What an excellent little shop! Much more intimate and less distracting than going to Joann's or another big box store. The little place was loaded with all sorts of great prints that I certainly haven't seen elsewhere. I quickly loaded up my hand with 14 different fat quarters, dreaming of projects that one day may or may not come into fruition. Such is the way! What I especially liked was the old school furniture tucked away in places throughout the store. I saw a couple of old Singers with their lovely polished wood, and they made excellent use of old cubbies for letter sorting. I'm a mild antique buff (rubbed off on me from my dad and his mother) and appreciate when something old finds a new home and use. The cubbies were filled with 4x6 postcards of fun quilts you could try, with the design on the glossy front and the instructions on the back. I believe these were free of charge, to help give customers inspiration. Too neat! There was an ample selection of colors as well as more exciting fabrics. Many floral designs and stately or muted tones of browns. Definitely good for finding a fabric to coordinate with but not detract from your main piece. I picked up a couple of plaids, which are always useful. There was a seasonal section (currently loaded with Christmas fabrics) that I imagine likely rotates throughout the year. There was a sale section for bolts that were running low, and cheapo $5 baggies of various fabrics that mix well. There was a section with felt and a small amount of flannel. Lots and lots and lots of bagged/boxed sets to choose from that have everything you need for a particular design (not my cup of tea-- designing my own piecing is highly satisfying to me). You'll also find other helpful items like thread, buttons, cutters, and the like. A space in the back with a large table for various lessons/classes (looked like there was one going on while we were browsing, but I didn't want to disturb them). I've been shopping at Gauge for years and it's easily my favorite yarn shop in the Austin area…read more Though the shop appears small, Gauge has a fantastic selection of yarns in a variety of weights and price points. There is also a nice selection of knitting needles and crochet hooks. The owner and employees are all extremely sweet and helpful while being great at letting you browse around at your own pace. They've custom ordered yarn for me on multiple occasions and are diligent about keeping in touch about the order. There's a nice setup toward the back of the shop for classes or just dropping in to knit for a bit. They have a knitting book lending library too!

Their inventory is all arranged by size, so your smaller strands like sockweight will be toward the front of the place while your thicker worsted and aran weights will be in their little back room. I didn't see much in regard to bulky weight. The back area also has their discounted stock in a little shelf. Peruse that section and you might find a great deal on something that you need. The staff is all very friendly and helpful they helped like four other folks there including one small child who said they had just started crochet. It was very sweet.

But the best thing here are the lessons by Carrie Au. I'm a teacher myself and I can recognize an excellent teacher and Carrie is absolutely that. With just two lessons from her, I was able to basically do everything I needed to make 90% of what I could ever want to make. I then had spent a couple of months crocheting different things and came back for another more advanced lesson. Carrie knows all the yarn arts and can do things both right and left handed. And she has so many helpful tips that she's learned from experience that I never saw on any YouTube video or website tutorial (and in fact there are popular things out there i learned from her were NOT good things to do). If you want to learn (crochet or knitting), so worth coming here to take lessons (beginner through advanced). The other benefit is that their yarns and hooks are good quality so if you start here, you'll have such a better time and be more likely to continue.
