Just got done shopping at my favorite place in the world! Great prices, consistent excellent quality! This store has been a gem in the cornerstone in Roger Park for approx. 40 yrs. Always spotless, nice displays, top notch customer service. Very fresh produce! The owners take pride in seeing that each & every customer is taken care of. They take special orders & I've personally seen staff bend over backwards to ensure their customers are taken care of! I have shopped here for approx. 6 years ever since moving up to Rogers Park & am a loyal customer who appreciates & support small business. I get much better quality & service than in the chain stores! Quite an international market. Has just about everything, including foods from Africa which attracts African neighbors. Small clearance shelf for produce, though there aren't a lot of sales. There bread from Mexican, Russian and Caribbean bakeries. It always seems to be busy. I don't buy meat there yet customers seem to support that section. read more

This is a great market for Latin American and Caribbean food items that you can't find at traditional grocery stores. They have a butcher and lots of fresh produce, at good prices. It's amazing the variety of cultures that you'll come across shopping here. Several of my staple foods from childhood are found here and they carry Belizean hot sauce! read more

This is my go to place for fresh quality meat. I mostly purchase chicken wings which are reasonably priced when compared to other meat markets. I've never had an issue with quality or freshness. I've also purchase beef stew, taco meat, smoked beef sausage and beef short ribs... all great. The fruit and vegetable are also pretty although sometimes the prices are more than the Jewels a few blocks away, however quality is what matters most to me. The people there are friendly and helpful. The lines are never long... in and out. I think you will also be please with assortment of international food items. read more

It's easy to not really notice this place at first. There's a Jewel not far away, so the programming of going to Jewel made me forget to check it out. but.... I finally have and I think it's great. 1. The freshness alone, sells it. I didn't have to hurry up and eat the produce the next day. 2. So much variety. Produce that are "exotic" to me. It makes me want to buy things and look up the recipes after you get it home. 3. A woman was straight up eating a peach. Sometimes people pick off a grape to check the freshness and flavor. She was eating the peach and her friend calls her out on it. She goes, "I gotta taste it".... Just be cool. Don't eat the fruit. read more

For what it is and where it's at, Rogers Park Fruit Market gets a 5 star rating from me hands down. You can find a huge international selection of products from mostly the Caribbean, West Africa, Latin America and Asia. As a cook and 2nd generation Nigerian-American, I totally appreciate the wide variety of products that RPFM has and think that no other grocery store can compare to them in the area. The staff is helpful and friendly, the aisles are always clean, and the hours are fantastic. I highly recommend you shop here if you're in the area. Decent prices. I have never had any bad experiences with their meats but I only get their oxtails , goat meat and seasonings for that meat that's it. However I have heard that you should not buy ground beef or chicken from here so I don't!!! read more

This place has been going downhill since the last time I've visited there in June 2013. Yeah, I know it was awhile ago. Obviously it was enough time for them to deteriorate. I was in the area and wanted to grab some groceries before heading home. I suggested the Rogers Park Fruit Market to my hubby, even though we both sensed the "shadiness" in this part of town. The prices were inexpensive for most fresh veggies and fruit, but some of the items were slightly old-looking and have passed the fresh threshold. We were about to get some green peppers, but they were wrinkled and disgusting-looking. We picked out a eight (8)-lb. bag potatoes, some spinach, some spring mix, some red delicious apples, and a tray of tomatoes. For a little over $6, they were not that bad at all. They do take credit cards, but I doubt I will be there again. It's first time I will ever say this: maybe you should check out the Jewel nearby and compare the qualities of items between the two (2) locations. Remember, it takes courage for me to say that Jewel "may be" a better choice for groceries. Great neighborhood market with better fruits, veggies, and meats than the Jewel two blocks over and lots of Caribbean and West African stuff -- white corn, fufu, goat, etc -- that Jewel doesn't carry. We always go here first, then to Jewel to fill in the gaps. read more

Love this place for specific Caribbean/ African Finds. PRODUCTS: They have some pretty hard Caribbean finds, like bottles of Ting, canned ackee, canned Calaloo, etc. they also some some popular African foodstuffs, like pepper soup mix, and peanut butter stew stock. They've got a great selection of Indomie as well and a few different noodle types. They have some harder-to-find Asian food products as well, like pure MSG, Chinese style chili oil, etc. PRODUCE: Their produce section is very extensive and always looks stocked to the brim. They've got Bok Choy, a good selection of mushrooms, and plenty of herbs as well. I'm not sure if the place is POC owned or not, but I would imagine that it was as it caters to hard Hispanic, Latin, African, and Caribbean finds. OTHER: They also have black soap, and she's butter sold near the cash registers. CLEANLINESS: Everytime that I've been here, the floors and surfaces are very clean. I've seen other reviews state otherwise, but I've never had that problem. BOTTOM LINE: return frequently, would recommend, especially for my POC that can't always find the items from back home. read more

I live right down the street and always come here first for my groceries. I only go to Dominick's (conveniently located just a few steps north on Clark) for things the market doesn't carry. Excellent prices, top-quality produce - and the cherry on top is that it's a fun shopping experience. I truly enjoy getting groceries here, which is much more than I can say for the big boys, Dominick's and Jewel. read more

Love Love Love. Great produce selection, good prices. Nice variety of canned goods (not the usual stuff you'll find at big chains, lots of caribbean and latin american stuff). They don't always have every single thing I want, but who does? I haven't worked up the nerve to use the butcher counter at the back of the shop, but it's always busy. The customers reflect all aspects of the diverse RP neighborhood, and everyone seems welcome there. What I love best is that I can walk into this place with just the spare change in my pocket, and still afford enough produce to make a fresh meal at home. This place is an awesome part of the neighborhood, and I think lots of folks depend on this place to feed big families on a small budget. Extra bonus points: the check-out clerks are super fast and very friendly. If you're sick of standing in long, slow supermarket lines only to get "Chicago-style" customer service, this place is worth the trip. read more

I live around the corner from this place, so I go here quite a bit. The produce is 100 times better than the crap you find at Jewel or Dominick's and by going here, you're supporting a small local business instead of a stupid national corporation (I used to work at Jewel and it really is a big stupid corporation). If you're driving here, parking gets really really harry on the weekends, so if walking or biking is an option, that would be the wise choice. Best part about this place? You run into people who live in your neighborhood. It's small, so you're almost forced to interact with your neighbors, which really makes you feel like you're part of the community. You might want to even pause your Ipod and say "hi" to that dude who lives in your building. read more

If you live in RoPa (Rogers Park) then you need to shop here for your produce. WHY? 1. It will at least be somewhat fresher than Dominicks 2. It will be a lot cheaper than Dominicks 3. One of the (many) reasons I love Chicago is the abundance of small fruit, vegetable and meat markets like Rogers Park Fruit Market. Tons of cheap and fresh fruit, veggies, herbs, etc. at prices that are often half of what you'd pay at Dominick's or da Jewels. While it's a pretty tight little space they had everything I needed for my chili recipe. As is expected of these places the grocery 'convenience' items (dishsoap, etc.) are heavily marked up, but those are the things you should hit the big box markets for anyway. For anything perishable, this is the spot. Haven't tried any of their meats, but the selection looked great. Seeing that this is Chicago, parking is all paid, but your savings will negate the cost. They only lose a star for having sub-par guacamole. It jwas too smooth and just tasted a little 'off'. My wife and I were a little concerned that it retained its bright green color even several days after opening. I'll stick to the top-notch guac over at Morelia on Western, but would still come here for anything else. read more

Places like this are the reason that I love Rogers Park. We just relocated to the neighborhood, moving a whole .6 miles North. I was worried that Dominick's would be my only option. I cannot express how happy I am to have this just a few short blocks away. Great selection of fresh produce that is significantly cheaper than Dominick's or Jewel (and unlike those stores this is food you actually want to eat). I am reserving that elusive 5th star until I go a few more times. However, since I tend to shop daily, because I never know what I am going to cook until the mood strikes me, this shouldn't take long. read more

Great for produce and staples. Fresher and cheaper. Especially good for avocados, mangoes, and limes. Usually much shorter lines than dominicks. And the staff and other shoppers are really friendly. I can't even count the number of times I wasn't sure about a Caribbean or Mexican product and someone taught me something new. Good location too. Every kind of Mexican or Caribbean item I could want! My husband was enamored with the butcher shop selection. Why do I go here? - It's close - The produce is cheaper than Dominicks It's not AS nice as other Fruit Markets around the city and not AS cheap, but it serves us well in our community. You can find fruits and vegetables here that are harder to find in your local Dominicks or Jewel. It could be cleaner and the canned goods could be cheaper (go to Dominick's for those). read more

What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said? Perhaps... CHORIZO?!? Yes, they make their own chorizo. And because it is so very, very tasty, I buy it. At least twice a month. And chicken - FRESH DAILY, and about 1/2 the price of Dominick's/Jewel ! AND they'll cut it up for you any way you'd like. Their prices for fruit, vegetables, rice and meat are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the Dominick's half a block away (e.g. bananas: RPFM, 49¢ / lb. DOM, 99¢ / lb.). Staple items are fairly priced, but I do need to go to both places to get my whole list completed. The staff, especially the guys in the meat dept., are SUPER. HIGHLY recommended. read more

I used to shop here frequently and thought I would head over to compare it to MFM. Some items were much cheaper (Kale -- 1.29 a bunch vs. 1.99 as MFM), others moderately more pricey (ready to cook chicken fajita mix from the butcher 3.99 at RPFM vs. 2.99 at MFM). MFM is much cleaner than FPFM and the staff don't seem stoned. W/out a doubt, the guys back in the butcher shop were as high as ten hippies. They were older guys and were laughing about my request not to use the beef scooper thingy to scoop up the chicken. That's when I noticed the dude did not have those little plastic gloves on and had hairy knuckles. Normally, I don't much like my chicken with knuckle hairs -- so I passed. I did hold onto the kale. Cooked it today w/apple cider vin. and cumin. Yum. read more

Everybody has done a lovely job of singing this place's praises in broad strokes (I love egregiously mixing metaphors), so I'll just give a few examples of their varied offerings: You can choose between bags of beautiful, colorful dried corn kernels (yellow or deep red). They have a canned Irish moss/peanut drink in case you want to consume your daily requirement of saturated fat at one sitting. (It's probably GOOD but I'm too old for that kind of stuff!) I came home with a herring-mackerel-Scotch-bonnet pepper spread that I cannot wait to try. read more

I would LOVE to pretend I'm super high society and can buy fancy organic produce at Whole Foods. Actually, let's be real. Not only am I ok with not being able to buy everything at Whole Foods, I'm GLAD I can't! Roger's Park Fruit Market is AMAZING. The prices are fantastic and I can regularly buy a hand basket full of produce for $15-20. Not to mention, they have an amazing selection of hot sauces from all over the place! As much as I love this place, I will say, I'm giving it 4.75 stars as opposed to 5 because their guacamole needs some work. A great little produce place. While the selection isn't always the best, it is priced well and it'll be good quality. The meat counter is also not the best stocked but what they have, it's good quality and priced right. The pre-made taco meat is fantastic and perfect for home burrito or enchiladas. I used to think that nearby Dominick's would be the place to go if I needed a wide variety of things. But I cook a lot of ethnic (middle eastern, Hispanic, Asian, African) food. Invariably I would end up at this market. they always had everything i needed- at half the price of Dominick's. They might not have 45 different types of cereal or potato chips, but they will have all of the ingredients you need to cook a wonderful meal. Moreover, the staff is friendly and helpful. I cannot tell you how many times i have wandered around Dominick's looking for an employee to help me find a product (only to find that they don't have it.) In the R.P Fruit Market, the staff is EVERYWHERE and they are happy to help. read more

Kind of an amazing cultural experience for this Hawai'i girl used only to East Asian cuisine. What?!--inexpensive foodstuff from the Caribbean, Africa, Greece, India, etc.? In both raw and prepared forms of all kinds? Holy global grocery Batman! Things I saw which are hard to get at home-- Jamaican beef pies: Spicy, with a buttery orange-colored crust similar to that of filo dough but tougher and cracklier. Nicely formed in thin layers, it cracks and splits when you start to handle it. Got two for about $3.60, hot. Pork carnitas: Also behind the butcher's counter and also hot. Just enough for the evening meal, after we traveled from IL to IN. Went well with the sweet-potato crackers we bought at Kroger. If you speak Spanish or look Latino, they'll prolly give you a better cut. Not a bad thing, just how it is. Mexican cecina: From the butcher--this is like Italian speck, sliced super thin then air dried, except it's beef. (Sometimes pork?) I think it's lard, salt, pepper, and maybe oil put onto it when it dries. Then you go and add all kinds of spices/veggies to it. Sometimes it's spiced ahead of time and prepared that way. So fascinating: the trick is a specialist such as the butcher usually only has the expertise to cut it so thin. Tamarind everything: Candy. Drinks. Condiments. You name it: They gots it. Chicarrone de harina: We have the curly deep-fried, pork-fat snacks at home, but we don't have these pasta-like (pork) chicarrone in a prepared food bag. It's wheat and corn starch shaped wagon wheels which you deep fry, bringing out the taste of the pork fat that binds the wheels together. My hubs will get it as an omiyage (souvenir) of Chicago. Can't believe I've walked past this place for weeks to go to Dominick's. Way cheaper, the fruit and veggies are FRESH (haven't bought any meat yet), and the variety is incredible. A lot of the produce here I've never seen anywhere else. If you don't like cooking try somewhere else though, not much packaged food. This place used to be awesome. It was my go to for Carribean/African/Latino food. It still is for specific items like ackee, callaloo, yellow yam, plantains, chayote, etc...Unfortunately, the freshness of the food doesn't seem like what it used to be. Based on one experience I no longer buy fish or goat meat at this market. There are too many other choices (i.e. HMART in Niles, Lewis in Waukegan or several meat stores on the North side of Chicago on Devon) where there are more choices, better service, and higher quality everytime. read more
