We adopted a dog from them a couple weeks ago and everyone was so nice when we came in to meet him! I guess the dog we picked was a favorite and it really showed because everyone wanted to come say bye to him and was so excited he was getting a forever home and he was so excited when they came out which really shows how well they treated him. You can tell how much they care about the dogs they have there!! They also wanted updates on him and how he was settling in and it was just all around an awesome experience and we absolutely LOVE our new dog!! He is such a sweetie pie and exactly how they described him. I got a like 8 page meticulous medical report on him and his health because he was part of a group of dogs they got from an overcrowded home and quite a few were sick when they got them. It was such a great experience and when we are ready to get another dog, we will absolutely be back! Couldn't recommend this rescue more!!! read more

We went to Petsmart in 2012 for cat food. Had no plan to come home with a dog. This small dog rescue pulled small dogs from the kill shelter who were going to to be euthanized Monday, and take them to Petsmarts to find them a home. We knew no one knew much about the little fella. He melted our heart, and our daughter had fish, hermit crabs, birds, and cats, but never had a dog yet. He melted our hearts. When we picked him up he grabbed onto us. And didn't want to be put back down. Needless to say we came home with a pup and cat food. He needed some veterinary care. After a week he was doing great. He has gluten, soy, and dairy allergies just like us, so he was a perfect fit. We were perfect for him as well since our eyes were open to his needs and how to feed him. We have had him 13 years now. He is 14 and is still the same happy silly pup. I don't know how they obtain dogs these days, but we are thankful he is a part of our lives. read more

My experience adopting a 9 or old shih-tzu has soured me on evercadopting another pet. I later learned just shortly after adopting her for $400 that she was actually much older than nine years. Two vets estimated her age to be 12 to 14 years old. We found out she couldn't see much at all. Thiscrescue had to know this information already. There was no mention at all about her health. I believe the foster knew too. The foster told us she felt this shih-tzu was much older!! Bottom line, I would not have adopted her if I knew she was much older than nine. $400 to get her at the end of her life. Sad. I love dogs and am giving her the best end of life years I can. But this experience with AZ small dog rescue was like a switch and bait, thought I was adopting a 9 or old with some decent years left. Instead, she is much older, blind and not healthy. These rescue places need to be more honest in their advertising. read more

My team and I volunteered here a few weeks ago and it was such a great organization. Dani is the Volunteer Coordinator, and she was very helpful getting everyone together and help get the area organized and cleaned. We also helped introduce some of the doggies together which was fun to see them interact. Not all of their dogs are small though. They had a litter of Pitty pups that were so stinking cute. They just were spayed and neutered so we helped clean them up since they were ready for adoption. I would love to volunteer again when it's not so hot out. read more

Never, ever buy a dog from this rescue. This is a a horrible, unethical bait & switch operation. We rescued "Romeo" from ASDR, after browsing and he caught our eye. They let us visit with him, told us stories about him, and even his description read "sweet and loving, great for small children and other animals, great with both genders" etc. Shortly after taking Romeo home, he started acting very sick and aggressive. We started him with PetSmart training sessions. However, he kept on getting more aggressive. He actually ended up mauling one of our, male, family members on the arm. Broke through the skin and really injured them. We got opinion from one of our friends who is also a doctor and she diagnosed him with kennel cough and suggested we take him back. When we took him back, they were not kind at all about the situation. They basically denied that he was sick at all, and all they could say is "our apologies for him biting". We didn't get any form of refund even though we only had him for around a week. When we later checked their website, they immediately put Romeo back on the website and failed mention that he attacks people, men, to be specific. DO NOT EVER USE THIS SHELTER!! read more

We recently lost our furry chiweenie daughter, Pumpkin, and were just trying the survive through our grief. Out of the blue, my husband sends me a picture of a tiny tan chihuahua mix named Maya. We decided to go meet her and another pooch named Louie. In the photos, Louie looked a lot like our Pumpkin. I was mostly curious to see if we could see ourselves adopting but as the house was just so quiet and sad without our golden Pumpkin running around, I figured we have nothing to lose just meeting them. Well, we came in and I instantly fell in love with Maya. We were told she had been in there for a month, which puzzles me. She is so sweet and chill and we had that instant connection in the meeting room. We met Louie as well, and you could tell he was just so scared. I sat on the floor and he decided he'd come close to me to snuggle. The next day we came back to adopt both dogs. The people who run and work at AZ Small dog rescue are angels! They really care about each pooch and are doing their very best to make sure they are adopted out with families who are a good fit. I have recently been fostering dogs from ASDR enjoying my time with these precious animals. They have lived in terrible conditions mostly although some given up for unknown reasons. This rescue is very clean, caring, capable and kind. They do everything they can to rescue, treat, vet care, update rabies vaccines, microchip, neutering/spay, fostering, volunteering and more. If interested in adoption go to the rescue and look at dogs available, Petsmart on most Saturdays or call the rescue for inquiries. I'm so very glad I found them, I love fostering and I am now the new owner of a very loving Chihuahua/dachshund mixed male dog (11 pounds). read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. It's a bait and switch operation - beware. We were at an adoption event found a sweet dog and decided to adopt after spending 20 minutes with it and no issues worth noting. There was no mention of behavior issues or medical issues just a nice paragraph listing all the great things. Within the first few hours of being home we started noticing some behavior issues and by the end of the night the dog was charging and snapping at us. We stated looking through the paperwork and there it was .. a three page breakdown from the original Humane Society on his aggressive behaviors and how this dog was on the kill list for these issues. By the next morning I'd been bitten - hard multiple times unprovoked. We decided this was not a good fit, and called the shelter to bring the dog back in. We told them the issues how we had gotten bit and that this dog needed professional help and to not be around any children. they said we could get a credit towards another dog, but wouldn't get our money back and after 30 days the credit became a "donation". We had the dog for less than 24 hours.The NEXT day that same dog was posted on their page available for adoption with the same cute message about how loving and great he is. No mention of the behavior issues and no mention of not being around children. And the medical issues.. the dog was also excessively scratching itself and we'd noticed he had a limp, poor hygiene and had puked 2 times while in our care. To note- We did some digging, and the same dog had been previously adopted out before us and returned for the same reason 3 days later. The shelter was absolutely disgusting on the inside... everything was dirty, falling apart and cluttered. I mean paperwork, old pizza boxes on the front desk, boxes and boxes of unorganized stuff EVERYWHERE, cabinets, falling apart, walls peeling, dirty floors. This place needs to be shut down. They go out find dogs on the kill list and adopt them out not mentioning any issues and then the dogs get returned and they do it all over again. AZ Small Dog rescue are scammers and fraudulent. Buyer beware... Run far far away from this place. read more

We absolutely love this rescue group for introducing us to our new family member. They do an amazing job at taking candid photos of their adoptees, and that's what initially drew us in. When we went to meet "Rolo" we were told that she just wasn't doing well in the shelter environment. I could tell the workers really cared for their animals and I told them I had worked in an animal shelter previously, and understood the trauma that dogs experience there. We asked to meet her anyway, and they consented. They were appropriately vetting us, just as much as we were vetting "Rolo". It took her a full 30 minutes to even take a treat from my hand, but the patience paid off. Within a few more minutes, she was giving kisses....and in a few more, she was in our laps. She knew we were the right family for her! She chose us! Fast forward to some much needed time, attention and training, and "Rolo", now Luna, is a completely different dog, and we adore her so much! This rescue group not only recognizes the needs these dogs have to live better and new, more fulfilling lives, but does their due diligence in matching their new owners....because they legitimately care about their future. Having worked in the industry prior, I've seen rescue groups work for pure profit and a quick overturn, and I can attest that this is NOT the case. If you want to find a rescue animal that fits your lifestyle, and your family, take the time to listen to the rescuers that have worked closely with them and know their background. Do not waste your time. On the way home from being denied an adoption my 5 year old daughter said she was "sad and angry." When I asked why, she said because "they were not very nice to us. I feel like they didn't think we were a good family". We are a loving family, own a home with a fence, no pool, we work from home so the dog would practically never be left alone but apparently they thought our meet n greet "didn't go well". Allegedly, if you have another pup and they aren't all that interested, it's not a good fit. Why?! They weren't aggressive towards each other and weren't scared of each other?! Apparently if dogs do not become instant best friends in the 8x8 piss filled room, it's not a match. Also, this place is not in a great neighborhood soooo if you come by yourself bring a friend because there are homeless everywhere. read more

I would like to let you all know how great AZ Small Dog Rescue is run. We are now fostering in another state and it has been so different. We are still volunteering with a great group of people saving dogs it's just not the same. We currently are fostering a momma and her puppies. Last night the puppies started having liquid stools. Today I picked up meds for the puppies. Ok, so this is when I start really missing the staff at AZSDR, meds were always clearly labeled which I appreciated. Puppies with AZSDR are vaccinated on schedule and well taken care of. Fosters for AZSDR have a great support system. I am so thankful for how AZSDR assists fosters. Love my dog from AZ Small Dog Rescue. Here's an updated photo. I've had Peanut (formerly Cruz) for over 7 months. He did not show well at the rescue because he was afraid. So he stayed in the rescue for nine months. I have to say he's the best small dog I've ever had. He has made great strides since then. My husband and I love him so much and he also gets along great with our new Australian Shepherd. They love each other! If you adopt a small dog, give it time. My veteran husband lost his dog after it's cancer/blindness took its life,We went to small dog rescue to look for a new pet for him.Maybe it was my Trump hat 2022 the gal in charge gave me the cold shoulder.My 9 dogs all rescues have their o wn sun room to potty in,pads and turf changed daily a day bed,lots of windows,right off my bedroom.Also just finished a 30 feet,covered porch and deck just for them out a dog door on other side of bedroom.And yes their are 8 dog beds on mine.When I showed the woman in charge pictures s h e said,"oh,now your changing your story",and refused to let us see her dogs,My husband lives in a sun city,we spent 8k on a fenced patio and garden just for his dog.This old gal has mental issues,I wouldn't want her for my owner if I was a pet.We only spend $ on our pets,I make all dog food myself.But we left with bad feelings,my husband even more depressed.She seems to be very angry and shouldn't be in charge of any pet rescue.We a l so never go away for more than a few hours to shop. read more

DO NOT adopt from this rescue. They tell you the dogs have been vet checked and healthy but ours had a highly contagious parasite the first week we brought her home so likely many other dogs have it as well. And unlike many other rescues in the area, they do not stand by their dogs and support you with vet bills in the first 30 days. They just say sucks to be you - and you have no choice but to pay it and make the dog healthy. Also the shelter itself is disgusting. We were there during covid when they were supposedly cleaning between every visit and even then I felt like I was entering a meth house. The facility is gross and its no wonder their dogs have parasites. read more

I recently adopted a dog from this wonderful rescue organization and couldn't be happier. All of the employees and volunteers truly love and want the best for these dogs as well as their new families. They've already checked in several times to see how we were doing. I was happy that I got to see first hand the back area where all of the dogs get to go play, get fresh air, exercise, and special time with staff and volunteers. I volunteer for this group and just want to thank them for taking in so many dogs with (expensive) medical needs and for being the only rescue to create an actual Parvo Ward, staffed by caring and experienced men and women who have the knowledge and patience to treat these poor babies around the clock, while never passing the costs onto adopters. They also help other shelters with Parvo puppies. There are constant fundraising efforts going on because AZSDR does not say NO or turn away dogs in need of help. Wow really impressed with Arizona Small Dog Rescue. Our new little dog was so carefully detailed description to the T. We knew he would need lots of love and know he is now in forever home and never moved around again and know he will be safe and spoiled. He had full file on care he has had and vet visits and show his full history so when take him to our vet we dont have to guess his health issues.
