My parents were in town not too long ago, and they wanted to buy handmade ceramics while here. We went to several different places before finally checking out Austin Pottery Studio. The storefront is very inviting and small, but honestly the perfect size. They have everything organized per artist. We took some time checking everything out before deciding on some cute coffee mugs that had a small cowboy boot stamped on the side and "yeehaw" on the bottom. Seriously so cute, and so Austin! We also bought a beautiful oil crock. I can't wait to go back and check out more pieces! Definitely a must when you have visitors in town. read more

I've often wondered about this small business front on Burnet road nestled between a strip of other local businesses. Was it just a warehouse-type space with potters throwing pottery around? Or was it a refined, bonafide pottery school with a curated collection of beautifully made pottery made by local students and instructors of the pottery school? The latter! I was elated to walk into a storefront of amazing pieces for purchase. It's also awesome to know each piece I purchased was made by a student just two feet away in the pottery studio behind the storefront. And the money is going back into their pocket and this awesome school that has offers an array of classes ranging from beginner to pro. Plus, they have several programs and workshops if you're interested in dabbling or going full force Potter. It's all there for you to channel your inner Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. Went there for a wine cup, and then ended up buying six before I got out of there very cool place

I took a wheel throwing class with my boyfriend and we had lots of fun. It was well worth the $60 per person! The instructor was very helpful and humorous. It was smaller class than what I expected (6 of us total). First the instructor showed us all the steps to make a bowl. Then we each got one-on-one time time with her as she guided us through the steps. It was everyone's first time making pottery and everyone's turned out quite nicely! For the one class, people tend to make 2-4 items depending on how much of a natural you are at making them. One person in my class made 4 while the rest of us made 3. At the end we had about an hour to paint and decorate. In about 4 weeks, they'll call when they're ready for pick-up. read more

Terribly disappointing. I signed up for a class earlier this year (2018) and made sure to inform the office that I had no pottery experience. I ended up in an 8 week evening class full of far more experienced students, many of them working on advanced pottery and techniques. The teacher, bless his soul, was super friendly, clearly well-intentioned, but acted more as an advisor to the experienced students than as a class instructor. They dominated the class leaving the less experienced folks (me and one other student) to stumble through some of the basics mostly on our own. (As an example, it was well into my 3rd week when I asked about buying more clay, that my instructor finally explained clay recycling and showed me how to dry out and re-use my clay). Most of the time, I found myself at the wheel, cluelessly playing with mud. If you are experienced, or if you prefer a very unstructured format this might be for you. The overall feel was more like open studio time than a class. There was no real formal didactic instruction. I would normally have chalked this up to "live & learn," except I received a call from the studio towards the end of the course offering early sign up for another set of classes. I briefly explained my experience and the pottery person informed me that I should have never been signed up for that particular class, and that there are other courses and different instructors better suited for beginners. This made me feel super sad that a) I missed out on the opportunity to actually learn and enjoy my time at the pottery studio and b) that they essentially signed me up for an inappropriate course, presumably just to get my business, instead of actually caring for and fostering genuine interest in the craft. I'm not going back to Austin Pottery, but will check out some of the other options in town (someone recently suggested Feats of Clay--stay tuned!). read more

Last weekend I called ahead to try and reschedule a class two weeks out because the person I was going with was not feeling well. I thought the responsible thing to do was let them know and ask about their COVID-19 guidelines. Apparently, they have none because they will not do rescheduling if you're feeling sick. They also have a no refund policy, which is fine I wasn't trying to get a refund, just change the dates. That's really appalling given the current state of the world. I've tried to call a couple times and speak to a manager but they're never available. I'm very upset at this whole situation and will now have to dispute the charges because I've not been able to talk to anyone. I would NOT recommend purely based on this is really some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. read more

What Kit started is continuing in excellent fashion. I started classes here about three years ago and have been an incredible fan since. Patty, one of the instructors, is a phenomenal teacher. I started throwing clay this past January and couldn't have landed at a better place. The owners, instructors and fellow students are supportive and enthusiastic no matter what level they (or you) are at. It's well-organized and efficient, which is impressive considering how many people pass through each week. I've really enjoyed my time here so far! read more
