THE place for us in CenTex for pottery supplies. The Hop Queen has been making and selling pottery for quite a few years now, and this is the best place for all her supplies. The shop is always well stocked with all the tools and glazes needed, and you can buy bulk clay in a wide variety of firing ranges, and also non fired clay. Also has glass tools and supplies. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They can also order in equipment, (like kilns) so even if it's not on the floor, you can still get it. Their website lists all their myriad services and items. Doesn't matter if you are a professional, or just starting out, this is the place to check out! read more

They have the the best selection of kiln furniture in town, and carry all types of clay. Kilns, Potters wheels, sculpting tools and ceramic art seem to be a fixture here, but they do provide art supplies in all medias, and have an extensive inventory on site. Give this place a visit. Well, not a whole lot of options when it comes to ceramics supplies. However, I LOVE Armadillo! They have great people and it's one of those stores that I have to make a list for or I will walk out with half the store. The clay is great. I particularly like the Baclones White. The people are knowledgeable. I have had to ask technical questions about products before and have always received a good answer. And, they have almost anything you can imagine related to clay and hot glass. Get on their mailing list and you can find out about the mini-classes/workshops that they often hold. read more

Unfortunately, I have consistently had bad experiences at Armadillo Clay. Unfortunately, it has happened over four consecutive occasions. The two people who have been at the front desk (a slender woman and a blond guy with curly hair -- I don't remember their names) have never been nice or pleasant to me. I understand that people can have a bad day or have problems from time to time, but nonetheless that is not a reason to consistently treat me rudely or unprofessionally. I will be looking for another place in the city where I can take my pieces to be put in the kiln as well as to buy my work tools and my clay. I refuse to continue being treated in such a rude and unprofessional manner by the people people in Armadillo Clay and I would warn others as well. read more

I visit Armadillo Clay nearly every time I come to Austin. In addition to ceramics they are the only dealer I know of in the area of fusable System 96 glass. They maintain a large selection of glass sheets, strips, rods, stringers and frit. There is also a wide variety of molds and tools. I even bought my Skutt kiln from them which I love! Massive assortment of clay everything. A potter's paradise and then some. 1000's of SKU's of tools, wire cutters, slips, runs and errors. Seriously, if you screw up your firing at home bring your bisquewear here they contract fire daily. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. They don't seem to not like their jobs. read more

The book section alone eclipses the ceramics and glass shelves of any bookstore in town, and glaze colors number in the hundreds. Still, the staff is the best reason to visit this store. I never fail to learn something new, even if I'm only stopping by for a single sheet of glass. The non-profit Empty Bowl Project in Elgin, Tx that helps support the food pantries in Bastrop County needed help with the glazing of the soup bowls everyone had painted. The volunteer that normally does the glazing was having health issues. The Empty Bowl Project folks reached out to Armadillo Clay asking for help. EBP delivered the bowls (about 30), supplied the glaze and just needed it applied and then fired. Armadillo Clay not only charged The Empty Bowl for their help, they only glazed the painted spots on the bowls. Who would do that? The bowls were returned to Armadillo Clay to be fixed and upon return they are still wrong. This is my personal outrage and not that of the EBP. read more

Amazing staff! They truly care about the local pottery community and the educational community. I have brought several groups of special needs students there and they have always been extremely helpful, patient, and nurturing of their creativity. I cannot say enough about the folks at Armadillo Clay! I have been totally impressed with their help and attitude! I wanted to make my own prototype to make a cast and knew absolutely nothing about casting. They were so informative that they answered questions I didn't even know to ask! I expected quick answers and to be shuffled out the door, but they spent enormous amounts of time working with me until I was comfortable with my project. Anytime I had a question, I'd call and got an immediate response. I mostly worked with Melanie Schopper (whose knowledge is truly incredible) but the entire staff got involved with problems that were not the norm. They totally rock in my book! read more
