The place is gorgeous, but as a person with high expectations for Mexican food I can't help but call out that my meal and cocktail were average. I had two fish tacos and nothing stood out, besides the fresh tortilla which I loved! For my cocktail, I had the cantarito which I've learned to enjoy and prepare a lot from my recent trip to Tequila, MX that unfortunately didn't hit the mark for me. I think it was missing more of fresh grapefruit / orange juice. I appreciated the service that we were given. The gentleman was very attentive and communicative throughout our time at the place. The place though beautiful, I wondered if they were having a slow night because there weren't many people out and about at the outside bar / seating and it felt a bit on the quiet side. And when we were there and it was a weekend night! Overall the experience was okay, but the food or ambiance didn't knock me out of my feet enough to come back. read more

Really enjoyed my experience at arriba abajo! I came on a Saturday evening just after thanksgiving, and there were plenty of empty tables so we had no trouble getting a res, and no wait. We ordered prickly pear margaritas which were lovely, and fairly decent sized so the price point isn't bad. We ordered the corn appetizer, and a combination of carnitas and mushroom tacos (each plate comes with two). The tacos were very flavorful and fun, esp with the corn! We didn't even bother with the add on beans and rice because we were plenty full after drinks and this amount of food. Our server who I believe was named Janelle was absolutely lovely - she was so helpful, kind, and checked in often. The ambiance of the restaurant is also lovely, it's spacious inside and outside, with a low light vibe, so good for a date.I think sometimes they have a DJ, but they didn't the night we came. They did have the UT game streaming on a projector screen at the outside bar too. Overall really happy with the experience here, would definitely go back any time! read more

Celebrated a close friend's birthday dinner a few weeks ago and our server was great! We were treated to delicious Mexican Candy shots to kickoff the celebration. This review is solely based on cocktails and ambiance. It's a vibey indoor/outdoor spot inside of the Thompson Hotel. There are lounges outside that are quite popular near the pool and a large bar inside. The Halloween party we attended was a lot of fun! The cocktails were tasty, especially the passionfruit margarita, and they even found us a lounge for our group outside when they all seemed to be reserved for the night. Service was fairly quick and the DJ during the party played great music. I'm sure we'll be back with friends! read more

Only giving 2 stars because the staff was amazing and the vibes of the whole place was excellent. The food was lacking. Ordered the ceviche and it tasted like tomato sauce with a little shrimp and cucumber in it. My husband ordered the salmon Al pastor, which was cooked very well but the plate lacked any other sides. I had carnitas tacos, the carnitas was mediocre at best and lacked salt. The tortillas it was served with was god awful. For drinks I had a cantaritos and the frozen abajo. First of all you MUST use the street entrance as we were greeted happily by the attendant and entered an elevator to the fourth that opened to a paradisiac bohemian Aztec Jungle (don't judge me, you'll see) the music is low and really helps you escape everything around you. Seating on the patio is cozy and intimate for your own experience. The bar is lively and appealing some with closed captioned TV. We sat inside and enjoyed the love DJ on a Friday night. Emanuel was our server and gave great tasty suggestions and pairings. Normandie provided a helpful mood light and other suggestions to help keep the evening lively. We ordered the queso with mushrooms and chorizo on the side(one person doesn't like mushrooms), Cesar salad, lobster quesadilla pizza(it's fresh jalapeño SPICY), esquite (has a nice crunch), carne asada fajitas (lots of flavor). Visited on a Friday night at 7p with friends without a reservation. We were seated promptly. After doing some research online, we thought they had a reverse happy hour from 7-9p, but looks like they no longer have that. It's a lively ambiance with music playing, but a bit too dark in the actual restaurants, we were close to needing to use the flashlights on our phones for the menu lol. I ordered the PANELA PANZANELLA, but added salmon for the protein: Heirloom tomato, avocado, cucumber, grilled panella cheese, epazote dressing 6/10 Salmon was cooked nicely, but the salad itself was super overdressed. It was almost mushy so I could not finish it. The tomatoes were also a bit too soft for my taste, did not seem very fresh. Uptempo Latino music in the background. Seated right away, server was friendly and attentive throughout. Started with the chipotle Caesar salad. Don't let the word 'chipotle' scare you away. It's not spicy at all. Dressing is very light, and mild. Salad overall is light and refreshing. Even though it's an appetizer, got the Rock Shrimp as the main. **You Must Try This Dish!!!** Served over a bed of lettuce, the Rock Shrimp has two aiolis over it. First is an orange reddish aioli which packs a low-medium kick. Then a cilantro lime aioli for balance, adding citrus acidity to the shrimp. This is an absolute A+ winner of a dish. You will be **very** pleased! Finished the meal off with the Churro Ice Cream. The caramel has some Mezcal (liquor) in it. Depending on the bite you can occasionally taste it. Soft ice cream, caramel and chocolate syrups, two churros. Nice way to cap it off. Enjoyed this meal. Left satisfied and pleased. Thumbs up, would def return. read more

Came here for brunch on Sunday. Food itself was fine though 100% expensive for what it is, irrespective of their downtown/hotel location. We also got a few cocktails and they were fine. Food took a long time to come out, and we ordered some apps that ended up coming out with our mains, which was disappointing. The worst part of our experience was checking in/getting seated. We took the elevator up to Arriba Abajo from the street and entered via the outdoor patio. After navigating inside, we walked around the entire restaurant and couldn't find the check-in/host stand. We politely asked a staff member for help, and she walked away stating she doesn't speak English. After looping the entire restaurant twice, we finally found host stand, which was unattended (probably why we couldn't find it). As we stood there waiting to be helped, a staff member walked by, saw us and another party waiting, and walked away. Finally, a staff member came and started helping the larger group first, despite the fact that we clearly arrived ahead. We continued to wait patiently, and after finally checking in, despite the restaurant being at least 50% empty, we were asked to sit on a couch and wait for our table. We sat and waited for 10 min (6 min past our reservation time) before we were finally brought to our table, which was LITERALLY the table RIGHT NEXT to the couch that was empty the entire time. The staff member didn't apologize or thank us for waiting and honestly seemed annoyed she had to help us at all. Also, when we were finally brought to our table, the table wasn't set (no menus, utensils, etc.) so I have no idea what we were waiting for. The decorations are definitely a vibe and the interior is pretty, but based on service, I won't be back. read more

Felt like we were at a Caribbean island bar and not Austin. Bartender was friendly. The food, however, was just ok. We ordered carne asada tacos and barbacoa taquitos. The meat were dry in both and a bit flavorless. The pickled onions were great though and after stuffing that in the carne asada tacos and drenching it with the salsa verde, it was bearable and decent. I'd give the service and ambiance a 4, but only a 2.5 for the 2 food items we tried, very mediocre. 3 star overall based off of our limited experience. read more
