He listened to my concerns without making me feel pressured and even wore shoe covers to keep my floors clean, which I really appreciated. My AC system is about 20 years old and had started blowing warm air. I honestly thought I was going to need a whole new system, but I explained that replacing it just wasn't in my budget right now. The technician understood, carefully diagnosed the problem, and found that it was simply a faulty capacitor. After replacing the part, my AC was up and running perfectly again! TIMELY- Uriel called 30 min before his arrival and then, arrived at the stated time. This is particularly helpful so I can move my bunny to another room with all of his belongings. ATTENTION TO DETAIL - I saw him place a protective cloth down on the floor before he placed the ladder and tools down. I also noticed there was a bottle of cleaner with his supplies. He cleaned the inside vents as well as the compressor on the roof. He also tied off a loose wire/when checking the air handler in the ceiling. KNOWLEDGEABLE and THROROUGH - Uriel did a complete system check and then, he sat down with me to explain what was done and why. He addressed the concerns I had about some of the prior readings in terms that I could understand and shared tips that will help ensure my system runs at its most efficient. Example: A higher MERV doesn't always mean "better" and can actually restrict the airflow. He said that for my particular system I should use a MERV10 filter and change it every 3 months. He changed my filters and then, left me with two spares to use before the fall check comes. FRIENDLY - In the course of chatting with Uriel, it came up that I might benefit from having more filtered air coming into my condo. He made a recommendation for a part that would replace the standalone room air purifier I currently use. He placed this info into the after-visit summary so I can "research it and see if it fits with my needs and finances." There was zero pressure to make a purchase on the spot. And while this next item has nothing to do with the knowledge or ability of an HVAC tech, I greatly appreciate that he did NOT smell like cigarette / e-cigarette smoke or strong cologne as I have a bunny and people in my family have asthma. But it's really rare (in my experience) when a service company not only exceeds every expectation but continues to year after year. Krystal is incredible and her attention to follow up and personal communication is the best I've experienced. My system is not new but we did have a new Ecobee thermostat installed a few years back. Huge fan of this company and I'd recommend to anyone! They installed it easily and works (worked haha) perfectly until we had an accident in the attic (by no fault of theirs) that damaged the wire leading to the thermostat. Billy shot right over and diagnosed the issue due to his electrical smarts (and that he can fit up in my attic the size of a mouse trap). Sorry Billy. With old houses and older units, like ours, sometimes rewiring can be really difficult and many times not the best solution. Which was the case in our situation. Instead, the best fix for the wiring issue, was no wiring at all. Thank you technology! Billy suggested installing a wireless remote transmitter on the furnace that could talk to my favorite Ecobee thermostat. Simple solution to an old house problem. The system is up working properly now and it was all done quickly and with no stress. How many times can you say that with a non functioning system in an old house! From the techs and their attention to detail and Krystal and her epic work and customer support, they have my business for life. It's a Good thing we let Guthrie and Sons look at our system. Vlad was our technician and he was awesome explaining what the problem was and what needed to be done. He also was able to locate the part that the other company said they couldn't find really easy. Vlad was also respectful putting on shoe covers before entering the house. Short Version:…read more Called for leak search, service was not thorough. Guthrie and Sons' technician told me he found a small leak in the coil unit, then told me the coil unit needed to be replaced, and recommended to replace the whole AC unit since my system is old. Turns out there was a major leak in the refrigerant line in the attic, and a small leak in the TXV valve, which were not identified in the original leak search. Another company replaced the TXV valve and the broken refrigerant line for half the price compared to the coil unit replacement suggested by Guthrie and Sons. Detailed Version: My AC stopped pumping cold air when I first turned on the AC unit this year. Turns out the refrigerant was all leaked out. Called Guthrie and Sons for a leak search (cost $527). Technician came out, pumped the lines to 300PSI and said he found a small leak at the coil unit. He told me the coil unit needs to be replaced, and recommended a full AC system upgrade since my system is very old. Luckily, I asked for another quote from West Coast. West Coast technician was unable to locate the leak in the coil unit and noticed the pressure was dropping very quickly and suspected there was a big leak elsewhere. Then the technician took the coil unit back to his shop for diagnostic and found there was a leak in the TXV valve. West Coast technician returned with the coil unit and located the big leak in attic and the technician took care of it and our system is working again. Since Guthrie and Sons technician did not found the real problem of the leak and charged me $500+ for the leak search, I called them and requested a compensation. However, they refused. I believe in second chance, but it is unfortunate that Guthrie and Sons did not try to make things right and admit the failure of their leak detection. Not to mention they tried to sell me a whole unit replacement which would cost a lot more while leaving the real problem unfixed. My recommendation is to avoid Guthrie and Sons, as they are not willing to take up their own mistakes, and try to up sell customers unnecessary products. Since West Coast did a great job, I would recommend West Coast instead.
