Called the place which went to their Vernon location. I was informed I called that location but was informed the time the Van Nuys location would close by 2 pm (not 24 hr service as indicated on Yelp) and he even provided the cross streets. Awesome!! I thanked the guy who answered and provided the info!! Upon arrival at the Van Nuys location the guys there indicated they were closed and started laughing .. really I had more than half hour to shop and get the ice I needed before the place closed for the day!!?? Mismanaged or poor quality workers on staff its disappointing all around especially when I was informed otherwise and made the drive. read more

I was a customer for Mid Central Ice and they were great. Always came when needed a delivery. Since Artic Glacier bought out Mid Central ice I call and place an order and the person answering the phone is very difficult to understand and it is never the same person. I have been calling every week for 3 months and still have not gotten a delivery. They made a trouble ticket and gave me the number and that hasn't gotten me anywhere wither. read more

Customer Service is Atrocious from the Corporate level. New Automated phone system does not work well and they have removed land line phones from local plants. I was out of Ice and called the 1-800 number routed to MN when I was told I would receive a delivery the next day. Next day came and went with no delivery called again with being told the same thing and same results of no delivery. After 1 week of several calls and no delivery I finally drove 40 miles round trip to the plant and was able to speak to someone who informed me that the local plant was not receiving the order information from corporate. Clearly the the right hand is not talking to the left hand in this disorganized company! I believe the local employees are working hard, but the corporate structure and communication is a mess! I was familiar with Union Ice as they have a solid history in the LA area. I stopped their quite a few times to get large amounts of cubed ice for events and was amazed at the amount of ice you get for extremely reasonable prices. My refrigerator/freezer went out a while ago and as luck would have it the repair guy was close. The part he needed to replace would take a couple days to get here. So I called Union Ice about some dry ice for the interim. He asked what size I needed and how much etc, but I was clueless so I just went there showed him what would work. He proceeded to get me what was needed and then some. I mentioned the budget had a limit. He said hold on and disappeared into the ice house and came back with pieces they couldn't sell for whatever reason and proceeded to load us up. So impressed by this company. They delivered 8 tons of ice to my house and were in and out in 45 minutes. They created a snow slide in my driveway. It was magical and beyond impressive. Trying to make an ice luge... Internet search revealed several places near downtown LA and Carson. Union Ice (Van Nuys) was the closest to the Westside. It's in the industrial part of Van Nuys. As you enter their loading dock/parking lot (I went on a Saturday morning), it'll seem like the place is abandoned. Once you walk up the steps to the loading dock, there's usually someone in the office at the top of the steps. Their ice block denominations are in 25 lb blocks. They seem to store them in 6-packs...six 25 lb blocks fused together. Depending on how much you want, the dude will whip out his ice pick, punch a few holes, and within a few seconds, your ice block is ready to go! Paid ~$4 per 25 lb block...i think. Cash. Don't expect this guy to help you move the block of ice, either. As soon as cash was exchange, he disappeared into his office. I kinda like that, though...all business. FYI...for ice luges, I recommend getting 50 lbs, but have him split it transversely...then you'll have 2 luges. read more

This is a great place to go if you need good quality block ice. Block ice isn't everywhere and it is simetimes already broken when you get it bagged. They have a ton of it and will bring out as many blocks as you need. Just remember to bring your own container/cooler to transport it in. Last time I went there, I got a block of ice and a large bag of crushed ice for a camping trip. It kept the food in our cooler cold for 4 days. When we got home, we still had chunks of block ice. It's usually easy to get your ice pretty fast at Union, but the last time I was there it took FOREVER because a film crew was preparing to shoot something there. (I know - classic LA gripe.) read more
