But Eric suggested a Rose. It was a German Rose. Which was another surprise. Usually I'm PRETTY snobby about "why isn't it from OREGON?!? We make all the best wines!!" But Brian, my sweet friend, said oh this is delicious. And was carrying on so I said OMG I'll try it too. Well wow. It ass so delicious. Flavorful but so light. Effervescent just on the front of your pallet. It was delicious. So much so we finished a bottle. And a bit more than that lol But it's DELICIOUS wine. What a great setup. Intimate, cozy, great spot, great music. And like I said, Eric was a great host. We even got to meet his lovely partner and their son. Who was an absolute doll and pleasure to hang with. The owner, Michael, has a Mensa-level knowledge of wine, and he uses that knowledge to guide you in your perfect tasting experience with every bottle. He truly understands terroir, and he lets you know when and how to drink the wine to capture its essence. Michael recommended to me a red wine to drink when the weather turned crisp, which I was able to do while away in the Gorge with my fella. His understanding of time and place with a bottle enhances each tasting experience. Michael and his wife Meredith were wonderful hosts for me with a private event (yes, the shop does private events!) and guided us around an entire region to taste a variety of deliciousness. Each wine was accompanied by its own origin story, complete with a painted picture of where the wine was created so that it felt as if when you closed your eyes, you were magically whisked away to that place. I've learned so much about wine by tasting at this shop, and I've expanded my taste to include wines that I didn't even know existed. This wine shop is truly a gem.

And, the E&R Hit List - which is a carefully selected range of moderately priced wines in a number of different styles and varietals, all featured at the front of the shop for ease of purchase. I love this place and go frequently - and have for a number of years. I never cease to be amazed at the depth of knowledge of both Ed and Richard (E and R). They are veritable encyclopedias of wine and culture. I really want to be a wine-person, and fake my way through a tiny bit of knowledge; but every time I am in the shop, they politely help to expand my modicum of knowledge without making me feel like an imposter. They're so great! My only regret is the fact that I can't seem to ever make one of their tastings. They always fall on a night when we have another engagement or event. They are women-owned, family-owned, and LGBTQ-owned. They have fun names for their wine like Drop Dead Red, Bad Girl Blanc, Wine Bunny Blush, as well as a Pride line (plus more typical malbecs, cab, pinots, etc). They recently accommodated an unusual request from me. I was able to pick up a couple bottles on a day they're normally closed. They were responsive via text and made it easy for me, making my bad planning into a non-issue. Super grateful for that!

I'm not a fan of sweet wines and was hesitant with the moscat. But it was "mild" enough that I told my wife that I could drink a glass of it. One thing to understand is that this is an urban winery. It is located in an industrial area--very much a unique setting for a winery. They make all their wines on site and source their grape a within a 4 hour drive. It is a cool spot with great wines. I have been wanting to visit their winery which is located in the Columbia Gorge, but its a far trip for me so when I heard that they opened their tasting room in Portland downtown, I was so excited! Today I finally got to visit their beautiful and cozy tasting room located on Fremont st. in Portland. They have their winery-exclusive bottles as well as distribution wines, and a very reasonable tasting menu, with 4 Bubbles for $25 and mix of 6 varietals for $35, which is a must try if you're new to their wines. The service was top notch and the staff were so knowledgeable and could tell you everything from where the grapes are grown and how they're aged. I absolutely loved their 2023 Sparkling Chenin Blanc, which is made Prosecco style, mildly dry with great balance of bubbles. They also have Gamay Noir, which I highly recommend if you're into easy, light reds. Chardonnay is also so special, slightly tart and puckery, aged in both Stainless Steel and French Oak! I can go on and on... They have a Wine Club membership as well. Most wines are $30-$42 (some are $20s and even $84), moderately priced with excellent quality, highly worth it. Their famous Tempranillo Rosé and Heavy Glow which is a sparkling rosé at Whole Foods and they're some of their most popular bottles. I can't wait to come back.

I indulged in a tasting which included 3 sets of 2 paired wines from bubbles to white to reds. Every pairing had an interesting story attached, making the tasting even more charming. The wines, host, and tasting room were absolutely delightful. Such a welcoming and kind environment. Just like my friends, I'll continue to spread the word on this delightful wine tasting.

Barley whiskeys made with ancient, heritage and heirloom barley growing in the wondrous valleys and prairies of Washington and Oregon. Best is always local in my book. Mark whiskey steward / owneg set me up a 6-flight. Nose notes, sip, swish swish and swallow - wait for the bite in the throat. I'm not very sophisticated at tasting, but I know what I like and I know how I want sizzle sizzle thrill-izle on my gums permeating thousands of bulbulous linings on mu mouth and tongue - then like a rocket bursting in flames from the launch pad blazing down into space, my throat. Ah! Houston, we have whiskey lift off - particularly the purple Egyptian was fire! Cool the distiller is native American owned - love to our native friends who here thousands and thousands years before the white man. Bird Creek whiskey's taste great exceeding my expect-taste-ins! The barley is clean, salmon safe and pesticide free, some whiskeys will be certified organic in the future Baronese German heritage only grown in Washington. The purple Egyptian is an ancient grain 7000 years old. I thought I could smell the field when I stuck my nose in the glass. It's grassy. Full pint single cast and small batch full pint were great - yet the purple Egyptian (originally from middle East, Caspian Sea region traveled to Egypt to make beer) delivered a floral fruity and caramelized sweet taste with a shot of spice. Ah! Master whiskey mind and owner, Mark, took me on a journey of the grains and whiskey tastes, but I gotta be honest after sipping 7 whiskeys it was all a taste bud blur but for sure I knew I wanted a bottle of the purple Egyptian to go! By the way, I discovered this whiskey shopping the PSU farmers market. Bird Creek had a little booth set up and although in the morning I'm not ready for whiskey I had to give it a try. The fire and the spice hit me delightfully. And I knew I had to get over to the tasting room. Been there done that and wanna be there do that again. The tasting room is conveniently located with Portland coffee roasters, also Mark's brainchild. And got to check into joining the whiskey club that Mark is gonna start.
