We celebrated my wife's birthday and once again, Arroyo Chop House did not disappoint. I apologize for no photos but we were just happy to enjoy our meal. For starters, we had a dozen oysters; fresh and tasty. I had the Wagyu Ribeye cooked to perfection; my wife had the Australian lobster tail. Judging by the empty plate, I would say she enjoyed it. This review is unfair. It is unfair because I've admittedly been spoiled by my prior steakhouse dining experiences at places like Keens and Peter Luger in NYC, Bern's in Tampa, Gibsons in Chicago, and my favorite option in Los Angeles: CUT by Wolfgang Puck. So, I have reasonable expectations for a good steakhouse. That being said, I was in the Pasadena area craving a steak and didn't feel like driving out west to CUT. So I decided to take a chance on a more local offering. Stopped by Arroyo Chop House shortly after they opened at 5pm. One of the three hostesses told me I could dine at the bar. I responded with some skepticism because I can't recall having been asked to eat at the bar at a reputable steakhouse in perhaps a decade. I do remember that bar and grills and sports bars like Chili's ask you to eat at the bar, but an above-average steakhouse? Ok. Despite my misgivings, I'll do as the locals do and give it a try. I sat at the bar wondering how the dishes I would order would fit. I typically order 1 or 2 appetizers, a salad, a soup, a bone-in ribeye or tomahawk, and 2-3 side dishes. Along with bread service, a cocktail, and a nice bottle of wine, I was hard pressed to imagine how that would all fit in the sparse elbow room available with bar seating. After sitting at the bar, I waited 5 minutes before a bartender asked me what I wanted. I asked for a dinner menu, and then waited another 5 minutes before the busy bartender asked another server to hand me a dinner menu. I began browsing the dinner menu and about a minute later, another server approached the bar from behind my shoulder, laid a tray on top of my menu, covering the menu, and proceeded to place an order for drinks from the bartender. Unable to read the menu, that was the last straw for me. I walked out without ordering anything and decided to check out the other nearby steakhouse that seemed appealing: The Royce at the Langham Hotel. I really wanted to give Arroyo Chop House a serious chance. I really did. But perhaps I've become unfairly accustomed to a high standard of not only steak and accompaniments, but also SERVICE, to which my brief time at Arroyo simply did not live up. The Arroyo seems to be a local favorite and maybe the steak is worthwhile. I wouldn't know. But for my personal tastes for steakhouse service and ambience, the Arroyo falls well below the bar (ha!) and didn't even give me an opportunity to evaluate their steak. Overall this restaurant felt more on par with Chili's and TGIF, which are great places to eat depending on your mood and cravings, rather than anything resembling a truly high quality steakhouse. read more

We visited this restaurant on a Friday night with reservations expecting the place to be very busy. Total 6 in our party, to celebrate a birthday. Service was good and drinks were well made, overall the place wasn't busy. It was maybe about 50% full. I give this place 3 stars because the food wasn't anything to leave an impression. I had a $63 New York steak and honestly my home made NY steak tastes better. I asked for medium, it was made medium well to well done. Meat was hard and had no real taste or seasoning. All the sides are separate and cost 15-20 each but big enough to share. Spending ~$300 (incl. tax & tip) for 2 people for a simple steak dinner with 2 drinks, you just expect more. First visit: This place nabbed us with the Dine LA offer. We were blown away by the service, the atmosphere, and most importantly, the FOOD! We started off with the oysters, but I don't remember anything too special about them, I would stick to other seafood. You have to try their bread. I'm sure their menu bread is great, but we were completely happy with their complimentary sourdough bread. Crunchy outside, soft inside, perfect for sopping up anything on your steak plate! But what made us come back was the steak and the dessert. Best filet I've ever had! Couldn't believe the combo of the flavor, tenderness and how perfectly it was cooked. And the soufflé is incredible and worth the wait! If possible, you must save room for dessert. Wonderfully satisfying and light. Love how they serve it with cold whipped cream. I tried both the Grand Marinier and the chocolate one, and though both were good, I preferred the chocolate. Make sure to order ahead of time! It needs about 35-40 minutes! I was also impressed by the attentiveness of the waiters despite the heavy DineLA crowds. I had multiple dreams of returning. It was inevitable. Second visit: We decided to return the day after Thanksgiving to celebrate an anniversary dinner. In true ACH fashion, they were already decked out for the holidays. We arrived at our table with a thoughtful touch of flowers and a handwritten note congratulating us on our anniversary- how sweet of them! They also comped our dessert, so of course, another souffle was in order :) Couldn't be happier with their service and kindness for our anniversary. This visit we enjoyed a nice Malbec with our meal :) We ordered the mixed cauliflower. I know in a steakhouse you basically HAVE to order a potato dish on the side, but we were too potato'ed out. The cauliflower was a wonderful light alternative to the more common potato. Loved how they used different colors of cauliflower and the light sauté. I like that they didn't overseason- the steak has enough flavor as is! Second visit we tried the Wagyu filet mignon and the cowboy ribeye. Wow! You seriously cannot go wrong when you order the steak here. The wagyu is out of this world. A completely different level. And the amount of marbled fat in the ribeye is perfect. Plus, if you have a dog at home, take home the bone to give a special treat to your fur baby :) This place will always have a special place in our hearts. Wonderful food, outstanding service, and walking distance from our house. Can't wait for another excuse to come back. read more

I'm trying to figure out whether it is common courtesy for a birthday celebration to have a complimentary dessert or is it now dead? GREAT SERVICE..... but ridiculously expensive and overpriced! This would be a 1 star if it weren't for the service we had. I can justify $120 "a la carte" dinner if I am in NYC, rooftop in DTLA or in Malibu on the beach... but this Arroyo is in a blah area of Pasadena. Nothing about this place says $120 a plate is a reasonable price. Their prices on whiskey were also overpriced. I have never seen Buffalo Trace (a good $21 bottle) at $14 a pour. Larceny ($19 bottle) at $13 a pour. Noah's Mill is a tasty bourbon but no way does it warrant $45 a pour when it is not an allocated bourbon and a bottle is $55.... Whoever set these prices must have thought they were offering up some hard to find allocations. I wish I remembered our waiter (tall gentleman from Chihuahua, Mexico) and his counterpart (shorter gentleman from Zacatecas, Mexico) names so I could praise their service and conversations. For it weren't for them- this would be a 1 star rating. If the prices were justifiable (totally out of the control of employees) this would have been a 5 star review based on their service. read more

We went to celebrate Father's Day at Arroyo and Brent was the Best waiter we've ever had hands down! He always made us feel so happy and comfortable asking for his service and whatever we needed for our Father's Day celebration! He's absolutely so refreshing compared to many other waiters or waitresses that make many people feel uncomfortable asking for one more dish or one more bowl or just anything. You're almost afraid to ask because you don't want a bad evening because you over ask and they may be upset for the one extra napkin that you may need. Our favorite steakhouse in the area, and there's quite a few good ones! The Chophouse is a classic old school steakhouse that the Rat Pack would have eaten at. Great menu with everything you expect to find. The only place in town that also has a butterscotch pudding this good. I've had the filet, the porterhouse and ribeye in the past and they're all fantastic, depending what mood you're in. The sweet corn is an awesome side, as are their mashed potatoes, Au gratin potatoes and the mushroom medley. You can't go wrong eating here. They have a valet lot or you can usually find street parking nearby fairly easily. read more

Quite a disappointment. I had been given rave reviews from a friend and when we visited for his birthday I ordered a new York (med rare). Upon arrival, it was over by a large margin (med well- well done). I don't usually send back food but in this instance when you're spending this much on a steak you'd expect a good cook. Upon receiving the new steak it was completely raw and cold on the inside, not even rare. I don't know if it was to spite my sending it back but it was absolutely inedible. I just accepted the steak and planned to take it home and cook the rest of the way. This also happened to a friend at the same table with his ribeye. The service is bringing this up a star as the individual taking care of our table was very sympathetic and attempted his best to make it right. read more

My lovely boyfriend took me here to celebrate my 28th birthday last Saturday, and i was completely blown away by the food and service. As we were taken to our seats, I was greeted with fresh flowers and a birthday card from the restaurant. It was so sweet of them. :) I ordered a tasty grey goose cocktail that had a star anise and juicy slice of pear. The drink was strong and very tasty. We started the meal with fresh sourdough and garlic bread. The bread was piping hot and so good, I could've ate the whole basket on my own. For appetizers we ordered jumbo cocktail shrimps, and a burrata argula salad w/ truffle vinaigrette. Both of the appetizers were amazing, I highly recommend both. For steak we shared the cowboy ribeye, and we picked cream spinach and lobster mashed potato for sides. We've been to many steak restaurants in LA, and my bf and I both think arroyo has the best steak and sides. The steak was HUGE, but perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was juicy and very flavorful. The sides were also huge, and paired perfectly with the steak. By the end of our meal, we're were stuffed. We asked for the bill, and was surprised with a small cupcake. It didn't look impressive, but it tasted amazing! I'm already planning to take my bf here for our anniversary in a couple months. Job well done, arroyo chop house. :) read more

Food was delicious! Environment was great. Service was great, BUT there's a catch. Some waiters there are being dishonest, and stealing peoples card information to create fraud. I must not be the first person to experience this here, but I must be one of the few to catch it. I look at my accounts, but the waiters that are participating in this fraud must know that most people dining here are well off, and will not bother to check their accounts to see that someone is stealing their card information upon payment. The atmosphere was great and the scalloped potatoes were memorable, but the steaks were thin, overcooked and under seasoned. We tried the filet, and thought we'd splurge on the wagyu New York and ribeye. Honestly, the $95 steak tasted like something from Vons. On the positive side our cocktails were good, the server was great and the soufflé was delicious. But overall it was overpriced for such mediocre steaks.
