The Lucky Tiki in Highland Park is the sister location of the original Lucky Tiki in West Hollywood. This spot opened about a year ago, and has a cool speakeasy style entrance at the Highland Park Bowl bowling alley. It is a small space, and I would highly recommend making a reservation on Resy. You have 90 minutes to drink and dine. I parked behind the bowling alley where there is a medium sized pay parking lot. Park in a space, remember your space number painted on the ground, and go to the pay station at the end of the lot. I found the parking machine to be extremely finicky as did other people. After ten minutes of failure, I ended up moving my car to another space, and then it worked. This has nothing to do with the Lucky Tiki, but FYI if you park there. We walked around to the front of the bowling alley, and checked in. Seating options include at the bar, tiki hut booths, and high top tables. The décor inside is a tiki lovers paradise. The room has a high ceiling with many tiki lamps, floats, puffer fish, tiki huts, thatch, ropes, barrels, netting, carvings, a hanging canoe, and a large tiki right in the middle of the space. In addition to the great décor, when you order certain drinks, special effects are triggered. There was also great tiki music playing all evening. We sat at the bar since we always enjoy talking to the bartenders. We actually ran into Skipper Christian in the parking lot on the way in, and he ended up being our main bartender, with Nick and Jo also working behind the bar. We put in a food order right away. The chicken potstickers ($12) came with five tasty bites, and the garlic teriyaki dipping sauce was good. We also had the giant pretzel ($16) which comes with mustard, beer cheese, and ranch sauces. This was excellent, and the perfect filling snack before a bunch of drinks. My first drink was the Siren's Song (Flor de Cana Eco rum, lemon juice, cassis, Oloroso sherry, apricot foam topper, $19). This drink is served in a great mermaid with skull mug and triggers special sound effects and bubbles fill the air. Those bubbles on top of the drink had a great light citrusy apricot flavor, probably the best flavored bubbles I've ever had. The drink itself was very good and balanced with some complexity. She wasn't sure what to order at first, and Christian asked her what flavors she liked. He ended up making a spin on a Tradewinds with some mango and pineapple to go along with the apricot and coconut. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet, even with all that fruit in there. My second drink was the Sun of Suns (Tierra de Acre mezcal, coconut cream, Giffard mango liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, $17). This was coconut and pineapple forward with some good smokiness in the background. Her second drink was the Whatever Floats Your Boat (Ford's gin, lemon juice, velvet falernum, orgeat, passion fruit syrup, guava soda, topped with hazelnut passion fruit foam, $19). It is served in a cool boat mug, and triggers thunder sound effects and lighted mechanical Polynesian tiki characters paddling a canoe over the bar. This was another good balanced drink. It was a little gin forward and the passion fruit popped out, maybe from being both in the drink and the foam top. That creamy hazelnut passion fruit form on top is delicious. I'd happily have a glass of that on its own. We were still a little hungry so we ordered the Hawaiian pizza (marinara, diced pepperoni, red onion, pineapple chunks, hot capicola ham, $16). It was another good tasting, perfectly sized snack, and the crust was light and airy. We were already fifteen minutes over our time limit, but we got the green light to stay longer to order a third drink to share. We ordered the Tiki Diablo (Flor de Cana Eco rum, Worthy Park 109 rum, Alma Tepecha chile liqueur, orange juice, lime juice, mango syrup, guava soda, $24). This drink serves two people, is served in a cool volcano bowl with glowing red lava around it, and comes with a fire show. Unfortunately, right after it was served, the host came over and said we were over our time and had to leave shortly. Christian made up for it by giving us two tall pours to go enjoy in the bowling alley bar area which was fine. We were happy we got some extra time inside. The drink was also very good, balanced with a little complexity. We had a great time. There is so much great décor to look at. The drinks and food were very good, and some of the the drink presentations and special effects were the icing on the cake. All of the bartenders were very friendly and a lot of fun. We purchased up a few zombie glasses to take home as a souvenir. I'd definitely recommend visiting the Lucky Tiki in Highland Park! read more

My partner and I recently went on a tiki bar roadtrip from Tacoma down to Palm Springs, and I think that Lucky Tiki might be my top spot out of the 10 or so locations we visited. Drinks: Really, really good. My absolute favorite was the boat drink with foam on top, but we split several others and I liked everything we tried. Vibe: Unmatched. There are several drinks on the menu with a theatrical presentation that gets the whole bar involved. The space is small, so you'll inevitably have your conversation interrupted by an alluring siren's call or some ceremonial rowers. This is a crucial part of the tiki experience for me. The bartenders all have their different spin and clearly are in it for the love of the game. We had a lot of fun chatting with the staff. Tiki cocktails have expanded beyond rum into smokier tequila and mezcal drinks, which are more my speed. Lucky Tiki takes planning. You'll probably need a reservation weeks ahead and yes, they'll politely kick you out after 2 hours. These drinks are delicious and designed to ruin your decision-making skills. Worth it. Uber home, obviously. This spot is "hidden" in a bowling alley, and inside you'll find retro lighting and decor and tiki cocktails. First off, I have to praise 1933 group because I have loved every single bar they have revitalized and this one is no different. It's just floor to ceiling decorated with everything tiki. So many fun details and even interactive elements that turn on when a particular drink was ordered. That was probably my favorite part honestly. We ordered the Tiki Diablo, which is a large tiki drink with a flaming volcano. And yes it does have an interactive element. It was really good. Very fruity and strong, but not overly so. Service was excellent. Our waitress was on it and even waited to make sure my husband was back from the bathroom before lighting our drink on fire. I've been to the WeHo Lucky Tiki location a handful of times, so when this location opened, I knew I eventually had to make the trip out and give it a try. It's speakeasy-style, similar to the first location, but instead of a pickle barrel you activate the salty sailor. We made reservations to ensure we could get in, and I'm glad we did. The location is quite small and intimate. The decorations and atmosphere/ambiance are incredibly well done and arguably better than the WeHo location. Additionally, the cocktail and rum program's much better too, with a handful of cocktails unique to this location. Our server was kind and prompt, and unlike the WeHo location, our cocktails were made and arrived super quickly. If this location wasn't so out of the way, it might be my go-to spot. "Hidden" Tiki Bar in Highland Park (also one in West Hollywood), but also not very hidden, though there is a puzzle to get in. But, before all of that, have a reservation or the chances of you getting in are pretty slim. We had a reservation so headed over and were able to be seated right away. Too niched, even by tiki bar standards? Tucked in a recess at the mouth of the bowling alley, Lucky Tiki Highland Park is also a speakeasy. The prominent door handle makes it more of a bar with a doorbell though. Still, the wow factor hits when you enter the dimlit space trimmed with whimsical lanterns and tropical decor. From grungy Highland Park Bowl to Polynesian beach? Teleportion: Complete. Too bad it's a tad uptight for a casual night and too tight to handle special occasions. There's barely room to walk, and we couldn't even take a few photos without getting in the staff's way. We had to make reservations 2 week in advance. It's inconvenient in other ways too. For the restroom, you have to exit through a side door, use it upstairs, then get buzzed back into the bar downstairs. The logistics get weirder. Asking for small plates seemed to stress our server out. "We don't do plates, but I'll try to get them from the bowling alley." A restaurant that doesn't do plates?? She managed to get 3 plates for 4 of us. Menu items are all appetizers, and we ordered most of them. The Szechuan Pork Soup Dumplings & Hawaiian Pizza were memorable. Food quality was above average for a tiki bar. Drinks were on the small side though. The Painkiller packed a punch but Whatever Floats Your Boat (or Canoe) was feeble. But be warned my dear friend, to enter this hidden paradise you'll need a reservation in order to find the secret entrance to this cool little speakeasy. I had been meaning to check out the WeHo location but hadn't gotten around to it. The HLP spot is much more convenient since it's in my hood. The transformation of this room is epic and the décor is fabulously kitsch. Every inch screams tiki and gives off Polynesian vibes. We were seated in a cozy corner section and had a great view of the room. The place was packed and the music was a reasonable volume so we could still have an enjoyable conversation. Most of the cocktails come in elaborate drinking vessels designed by Danny 'Tiki Diablo' Gallardo (RIP) and are available for purchase to take home. (The Tiki Diablo cocktail is named after Danny.) Mom ordered the Lucky Tiki Mai Tai ($19) and I The Stung Skipper ($17). Both drinks were nicely balanced, delicious, and potent. (It's worth noting that this was the best Mai Tai I've tasted.) We also shared the Crab Rangoons ($16), which were very tasty. Food offerings are mainly appetizers, so if you're looking for dinner pop into the Highland Park Bowl or stop by one of the other great eateries nearby. Been here to this Lucky Tiki a few times, as well as the one in WeHo. What an awesome place. Love it. The vibe, ambiance, and atmosphere is so cool. Talk about escapism and transporting you somewhere else. Drinks are interesting and very good, and we enjoyed the food. Wish they had more Gluten Free options for someone like me with Celiac that cannot have Gluten, however, they did make me a protein-style burger (no bun), and modified the Caesar Salad to make it Gluten Free. Both were delicious. Special shout out to our server Erin, who is amazing. A TRUE SPEAKEASY! If it wasn't for yelp I wouldn't have known how the hell you get in this place. Pulling up me and my friend walked into a bar with bowling alley and industrial pipelines everywhere. Me confused (and already a little buzzed) race to Yelp to figure out where this is located. Hint is play close attention to "the salty sailor" directly in front walking from the street. Once inside you are fully indulged in the tiki bar theme. With not one piece of wall left uncovered. Sitting at the bar I could look around for hours noticing all the little details with the lamps, the artwork, etc. Me and my friend didn't have a reservation for a Friday night so were lucky to get a seat at the bar but it was packed. Highly recommend making a reservation unless you're ok with the uncertainty of not getting a spot inside. Servers were fantastic. Jill was our server at the bar and she was very welcoming and chill. Both the gentleman also behind the bar would make conversation with us and genuinely seemed like they were enjoying their time working while attending to all the customers. And the utmost importance - THE DAMN COCKTAILS. Incredible. Delicious. And STRONG. My friend ordered the pina colada with mezcal since he likes smoky liquor and it was delicious. Not super icy but perfectly blended and smooth. I ordered the chi chi drink that had a hint of strawberry paired with the macadamia nut flavor. This has a similar vibe where it's connected to another business (in this case, the Highland Park Bowl) and there's a speakeasy aspect to getting inside. My husband always said that all Highland Park is missing is a good tiki bar and now we've got one! They are reservation-only, but it's not hard to get one on a weeknight (for now). Drinks are top notch tiki-- boozy, sweet, interesting. Fave of the night-- the Stung Skipper, made by head bartender, Christian. Sounds simple on paper but very complex. It's presented on a lit coaster, which helps you take great pictures in the dark bar. They serve your usual island-style bar food - egg rolls, coconut shrimp, crab rangoons...the Hawaiian pizza was an unexpected fave. It's a personal-sized but loaded with toppings. That being said, the food was just okay. But that's not why you're here, let's be honest. It helps to keep you from getting drunk on their wonderful cocktails. Looking forward to coming back. It's absolutely beautiful inside and none of it is that fake tiki bullshit centered around plastic leis and cardboard cutouts; this is the real deal. If you're new to tiki, start here....this is the bar. This is what you'll compare every other tiki place to. Drinks are delicious and strong. My personal favorite is the Sun of Sons which features mezcal and coconut cream; it's perfect. They nail it every time. The whole menu is carefully crafted and has something for everyone, they even have beer! Though I haven't tried it, they also have food and that big ass pretzel looks amazing! This place has it all. Zero complaints. Shout out to Jo and Christian, thank you for being rad. The Metro Gold Line (now called the A-line) is a four minute walk from Lucky Tiki. Do with that what you will. And be sure to tip heavy! There is a 90 minute time limit on reservations (yes, you need a reservation), so make the most of it! I've said it once and I'll say it again.... FYI this place requires reservations, yet they apparently do not honor reservations. I have friends coming into town from Greece, so I made a reservation because they love tiki but have no way of experiencing it in Greece, and so they even got aloha shirts to wear. So after having a reservation for weeks, I get a text from this place saying someone booked a private event so my reservation is cancelled. How about instead of accepting $$$ for a private event that will deny customers their reservation, they make the private event work around what is available? Terrible way of doing business, but I hope they get lots of $$$ and engagement for the privileged private event attendees. read more

‼Short story: we got rejected by their RACIST bouncer because my 56-year-old Asian mom doesn't have her passport with her ‼ Long story: we came the Friday before, me and my husband were asked to show our id at the door and my parents then entered with us with no issue, but we couldn't get a seat because they were full. So I made a reservation for this Friday, again me and my husband were asked to show our id by a different bouncer(which makes sense since we barely turn 30 and we look pretty young), and the bouncer (woman with long dark curly hair) stopped my mom and asked her for her id. My mom doesn't speak English so I told the bouncer that's my mom and she's 56 years old, the bouncer said it doesn't matter but in a very rude and sarcastic way. I then showed her a picture of my mom's Chinese passport front page which has her photo, DOB, everything, but she refused to let us in because apparently the id "has to be physical". (My mom is a visitor and doesn't have a DL or real id, and doesn't carry her passport with her everywhere bc it might get lost.) And it's ridiculous to get IDed in your 50s in the first place. As I was explaining to my mom this whole ridiculous situation, the bouncer then rejected an old white man (literally all grey hair, in his 60s or 70s) right next to me for the same reason JUST SO I WOULDN'T CALL HER RACIST but she is. In conclusion, I would not be back and I would suggest any POC to not support business that hires employee like this. read more

The Lucky Tiki has been on my list of must try bars in my area for some time. Reservations are required. Consider calling ahead of time. Service was excellent and the drinks were well presented. Food was more on the appetizer scale but shareable. The chicken dumplings are a must have. The ambiance was epic, and the space, although small, was completely transformed into a Tiki paradise. To enter, walk into the highland park bowl and find the fortune teller statue, push the button which rings their bell. Unfortunately, I didn't know reservations were required but luckily we came early enough that we could enjoy this spot for 1.5 hour before reservations for our table were occupied. The host was so gracious to give us options where we could choose from an hour seating to an hour and half based on reservations. We really appreciated the hospitality and the experience on a Friday night. This place was busy and for good reason! We tried the calamari, burger bowl, fries (delicious but not on the menu), and dumplings. Our drinks consisted of Mai Tai's and rum barrels. This is such a fun spot. I was lucky enough to get a same-day reservation, and from the moment you walk in, it's a whole vibe. The hidden entrance makes it feel like a little adventure, and the drinks are sooo good and strong. Definitely try the popping boba drink, it's perfect. When you get to The Lucky Tiki, the address that's given to you, is for the Highland Park Bowling Alley (another one of their recreations), once inside you see the hostesses who takes you outside to the Salty Sailor Fortune Teller machine. You open the little secret panel and pull the knob, the Sailor speaks (though it was garbled, sounded more like being at a drive thru fast food place), it's giving you directions to open the door to your left and enter. Once inside you're in a very tiny hostess area (literally it's big enough for the desk, and three people. Our reservations were for 6:45 pm for two seats at the bar. I was very disappointed with the seats, they were the last two seats, and the seat I was in was literally looking at a cabinet! I complained to the bartender and he said that as soon as the couple sitting next to us left we could move over. When the host came back to the bar area, I again complained about these seats, and we were able to move one seat over, and they removed the seating area where I was. Who wants to go to a bar, and not being sober to enjoy the whole vibe of the tiki bar with a cabinet in your view? I was thinking, what if I had gotten drunk and hit my head on the corner of the cabinet. It was just an observation I was thinking out loud. Finally, sited in two seats within the middle of the stand enjoying the vibe of the bar, employees, our bartender Nick, was absolutely perfect. He answered all of my questions regarding the decor, the drinks, the food menu. We started out with the normal Mai Tai which were very tasty and strong. My second drink was called Rum Barrel (OMG), it was really strong and delicious (love it). We ordered the Hawaiian pizza, it was very tasty (we didn't realize it had red onions on it, neither one of us like onions), but dough was really good (we will order it again next time, without the onions). If someone orders the " Volcano" the lights start flashing, the bartenders start chanting to the Tiki Gods. Being that it was the 2nd week of the soft opening, there was a time limit at the bar (the bar is really tiny (3 bartenders, 8 people at the bar, and maybe 10 small tables in the whole bar), the time limit was 1 1/2 hours (time enough for drinks and food). Everyone was dressed the part for being at a tiki bar, employees and the patrons. On their website they sell shirts, glasses and tiki mugs. What a fun place!! The drinks are delicious. Kudos to the mixologists! The time limit is 90 minutes. Not a problem but not enough time to try more drinks. Perfect excuse to return. We visited the Lucky Tiki in Highland Park last weekend. It was packed and very lively! It is a smaller location than the original Lucky Tiki in West Hollywood but it lends itself to feeling very cozy. They serve food in addition to their delicious drinks. We ordered the Mai tai (a classic tiki drink done well), a rum barrel, siren's song, swizzle me timbers. We also ordered two personal sized pizzas, which were both good. The servers were all great; very attentive. The small location definitely helps with being able to get someone's attention. Reservations are required and currently they are committed to limiting guests to a timed visit; I can't recall if that was a 90 min visit. Parking was a little tricky, so allow time for that. We were able to secure one of the metered parking spots in the back, however when we left around 6:30, it was full. When you arrive, look for the Salty Sailor on your left of the Highland Bowl entrance. Use the button to engage the intercom. This is your way into the bar. Restrooms are upstairs. We look forward to returning as we really like the vibe of this location. The Highland Park area itself was full of people enjoying the nightlife. It was a great night to be out, last days of summer!
