This is my second visit to Arroyo Chop House. As we entered the parking lot, we were greeted by the valet parking staff (valet parking only). The mood of the restaurant is sophisticated and casual. It's been a while since I had a bloody piece of steak. Even longer since I came here last. And since I'm not thrilled about driving far for steak, we decided on Arroyo. Under the Smith Brothers Corp., Arroyo Chop House have 4 other siblings, all located in Pasadena. They have been here for over a decade, so they must be doing something right. Once we arrived, we here quickly shown to our table by a very pleasant hostess. Our server, though she never introduced herself (most upscale places should really do that) she was very helpful in answering questions about the menu, reciting the daily specials and giving us the right amount of time to decide. And decide we did... Starter: Beef tenderloin tartare. Very tender, salty and delicious. Only gripe is it didn't come with enough toast for the amount of tartare. Our server gladly brought us a bit more. $16.00 Main: Instead of ordering one filet mignon and one NY steak, we ordered the 2.5 lb. Porterhouse, which is essentially the same. Perhaps the NY portion wasn't aged 40 days had it been ordered separately, but when cooked properly, can anyone really tell the difference? The steak was a perfect medium rare, a bit bloody with a warm center. Delicious & both sides were tender and seasoned perfectly. *** For those who don't know what a porterhouse is, 1/2 filet mignon, and in this case, 1/2 NY steak divided by a large T-bone. $79.00 ** Some places will service 1/2 mignon, and 1/2 of a cheaper cut which is much tougher, so ask your server before ordering. Sides: Lobster mashed potato. Never tried it before so... not bad. Tastes exactly how we expect it to taste, bits of lobster on mashed tatoes. $12.00 Mac & cheese with black forest ham.... oh the sinful goodness of this side dish. Rich, heavy, salty with chunks of even saltier ham and a crust on top. Very, very good. $9.00 The service was great. The little attention to details were appreciated. Seeing we wore dark clothes (as I often do), they swapped out the white cloth napkins for black ones, so the lint won't show. Especially helpful if you're going out afterwards. Everything was so good, but conscience tells me our meal broke many health rules. Great for the soul, not so much for the heart. If I had to complain at all, their tableside peppermill can't seem to push out as much pepper as I like, thus making me really work for it. (OK, so it's not really a serious issue) Notes: * Their parking lot is valet only. But on weekends, there may be street parking. I'm not sure what/if they charge for valet, but we found a space right across the street. * As soon as you sit down, they offer you bread: half garlic & half sour dough. While most restaurants serve complimentary bread, Arroyo charges 5 bucks. And bread fills you up. We declined since we were there for steak, not bread. (what a profit margin, $5. for bread!) * Obviously, reservations are highly recommended. But if you arrive spontaneously, there are some counter seating with a view of the sous chefs in action. * Of course we ordered too much food. But the steak heats up very well the next day on a hot frying pan. If you have the same problem, heat pan well w/ a bit pf oil, place steak on it for a minute on each side to form crust and remove promptly. I still had med. rare to medium steak, still tender, still delicious. * If you want to take pictures, bring a camera w/ a flash. It's dim lighting in there. * Want room for dessert? Don't order the porterhouse. And their souffle is huge! Enough for 2, easily. Their holiday decorations really brought a festive mood to the dining area. Arroyo chophouse has been on my list of places to eat since February, but I just hadn't found the opportunity to go. We finally had a pretty important birthday coming up and it was time. The restaurant itself isn't too spacious, so you can imagine how this place would be during Valentines, Mother's day and other female-centered "holidays." Dim lights, romantic ambiance and the occasional patron walking around in a t-shirt, khaki shorts and those old addidas sandal things. We were seated in a roomy booth, and promptly greeted by our server. Now call it superficial, but one would think, in a classy establishment such as this, the wait staff would be much more, well attractive, or at the very least appealing to the eye, someone that could smile their way into a larger order, thereby acquiring a larger tip. Anyway, on to what's important. We got the cowboy ribeye, filet mignon, jalapeno corn custard, baked potato and asparagus. The sides were large enough and family style so we were able to bring some of that home. Enjoyed them all, although nothing blew my mind. The half sourdough/ half garlic bread was amazing minus the garlic bread. This was a good start to an inevitably great meal. Now the steaks. The steaks were phenomenal. Perfectly seasoned, melt in your mouth, marbly, fatty, juicy goodness. I thoroughly indulged in those wonderful slabs of meat. We ordered the chocolate souffle for dessert, which was alright, but I suppose I should have opted for something else. Oh they did have a card for the birthday celebrant, nicely written but such a gesture pales in comparison to The Capitol Grille (shameless plug I know). My family recently celebrated a birthday dinner here during covid. My SIL made reservations way early, and I was pleased to see we weren't put in the white, plastic tent. We were seated in that patio room with the fireplace! It was so nice and cozy. Very happy with the room where we sat. It was enclosed, warm enough and quick access to the restrooms. All staff were wearing masks, the servers had double (mask and face screen) and we had the BEST time here. I would highly recommend. This was my first time ordering the wagyu ribeye- umm, YES. The best filet mignon I've ever had. Parking is valet unless you want to park in the street. I'd recommend making a reservation. Food: I had ordered the petite filet which is definitely enough to fill me up, especially with a caesar salad, some garlic bread, and a shared garlic mashed potato on the side. My filet was cooked perfectly medium rare and once you start cutting the meat, you can feel how tender and juicy it is. Melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The caesar salad was really good and the garlic mashed potatoes were fluffy. I recommend asking for their steak sauces. They'll give you three types: Peppercorn Sherry Cream, Bernaise, and Bleu Cheese Bacon Cabernet Reduction. I love the bernaise because its creamy but I used all three sauces throughout my meal. We've been coming here for a few years now, it's always great food/service/amazing soufflés. We were last there on Monday, celebrating two birthdays. Service was good, food was good although they messed up my husband's order. He asked for a cowboy and got something else entirely; there was no bone in the meat and the cowboy is a bone in rib-eye. The waiter apologized and they charged us half. We ordered the souffle as it's our favorite thing on the menu-we always recommend coming here for the soufflé so we were very excited for dessert to say the least. Unfortunately it did not taste the same and it was not good at all. It was dry, did not taste like it was freshly made when we put in the order as we got our entrees. It tasted premade and that's not what we were expecting. This may have been the best meal I've ever had. The Mrs. Pink cocktail was light and refreshing, the oysters were delicious. What really blew our minds were the entrees (wagyu filet and wagyu ribeye) and the sides (truffle Mac and cheese and lobster mash)! Recently went with friends (whom we call family) and the service is a million notches above par. Friendly service, the waiters and servers interact and make you feel part of the chop house family. The bartenders are amazing, especially Melissa!! She's friendly, knows how to hold a conversation and def makes you want to come back for more. The food is incredibly well prepared. Pretty decent! Went with a few friends for the heck of it. I got a ribeye and it was good but a little on the fatty side and I had to cut out a lot of fat. Tips For An Epic Date At Arroyo Chop House*: 1. If your date is looking amazing and she is about to put on a coat to walk from the crowded valet into the restaurant, don't let her. It's only a few steps. haha I'm kidding (er... no I'm not. I mean, it's only a few steps and... well, look at her). 2. Scallops wrapped with pancetta is a great starter choice and the spinach salad among the salads. For sides, the shoestring potatoes come out in an enormous pile and so do the mountain mushrooms. They were good, but I kind of wish I had gone with asparagus. Maybe next time. 3. At least one of you should order the cowboy ribeye. Probably both of you. If only you got it, cut off that tender, dark part near the bone - you know what I'm talking about - and give it to her. I know, it's painful, but it's also a grand gesture the likes of which is understood throughout the entire animal kingdom. She will feel it right in her amygdala. 4. Word on the street is that they slightly overcook here, so I ordered a medium rare - I usually order medium - and it was perfect. 5. Your server is a pro; trust him. He is no mere actor waiting tables. Otherwise he wouldn't have revealed that the way he likes his steak is "charred medium rare plus." This is one of the best local steakhouse on my list, from its interior ambient to its consistent quality in their seafood and steaks, they are just as competitive to any steakhouse in Beverly Hills, if not better. My fav on the menu is their porterhouse for two, I have also tried their regular porterhouse, it felt more like a T-bone steak, they are completely different IMO. Porterhouse for two had a thicker cut, juicier meat, meatier bite, and overall more tender. Porterhouse is one of the most difficult steaks to prepare due to the nature of its meats having one side is strip and the other is filet, to cook without a porterhouse oven, one side can easily be overcooked and undercooked on the other. it takes both the hardwares, the equipment and software, the skills and experience to cook them to perfection. Bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered the sea of Cortez (tequila) and Grounds for Divorce (bourbon). Both were really good. Catchy names for the customized cocktails. Cute. We were in the bar for only 5 minutes when the hostess grabbed us. Our table was ready! Awesome! Our server (I forgot her name) was so sweet. We sat by the back with the fireplace. Now having said that, I need to strongly disagree. The service as always was perfect. The service is good, and the food is delicious. Starters: They offer complimentary sourdough bread, but for $5 you can get half sourdough and half garlic bread. The garlic bread is good, but it's just the same bread with garlic spread. The oysters are fresh so get some if you like them. The beef vegetable soup was mediocre and is not worth the $8. Entrees: Highly recommend the Chilean seabass. The fish was perfectly cooked and flakey. The pork chop with apple sauce is also a highlight. You can ask them to cook with extra butter so the outside doesn't get charred as much. The filet mignon was tasty and juicy after we sent back the first one as it was lukewarm and dry. The waiter and manager have excellent customer service so we enjoyed the quality service. Sides: Steamed veggies were nothing special, but the mashed potatoes were very good. Also highly recommend the creamed spinach! Desserts: Cheesecake is nothing special. I prefer the one at Ruth Chris. The Grand Marnier soufflé is amazing! Out of all the steak houses in Pasadena, the Arroyo Chop House is my favorite go to place when it comes to good steak joints. I actually prefer them over Houston's, Smittys and Ruth Chris. Nice huge prime cuts of beef cooked perfectly medium, tender and so flavorful. The steaks come with 3 sauces - peppercorn, blue cheese/bacon Cabernet and Bernaise. My personal preference was the peppercorn cause it enhanced the flavor of the steak the most and very tasty. We also ordered the garlic mash potatoes, asparagus spears with hollandaise sauce, caramelized corn and creamed spinach which were all excellent side dishes. When you pull up to the parking lot, you only have the option to valet your car (complimentary) or self park on the street. The ambiance inside the restaurant is traditional, yet classy. There's a bar area, with TV's mounted to the wall. The service is always impeccable! My ABSOLUTE favorite thing here is the barbecue shrimp salad. There is no other restaurant that makes a shrimp salad THIS good. MUST GET. My usual is always the ribeye.. it has a great flavor by itself. But, Arroyo will give three different steak sauces along with your steak. You really can't leave the restaurant without having dessert. What was meant to be a special dinner out turned out to be a dinner at Cheese Cake Factory. The food was good, waitress was great but where we were seated was horrible. Spent 1k on dinner and didn't enjoy a minute of it. Such a disappointment. We were seated with a group of loud obnoxious 50 something's. We couldn't even hear the person seating next to us speak. We asked the manager to ask them to quite down at least a little. Hey we were there to celebrate too we understood that a group is louder then a couple. When they manage asked they even got more loud. It was very disappointing that an upscale establishment like the Chop House would feel loud like the Cheese Cake Factory on a busy day. I wish the manager would have come around to see how things were after the original communication via waiter to the loud crowd. We have been here many times before I feel the management doesn't care. My wife and I dropped by on Saturday night after watching the Santa Anita Derby earlier. This place always attracts the horse crowd because service impeccable, generous pours and excellent food. We didn't have reservations but lucky to find 2 spots at the bar and had a wonderful evening. I've been to most of the local steak houses in LA but this place serves the best bone-in-ribeye by far. Fresh oysters and large shrimp cocktail delicious as well. Arroyo Chop House never disappoints and always a fun, friendly atmosphere. Normally a "special" is something not normally offered on the menu at a "special" price... at or a little below the cost of regular menu item. It turns out these were +25% more. I know costs are rising, but the food quality and service was not on par with the menu prices. Also, the seasoning was not exceptional. I would almost compare it to O***ack Steakhouse at almost 4x the price. We were visiting to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but we occasionally visit these kinds of restaurants to celebrate everyday life. My buddy ordered the petite fillet charred on the outside and warm in the middle which he liked but didn't finish so I was wondering if it was not up to standard. I got the Rib eye and I was royally disappointed. I should have eaten that steak with no added flavoring but I needed some sauce. It was not properly seasoned because there was no flavor in my steak. The Souffle arrived as we finished up and it was okay. Nothing to write home about. I haven't had a steak in like a month but my taste buds weren't joking about the poor quality piece of meat that was staring me in the face. Two thumbs down for me on this one. If you want the best steak in Pasadena - This is the place! We go here several times a year and I realized I had never given them a shout out. You are awesome! They have done an excellent job dealing with all the CovidBS while still making an enjoyable place to dine. They have both inside and outside/tent dining. The staff is excellent! They even offered to go next door to Parkway Grill for my favorite drink (Batch 40 - Thanks Mark!). I have a hard time deciding between the ribeye and the New York. Both are excellent. They even have a good lobster tail add on. We always take food home. All our steaks are always cooked to perfection and they have some of the best sides I have ever tasted. The ambiance of the majority of good steakhouses is similar: dark super cold and servers in white . Arroyo is no exception. There aren't many places to have a good steak in Pasadena so we headed here for a business dinner It was to summarize the dinner a good solid meal but maybe lacking finesse in some of the dishes Jose the server was very nice We had 2 delicious appetizers that I recommend - the barbecue shrimps and the scallops wrapped in bacon : both flavorful - we then had a cowboy ribeye , a giant piece of meat that actually should be shared given its size and I had the bone in filet : very tender but like all the filets lacking maybe some depth; I will have the ribeye next time - the sides were ok : lobster mash where the lobster was not very present in flavor and the truffle Mac and cheese which was average (the pasta was nothing special and the cheese and the truffle did not come across flavor wise as anything delicate and distinct. I would not have them again . The spinach could have deserved some lemony sauce We finished with a grand marnier souffle that was out of this world : must get I will come again but stick to my preferred rib eye read more

The Chophouse is a staple in Pasadena. A traditional steakhouse that offers fine dining and amazing service. There is nothing you would order here having you feel underwhelmed. My favorite is the Cesar salad, although the market heirloom salad is spectacular. Jalapeño corn soufflé is a must try. I have never seen this side dish offered anywhere else. Main courses I suggest are the Chilean sea bass and the Rib eye Oscar style. I always splurge and get the Grand Marnier and Chocolate soufflé with a side of vanilla bean ice cream. Food: My old friend and I came here for a couple of cowboy ribeye steaks. For sides, we ordered the snap peas and lobster mashed potatoes. I also tried their soup of the day, a crab tomato soup. The soup was good but nothing spectacular. The sides paired well with the steaks. Now for the reason why people come here to eat, the steaks. They're good as is cooked medium rare, but they also bring you some sauces in case you want some more flavors... béarnaise, peppercorn sherry cream, and bleu cheese smoked bacon cabernet reduction. The steaks here are not super charred on the outside, but yet they are cooked perfectly on the inside. The steaks were garnished with some baby carrots and a few leafy greens. Service: Service is always good whenever we come here. We showed up about an hour before our reservation and they were able to seat us right away. On this particular visit, our waitress kept checking up on us quite often to fill our glasses. Location: You can use valet parking or just park on Marengo. Great steakhouse, nice vibes, and fantastic service. Prices are what you'd expect at a place like this but the food was honestly really good. Another great thing I like is that they don't require your whole party to be present before seating you--which really worked out for me because I was late as usual... So this is what our party of 6 ordered: - Garlic bread - Porterhouse steak & ribeye - Garlic mashed potatoes - Truffle mac & cheese - Soufflé Normally my bf and I are pretty big eaters but this was surprisingly really filling even with the 6 of us sharing. The Porterhouse was sooooo melty and tender! Seasoned perfectly as well--not toooo heavy handed on the salt and pepper but as much as a good American steak calls for. Mashed potatoes were good but you can't really go wrong with that. Mac and cheese was alright, but I think I would recommend lobster mac instead just based off my experiences at other similar establishments. The garlic bread was also really really good even though we had it cold since we came later than the rest of my party. The souffle was lemon flavored and different from anything else I've ever had (in a good way!!) I would suggest getting that if you're in the mood for dessert after dinner.
