the skunk, there were rabbits running around loose in the barn. The smell was indicative of something either living in there or had died in there. The kitchen was a joke. If a caterer came in there they would run the other way. There was no oven and a refrigerator not big enough to hold a gallon of sweet tea. Walk outside and the grass is knee high and around the wooden cross were wooden pews that were rotten, gray and dilapidated. The furniture in the "bride's" dressing area was a couch dated back to the 60's and the fabric was so dirty, I was afraid to touch it. The tables to serve on were pallets nailed to four wooden posts. They were uneven and rough. I could go on and on, but I don't want to seem like a bride momzilla . I just want people to be kind and give this young couple their money back. Oh yes, and she said to make sure that I added that the cost was $710 for a 2-day venue...Thursday and Friday... well, Now we all know why...we were paying for SHIT and shit is cheap! I would be embarrassed to have family and friends come to this place!

The owners live on site and they let me and my kids go visit their puppies and play in the puppies area/run house. They are very kind and spoke to us often throughout. They even offered to go to the store to pick AA batteries for us and a couple other things instead of us going to the store and purchasing it from them directly that was very kind and going above. The only reason for the four star is, I did call them to get additional towels for the cottage house we rented. Whoever answered the phone had hesitation in their voice, and seemed annoyed that I was asking for extra towels. They asked how many people were in our party because they saw a lot of people.kitchen told them yes we rented the cottage house +3 primitive cabins we had a large party, but we were not over using any space. He thought hesitation in his voice and I explained to him we only had two towels and he was more than welcome to come check if he doubted us he said oh that's strangely usually put four or five in the house I said well, they didn't then they offered to bring more as much as we all spent for the entire weekend. It was a little frustrating how we were treated in that specific scenario. They had paddle boats you could rent and we rented two. It was a decently priced 35 for four hours. They also have horseback riding and a couple other things that you can pay additional for. The cottage was fully stocked. I love this. I enjoy planning my own winery snacks. I was bummed when many wineries quit allowing food because they opened kitchens. So if I have to pay $30+ for food. I'm buying less wine. Breakfast was freshly made and also to note, one of the best parts of my birthday getaway. The inn keepers were super welcoming and hospitable, making for a warm, comfortable birthday stay. We had booked the Old Caledonian and had an absolutely amazing stay. Since there's not many dining options in the area, we added on a made to order dinner, which ended up being the best meal during our weeklong trip in Missouri. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with a flowering garden, gazebo, magnolia tree, koi pond, hot tub and sauna. We spent our evening out in the yard watching fireflies and listening to their fountain. Inside, every corner is packed with antiques and vintage charm. Most rooms feature a bathtub but to shower (at least in the upstairs rooms,) there is a communal bathroom. We happened to be the only guests so it was fine. It also featured a library with plenty of books to read and board games to play. The owners were absolutely lovely people and cooked us wonderful meals, delivered with attentive service. We were able to make requests for vegetarian food and they prepared a delightful veggie curry and green goddess quinoa bowl for dinner. For breakfast we were served yogurt and fruit, veggie quickie and some lovely homemade scones. There are their own handmade lavender products for sale as well. Beds and pillows were super comfy and they had some great green tea bath products for use. We had such a magical time enjoying the early summer in Caledonia and the folks here were such a big part of that. I was approved to return in May 2023 by management, so I spent countless hours organizing the schedule, finding staff, and advertising only to be alerted mid December 2023 that H&M Retreats will no longer host my event. This is very unfortunate. Sadly, I must now spend more of my time refunding and contacting attendees.
