Excellent Sales, Poor Workmanship, Ignored by the Company I found AZ Shade Masters at a recent home show and was impressed with their presentation, product, and information about pergola options. I obtained bids from four firms and AZ Shade Masters provided a detailed and competitive bid for my planned 4K Aluminum pergola. Unfortunately, the installation is where things went sideways, and AZ Shade Masters ignored my concerns: 1. White caulk on the roof is visible from ground level - The installer advised "I" can fix this by painting the caulk with matching spray paint, but it may take several coats. 2. Closer inspection with a ladder revealed caulk haphazardly applied with drips left wherever they fell. 3. Frame beams were cut too short, and gaps are filled with wide beads of painted caulk. 4. Metal shavings were left in the rain gutter along with a metal scrap cut to allow water drainage. 5. Gussets of unequal length were accidentally installed requiring the correctly sized shorter gusset to be replaced to match the longer to avoid leaving exposed holes in the posts. The installers had the design plan in hand but suggested they could install my pergola however I wanted. I stressed several times they should follow the plan and was forced to correct them when they attempted to deviate (for example: eliminating gussets when they were to be included and sloping the frame beams instead of installing them level). One even suggested I was "OCD" for insisting they follow the plan. (I DID accept one of their suggestions and shortened the pergola height by six inches which was a solid recommendation). After discovering the caulk issues, I texted photos to both my salesman and the company manager. I also left voicemails and a message with the showroom. I connected with the salesman who advised some aspects of the caulking are "normal" but not all and he deferred to his manager for any remediation. I have heard nothing since from AZ Shade Masters. While the crew was personable, installation quality leaves much to be desired (the photos speak for themselves). I should note the installers have the customer sign a form that there are no concerns after installation is complete. I signed as I was largely satisfied and the pergola looks good at first glance, but closer inspection reveals issues not apparent from ground level. These issues combined with the lack of response from the company prevent me from recommending AZ Shade Masters. read more

They sent someone out to address the lights issue, but they discovered that the correct lights are low voltage & couldn't complete the job. The guy that called to fix the horrendous caulking job kept rescheduling and never called again. No follow up whatsoever from AZ Shade Masters. A big fat zippo. Horrible experience! No communication! Ignores phone calls and texts. Seems like the installers are more interested in selling side work then getting the job done. Matt their lead installer is an emotional basket case and totally unreliable. They make "dropping the ball" an art, leaving you hanging without even a phone call! They broke a water line in our backyard and tried to fix it, we left on vacation flooded the back yard. Had me buy material to finish the project, after dozens of unanswered calls and texts, finally, let me know they weren't qualified to do the job and tried to pass me off to someone else. I ended up having another contractor come in clean up their mess and finish the job. We have a spa cover to build and other patio work but will not do business with them again! (BTW I sent them this prior to posting and no response.. they just don't care)! read more

We were looking to add a little shade to our back yard and to our back yard as well as some shade for our kitchen area. We had several companies come out and take a look, but were blown away by AZ Shade Masters. We were looking for a very custom structure that would compliment the modern angular feel of our house. They did not disappoint. It's like we have a completely new room to the house! They were very professional with their communication and when some of the pieces arrived at their shop and were slightly damaged, they called to delay the install by one week in order to get everything perfect. All of the install crew were clean and courteous. They left the site cleaner than when they came, and in genuinely seemed like they had fun with the project. The pergola is up again. They installed a new one with steel footings and four bolts. It certainly looks solid. I was assured this will stand up to the weather. Time will tell. They left a gap at the base and said their travertine guys would call to fix that. No call yet. They also left a bit of a mess this time. There was metal in the pool (see pic) and debris swept into piles behind my waterfall. Some of the cross panels are dented up, too. Which they also said they'd fix. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of gutter downspout will work for the patio cover? I was very surprised they do not have downspouts that work with their product. They installed my cover last fall and it is basically unusable because they drilled a hole in the gutter and when it rains the water comes out and falls 8 feet to the patio and splashes over the back of the house and patio furniture. The spot where they drilled the hole doesn't line up with any gutter attachments and the hole is too small for any adapters. The gutter seems to be built into the cover and doesn't seem to be removable. read more

My wife and I had had recently refinanced our home loan so we could redo our back yard for our three little ones to have somewhere fun to play and our older 2 could hang out with friends. We researched several patio covering companies and landed on AZ Shade masters. They have tons of great reviews and the pictures on the website were great. We called and had Travis Martin come out and give us a quote. Price was great, timeline seemed do able, so we went for it. We signed the contract and it gave us an 8 to 10 week timeline. That was back in August. Broke ground on Nov 17th and failed the first inspection with the city because the footers did not have rebar in them. Cement poured and posts installed( still haven't passed the first city inspection). City came back out and circled many things on the provided plans and failed it for a second time. Installers showed up and said don't worry about it, happens all the time and reassured that Travis Campbell, General Manager and Johnny Ginger, construction manager, were working with the city to get done. Installation of the primary structure was completed and crew was paid, my fault. In retrospect I should have held payment until the job was done and had passed all inspections. So now here we are months later, dozens of phone calls, text messages and emails later and now finally, after 4 inspections, just had the post footings passed . Still waiting to have the attachment to the house redone correctly and the outlets/ fan boxes installed. read more

One of the best experiences we had in home improvement. I highly recommend you give this company a try. We had a pergola built by them after a variety of quotes. They are a smaller company than many but have loca presence. They were able to complete the job is a least 3 months faster than other estimates, given the material and labor shortages at a reasonable price. Typically, as was in this case, the bid specs guys (Josh) was thorough and on top of the project, and we appreciated his reworking our project to get to our desired final plan. However, our experienced in the past with other home improvement was the follow-though was not on point. AZ Shade Masters was an exception - their installation crew was always on time on spec- very very courteous-involved us in final review -just so absolutely unbelievable helpful that I honestly never experienced an install like this. The workmanship was excellent also! This whole company has just a great attitude around its customers that is hard to find from service companies anymore. My review is mainly on customer service. We signed our contract in March but the process didn't start until the end of May. We had to reach out to them to figure out what was happening and after a few tries we received an update. When they dug the holes, inspection failed twice. They also removed more pavers than they needed to but we were told that they would be placed back. After the cover was finished, the people who came to install the fan said that the receiver wasn't working, so we asked for a replacement. During that week of waiting for the receiver, no final inspection was done. When we signed the contract we were told that they'd do a final inspection to make sure the job got done correctly. The pavers were never replaced, we contacted them through text and called their office we but didn't get an answer. During this process it almost seemed like they didn't want to make the drive out here unless they had other projects to do based on comments they made. I love my patio cover but I just wish they would've finished what they said the would get done. read more

The salesman gave us a quote to move the supports that hold up our carport, three feet, to allow more parking space. The workers came and said they were moving the supports out TWO INCHES. The contract clearly states 3'. After 15 minutes on the ohone, they stated that they would need to order different brackets and would call to set up a new appointment to do the installation. That was on 6/18/18. We didn't hear back. I called the week of July 19th, explained the situation and requested an update. I was told that the project manager would call me. No call back. I called again at the end of the week and was assured that someone would get back to me. No one did. I called Monday (yesterday) and the project manager answered. He apologized and told me they were "trying to reach" their engineer to see if they could safely move the supports out that far. He did call me back today to tell me that the engineer said that it could not be done. It's now 7/16/18. Why should it have taken a whole month to tell me they couldn't let me know they wouldn't do the job? Just irritating. Hope you have better luck. They had a great five-star rating. You can't always trust that, I guess. read more

Arizona Shade Masters was amazing, starting with the estimator Jeff--he was really the only person from the numerous companies we contacted who didn't gripe about some of the (very minor) challenges of our particular job, and didn't act like it was the end of the world that we wanted foundations that had actually been approved by an engineer. To the contrary it seemed like that was actually their standard operating practice to do things above board. He was also the only one who came to give an estimate in a mask (in the height of the pandemic!) which was very appreciated. Once we got to construction, Mark Lewis's crew arrived on time to start the build and they were really great to work with. Mark talked through the scope with us and we made some minor changes to make the end product better and they did a phenomenal job. Could not be happier with how the colors match with our house and the final product. We don't even want to go inside now, wish we could just live out under there! read more

We had a pergola added to our back patio and it was great, however the original installation couldn't be done as planned. It was ok but esthetically it looked slightly unbalanced. They agreed to add a small piece to balance it out but then communication stopped. I tried for weeks to get some response and nothing. I wrote a review and mentioned the lack of customer service and suddenly they got ahold of me. They came out yesterday and added the piece and it looks great. The response time to emails now is fantastic! I must have caught them in a busy time and fell through the cracks but they came through in the end. The finished project is beautiful and well built. As a newly recent homeowner to a new build, choosing the right contractors is extremely important in all aspects. Although the product was impressive, from a HVAC contractors point of view, the install and follow up for the side plates was disappointing. The installers left scrap metal shards randomly around the yard. Mind you it's a new build so currently the majority of our backyard is just dirt. The fact that I also have young children in my home, put them at risk. They should consider themselves extremely lucky I found the scraps first because it would've escalated fast. The post were scratched during install and there are a couple spots that are not leveled. The gutters are sitting at an angle and there is a gap from the ceiling to the gasket in between the first angled fitting. It has still not rained yet, so I am curious as to how well the gutters will drain. Although the owner Russ made things right and had the GM Travis come back out to fix the installers mistakes, I am still not pleased with the total outcome. You would think after spending a large amount of money on an investment to your new home, the providing contractor would strive for perfection as I do with every single call. I'm sure they would not appreciate me coming to their homes and only fixing their AC partially. As much as I would like to, I can o my give the company a 2.5 stars. We actually met Ron about two years ago at the home show in Phoenix and he came over to give us a quote. But things happen and we didn't get it done. But we kept his info and we called him and he came back to give us a quote and right there we told him to schedule it cause we wanted our patio cover. So couple a weeks later we had it installed and we love our patio cover it feels and looks beautiful on our house. They estimated that the lead time could take up to six months. The construction was completed in just under 5 months. Johnny Ginger, the Operations Manager, and his team built a beautiful pergola that exceeds our original expectations. (BTW, I never give 5 stars as no company is perfect. Should be a zero rating..I met Jeff at the home show in early March and liked what they were offering. He came out a week or so later and gave me an estimate. I agreed to the estimate and he assured me I would have a packet for the HOA within a week. Around that same time period I went to the showroom on Bell and met Cindy and Russ. They showed me around and Cindy scheduled us for mid May to start the project. I never received the HOA packet or heard from anyone for weeks. I called Cindy and Jeff several times and Jeff got a hold of me and explained that he was very sick and apologized so I gave him another shot. He came back out in late April and took more measurements and I signed the work contract and he assured me that I would get the HOA packet within a few day but once again I had to call for it and got it. I pressed my HOA to approve the work and they did within a week. I notified Cindy and Jeff that the HOA approved the work and heard nothing for a few weeks. Than Russ came out to check the patio and wanted to change the plan to not digging the concrete and placing the structure above the existing concrete to avoid the city permit which I did not like. than Russ said my existing mister heads were too short and needed to be extend by 3 inches. I called snior mist and they came out and replaced all the mister heads at the cost of $240. I email Cindy and asked her to let Russ know the misters were done and she acknowledged my email and said she would let Russ know. I than emailed Cindy a few days later to see if we had a possible start date. I got no response and no phone calls from anyone and here it is in July. What a waste of four months with this company. Thank goodness I did not give them a deposit. I would stay clear of them. read more
