Modern Elegance meets Bed & Breakfast. Beautiful home. Breakfast at 9am. We Loved the Madison suite. Great location

Banana-macadamia pancakes w/sausage

We prefer a bed & breakfast to a hotel when it's possible and places like this are why! First, it's a great location. We were doing part of our History Nerd Tour in Virginia (Monticello, Highland, Montpelier). It's a short drive to everything in Charlottesville, including the Michie Tavern, established around 1784. Dave greeted us at the door and made us feel welcome right away. He gave us all the details we needed for the B&B (door codes, hours for breakfast, etc) The room was wonderful. We got the Mazzei room that has a California king bed and a jacuzzi. The room also has beautiful view of the sunrise. Upon entering we noticed a small bottle of sweet wine and two gourmet chocolates. The mini fridge was stocked with water, soda & a bottle of sparkling wine. The bed was one the most comfortable I've ever slept on. The house overall is very welcoming. There are ice, snacks, silverware, napkins, books, menus to area restaurants all in the Barrel Room. We stayed two nights which meant two breakfasts. Both were amazing. The first morning, we started with apple cinnamon cake, then had scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon and fresh fruit. The next morning the starter was a Greek yogurt parfait followed by banana-macadamia pancakes and sausage. All of this great food comes with fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh coffee. I'd go back just for the breakfast. My only issue was the binder with info on local restaurants. We picked one not realizing the menu was a little old and the place was part of a regional chain we weren't familiar with. We asked Dave for a personal recommendation and the place he sent us to was great. We will definitely return!

Wow what a gem. The people here are so nice and our room was so charming. Enjoyed a great nights sleep in our cozy bed! Our morning started with the most aromatic cup of coffee while overlooking the vineyard. Followed by a charming breakfast before we headed out for our day. The chocolates and wine at bed time weren't to bad either. Totally will be back here again. Such a nice place to unplug and unwind.

The bathroom is shared and the walls are thinnish so if the other guests are noisy and/or incontinent you may not have the best experience, but I was fortunate to be staying here during a quiet holiday time. Breakfast is diy and pretty simple (bread for toasting, fruit, oats, butter, jams, honey, eggs) but the ingredients are fresh and good quality. Plenty of tea, coffee and milk and filtered water. The house is plant-filled, sustainable (recycling and composting!), green and clean. It could do with a bit of sprucing up, but for $75 a night, who cares? It's excellent value for money. Raven and Flame are wonderful communicative hosts.

We easily hiked our way around town during our one night's stay here. The owners are like super cool parents that you wish knew when you were a kid. They run an environmentally-friendly home decked out with art by Flame (all available for purchase). They compost, recycle and only use reusable towels. They had cabinets stocked with organic and/or fair trade coffee/hot chocolate. There was locally baked bread which I really made a dent into plus jams and jellies for your convenience. Local eggs were also available so we made a quick scramble with toast in the morning. The ONLY reason I gave this guesthouse 4 stars and not 5 stars is that your experience is mostly based on the other guests here. It was a full house on this particular evening/morning and being that's it is a house and not a hotel, the walls are a bit thin and you can hear everything! The couple in the room next to ours chatted into the wee hours and were up early showering (I woke up at 6:45 am to someone showering in the shared bathroom across the hall - it's a shared bathroom which is only an issue if you need to go wee when someone is showering, like in my case). The other room, occupied by two women, chatted loudly the entire time in the kitchen starting at around 9am, so there was no hope of getting additional sleep. Checkout is 11am so we finally took advantage of our bread and eggs breakfast in the hour before we left. Would definitely come back here in the hopes we had quieter roommates!

Overall, 3/5 for an average experience. This would be a good place to go for an anniversary, to bring a family member you haven't seen in awhile or someone you want to impress. It is a gorgeous property and the interior is beautiful as well. Probably wouldn't be my pick to take any of my foodie friends considering there is better tasting American food in town. There is parking inside and the walk to the building is confusing. There's not really clear signage to indicate where the restaurant is on the premises. Luckily the estate is gorgeous so we didn't mind wandering around a bit before dinner. The host was nice, the servers all seemed young and untrained. The biggest issue we had all night was the lack of good service. Our server was very absent for most of the meal and every single course had a missing utensil. For bread service, she did not check in and we sat and waited until the bread got cold before we could flag her down for appetizer plates. Oh well. For the rest of the dinner we had similar issues. We ordered off of the restaurant week menu and tried nearly every item - all of them were just average. To start, 3 of us had the saffron soup with mussels and toast, one person had the bbq pork belly and one had the prosciutto cantaloupe salad. Personally I thought the salad was excellent - the prosciutto was good and the goat cheese fruit arugula combination was great. I had the mussels soup and toast. The lack of service was an issue here. Our server was nowhere to be found after the food was run out, and so 3 out of 5 of us sat at the table without spoons for the soup waiting for her to show up. By the time she did (after passing the table 3-4 times) the soup was already cold :/ it might've been better warm. It was yogurt and potato with PEI mussels. Pretty good. I liked it it was a 4/5. My friend who had the pork belly said it was average. The second course came out and this was a big hit or miss. The kunz short rib (named after the late chef, Gray Kunz, who was renowned for his short rib with pickled mango and mustard sauce) was a total miss. The rib itself was so dry and almost sharp when it shredded. The texture was just not good. The other person at the table who ordered the dish felt like the meat was way too bland and i felt mine was too salty. It seemed like they were inconsistently prepared. The short rib was a 1-2/5. My spinach was also way too salty. Not what you'd expect for a place like this. The halibut seemed well done. My friend did comment on the amount of "fluff" on the plate (garnishes, dressings, etc) but he prefers simple food always. Overall he's not really interested in fish most of the time and he loved it. So this dish was likely a 5/5. The pork shoulder fell in the middle. I tried some and the celery greens, red onion and apricot combination was great. The meat itself suffered some of the same fate the short rib did - it didn't taste entirely fresh. It almost felt like it had been sitting out for awhile or something. It was significantly more juicy and tender than the short rib was. Overall, I'd give it a 3-4/5 No one ordered the ratatouille, so that was the only thing on the menu we did not try. For dessert, our table ordered all three options - a chocolate soufflé (i think?) covered in blueberries, rum baba with crushed pistachio and a peach galette. The chocolate soufflé (again I don't know what this was) apparently was amazing. The two who ordered it went silent until the bowl was empty. 5/5. One of our friends and I each had the rum baba. This was spectacular. Really well done 5/5. The peach galette was the only slacker, the pastry dough itself was very bland and almost tasted a little doughey like it hadn't cooked enough. The filling left much to be desired 2/5. Overall though, dessert was the highlight. The two that were good were AMAZING. Of course, our server again forgot spoons for the soufflé things and so that was just another reminder that we'd probably not do this again. Overall, for how dinner went in terms of the food and service I'm not sure we would do this again. If the food was better i would consider coming back, but frankly, i think there are better places to eat for this price point with better service. Again, not the worst place I've ate at in town but it's not even in the running for the best.

First off, every interaction from booking to check out was full of kindness and going above and beyond. When the owners found out we were celebrating a birthday, T excitedly said she'd "birthday bomb" the room. That she did! Full of decorations and balloons, it was a beautiful way to celebrate. Then, after chatting with Jim, the chef, he learned that the birthday boy loved lamb and offered to make that special (we signed up for the five course meal). The five courses we had were so worth the cost. Not only were portions huge, but everything we were given was absolutely delicious. I'll dream of that filet mignon for a while. The three course breakfasts were also amazing, made extra special by selecting one of their tons of options of flavored lattes. I couldn't recommend staying here more. In addition, the grounds were gorgeous and well kept. We'll be back next year! Thank you Jim and T for making everything so special.

Several of the amenities were not available, the property was run down and dirty. After we arrived at the Glade cabin we walked down the property to see what it had to offer. We noticed our cabin did not have a washer and dryer in it as described and didn'tfind the communal area laundry to use. There was no map provided and no signage to guide what areas were private and for public use. We came upon the wood burning sauna and I gasped when i opened the door. It was run down, super rustic and it honestly reminded me of a crematorium. Next to that was the cool dip pool which was not in working order and not listed as that on the rental description. Several reviews seem like the pool hasnt been in use for a few years. We then walked up to the "castle" on a narrow foot bridge and at the top were what seemed to be two drunk men who claimed they lived there. They were blocking the walkway, and to get around them was awkward. They asked us how we found this place and why we were there. Something didn't sit right with that encounter, so we continued walking instead of going inside to see the communal area. We went back to our cabin and never used the rest of the property after that. It did not seem eco friendly either. The property seems to be in a constant state of construction that other things get overlooked and unkempt. The glade cabin was just ok. It was secluded which was a plus. It seemed clean however there was a strong musty smell throughout. No cleaning supplies offered. The cabin had an ant problem inside and a bee problem outside of the entry doors. Both doors were hard to lock from inside. The main door leading to the kitchen had quite a large gap between it and the frame causing an easy way for insects to get in. The keypad was also not working properly and had a constant noise coming from it which was annoying while trying to sleep. The furniture was old and not comfortable. It did have good wifi and was able to stream on the TV. The lightning was very dim inside, and although it had a lot of lights it was still dark. Im not sure how this property keeps getting good reviews, but i did find quite a few similar to mine. On TripAdvisor there is also mention of this being a nudist camp which was not mentioned in any of the rental descriptions. That, and the non working pool and sauna alone would have made me not book in the first place. Again misleading and unsettling. It is close to the national park which is why we originally chose this place. We spent as much time away from it as possible and only returned to sleep. We did not once see any employees or property managers. I would caution anyone to rethink booking here.
