I've gotten all 3 of my tattoos here, I can't bring myself to try a new shop because everyone here is an amazing and friendly artist. Liz did my first tattoo in 2019 on my ribs, she was extremely patient with me and always made sure I was comfortable and asked if I needed a break I HIGHLY recommend her she also did my second tattoo in 2020. In town from Wisco, asked the locals and they all said go to 51 in Muskegon. No appointments needed and the artists were very welcoming and honest about the size and location of the tattoos my wife and I were getting. Great atmosphere and would recommend it to anyone. I would NEVER go any where else for my tattoo needs in West Michigan. Not only have they been around for a long time they are the only shop in town that looks professional when you walk in the door. They have art work hanging all over the walls and obviously care about the cleanliness of their shop. Which is kind of a big deal when your asking someone to poke you with needles many, many times. The artists are friendly and helpful. The owner Jeff has done some of my tattoos, he's very easy to talk to and straight up when it comes to what works and what doesn't for a tattoo. I've also been tattooed by Chrissy who has an amazing attention and eye for detail. I guess there are two newer artist there that i don't have any experience with but i'm sure they have the skills. I'm from out-of state (KY) Called to see if I could get an appointment for Saturday (July 23rd), (which was the last day of our vacation in Muskegon). She told me Jimmy had somebody that canceled, and she would book me from 1 til 3:30. I said I would be there on Wednesday (July 20th) at 1 to show them the art I was wanting done. I show up at 1:10 and much to my surprise, the person that canceled, re-booked and I got sent packing. I've got work done at Forever Ink in Grand Rapids, and they do great work. Wish I would have called there, but we were staying right at the ShoreLine Hotel. Less than a mile from 51. Never again will call 51, and we make 2 trips a year to the Great Western MI read more

I have two tattoos from here that went really well and then scheduled a third tattoo and when I showed up they said someone had supposedly called and canceled my tattoo appointment. I drove 40 minutes for my appointment and they wouldn't get me in and were rude when I told them it wasn't me that called to cancel my own appointment that I scheduled two weeks in advance. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because they gave me my deposit back despite being rude throughout my interaction with them. Very upset to have such a terrible experience after two great experiences years apart. read more

Heard they do great tattoos. My son drew a picture I wanted to get tattooed. He was all exited to show them the picture I was going to get, but instead was told to leave because no kid policy. I've gotten both of my tattoos done by Liz at Area 51 and she does a GREAT job! I've also seen work of the other artists and heard lots of great things about them. They're very friendly, professional, and most importantly - good at what they do. They give you excellent art, they can even draw up something; if you have an idea, they can draw it up and make it come to life. They also aren't terribly expensive. They do have a $60 minimum, but they don't overcharge at all. I will get every tattoo I get from the artists at 51. read more
