We recently stayed at the English Inn while visiting Charlottesville and had a very pleasant experience. The location is excellent--just about 6 minutes from the University of Virginia, making it a convenient home base for exploring the area. The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming from check-in to check-out. The lobby and sitting area are attractive, comfortable, and inviting. Our room was clean and comfortable. While it wasn't luxurious or overly fancy, it had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. One of the highlights was the complimentary breakfast. There was a great variety of options, including two types of scrambled eggs (plain and cheese with peppers), bacon, sausage, buttermilk biscuits, cereal, coffee, tea, and juice. Everything was well stocked and made for a great start to the day. The indoor pool was unfortunately under repair during our visit, but it looked like it will be a really nice amenity once the work is completed. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would definitely choose the English Inn again the next time we're in the Charlottesville area. read more

We stayed at English Inn for a short weekend getaway and were so happy with our stay! It's conveniently located off the highway, but not noisy. Our room and all the common areas were VERY clean - open and well-lit stairs and elevator; the lobby and sitting area near the fireplace; the indoor pool; and the dining area. We loved sitting by the fire playing cards. It was so quiet and peaceful. We loved the cookies and tea at 4pm every day. The (included) breakfast was delicious and has a ton of options (cereal, yogurt, fruit, waffles, pancakes, grits, oatmeal, eggs, home fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy. A huge plus, esp with a little one. So good! Free parking, and again, a very cute and clean hotel with a lot of charm. We'll be back! read more

We just came back from a 1 week stay at The Inn in Charlottesville, VA. I rate motel/hotel stays based on 3 things: 1) the mattress - this is a 5; one of the best I've used in years. It is very firm which is the way I like it. Also nice pillows ranging from moderately soft to very firm (maybe too much so). 2) the shower - 2 1/2 - 3; weak flow, unadjustable, but good water heat control. No shower soap dispenser tho' they had shampoo & conditioner. Also it was a pretty tight space. 3) everything else: nice decor, good expansive free breakfast with the best GRITS I've had in years, maybe ever; Has in room microwave & frig; reasonably central location; adequate housekeeping service. Note: in a separate room, my daughter found a roach in here toilet - no other ones were seen. This can happen in the best of places. Finally, I rate all this together as a 4-, my wife rated as a 3-. Considering everything, I recommend it. read more

Love the exterior aesthetic of this inn, and the main lobby with the fireplace and a bunch of different hot beverage options including cider with dry fruit and blossoms you can add. Quite charming. We love to see it. The lobby features many things that call to mind a medieval inn: European lattice covering great big window, knights armor standing in one corner, a grandfather clock in the other, enormous fireplace setting in a den with wooden chairs and a rich iron chandelier. This is all on the main floor. Upstairs however, lacks any of this charm: the hallways are very bright with harsh light against stark white walls, the room is the same. All of the lamps have 120 watt lightbulbs with no dimmer options. Room is clean, shower is perfect, view of community allotment gardens below our window is lovely. But again, we found it really frustrating that we couldn't get comfort light levels in the room after dark. Based on the exterior, I was hoping for a more romantic aesthetic inside the room but it's your standard basic design. And while I understand these things happen, I'm disappointed to find the pool closed for renovation. I assumed from the listing on Hotels.com and Yelp that the pool was open and planned accordingly. If we return to Charlottesville I would give this place another try when the pool is open, but probably will bring my own tiny 40 watt lamp. read more

FLEAS! This hotel has FLEAS!! We stayed at the English Inn of Charlottesville the night of October 21, 2025. When we awoke the morning of October 22, we had red bites on us and we found fleas in the room (205). There were also dead bugs in the "clean" bath towels. We immediately packed up our belongings and went to the front desk. The staff there said they would adjust my bill, but they weren't authorized to do so. They said they would have the manager contact me later that day. It has now been over a week, I've called multiple times, left a voicemail and message with a clerk, emailed the manager, and no one has contacted me. The person working the front desk needs some serious training, or to always have a second employee with her. I checked in on July 2nd for a day use as I have been driving all night. I work overnights and I informed her as such. I asked if I could extend the stay and she said day use is only for 6 hours and there was no way I could book an overnight stay and check in at 8 am. I understand that these rules exist for a reason but if someone is willing to pay and you obviously have the room available then why not allow it? My dog was barking at every person walking by because he was hungry and tired and after 25 minutes she finally made the key. Then she tried to hold it while she told me all about the hotel. I asked for the key and she acted like I was being rude. Customer service includes respecting the customer and their wishes. I had told her I really just wanted to get in the room so I could feed him and start my very short nap and she tried to delay it even longer. read more

There was a dog in the breakfast restaurant. Very unsanitary. The breakfast items in the warmers were all cold. And at 6:30 in the morning several guests were walking down the hall, and in the elevator, and in the lobby. Blaring music from a radio waking people up and nothing was said about it. read more

We had a mediocre experience here. The front desk staff were friendly and courteous. The room was OK; the entire property feels dated and could probably use an update. Our AC didn't work when we first arrived in our room, an issue that was thankfully quickly addressed by maintenance. The bed was a little stiff and there was only one flimsy blanket on it with no other options for cover. The TV was also old with an SD signal on an HD screen (there's no excuse these days to NOT have HD in every room). A charming property that needs to get back to basics. read more

Interesting to see such mixed reviews. My partner and I loved it here! Great value. Very polite and friendly staff who greeted us. There was fresh and delicious lemonade and water in the front. The lobby is cozy and they have board games. Our room was clean, the bed was comfy and large, the bathroom was good. (Shower was hot and good water pressure.) They have a tiny gym with the basics and an indoor heated pool. It's very convenient and close to downtown. The location is right in back of one of the famous Bodos bagels. The free breakfast was superb! There was a great variety of fruit, eggs, biscuits, French toast, cereals, muffins and bagels. (They even had some sort of warmed spicy apples.) I think this is one of the better values for the area. If I need to return to the area again I would stay here. Highly recommended! read more

I wasn't sure when we pulled up, this is not my norm for a hotel we usually stay at a Hilton. But we thought we'd take a chance and it paid off! This place was great! It's pet friendly and the rooms are nice and clean. The water was nice and hot for the shower in the morning. They have an indoor heated pool. The main lobby was clean and roomy with games to play. Tea time from 4-6 was also a nice unexpected treat. The cookies and cakes were delicious and the tea was very tasty. Then breakfast!! Which is included! Wow, it's from 7-10 and they had such a spread with all the accoutrements you need. Two types of scrambled eggs, potatoes with onions and pepper, bacon, sausage, waffles, french toast, oatmeal. grit, pastries bagels, fruit, cottage cheese and peach slices. A cesspool of an establishment, if you can call it that. It was old, wore down, cheap and a disappointment. I have tried to push this experience out of my mind. We booked here to go to the UVA game and it was the last place with rooms in Charlottesville, VA and. Now I know why. The room was just so old and worn, I tried to get a better one but they said that I was in a updated room! No amenities, not even lotion. The parking is awful, you have to park around the back, which is dark and seedy. It was the pits for sure. Tip: don't do it, stay anywhere else. read more

Cute inn and loved the friendly welcome. They had an amazing southern breakfast and hours for eating were logical. Like I can sleep in a little and didn't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get some food so it was honestly my fave quality. Everything was great, clean, and spacious rooms for my two pets I was traveling with. Stayed one night and the only thing I didn't really like was my shower had a clogging problem and didn't drain well at all!! But it honestly can easily be overlooked. Wanted to like this place. The staff are super nice. But the first room had a ton of ants, they moved us into a room with a non functional AC and it's 85 degrees outside. To be specific, it will kick on for 2 hours then it just blows air without cooling it. If you can reach the front desk and someone is there, they flip the circuit breaker or something to fix it, but you have to do this every 2 hours to stay cool and the staff are clearly busy fixing other ppls problems half the time. The phone's front desk button does nothing, when I call the main number it's busy, you have to actually walk to the desk and tell them every 2 hours, if someone is even there. It's not crowded at all. I question how many usable rooms there actually are. The food sucked too, but that's not what they lose stars for. read more

We had a great stay at the English Inn. it's a bit outdated (no smart tvs) but we didn't care since we barely watch TV. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy! My husband wouldn't stop talking about how good breakfast was. It's a great location and quick to jump on main road to get downtown or other local towns. This place has German cockroaches. I had to stay here for work, found one in my room crawling in the bathtub and asked to switch rooms. Today, I found another one crawling on the dresser in the new room I was placed in. Apparently German cockroaches are very invasive and I am worried about bringing them home with me now. We visited our daughter who lives in C'Ville but decided to stay in hotel/motel. Did a lot of searching online and came upon the English Inn. I'm glad we chose this place. The location is very close to the freeway interchange so easy entrance and exit to get to our daughter's location. We read online from other reviewers that there was construction/upgrading going on but it didn't impact our stay. Our room was very nice and clean. It looks like it was recently redone. The mattress was comfortable. There was a microwave and small fridge in the room. The room is well insulated as we didn't hear other occupants next door or talking in the hallway. They provide a great full breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, bagels, toast, cereal, French toast to name a few items), a definite plus. The staff were all very nice and friendly. If we return to C'Ville, we will definitely stay at the English Inn again. read more

This is a nice hotel that is just out of the way from the Mall in downtown Charlottesville. I like the decor. It looks like, to one who hasn't traveled, what an English inn would look like. The staff are friendly and helpful. The room I had, a king room, came with a free breakfast. This trip was a one day getaway just to decompress. I selected the area and hotel because it wasn't too far away and there's plenty to do to decompress for a day. I didn't want to be in the middle of all the places downtown; but I also didn't want to be too far away from all the places downtown. The room was a good sized room. The shower was nice and big. The bed was comfortable. We only had one issue during our 1 night stay. The air conditioner in the room was not working well. I reported it to the front desk not too long after checking in. The front desk sent someone to the outdoor unit to reset it. I thought that would work since the person at the front desk seemed confident in there response to me about the issue. It didn't. My girlfriend and I took an Uber to downtown for dinner. My hope was the room would cool off while we were gone. It didn't really cool down that much, but it had cooled some. The next morning, I got up and went to breakfast. There was at least a 10-degree temperature difference between my room and the hallway. We had set the AC on 68 before going to bed. It was not 68 in the room when we woke up. It was definitely warmer. The breakfast was good. There were a variety of foods to eat including scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, sausage gravy, waffles, grits, and more. The breakfast selection was enough to satisfy. The staff were friendly and helpful. It is partly my fault that I wasn't more proactive about getting the AC problem resolved. I figured I was only staying the one night, so I wasn't going to make a big fuss about it. When I checked out in the morning, I reported it to the front desk again. The maintenance person overheard me and told me he was going to look at it immediately. So, that's a plus for those who come after me. Overall, I would stay here again. Anywhere can have a maintenance issue, so I don't hold that against the English Inn. I liked the decor, the room was great except for the AC, and the breakfast was satisfying. A quirky hole in the wall hotel. We were driving through on a road trip and needed a room for the night. It had a medieval feel to it, a lot of old wood and a wood fire in the lobby. It's not a flashy property, but it was clean and the staff were great. Beds and room were fine. The water pressure was average, but temp was great, as I could turn it up for a steaming hot shower. Temp of the room was good and adjustable. They offered a free breakfast too, which was better than expected. Typical spread of breads/bagels, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, cereals, etc. Very attentive staff, as everything was super clean, full, and tasty. A lot of the people at breakfast seemed like regulars, maybe in town for a college game? James is the food & beverage guy, and he & his staff did a great job. They also had hot cider out in the lobby, which honestly was awesome bc it was a cold morning. We took cups to go too. If I'm ever in town again, I'll likely stay here again, as I prefer to support local businesses and this was a great stay. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!! My friend and I booked a 3 day girls weekend. We found bed bugs on both queen beds. (See pictures) When we took the pictures and a bed bug we had killed to the front desk, they could have cared less. The hotel refunded my $384 for three nights and then recharged me $236 for the first night. We were actually only in the hotel a half an hour. We left because of the bugs and found another hotel. It took my credit card dispute to get my money back. The manger refused my calls and ignored my emails. This place is nasty. I would have given them zero stars if I could. Candice front desk manager: Called my room @ 12a.m to tell me that I have bass coming outta my room when I have a small Jbl speaker playing lite music to fall asleep. Apparently you can't even watch tv in these rooms. She called the police after I told her that the bass isn't coming from my room but the previous night she was staying above me in the hotel : why I have no clue but she complained then as well I'm tried of being harassed @ this point Why must I have to leave my place bc she's racial. & over reacted to this. The PHONE in the room rings louder then my music actually playing! Don't stay here if you like watching tv in your own room or like playing music to go to sleep! Virginia has some bullshit law that they can kick me out of a room for actually sleeping apparently definitely won't be back here UNLESS THIS MANAGER GET FIRED FOR HAVING ME KICKED OUT FOR NO REASON!! read more

It's been three excellent nights at this quaint, inexpensive, classy little place and I couldn't be happier! Anyone who complains about this super cool, professional, easily accessible place needs to just pony up the extra few hundred bucks and go stay in some fancy pants place with pillow mints and maybe some servants to fan them and serve grapes. Seriously, I love every single thing about my stay here. The WiFi does what I need it to (faster than my phone's Internet, so good enough!), the facilities are clean and stylish, and it just has so much CHARM. If I come back to Charlottesville, there is simply no chance at all of me staying anywhere else. Period. I am that taken by the experience. The staff have all been friendly and easy to find, the cheesy eggs and the bacon at their breakfast bar made my day, and the rooms are better than some I've stayed at for nearly twice the price. I just don't get what there is to gripe about, but I guess some people will find a way to hate on anything! Trust me here--this place is legit. read more

The English Inn has been my favorite place to stay in Charlottesville, Virginia, since I graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980. The comfortable rooms, kind and helpful staff, classy ground floor sitting area (with knights' armor, a fireplace, coffee and tea 24/7, and super comfortable chairs), is always complemented by the amazing, full, delicious English breakfast, and freshly baked cookies every afternoon. My most recent, extended stay was made better than ever by the kindness of an evening front desk professional named "Savannah." She immediately responded to every request and concern during our 7-day stay. She coordinated with maintenance for the minor issues we noted and with housekeeping, and she always followed up with us to make sure we were happy. She is a wealth of information about the hotel, Charlottesville, the University, and local areas and events. She also made certain that the delicious, freshly backed chocolate chip or M&M cookies were available during the entire afternoon period (and longer sometimes), even though some hungry guests (like us) would take four (or more) at a time! Many, many thanks to Savannah for making our stay (and certainly the stays of many, many other visitors) so wonderful! read more

A disappointing experience. A sign behind the registration desk informs guests that there is no housekeeping service "for their protection," presumably from COVID. You make your own bed, manage your own towels, empty your own wastebasket--and we've got only one. I am certain they would have provided a vacuum cleaner had we asked. It's the only hotel we've stayed in, both here and abroad, where maid service was not provided. They will provide you with whatever you need as long as you fetch it from the front desk, which is often unstaffed. One morning, I called the front desk repeatedly, but no one answered. Amenities look like they came from a grab bag of different brands and types. The air conditioner works but makes a creative array of loud noises to entertain you at night. The shower is excellent -- lots of hot water -- but the exhaust fan may have been exhausted. It confused sound with suction and put all its efforts into the former. We wanted to try the large indoor pool but was afraid it would be self-chlorinated and we didn't bring any chlorine. Breakfast is good, though don't eat the bacon, which swims in the grease in which it was cooked. The waiter said, "People have complained." He said he got yelled at by the kitchen staff when he got replacement bacon. But they had biscuits. I love biscuits. We stayed here because it was convenient to our destination. But no amount of convenience makes up for being treated like you're home -- with all the housework that entails. read more

Ive stayed here 3 times. For UVA appointments. Always some issue with every stay. First time, we all got a bad cough. 2nd time the tub had no stopper and couldn't give our child a bath before her appointment, and this time the shower was broke. Couldn't shower. Reported it to maintenance and they came in and rigged it to where it barely worked. Still only got to take a half ass shower. It was ziptied!!!!lol. The outlets were ancient and plugs wouldn't fit snug. Theyd fall right out so couldn't charge our phones. I asked for a new room but I was refused. The rooms are not worth what you pay. Over $100 a night for a motel quality stay. If Ima spend $100-$175 for a room, Im going to the Hilton. I will not stay here again. read more

Just few days ago, my family and I stayed at the English Inn to attend the UVA graduation. The room seemed cleaned at first, but on our second day, we saw a huge cockroach going under the couch. We were worried about the cockroaches making their way into our stuff, and more importantly it was disgusting. We asked to change our rooms. The general manager, Joshua Gross, was not too happy to hear this and yelled at us asking for proof (his exact words, "do you have proof?!") I doubt anyone has the ability pull out their phone and take pictures of moving cockroaches in a milli-second. And even if I did, why would I even think the need to prove myself? Joshua was extremely unprofessional as he failed to control his anger and yelled at the guests in an intimidating manner. Joshua said he couldn't change the room because there were no suite rooms available. I didn't need the same suite, just another room without cockroaches. Indeed, there were plenty of other rooms available (I checked online). He just wanted to spray below the sofa. We expressed our concerns with the odor of cockroach killers, but he assured us there wouldn't be any. There was a strong smell. I would not recommend the English Inn. This old place will have these cockroaches forever and the staff here does not have the ability to resolve any issues arising from their poorly maintained rooms. read more

Stayed here for a wedding in Charlottesville. The hotel looks old from outside. There is free parking. It was quiet, but I had a room away from the elevators, which always helps. The room was fine - nothing extraordinary. The free breakfast was acceptable. There is a Bodo Bagels right outside the hotel. I was told that the bagels there are one of the best in the area. I would have given it 4 stars, but taking down one for 3 reasons: 1) There were 6 pillows in the room. All of them were lumpy. I had neck pain every morning due to neck being twisted during the night. They need to replace the pillows frequently. And it would be good to provide different height pillows. 2) I was put on hold for a long term when I called few times while making the reservation. Maybe it was because I called during the morning hours, when guests would be checking out. But all hotels are busy at that time. They need to increase the staff to attend phone calls during the busy hours. 3) The hotel wi-fi was very poor. Uploading and downloading messages was impossible. Wi-fi just did not work. read more

I love the English Inn- have stayed there multiple times but was highly disappointed this past weekend. I stayed in one of their suites with my adult daughter and left my Kindle on the bed. They have a terrific breakfast which is one of the best around. By the time I got home and realized I had forgotten my Kindle I called and the room was occupied but housekeeping did not turn in my Kindle. I called multiple times after that but no Kindle. They took my name and phone number. I was very disappointed they did not offer to look deeper into the lost item. read more
