    Indian brews...
    George H.

This is an absolutely great Indian/Hallal market. While a bit out of the way, it has everything that one might want. It's got fresh veggies, fruit, nuts, etc..., but it's also got a pretty decent frozen section and a solid Indian beer stock. The real winner here, though, is the amazing long grain/South Asian rice selection. Many Asian markets get stuck in the Korean/Japanese glutinous rice ordering patterns (that's good for many things), but sometimes jasmine is what you need. Fair prices, nice people, and a fun little stop.

A friend of mine, Noorul gets a lot of gratitude for steering me towards this, the largest and greatest of all Triangle Indian grocers. This is a Western-style Indian grocery that is HUGE and clean and very organized. Picture an Indian grocery with a footprint the size of a small "The Fresh Market" and you'll get the idea. This place is stocked with all different types of Indian delights. Driving along Hillsborough on the outskirts of Cary, it is easy to miss Around the World Market, because it is situated in a nondescript metal building strip mall on the right as you head towards Raleigh. My husband had not been in to this shop in quite a while and says that they have gone through a massive expansion, since he visited several years ago. The shop is deceptively large. From the outside, it looks like a small shop, but when you enter, you discover that it is very deep and the aisles go on and on and on. As you enter, you'll discover beautiful cases of hand made Indian sweets or mithai. To the right, you'll see a large section of Indian soaps, creams and medicinal products. I love the smell of the Mysore Sandal Soaps. As you walk further, you'll see a long rectangular frozen section with a lot of frozen Indian vegetables. Traditional American freezer cases line the walls and are filled with all sorts of frozen convenience meals, all types of Indian breads from all states, kulfi (ice cream) in mango, pistachio, cardamom and rose. There's even a pizza made from chapati for the western foray into Indian food. Pickles are a religion in India. They're also pretty political. This store has a pickle shrine- an entire aisle with all sorts of pickles- mango pickle, lemon pickle, date pickle, garlic pickle, you get the idea. There is a massive aisle of our favorite snacks- jackfruit chips, mixtures from each state- Kerala mixture, Hyderabadi mixture, Madras mixture, etc. There are banana chips (this is what brought us into Around the World Market today- Triangle Indian Market was out of them), all types of biscuits and papadum, candy and sweets. The vegetable section is glorious. Ecstasy. Everything is in perfect condition. There is a lot of space and variety. Today I saw vegetables that I've never seen in other Indian markets. All vegetables appeared to be of the best quality and in good stock. I recently ran into a ginger shortage at one grocer and a plantain shortage at another. This place has banana flowers, banana leaves, every gourd and bean imaginable. The prices are comparable to all of the other Indian grocers in the area. I appreciate the fact that Around the World is well stocked and does not appear to face many of the inventory challenges that other local Indian grocers do. I love that with so many of the foods we buy under one roof, we may not have to make multiple stops. I don't think they have our rice, but perhaps they will order it. Fantastic discovery! Thanks Noorul!

Unfriendly and unkind! I will not be going here anymore. They do not know what customer service is at all and are mean about it too.

Way over due…read more I never realized how lucky we are in Raleigh to have so many good Arabic bakeries until I tried looking for them in bigger cities (Atlanta, Philly, D.C.) that are apparently completely bereft of good Arabic groceries. Jerusalem Bakery & Grocery has most of what you need for cooking Arabic food I will say flat out its the best pita bread on the east coast. When i visited other cities family there would ask me to bring pita bread when I came. The meat, cheese and spinach pies are fantastic. The cheese pies are my personal favorites. The family that owns this place is really nice, and will be even more pleased and solicitous if you show a genuine appreciation for their food. Oh, and they have a dessert that I can never remember the name of, but which is also wonderful and difficult to find - it's the one made of filo dough with cheese inside and attar (the sweet sticky sauce) on top. I have yet to see it anywhere else in the U.S, and they do a good job of it. Like many bakeries, they bake early in the morning and sell until its gone. So best selection and quantity is going to be in the mornings. For the visit on Jan 7, 2025, I got 3 meat pies, 12 cheese pies, 4 pita bread bags, and 1 sesame date cookie package which is also a favorite of mine. Total $51.14. An important pro tip is that the pies and pita bread all freeze great. so go ahead and eat 1 pie while its warm, because it likely will be, and then quickly freeze the rest. Then, warm it up in a toaster oven.

It's very close to the state farmer's market, which makes it convenient for me…read more To tell you the truth, I was a little disappointed at the size of the produce area. The produce looked fine but it doesn't compare to H Mart's produce area as far as variety and size. But H Mart is in Cary and if that is not convenient for you, this will work just fine. I'm a flour tortilla girl and they looked a lot like the fresh tortillas I had in Texas. The tortilla section consisted of corn, but they had plenty of flour and some cactus. (Update: Ok, I am NOT claiming to be an authority on flour tortillas by any means. But having lived in Austin for over 20 years and having near-unlimited access to HEB's house brand tortillas when they are so fresh the package is almost too hot to hold, I'm not a tortilla newb, either. I have to say - and I am almost embarrassed to say this - I liked Trader Joe's flour tortillas a lot more than these. TJ's reminded me of HEB's. These tortillas got stiff when I heated them in my cast iron skillet.) Large section of dried beans. Some of it surprisingly expensive, but as I said, they have a large selection so they had reasonably priced ones too, nearly an entire aisle of them. What I was drawn to was their selection of sodas (or "fun drinks", as we call them in my house because I am a mean mom who doesn't let my kid drink soda). Of course they had Mexican Coke and Jarritos, and they also had banana and grapefruit sodas, which I had never seen before. And they also had Topo Chico, which I haven't been able to find since moving to NC from Texas! Only mineral water, no lime. I love their cheese section - I wish I had taken pictures. I saw Salvadorean and Honduran cheeses and cream, which I would love to try in the future. I don't live that close but am willing to put this in my regular rotation, especially if no other grocery near me carries Topo Chico.
