Today while at the checkout, my service person checked & noticed something wrong. She asked me what isle did this come from i told her which one & she got to it. She got the manager & showed him they both came to me & said in Spanish, we cannot sell this item sir. We notice this may be bad. I thought to myself "Wow! How thoughtful." They immediately went to investigate all the items of the kind on that shelf. I have to say I was impressed by their consideration. They not only protected their business but they apologized & were genuinely concerned about my personal purchase. That's important & rare today. The item was a packaged pastry. They also have some hot foods like chicken quarters and rice with pigeon peas. Extensive butcher options also. I stopped by mostly because I was curious and wanted a snack for the ride home. It's a very solid, small-scaled neighborhood grocery store, located on the northeast corner of Kimball and Armitage. This store specializes Puerto Rican essentials. Do you like coffee? Are you crazy about coffee? Come and worship a wall full of Puerto Rican coffee brands. Well, put God first...I didn't actually encourage you all to convert to a different religion. Hubby and I came over while waiting for our stuffed pizza to be cooked at the Art of Pizza in a nearby neighborhood. It was our first time here. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of produce. They were fresh, well-stocked, yet the prices were just fair in comparison to other local ethnic grocery stores. Their agricultural varieties weren't as eclectic as Cermak Produce, HarvesTime on Lawrence, and Caputo's on Harlem due to their much smaller real estate, but it certainly served the purpose in the Logan Square neighborhood. We purchased five (5) delicious apples, one (1) honeydew melon, two (2) giant pieces of grapefruit (not a bad price for $0.69/lb.), one (1) whole roll of red cabbage, two (2) grande-size avocados ($0.99 each...a seasonable price), and one (1) large bag of spinach. Everything came to $11 and some change. The monitor at each register is large. You can see your purchase itemized, with a matching price listed for each item on the right. I thought it was a nice touch. Sometimes I pass by a random Jewel-Osco and watch an average American family load their van with lots of soda, chips, and boxed/processed food. They cost more and create unnecessary burdens on your health. After all, you are what you eat! I'm preaching to the choir and asking you to switch your diet by switching to a different store to shop! Someone must have OCD at this store. I have never been in a store that is this organized, clean and helpful. Okay might be over-exaggerating but it is very organized. If you're making anything related to Puerto Rican food this is the place to come. It has culantro, aji dulces, ripe plantains (yes you don't have to wait for yours at home), properly cut pernil ready for your oven, assembling your seasoning is required. Puerto Rican run from $3.99 to 9.99. They also have two brands of pre-made sofrito if you're in a rush. Customer service is great. And the shopping atmosphere is really chill and cool. I loved the selection and prices at Armitage the first four times I shopped there and was very satisfied. Indeed the mangoes I got off the priced for quick sale were heavenly. Other than the very narrow shopping aisles, everything else about the shopping experience was lovely. It was different today to my chagrin. Walking my push cart from Armitage Pharmacy, I passed Rico's Supermercado just up an inconvenient block for me to get to Armitage Produce because in the four times I'd previously shopped there I'd developed a fondness for it and an ineffable attraction. Today however, the grocery bagger was, to borrow a lyric from the rock band Yes, acting "the course of evil standing straight." Maybe he needed a break to get out from behind the cash register, go in the alley behind the store and blow a joint to relieve the drudgery and stress. I bought several very heavy items, viz. a watermelon, a cantaloupe, and other moderately heavy items: two large cucumbers, a package of priced for quick sale peppers. Also, I bought some delicate items: fresh tomatoes, mangoes, and kiwis. I also had two cans of unsweetened applesauce I'd brought into the store with me in my book back that I wanted to pack into the cart with the newly bought groceries to relieve the pressure they exerted on the strap holding my book bag around my neck, now I could put them in the push cart without fear the bags and the cans would spill out of the mesh containment of the push cart, cause friction on the wheels or even fall out of the cart altogether. The groceries were packed that way to take home on CTA. I complained before I left the store because the groceries were packed for me in the store's shopping cart. I got outside and loaded them into my push cart to carry on the bus. When I got home however, I discovered the damage to the fruit was worse that I first thought. Even though I was very careful in avoiding blemishes in choosing the cantaloupe it was impossible to avoid them completely. However therse were relatively pretty cantaloupe prices at $2.25 if I recall. There was a worrisome bruise astride the part of the cantaloupe where it attaches to the stem. The blemish seemed evolved whtn I got home as if a malicious finger poked the melon through the minor blemish I was initially worried about. I bought $2.50 worth of kiwis in two priced for quick sale packages, which I have had no troubles with in the past. On the contrary. You know how Aldous Huxley says grace at a meal should be in the eating and the tasting of the food. The kiwis I'd previously acquired made that a felicitous process. Three or four of the seven I bought today are completely smooshed, their juice bleeding all over the polystyrene packaging. I hadn't had a good tomato in years until I bought 5 of them or so in the last two times I was at Armitage. Even they were wanting the full flavor, texture, juiciness of the Illinois tomatoes of my youth. One of the two large tomatoes I bought today, which were even prettier on the outside than those I'd acquired a week or two ago has a rude cut in it as if the package the peppers were packed in slit the skin of the tomato as if yielding to said packaging. The other has a couple of ostensible bruises as if it went a round or two with Brando On the Waterfront, and won't fully reveal their quality until consumed. As I said, I complained and the bagger offered to refund me out and replace the damaged fruit. I didn't want that for several reasons. I didn't want to waste the food when so many in the world are starving, witness Gaza or Sudan. I wasn't sure the damage to the produce was as great as it was until I got it unpacked at home. I didn't want to waste the time. I didn't want to make a likely card-carrying member of the precariat feel more exploited than he already is, paying for Biden's genocide in Gaza and all. And Obama's $2 trillion upgrade of the US America's nuclear arsenal, and the some $800 billion in interest the US national debt costs US taxpayers. How do you refute the irrefutable insanity of building a new generation of nuclear weapons? And it isn't only the US doing it. A naked violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty by the way. We're all aware there's nine nuclear "powers" now, right? It's not just USA! USA! USA! And the Soviet Union. Then after that I went to the kitchen and bathroom products. I grab dishwashing liquid, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, body lotion, conditioner, sponge , hand soap and many more. I put it in the bottom part of the car. Then I bought chips, chocolate, candies, cereal and cookies. I also bought wine, soda, juices and yogurt. Lastly, I bought shrimp, bacon, chicken and fish. Then I went to the counter. I'm surprised when I went to the counter because there were long lines. I'm in the fourth line. After so long it's my turn and I paid for my purchase. I park my car and enter this place. There were a lot of people when I entered. I grabbed a basket and started to shop. I chose a different brand and flavorful cereal. Overall I picked 10 boxes of it. Then I went to the dairy section. I bought a bottle of milk and a bottle of chocolate. I also purchased powdered milk and powdered chocolate. After that I went to the counter and there was a long line. I went to the counter that had a few people. And finally it's my turn. This place was big and spacious. They also have a free parking lot. Sometimes it is already have no vacant to park because a lot of customers park there. s J enter I can see their inventory. It's full of stock and there are some different varieties of products and products they have. Although they have many products I think you will not find anything you need and want. Their customer service was not good. Some staff will not help you because they are busy organizing the inventory. Sometimes you will not see any staff if you need help. I have no choice but to come here since my mom needs condiments and a can of pineapple. I went straight to the pineapple can. There are a lot of brands there. So I purchased the one that my mother wanted. After that I went to the condiments. I purchased different seasonings. Then there were long lines at the counter when I went there. It's great to have a local produce store that celebrates culture. I will say the produce store selections gives a healthy competition to other stores around. But the competition is lacking in the customer service department. The team at the register appeared to lack respect for the elders /customers. My mother, is a sweet elderly lady that barely speaks or complains. She has come home in tears on how the staff at the grocery store has treated her. Going to the supermarket was one of my her favorite tasks to do all until she encountered Armitage Produce staff. The "girl" at the register was snarky and rude when checking out my mother. It's happened in multiple occasions this past year with different staff that work the register. **Please note my mother has been going to this market for over 10 years. The store is such a poor representation of the culture and what a good service should be. I ask the owner publicly to evaluate and measure his team's performance. At the end of the day the team is a representation of the company/ Owner. A more comprehensive hiring systems need to be in place in order to weed out unscrupulous employees. This will elevate the stores integrity. I will be following up with a formal complaint. read more

This place has a lot of great Spanish products but OMG the people that work there are the most rude and incompetent people I've dealt with. I'm in the first line and all the registers have people. I'm next and the lady at the register tells me that register 2 and 3 are open, so I continue putting my things down. She then makes a comment to the bagger that she told me that the other registers are open and I still put my stuff down. I get pissed take my shit off the belt and went to another register. I then get the bagger at that register packing my groceries all stupid and throwing them in my cart. What makes me so mad is that they stuff the bags with groceries when I'm paying for each bag they are giving me. If I am paying for the bags shit bag my groceries correctly. WTF! I live in the suburbs and I rather pay a little more for the things I get here then to ever give these people anymore busy! read more

I'm with my wife yesterday when we came here and we bought groceries for our whole month. So I grabbed some carts and we started to grab them. We first went to the products for our comfort room and for the kitchen. We purchased shampoo, soap, toothpaste, hand liquid, dishwashing liquid, body wash and many more. After that we went to the other sections and we purchased cereal, pancake color, flour, cornstarch, coffee, milk, cookies, chocolate, egss, canned food and many more. Thb we went to the vegetable and fruit section. We bought apples, grapes, lemon, orange, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, green pepper, radish and many more. Lastly we went to the meat and seafood section and purchased chicken and shrimp. We would like to buy some pig meat but it was too pricey so we bought chicken instead. We needed ingredients and we bought them in this mall. First we bought toys and barbies. We bought a lot and gave us a discount and free when they knew that it was for charity. Next we buy ingredients of pasta and chicken. After buying pasta ingredients we went to the selection of chicken. After that we bought tupperware to put in the food. When I look at the selection it is full of products. They have many choices. The inventory was organized well but when some customers grab or pick some products in the inventory it became not organize. While she was choosing some soap I went to the selection of drinks. I bought cool drinks and paid at the counter. I drink it while I'm pushing the cart. We spent an hour in this grocery store and thanks G my mom is finished and she's so happy because she bought everything we need. She is also grateful because some products she bought were on sale, on discount and also there were freebies. She saved enough money. read more

I came in here last night to pick up some basics that I either can't get at the Co-op/Farmer's Market, or are too expensive there (ground beef for burritos, cooking spray, etc). I ended up getting so much stuff that I could barely get it all home on my bike - fortunately the trip is only about 4 blocks. Prices were spectacular, fruit clearly marked that it is from Mexico (for some reason I'd rather by Mexican fruit than American) and HUGE bags of beans/rice. The gentleman attending the carts even offered to help me figure out how to get it all on my bike - and offered me a milk crate! Great store, I'll definitely be back. Though next time, I want to make a list of all the vegetables/fruits I don't recognize so I can look them up. Oh! One more thing! They have frozen fruit pulp for smoothies! Yay! read more

All the things you can't find and where else in Chicago, PACKED into a modestly sized grocery store that feels like it fell out of my very-PR hometown of NYC. If you're cooking out of Valldejuli's Cocina Criolla to rediscover your roots like I am, this probably the one place in the whole city where you'll find everything you need. Just perfect. The non-Hispanic reviewers who give this place low stars because you can't buy generic American produce here--or who think this is a Mexican grocery--clearly have NO idea not only that this is a PR grocery, but that this is THE PR grocery. The people who are living in this neighborhood are very lucky to have a store like this one. I actually do not live near here and coincidentally stopped by this store to buy a few things. The store is really nice, it is clean and very organized. It is not really that big but it is full of every grocery item I could ask for. I do not go in here for the groceries but just for a few snacks and drinks that we could get but I cannot help myself to explore the store and see their amazing selection. Their produce is definitely what I like the most. It has a variety of different produce and everything is literally fresh and in a good quality. Take note, the prices are also reasonable and somehow cheaper compared to the store I usually go in based on my observation. They have staff inside but their staff is not the one who would greet you or anything even when I was in the checkout but they answered when I asked something. I seriously bought produce here even though I live miles away from the store and I did not buy the usual produce but instead I bought those few that are available in this store and not available in the store near my place. read more

Puerto Rican's and Dominican's Rejoice!!!!!! GREEN Plantains Goya Products Merengue & Salsa over the P.A. system. Just about everything that I lack in KC is found in this place. We literally bought $60 in groceries before going back home. Malta India, sazon Goya, and fried plantains. Things you Chicago folks take for granted I stocked up on like i was hunkering down for 3 weeks of Katrina. Plantains were amazing. Yuca was also extremely fresh. Usually I like this grocery store, but tonight I stopped in to pick up a gallon of milk on my way home from work at 8:45pm --15 minutes before closing according to their website and signs on the front door, and the man standing at the door told me they were closed and would not allow me in to buy a gallon of milk to feed my children breakfast the following morning. Could have sold me my gallon of milk and still easily been out on time as advertised. Extremely disappointing when a business does not honor their posted hours and turns away good business. I will go to one of the other local grocers next time I need an item or a a fridge full. read more

They have all the ingredients, which is great, but then they also have pre-made things like sofrito (don't tell my mother) and pasteles (don't tell her either - she wanted to pack up hers and send them on dry ice from Florida). I've been to Cermak produce, but they don't have certain things. Here, I found it all: Discos para empanadas, jamon cocinado, giant pernils, fresh gandules. Todos. I love this little local grocer. Honestly, I really do. Every time I need something quick for a party, I just walk about 3 blocks to Armitage Produce. This store is smaller than your average grocer, however it is very affordable, clean & everyone that works there is really friendly. If when I have a puzzled face, I get approached by a stock boy..."You need to find something miss?" Oh yes! I do! Thank you! The prices are great for the produce. In my neighborhood there aren't any major grocery stores so Armitage Produce is my best bet. They have a little bit of everything in a small space which is pretty impressive. The staff is super conscientious of the store and keep it stocked and clean. You can do your general shopping here and they have a decent beer and wine selection! holy cow was I surprised by this. My only complaints are: -i'd like to see some faux meat options like morningstar, boka, or even tofu -i'd like to see some nicer cheeses (besides basic mexican and american cheeses) -a lot of the brand name stuff (like cleaning supplies) are more expensive than regular grocery stores Overall I dig this place and feel fortunate to have this great business a block away. read more

This store doesn't have parsley THAT I COULD FIND. Apparently I'm blind. I assumed that a store with the word "produce" in the title would definitely have a good selection of herbs. I am just horrible for finding fresh dill, parsley, mint, and basil without paying $$$ for them. If you are one of those people who loves cilantro, then they got you covered!
