Area 51 has incredible ice cream. The staff is friendly and encouraged me to try a few flavors so I would have the best ice cream for me. I tried their hot toddy ice cream, the lemon icebox, the peanut butter and the Old Dominic Bourbon Butter Pecan and my favorite was the butter Pecan. I got two scoops and the cost was just over seven dollars. The place had a cool vibe tying in aliens and again, the staff were incredibly outgoing. I would definitely recommend Area 51 Ice Cream and when I am back in the Hernando, Mississippi area, I will definitely come back here. Overall, I have to give Area 51 Ice Cream five stars and applaud Area 51 Ice Cream for bringing great ice cream to Hernando, Mississippi. One of the favorite ice cream joints I tried on my cross country trip. So many flavors that are done really well. Loved the Bourbon Salted Pecan, creamy and such a rich flavor. Savored it all and so much salty, sweet flavor. The Mexican Hot Chocolate was also fantastic and they didn't shortsell the spice level. A nice spicy kick with the cream chocolate. Delicious! Hubbs and I stopped by here when we were in the area. It was pretty cool and had some unique flavors! It seems like they make everything from scratch which is awesome. I didn't like the balsamic strawberry because it had a weird after taste but I did like the other strawberry flavors we got. I really liked the Mexican Hot Chocolate because it has a spicy kick to it! Hubby wasn't expecting that so he wasn't as big of a fan. I definitely recommend getting a second flavor to balance it out a little. This is the best ice cream place I've ever been to, we go here at least once a month. Their ice cream is very thick and creamy and the flavors are amazing, and sometimes unique. Any salted flavor, coconut, peanut butter, and pumpkin are the best. The mint chocolate chip, and chocolate cookies and cream are the only flavors I've gotten that I thought were just good, and not amazing, I won't get them again. Also, Their chocolate ice cream isn't very chocolatey, but other than that, amazing. The service is ok, not super outgoing, but still good, you can sample any flavor you want. read more

This place is pretty good. I've driven by Area 51 a few times and on Father's Day after dinner we decided to try it. I'm happy we did. As soon as you walk in the door you're greeted with the scents of cream, butter and sweats. There were a few unique flavors and seasonal favorites available. I enjoyed the Blueberry Goat Cheese or something like that...it's was the bomb. I think I heard it's a number one seller. My waitress at ACs (where we went for Father's Day dinner) recommended it. The staff was friendly and efficient. There was no waiting around. :-). I like that. Additionally, the dining area was clean and there was plenty of room between tables. We try to stop here when traveling, as their name implies, this surely has the most eclectic slate of flavors you'll find anywhere. They specialize in small batches, and all are hand made. They have a nice selection of gourmet ice creams. It's a nice environment, parking is convenient. I got a taste of my wife's double dip. She had a scoop of brown sugar coconut and a scoop of salted caramel. It almost made me give up my diet. Sorry no pictures... the ice cream didn't stand a chance. I know Mississippi isn't technically Memphis and is definitely not Tipton county but I've been here twice and they have yet to disappoint, I just keep coming back. I really loved how during my most recent visit they put our requested flavors in pints and let us take waffle bowls home. The staff was so helpful and the ice cream has a unique stretchy texture. Area51in Hernando, Ms is top notch! The ice cream is head and shoulders over your usual go to shops and drive throughs. They make their ice cream in small batches and it is the best!!! I had a scoop of cookie butter and a scoop of lemon in a waffle bowl Okay, the waffle bowl...thin, crunchy, oh my! It is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Definitely one of the better locally owned ice cream/sweet shops I have been to. The flavors change occasionally opening a new door to new and delicious flavors made locally. You will not want to pass this place up when driving through Hernando. Easily accessible right off off of I-55 and Hwy 51 as well. My husband is currently working in the area, and I am here visiting from Phoenix as we are being relocated here by my husband's company. We stopped by tonight and were happy to find an ice cream place that reminded us of home. The women who were working behind the counter were beyond helpful and extremely friendly. We sampled a few flavors and ended up getting the Salted Oreo, Caramelized Banana, and Snickerdoodle. All three were creamy and delicious. I have been going to Area 51 ice cream for years now (since they first opened), and the quality has never seemed to diminish. The ice cream is a perfect mix of creamy and fluffy, and there is a great mix of flavor options. There is usually only 1-2 vegan/dairy free flavors every day. I would recommend checking out their Facebook in advance to see what the daily flavors are. read more

Heck yeah! The closest you'll get to gelato in this area. All homemade stuff with a very creative and changing selection of flavors. Great service too! The only suggestion I have to the owners is to stop the stinginess with napkins. I always have to ask the staff for some. Unnecessary step. read more

More than ice cream is cool here. You're hip and you're loving your best life if you go to this joint. At least that's how all my friends explain it. I must have shown up on the wrong day. Or worse, I'm not hip and I missed my best life? I never was cool. Neither was "experience" at Area 51. Chewy and trendy. That's how I'd describe the ice cream. It literally was chewy, like bubble gum. I tried peanut butter and had to chew it to get it down. I know what you're saying, "It's impossible for cool cream to have produced anything less than heavenly bliss!" I know, right? So I tried another flavor. The mint chocolate chip was less chewy, but still chewy. I swore I blew a bubble once during that "ice dream experience". The establishment is trendy...so trendy that hip Hernando moms can go in and photo their kids blowing bubbles...as they chew their ice cream. That's what everyone did the day I was there. They offer nothing for the "ice gum", just the cream and a load of your cash. I asked Princess Leia behind the counter if they had chocolate syrup or something to put on the space gum. She just looked at me and said, "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderan!" All I can say is, that ice cream simply "aren't the droids I'm looking for!" So, if that's your thing, then chewy away my friend. Chewy away. read more

Hands down one of the best ice cream parlors ever. Family owned and operated. Area 51 has a wide range of creamy, dreamy options. They use local products when available and offer up some tasty creations. Year round staples like Lemon Ice Box, Saigon Cinnamon Snickerdoodle, Bourbon Pecan, to name a few. Some of my favorite seasonal offerings are the Strawberry Buttermilk, Strawberry Balsamic, Blackberry Goat cheese (my favorite, I think), Blueberry Cobbler Crunch to name a few. Hernando is truly blessed to have such a gem right in the middle of our town. Their wait staff is amazing. Awesome in house made ice cream, vast flavor selection, great outdoor seating area, and fun design/decor. Definitely recommend adding the waffle cone bowl with your scoops. We had cookies n cream, caramelized banana, and carrot cake and all were excellent. We appreciated them being one of the few places in town where appropriate COVID precautions were in place for the staff. Friendly team members on a busy Friday evening were happy to take the extra time to help accommodate our child with a severe nut allergy. The ice cream here is out of this world! Lol. I ordered cookies and cream and there was ample cookie bits. Husband ordered caramelized banana and if you are a banana fan like he is - you'd love it! Both servings were rich and creamy! Highly recommend and worth getting off the interstate for! They actually make every delicious flavor in house with real ingredients. The mocha brownie is made with brownies made right in store. A great ice cream shop and the chocolate chip cookies are deliciously chewy. My favorite is the coconut brown sugar...slurp! The owners are very welcoming and friendly. They were a joy to chat with. This place is worth the drive down to Hernando. read more
