Louisville is full of old houses, some of them too far gone to restore, which makes it a great city for a store like this one, and makes a store like this essential to anyone interested in restoring or decorating an old house. If you can imagine it in an old house, it's here. The specialization is really the stuff that would likely be built in -- floorboards, doors, shutters, molding, fireplaces, pedestals. But there's also plenty of antique furniture, lighting, chandeliers, stained glass, knobs, handles, pedestals, stonework, gates. Not everything is used -- they do have some new items that fit the theme. Look through all the pictures to get a feel. It is packed with knobs, hinges, doors, shutters, wall hooks, dining sets, outdoor lounge sets, outdoor sculptures, old signs, birdbaths, concrete art, fountains, urns, vases, benches, metal stars, chandeliers, floor lamps, table legs, bannisters, tiles, hanging lights, sconces, arm chairs, tables, mirrors, baseboards and metal gates. And those are just some of the things I remember. Architectural Salvage provides home pieces -- both to attach to a home, like shutters, and to put in a home, like antiques -- to builders, decorators or just anyone who wants to make their home their own. It's size is deceptive when you first come upon this spot on Broadway. You walk into a small room with lots of odds and ends, like door knobs and hinges, but the store's goods are spread over two adjoining buildings and several outside yards. According to its website it has 24,000 square feet. And I've found their prices to be a bit less than other places in town that focus more on antiques. I almost bought this wrought iron sculpture one time for $45, and I did buy a wrought iron dress form for $65. Architectural Salvage is a little overwhelming at first, but you'll soon find yourself wandering from room to room with ease, your eyes floating from one great find to another, looking forward to what you're going to find next. The aesthetic is a bit like Restoration Hardware meets Town and Country. I'm a contractor and this is the place to go for replacement parts for older homes. I forgot the ladies name that runs it but was super helpful and loved to talk about the history of the pieces and I walked away with some barn door rollers I've never seen before. If you are looking for old and random treasures for your home or yard...this is your place. The amount of things available for purchase here is AMAZING! It will take you over an hour just to browse through the huge space if not more. The man that runs this business is very nice and fair. He is willing to take counter offers for items and sometimes even offers to sell it for less than the sticker price when you bring it to him. The prices are WAY better than Joe Lei and he allows you to return an item if you get home and realize you bought the wrong size/shape/color/etc, just hold on to your receipt. Also - it's bigger than it looks. You walk in and think it's quite small, but then you go upstairs, and further in, and finally see that there's much more than the first two rooms. What a fun place to spend an hour or two. Years ago I was in Louisville and saw Architectural Salvage as I drove by. I slammed on the brakes and went in to look around. While there I saw plenty of summer covers for old house fireplaces. I needed one then for my 1908 house, but had no measurements so vowed to come back soon. Ten or more years later, Dream Girl and I planned a trip to Louisville. We had many things to do and see and one of them was a trip to AS. The owner, who sits at the front door, was extremely helpful and I soon found a cover that I thought would fill the bill. He told me that if it didn't work, I could return it, a policy that I appreciate as old houses are often hard to fit. DG found several glass door knobs that she needed for her 1920s bungalow. After setting our finds aside, we prowled the many rooms full of everything you can imagine. There was plenty of stained glass, furniture, and house parts galore. A large outside area was full of old garden furniture, pots, and you name it. We stayed till our legs grew tired and our stomachs empty. Prices are fair and more reasonable with a better selection than a similar place here in Nashville. You know what you need for your old house and now you know where to go. NB. Though the cover didn't fit exactly, I knew a guy who could do a little metalwork and now it's perfect. It's only taken me 48 years to make that fireplace look the way I always wanted it to! read more

Fun place to get lost in. It's a huge place filled with all things yesteryear as well as newer, unique knobs and outdoor statues and more. They have at least five huge Victorian buildings plus their outside areas. So many of our unique garden wares have come from here it's hard d to count. read more

Great, great resource for antique and vintage items for your home. Mantels, doors, ironwork, furniture, lighting - the list goes on and on. Spread out over 4 buildings and a giant lot, you could easily spend a whole day looking and still not see everything. Prices are quite reasonable and there are quite a few staff members about willing to help and answer questions. Makes me really want to start rehabbing a house after being in there! read more

We found this place when we were rehabbing a Queen Anne Victorian in Southern Indiana several years ago. This place is seriously one of the neatest places I have ever been. While I now live 8 hours from Louisville I sometimes think about getting in the car and driving there because I miss it! We found most everything we needed here and believe me we needed a lot of stuff! We got doors, sinks, switch plates, and even a 4 foot claw foot tub. Everytime we went here we had really good service. Once we were in our car when we found a larger piece that we just had to have. The guy let us pay for the item and then held it for us. We weren't able to get back to pick it up for a few weeks but it was not a problem. If you like old stuff this is a must. Be sure to wear a sensible shoe though! read more

We took a quick overnight trip to Louisville. Aside from the concert we attended, this stop was by far our favorite. There is something for everyone -- wood, outdoor art, furniture, light fixtures, etc. We came home with a few knobs, several old doorknobs, a (new) rain chain, and a really cool old light used by railroad companies. Tip -- like our rain chain, the store does have some new items. Some things looked old, but after looking at the tag, it was obvious it was also brand new. It didn't kill the vibe for us, but just watch for that. read more

Very cool treasures around every turn. And there are a lot of turns. Seriously. Pack breadcrumbs. They had a nice mix of affordable and "wouldn't it be cool some day" pieces. Furniture, fixtures, and various and sundry knobs and twiddly bits for whatever "it just needs a little something" corner of your home. If you are a fellow allergy sufferer, I can report that there is a shop cat, but it didn't bother me. And though I can't leave Joe Ley without a mold/dust/very old things headache, I had no such issues here. read more

This is the coolest place I have ever laid eyes on. They have everything you could ever dream of in your most elaborate DIY fantasies. It is quite possibly the most fairly price antique store I have ever stepped foot in. It is a treasure hunter's delight and you can easily lose track of time as you wander through the 24,000 square feet of space!! Everyone who works there is exceptionally friendly and helpful also. If you get to talk to the owner, Jordan, you will have a special treat as he is like to tell you about his adventures traveling the world finding the unique gems displayed in his shop for sale. He seems to know everything about every piece including the type of material it is made from with just a glance, the period from which it came, if its an original or reproduction, etc... All I can say is wow, this is a completely amazing place. We have a house that is over 100 years old and this shop had everything and more. The fireplace mantel collection impressed me and when we are ready to renovate this is the place where I am coming. Most things are pricey but I don't think it's unreasonable, it's because there are amazing architectural finds and the price comes with that. I'm giving 4 stars vs 5 for a couple reasons. But 1st, the good stuff. Also, I'll update this review after I've spent more time & utilized them to assist me in finding a glass mogul base torchiere shade hopefully to match or close enough to the lamp's twin. The people who work here are very friendly and very helpful. Several employees and the owner passing by & greeting us at the door let us know about the sale they were having. I have never, ever been to an architectural antiques & vintage salvage & hardware shop this comprehensive or even seen one before, not even in Adamstown, PA, the antiques Capitol of the usa. Not in philly, jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pittsburgh or NOLA. This place has OODLES of stuff! Now, I didn't get to see all the buildings or the yard bc we went this past late feb or March when we had that awesome, bigass 10" snow & it was sleeting pretty bad so we had to get home. But they have all the hardware & parts I could imagine anyone needing. There are a ton of lamps and chandeliers from different eras (victorian thru midcentury modern & 1960s). Sinks for bathroom or kitchen, some architectural furniture pieces. The hardware and parts seems priced average to good esp considering the sale. The lamps, chandeliers & architectural furniture pieces were pricey to me. But I am not an antiquarian, so... And I will definitely be returning soon to find & order that lampshade and look for a couple of hardware items I need, once of which is pretty hard to find. I am also excited about seeing the rest of their inventory. I'll likely be using them when I take my too-updated, ultra-modern bathrooms (ew) in my victorian home back down to a more period-appropriate look. I can't wait to see what's out back of this place!! The only drawbacks were that some things seemed overpriced, it was pretty dirty in there & apparently there haas been a very naughty cat(s?) who don't like to use the litter box. And that they are closed on Sundays which to me is prime antique-shopping time bc most people aren't at work. Right??? Regardless, this store is a true gem, I can't imagine there are many other stores like this in the country, and what better location than here in Louisville with all of our grand, old homes? If you need stuff for your old home, if you like antique & vintage hardware & architectural pieces then *do* try this place! You will not be disappointed. Wow! Wow! Wow! Architectural is a dream. I didn't even know I would enjoy looking at millions of doors, hinges, knobs, sinks, baseboards, lights, tiles, posts, fountains, outdoor furniture, and any other thing you could imagine that is architectural and salvaged from old homes! I am more into old furniture and knickknacks, but this is such a fun place to visit. Did I say this place is HUGE? This place is HUGE! If you are restoring your home, you can easily spend the day here. You also might spend all your money and then some but hey! The workers were very nice, but the local cats were even friendlier. We had a friend follow us around for a bit and another was too cool, chilling outside, to pay us much attention but let us pet him/her. Now I understand how people are able to live in our cities historical homes and keep their integrity! It doesn't matter what you are looking for, this place has it! Flexible on prices, super knowledgable on what they have in stock and very helpful on finding you what you need. The other nice part is that if you are trying to draw inspiration they are more than willing to allow you to walk the facility and look at your own pace... Unlike most other antique places they don't make you hold their hand while they give you a your.
