My husband's physical therapist recommended this place and we were wonderfully pleased with the food and service. This is a takeout counter inside of an ethnic grocery store. I have never been to India, but if I had, I believe that I can say this food here is very authentic. They do not skimp on the spices and flavor as some other places do. I ordered a few samosas, chicken 65 (very spicy) over a bed of basmati rice, and butter chicken. Portions were great! This was accompanied by a white yogurt sauce that mellowed out the heat and spicy notes of the food. Service was great! Each member showed eagerness to get the order right and to pack it up to go. Stopped in while traveling through town to shop and eat some food. The market has a wide variety of items you can buy from spices and canned goods, to frozen meats, cheese, and snacks. The restaurant portion has all of the menu items listed with the prices for easy ordering. We ordered the chicken biryani, butter chicken, and a few desserts from the check out counter as well as a few miscellaneous grocery items. The chicken biryani was a fan favorite with the chicken melting in our mouths and falling off the bone. The butter chicken was good but definitely don't recommend for car eating - we learned that the hard way and had quite a bit of spillage! The desserts at the front were not our cup of tea but we were glad we tried them regardless. read more

I agree with Jane below that this place is definitely A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH! It's difficult finding the variety of Middle Eastern groceries that are available here anywhere else in the Triangle! Case in point: went to 5 different stores looking for a specific kind of dates. Most places only had 1-2 types, but there was a large shelf here with 10+ types to pick from! I was impressed by all the spices and quick mixes they had of common dishes like falafel. They also have a bakery with fresh bread including fresh date bread which I haven't had outside of the Middle East! So delicious. They also carry fresh meat, and have lots of frozen meals including Turkish flatbreads. This is also the only place around I think that will have a variety of frozen knafeh/kunefe to pick from - which if you haven't had yet, you're missing out. Best dessert ever. There's a takeout restaurant, Biryani Factory, within the market, that I have yet to try! You can call ahead - see the pictures of the cards I uploaded with phone numbers! read more

Craving for good Birayani, missed an exit and saw this name. Walked in, wow what a flavor of Basamati rice and masala's with chicken and goat meat. Than I meet the awesome person to talk to, Arif bhai.... he treated me and other customers so respectfully and gave us samples. Ok, if any Asian restaurant's can give you a sample, they are very confident of their quality of food. And, i will not buy Birayani, sitting their for sometime. I love this store. Nice people, and a GREAT selection of Middle Eastern groceries. If you love different grains, this is the place to get them. Feta and nabulsi cheeses? Here. Every type/weight of phyllo dough you could need? Right here. Great halvah? Here. A great selection of breads from local sources (my favorite is the samoon which I'm thinking comes from Baghdad Bakery). But my favorite has to be the bulk biscuits that they keep moving around but are worth tracking down. So good with coffee. And yeah, they have a great coffee selection too. The notice says they are open till 10 but you can show up at 8.15, and they are out of everything except some kind of old tasting butter chicken and biryani, that would be just biryani rice, not any full pieces of chicken. Yesterday I ordered one chicken biryani which came with 8 pieces of bone, and one single leg for $10, which has to be the most ridiculously small portion of meat possible in an entree. The people behind the counter are very nice, but only order the biryani at your own peril, the rice is delicious, the meat is non existent, and they will charge you full price, with no shame at all, for a pile of bones. read more

Mama says the smell fills the entire store! If you truly love Mediterranean food, you'll really like it here. Mind you, they didn't have half the menu. But the chicken 65 biryani is amazing! They'll even give you a free sample. On to the market, the market has so many interesting and unique to the culture items. I did quite a bit of shopping, especially in the spice section. I also got some fresh goat meat from the butcher. So, the butcher section has a B food safety grade... enter at your own risk. Since I've eaten food in third world countries off the side of the road... it didn't scare me at all. The 5 stars is there because I got all I needed in one place to make my hubby goat pepper stew! A Mediterranean supermarket with Turkish, Arabic, Greek, etc. goods along with fresh halal meats and even a small area where you can get prepared food to go, Almadina is a nice store. Compared with some other markets like it, Almadina's is very clean and well stocked with a variety of things you may not expect. They have items such as azan clocks and prayer rugs and other non-food items that make it more of a supermarket than a grocery store. In the back of the store, after you've perused the dry goods, you can find fresh and frozen food and spices. A couple of times I've stopped in, though, it must have been in-between deliveries since they were pretty sparse on the fresh food, but otherwise they seem to have most things you'd expect to find. On those visits where I've had need of some help, the employees have been polite and seem very proud of their store. I think that speaks volumes. And when you've made it through your shopping list here, you can go next door to the Almadina bakery for some dessert and coffee. How perfect a set up is that? read more

ATTENTION YELPERS. THIS IS A FRICKING DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. And by rough, I mean it's next to a subway and cook-out. Rough. I pass by this place everyday and I just now have decided to stop to check it out. UGHHHH, why didn't have that motivation months ago?! Biggest regret of my LIFE!!! You absolutely have to come here for the cafe. They serve schwarmas (beef and chicken), kabobs (beef, chicken, lamb, veggie, kofta), falafels (or in a sandwich), hummas, tabouli, baba ganouj and a few other things. Those are the main menu items. As the pig that I am, I got a little bit of each. I got a regular schwarma with chicken and beef ($3.99), it was not your usually meat in a pita pocket. It was like a pita bread wrap, and a regular was very satisfying. Truth be told, I ate in the dark so I am only tell you what I tasted. The meat was plentiful and well flavoured. The tziki (sp?) sauce was your thick greek yogurt like, so it wasn't runny and it was garlicky (YUM!). The med pickles were also well distributed, I had it in every bite. Each kabob is $3.99. They are all the same price regardless of what meat you get. Yes, ladies and gentleman. A lamb kabob is the same price is a kofta or veggie kabob. The kabob's big, MUCH bigger than neomonde's kabobs. Each kabob had 5 big cubes. I got two chickens because they ran out of beef and lamb. The chicken came with a pita bread and the garlic tziki sauce. The chicken was marinated in yogurt and has that pinkish hue that you'd find in some med places. It was delicious. So well grilled, and flavoured. Needless to say, juicy. I usually don't like falafels, but I got 3 pieces for $1.49 and I don't regret it at all. I don't know how to describe it, but it wasn't dry and the falafel spices were just right. Also, it wasn't fried so much that it was like a piece of rock. Dip that in some garlic yogurt sauce and you can call heaven to tell them you are ready. The baba ganouj..i'm a baba ganouj snob and the only place I've found good baba ganouj is neomonde. This place beats neomond anyday. It's $2.99 for a regular, which is your typical hummus container size. The eggplant has a roasted tasty, mixed with raw olive oil and garlic. OKAY onto the butcher section. They have chicken, beef, goat and lamb for really great prices. $9.99/lb for filet mignon. YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT! They also have pidgeon, rabbit, and duck. Also lamb brain. It's also a pretty decent sized Mediterranean grocery store with a lot of great varieties and a medium selection of fresh produce. I really think I found a gem. read more

Do not be fooled by the outside appearance. Yes, it is a grocery store but this review is about the little grill area... I have driven by this place dozens of times and never caught my attention; however, today I really wanted a falafel sandwich. Went on YELP & decided to give them a try based on the reviews... I'm a little picky with what goes on my sandwich, the man behind the counter was very helpful and accommodating.. While my food was bng prepared (which didn't take long at all) I was able to browse the store, picked up some turmeric... The drive back to work was torture because the food smelled so good!! The falafel was crispy on the outside and nice and moist in the inside, not dry at all!! The pita the same!! I got a small side of humus and ended up dipping my fries in the remaining hummus because it was so delish!!! Anywhooo, my point is, if you're looking for a flashy restaurant w mediocre food, this might not be the spot for you; BUT if you want a delicious, budget friendly, pickup & go lunch that will satisfy, then this is it!!! I was very excited to swing by Almadina to pick up some halal meat for dinner the other night! The store was stocked well and had a huge array of halal meats but the SERVICE sucked. I was standing there for 10 minutes without a single person asking me what I needed. Then after I put in my order additional customers came in and the people behind the counter stopped working on my order and tended to them. I was frustrated and left! Two people behind the counter and it should not take 15 minutes for a small order. Sorry but I'm not visiting this place again. read more

Oooooh this is a place of nightmares and foodbourne illness....When you walk in the door you will get a bizarre look from the woman at the cash register. The sudden smell of sweat and rotting meat hits you immediately. There are flies everywhere. The lack of air conditioning makes you feel like you are roasting. The smell of meat going foul penetrates every layer of your being. In my quest for a budget friendly meat market I fear that I strayed too far off the beaten path. Chicken laying right next to beef laying right next to lamb with no separation whatsoever and all the blood pooling in the bottom of the left-open case as flies swarm to the rotting flesh. I'm from NC but am currently working in the Middle East. Here for the summer, I was surprised to find that after my taste for biscuits and BBQ had been sated, I wanted some of the clean flavors of a Turkish mixed grill. I stumbled across this place yesterday and was not disappointed. I stocked up on some staples like halloumi, labneh, za'atar, hummus, and baba ganoush. Then I went to the restaurant counter and ordered some chicken shawarma, mixed grill, fattoush, and falafel for take away. The take away exceeded my expectations. It was really close to some of my favorite places in Qatar and Egypt. The lamb and chicken skewers in the mixed grill were particularly tender and juicy, and had that "charred but not overcooked" flavor I have come to love in good Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food. The falafel were literally some of the best I've had, and believe me I've eaten some falafel. The baba ganoush was smoky and creamy, and reminded me of the Persian versions of the dish I've had. I've seen some critical reviews here (it's hot, it's not clean), and I encourage you to look past them. This is a cultural gem in Raleigh. It's not another frickin' Harris Teeter. Absolutely delicious and great prices! The food in their little cafe section (no seating, mind you) is amazing. Large portions for great prices. The only negative thing I can say is that it takes a while for your food to be prepared, so don't go if you're in a hurry. If you've got 10 or 15 minutes then you won't be sorry! I haven't done much shopping in the supermarket section, but I can tell you that they've got great prices for large jars of tahini and cans of stuffed grape leaves. I've been coming here for years whenever I'm in town and need to replenish my spices. They have great deals on bulk ground spices and some whole spices like green cardomom. I haven't ordered from the restaurant other than once or twice and wasn't that impressed. The staff aren't the friendliest to people they don't know. It doesn't bother me as much cause I try to grab what I need and get out anyway. read more
