My stay here with some friends was a special time, thanks to the owners of this wonderful B&B. My friend, who lives in St. Louis, has family familiar with the area and recommended we stop in Caledonia to visit the quaint town. We had booked the Old Caledonian and had an absolutely amazing stay. Since there's not many dining options in the area, we added on a made to order dinner, which ended up being the best meal during our weeklong trip in Missouri. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with a flowering garden, gazebo, magnolia tree, koi pond, hot tub and sauna. We spent our evening out in the yard watching fireflies and listening to their fountain. Inside, every corner is packed with antiques and vintage charm. Most rooms feature a bathtub but to shower (at least in the upstairs rooms,) there is a communal bathroom. We happened to be the only guests so it was fine. It also featured a library with plenty of books to read and board games to play. The owners were absolutely lovely people and cooked us wonderful meals, delivered with attentive service. We were able to make requests for vegetarian food and they prepared a delightful veggie curry and green goddess quinoa bowl for dinner. For breakfast we were served yogurt and fruit, veggie quickie and some lovely homemade scones. There are their own handmade lavender products for sale as well. Beds and pillows were super comfy and they had some great green tea bath products for use. We had such a magical time enjoying the early summer in Caledonia and the folks here were such a big part of that. I was searching for a place to spend my birthday, something different than my norm. I was seeking a relaxing experience with some shopping. This place exceeded my expectations. Upon booking, you choose your room. My room was great, the mattress perfect, the claw foot tub was amazing, mini fridge, WiFi, Keurig, everything I needed in one room and tastefully decorated! Downstairs there was a library with board games and books. A yoga studio upstairs. Hot-tub and sauna in the back of the property. Breakfast was freshly made and also to note, one of the best parts of my birthday getaway. The inn keepers were super welcoming and hospitable, making for a warm, comfortable birthday stay. We stopped in to buy a quiche and bottle of wine to-go. (Highly recommend the Edg-Clif rosè!) Ended up staying and walking around to see the farm animals - peacocks, chickens, goats, sheep. Mr. Gobbles, the resident turkey was the most social turkey we've ever met! The kids loved playing with the kittens. The quiche was divine! Michael uses fresh eggs and handmade goat cheese and makes the most delicious flaky crust. read more

My husband and I chose Old Caledonian for our honeymoon after our October wedding, and we could not have been more impressed. It was the PERFECT getaway, for so many reasons: - I have to start with the FOOD. We dined in for 2 dinners, 3 breakfasts, and 3 tea-times. We had some of the best meals we have ever tasted. Chef Jon in rural Missouri is hands-down the best vegan chef we've ever encountered, and we've eaten at the best vegan restaurants in Chicago, Atlanta, etc. His dishes were innovative, hearty, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully plated. If we lived closer, we'd go all the time just to eat!! - The lodgings. We stayed in the Heather room, which was stocked with tons of amenities (robes, slippers, ear plugs, shampoo, bath salts, even a bidet). Since the house is on the older side, we thought it might be noisy or creaky, but our room was quiet and comfortable. The decorations made it feel cozy and homey. - The property. Beyond your room, there is so much to explore throughout the house and its yard. We enjoyed the hot tub, which was easy to use and so refreshing on a cool fall day. We spent time perusing books and board games in the library. We watched the fish swim in the koi pond from the lovely gazebo. The entire property just makes you feel at peace. - The location. I will be honest... Caledonia is tiny. Population ~130. We figured we'd take a walk around town, but it only took 20 minutes to go up and down the main street. However, we did find lots of gems! We found some antiques and snacks at the General Store, and ate at a local cafe (FDC). The best aspect of the location, however, is the proximity to hiking! We explored both Elephant Rocks and Johnson's Shut-Ins, both of which were a short drive away. In October, rural Missouri was GORGEOUS with the bright fall leaves on every tree. For a city dweller, it will give you some much-needed fresh air. - The hospitality. Jon and Penny are the best hosts. I was worried that a B&B (it was our first) would not feel "anonymous" enough for me, when compared to a hotel. On the contrary, it felt so warm and inviting to be welcomed into this B&B. There was only one other couple staying there, due to COVID-era capacity limits, but we felt like we had plenty of our own space. Jon was always around to refill our coffees, answer questions about the area, or tell fascinating stories about his life (Tip: ask about Antarctica). He was so accommodating and made us feel very special. Overall, we were so happy to find this hidden gem! We had a lovely and peaceful weekend at the Old Caledonian. Michael and Frank could not have been more welcoming, and the food was top notch. They are very flexible with dietary restrictions. We are vegan they accommodated us with delicious breakfasts and a scrumptious dinner. The area is close to several state parks and a winery, so there's lots to do when you're not chilling in your unique and lovingly decorated room. We had a wonderful stay. The food-both dinner and breakfast-was spectacular. The butternut squash soup was silky and luxuriant. The homemade yogurt was a real plus as a topper. The chili corn bread pie was super good-I ate way too much but enjoyed it so. Afternoon tea was a delight. Jon, the proprietor, was so kind and gracious. Very safe during COVID. read more

We just stayed here for our anniversary. Although the ownership has changed, we were delighted to find great service and delicious food. Mike phoned ahead of time to ask about any dietary restrictions, since they are no longer strictly vegan. We are vegan, so he prepared us a delicious vegan dinner of a vegetable couscous, lentil soup, sourdough bread and snickerdoodle crock cake served warm! He still has all of the previous owner's recipes as well as his own. We enjoyed many of the nearby wineries, the quaint downtown area and visited nearby Elephant Rock State Park and the Johnson Shut-In's. This is the perfect place to stay! The beds are really comfortable and I loved the sheets! We stayed in The Caroline Room. Everything was very clean and the rooms are quite large and each has its own bathroom. Penny, Jon and the Hawthorne Room were awesome! They took an old home and put some love into it making it possible for people like us to take a trip back in time for a weekend. With all of the amenities that we are accustomed to today, they didn't take the easy route. This includes a Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress, "Comphy" Sheets (which they sell and we purchased ), WiFi, fridge of bevs, and surprise baked goods in your room. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention John's cooking. Chef level quality, probably because he is one. Great place to stay when visiting Shut-Ins and Elephant Rocks. Come check it out! read more

My husband and I wanted a quick get away to check out the Johnson Shut-ins, so I found this quaint B&B online and was so excited to stay there. Jon & Penny are delightful hosts. Super friendly and very accommodating! So much so that Jon picked up my favorite soft drink to have while there for our short stay. One of the main reasons why I prefer a B&B over a hotel is the personal service and staying at the Inn did not disappoint when it came to that. We love old charming homes, and the Old Caledonian was not only charming but filled with history too. Jon prepared fabulous breakfasts each morning and then made delicious finger foods during Tea time. We stayed in the Hawthorne room and loved it. If we make it down that way again we will definitely be staying at the Old Caledonian! read more

This is a beautiful historic bed and breakfast in Caledonia, which is a quaint and picturesque village. I had a wonderful and relaxing weekend there. The rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished, and very comfortable. The breakfasts are outstanding! The host and hostess made me feel very welcome and made sure that everything was just right! There are beautiful gardens to wander around in with a koi pond and a lovely gazebo. This would be the perfect spot to have a wedding or vow renewal, or any other similar event, not to mention just a relaxing and peaceful weekend getaway. read more

We were here for four nights. It was fabulous!! Jon and Penny are amazing hosts. The food was outstanding, beyond delicious. Jon is an awesome chef. All of the breakfasts were delicious and bountiful (loved the Bonny Cakes). Make sure to go for the dinner option, better than any first class restaurant. The rooms are unique and spotless.
