I was looking to hire a tax professional to file my 2017 taxes and came across Armstrong via the Yelp "request a quote" feature. Normally I do taxes myself using TurboTax, but last year things got a bit complicated with me selling my first house in California after renting it out for a few years. The tax rules were quite complex for handling this so I decided to hire a professional this time. Armstrong was listed in San Ramon but he's actually based in Georgia! All of our communications were by email and things went smoothly. After scanning all my paperwork, Armstrong got back to me in a week with a thoroughly completed return. I liked how he handles my rental house conversion/sale - Armstrong looks very qualified since his website states he also has a real estate background! Highly recommend Armstrong for your tax needs, provided you're okay with doing everything by email. He does encrypt the forms for your records. His fees for service are reasonable but also transparent - they tend to increase the more complex your return (rental house sales, investments, AMT, etc.) He's technically no longer "local" but I am glad I found Armstrong. Surprisingly, many of the other CPAs listed in Yelp either ignored my inquiry, declined my business as they have too many clients, or declined to to give an initial estimate. read more

I highly recommend Armstrong Soo Tax Services. Please read below for my experience. I wanted to file the tax returns myself for 2018 and I almost completed all the paperwork but then I just realized that the new tax laws are much more complicated than I thought. I was not sure how to calculate mortgage interest deductions and property tax deductions. I was willing to take CPA consultation for these very specific and pointed questions and get them clarified and went to Yelp asking quotes for 30 min CPA consultation. As expected none of the CPAs agreed for a 30 min consultation and told me that they would charge minimum ($300 - $350) which is also the same cost you'd pay if you choose them to file your taxes. Few of the CPAs not even willing do such service or just ignored. Mr. Armstrong not just replied but offered his email id and asked me to send my questions to him and see if he can answer them in few exchanges and would not charge me for that. Even though it was pointed questions, it was complicated to explain in it email but I did sent him long email and was prepared to go to his office if he offers consultation at a reasonable price. But to my surprise, he responded with pointed answers and further provided some pointers to read. In a total of 3 emails back-and-forth he was able to resolve all my doubts at no fee. I was not looking for a free service but it shows this business is genuine and providing quality service but do not charge clients unnecessarily. I filed my tax with him for 2018 and when I got back to him for 2019, he came up with extra $200 fee to file additional two-page K1 form which is more than his regular fee for filing whole tax. I got some quotes from other tax professionals and their cost was $36. I got noticed by new tax professional that my tax by Armstrong was filed incorrectly with some dependents whereas I never had dependent under my name nor in any documents I shared with him! They also mentioned that I had charged with some penalty in a way my tax filed in 2019 but new company could refund me $180 since it happened once in my tax filing record. Armstrong is not available by phone and you must communicate only via email even if you need clarification or have some questions and this makes it inconvenience. read more
