We enjoyed breakfast this morning on the bar side and YUMMY!! Everything was delicious with a nice crisp. I enjoyed the Small Classic from the small portion section of the menu and this was still a ton of food lol But it was so good! I got my hasbrowns loaded with onions, peppers and cheese sauce and it did not disappoint! The sourdough toast was also scrumptious. Service was excellent. The waiter was attentive and thoughtful. We had the Chicken. I had French fries with mine and my wife had sweet potato fries and they were hot which is hard to find. Always a friendly place. I almost forgot, the chicken was good but not as good the menu suggests it is. I've been there more than a few times and I'm always satisfied with my meal. I never knew this gem of a place existed! Been there a couple times more this spring/summer and have not been disappointed. Greetings right when we get there are welcoming and friendly. Atmosphere is good. Nice updates on bar side. Been there for breakfast and dinner, both have been delicious and prompt. 3 1/2 stars. The has browns are definitely on point here. Hopefully you'll get the good cook the day you go. Ask for the has browns extra crunchy and he'll make them so and they'll be made with a generous amount of butter that you taste throughout. It's really good food. So they have this thing on the menu that you can add to and potato serving that involves green pepper, cheese and onions. I forget what they call it on the menu. DON'T get this for the has browns. It ruins the taste and makes them less than crunchy. The bread that they make themselves is really solid. Anything with their bread, even their simply toast is good. My cousin ordered a hamburger, and requested Swiss cheese on it instead of cheddar. They brought it with cheddar anyways, and she asked them if they could change it. The server then brought out a new hamburger, with slices of cold Swiss cheese on top, not even melted. Yikes! My aunt and I ordered walleye, which was super mushy, served with melted butter and no lemon wedges. Neither of us could finish it, they were so bad. Went for breakfast/brunch - Clarification: first time there, went on a (late) Monday morning. All the other guests appeared to be 55 or older, but there was plenty of staff. Did not leave particularly impressed by anything we ate. My biscuits and gravy was very mixed; while the gravy/sausage wasn't too bad, the biscuits tasted extremely bland and were too tough. Corned beef hash was clearly from a can, not homemade, toast was over-buttered (soaked) and eggs were inconsistently cooked. Coffee was below average for your run-of-the-mill diner. Tasted burnt/too dark, a strange nutty flavor to it. Service was mixed: waiter was a nice guy, but we had to wait a moment at the door (rather awkwardly) because the waitress was on the phone. I don't want to write this place off immediately; will return for a lunch/dinner (have heard their bar food is solid), but I can't recommend this place for breakfast. read more

I question health safety. A large group of people finished up at their table. There were a couple of water pitchers left as well as water glasses. Instead of clearing everything off table for next guests, the waitress left the old water pitchers and looked in each remaining water glass to see if they were used and only removed the glasses that appeared to be used. This is unacceptable and laziness. Also I opened my menu and it was disgustingly sticky/greasy/dirty. I think the place has gone downhill. read more

Had a good experience at Flipside. My sisters shared the French toast and enjoyed it. I had the crab egg bene, I would not suggest it. The crab meat was strange and not tasty. Go with the burgers here, they are always the best option. My personal favorite is the patty melt. cheese curds are also 4 stars, the batter they use on them is light, and they are very crispy. We also tried the boom boom shrimp, which i would pass on next time, way too much sauce, my opinion they need to be lightly coated. Service is fast and servers are attentive. read more

My family has been coming here my entire life, I even remember the old location! The boyfriend wanted real fried chicken last week and I suggested he check there and sure enough they have fried chicken specials. It seems they've redone the place since I was last in there, which is nice. I still eat on the restaurant side. I haven't been to the pub/bar. Service was good ad fairly quick. The menu appears smaller... it looks like they no longer do anytime breakfasts. He had chicken and I had the fish. The food was good. The fries weren't anything to write home about - I hate it when good home restaurants have crappy fries. We decided to end the night with dessert. It was ok, but I might have felt better about it if I could have fooled myself into believing it was made in-house instead of wherever it was the container in the pie case said it was from. I mean, come on, we all know most places don't make their pie but I like it when the establishments I visit at least take the pie out of the plastic shell packaging before sticking it in the pie case. read more

Stopped at Ardies on a Friday at noon. Restaurant temperature was approximately 85°. If that would've been the only issue, I wouldn't bother giving it a rating. But unfortunately, I was also able to experience one of the worst waitresses I have ever experienced, coupled with a really bad fish special. We were initially seated and handed breakfast menus, though it was noon. I asked our waitress Tanya for lunch menus, and she unsmilingly handed them over. When my friend asked details about the fish special, she snapped back, "It's fish!" and tapped to point it out on the menu. When I told her I would like the fish special, she reminded me that "one dollar off doesn't apply on the grilled fish" and I told her that was great because I want the batter fried fish. She reiterated that the discount was not available on grilled fish. I again told her that I wanted batter fried fish, 2 pieces. I asked her to bring extra lemons with my fish. She repeated back to me that I wanted extra lemons, which I confirmed. She then said, "Well, then, do you want tartar sauce?" and I said no, I only use lemons. My friend asked if the roast beef was made at the restaurant, and she literally grimaced as though she didn't know what that meant, My friend asked if the roast beef was from a can, and Tanya scrunched up her nose and said no, that it was made at the restaurant. After taking our orders, she brought me a small dish of approximately a 15th of a lemon cut up in the slices. I knew I'd have to ask for more lemons, and I was already bracing myself. When she brought our our meals, I told her that I would probably need more lemon because that's all I use, and I use a lot of lemon. A few minutes later she brought me about an eighth of a lemon cut up into slices. The total amount was equal to about a third of one lemon. My fish looked like it had come from the freezer section of Woodmans. My friend's roast beef was good, but the gravy tasted canned. After trying to choke down two pieces of what seemed like the Gordon's fisherman fish fry, we were ready to leave. We had tried to figure out if Tanya was just having a bad day, and really tried to overlook the cranky service and bad food. When Tanya stopped at our table and we said that we were ready for the bill, she looked at my leftover lemon slices and literally scolded me. She said "you didn't use the pound of lemons I brought - the owner does not like it when the waitresses give out more than one slice of lemon per order! I had to sneak those out of the kitchen without being seen. You know we can't reuse them so you might as well take them home". What I should have told her is I would have used all the lemons if the fish had been edible. I ended up squeezing the miniature lemon slices into my water so that Tanya didn't get into trouble for giving me too many lemons. For crying out loud, I would love to give Ardie's a great review. Last time I ate there was a few years ago and it was pretty good. But this waitress's crappy attitude, coupled with the bad meal, earned a one star rating. Like to go there for their reuben omlette..husband likes thier eggs benedict. They also have some really good beef roast and gravy on texas toast with gravy. Last Sunday was not the best..sat in the worst chairs in the world..should have been thrown out...we moved...food was still good, but coffee for 2 dollars a person was the worst I have ever had. I am a huge fan of breakfast - a secret pleasure of mine is breakfast for dinner - and I went to Ardie's hoping for something decent in the morning the last time I was in La Crosse. If you love hashbrowns, go here for breakfast. Seriously. I like mine extra crispy, and usually request them that way at places and don't get it. But at Ardie's there is a grill cook in the morning who specifically loves extra crispy hashbrowns and has perfected making them, or so our waitress claimed. She was right. These were superbly crispy, buttery, a hint of tenderness inside. Excellent. And for a side, instead of plain old toast you can get grilled toast. Trust me, you want the grilled toast (for a little extra $). It's thick slices of their own bread, buttered up and grilled. Again, it's great. The server was one of the best we've had in a long time. Sometimes the servers at the cheap family places really know what they are doing. My guy finished his small glass of water, and she instantly showed up with 2 huge glasses of water instead. We were about halfway through our pot of coffee, and she swings by with a fresh pot to leave at our table. Every time I looked up to find her, she appeared instantly. And this was Saturday morning and the place was pretty full - we weren't her only table, trust me. Dinners aren't as strong. It's pretty standard family restaurant fare, and very affordable. But for breakfast, if you're looking something with hashbrowns and toast, go here. read more

I have come here before and the food was good. Today we had a group of 9, and the service was not good. I don't know if she was busy someplace else or what. Took a while to get our drinks and for her to take our order. Also took over 5 min to get another kids coloring mat. When the food came I didn't get the coleslaw. Another person asked for more ranch for their meal because it didn't have much on it. Never got the coleslaw and had to ask again for the ranch. One of the party had prime rib which was over done. All in all it may be a good place but today was not one of them. Fun times, Super Service, and GREAT Food!! Cool pub with hot popcorn with real butter to top it off. Great drink specials and food prices are great for the portion sizes. I ordered a 14 oz ribeye that was cooked to perfection with a baked potato and side of coleslaw, which was in a bowl with enough for two. My wife ordered a hot roast beef sandwich that came out on texas toast and a huge serving of mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. You need to go into the place with a heavy appetite. I had horrible service! It took over a half hour to get a waitress and we ended up going to the bar to order our own drinks. It was horrid. Another time we went there, they ran my friend's card twice and the manager didn't do a thing about it. Never have I seen such poor management and service.
