AR Cafe has always been one of places we have to visit when in Surfside but, unfortunately, we were able to stay due to the horrible smell.

This is a breakfast taco gem on the Boulevard in Freeport. They open at 5:00 am and I showed up at 6:15. I ordered basic. El Taco Gordo, stuffed into a fresh house-made tortilla and sat in by myself. Food came fast and it was everything I expected and more. Mas gordo! The kind folk who anchor that joint early in the morning, offered red or green sauce. It caught me slightly off guard as I had my eye on the plentiful bottles of Cholula, my go-to breakfast condiment. I casually requested green and noted their cautionary comment about the heat! I ate in solitude (as I desired) and watched working folk come and go with their orders in a steady stream. That is always a good sign, imo. In a signature, high-five sign off, I will say this was an epic breakfast taco. Try the green sauce! It's house made and has powerful garlic that does not detract from the true essence of the sauce. This is a hidden gem in Freeport. Probably the best place in Freeport to get your breakfast taco fix. First, this is a little hole in the wall, but make sure you get there early because the locals know about this place and it can get pretty packed. Service and be hit or miss depending on how busy they are but they make sure you get your refills and salsa. My favorite taco is the chorizo, egg and cheese. The tortillas are homemade and the taco is as big as my forearms. If you have a hefty appetite, two is gonna fill you up for most of the day. For me, I might be able to eat 1/2 of one. Most people can handle one. The breakfast plates are also huge and come with beans and potatoes. There is an American breakfast on the menu, but why would you do that?!? Get a taco. This place is everything you hope for in a hole-in-the-wall Mexican food restaurant. Good authentic food, huge portions, good prices, especially for being in/near a tourist town, and a very homemade feel and taste, especially the tortillas! I had a chorizo and egg breakfast "taco" which is basically an unwrapped burrito. BF had huevos rancheros and enjoyed it as well. The red sauce and the salsa were very flavorful and fresh. Service was average, friendly, but we didn't interact with the waiter much. He greeted several other customers by name as he checked in on them, which told me that they have plenty of regulars. One downside to the ambience was the overwhelming smell of disinfectant cleaner as soon as we walked in the door. While I understand some people take this as a sign of a sanitary restaurant, when it is that strong it carries over into the flavor of the food and sometimes I end up not being able to eat there. Went for lunch and was totally amazed by the portions. I wasn't as hungry as my husband, so I ordered just a single beef fajita taco and sliced avocado. My husband ordered the summer plate. Holy cow! A single taco was HUGE!!! I only ate half of it and brought the other half home. The summer plate was good and just the right amount for a lunch. Great service and very clean. Also they have pieces of Mexican cakes in to go boxes on the counter. My husband got the German chocolate cake and it was moist and fresh and delicious. I've visited AR's and have always been impressed with their Menudo. I live in Austin so when I visit family in Angleton/Freeport. It's a must go! But this last visit....10/21. Was a big disappointment. Someone else is making the Menudo now. My reasons 1)Menudo hardly had any color.2) Tasted like they put an overdose of Chicken Knorr. 3)Menudo cut up real small. I'm so disappointed. Years ago AR's was great for lunch and breakfast. It's not the same. I went for lunch and got carne cuisada but it was not fixed right. The meat was tender but the gravy was watery. Couldn't tell the beans from the gravy. I thought maybe an off day. Went again to try breakfast. Taco was lukewarm and there was literally a huge piece of egg shell in my food. It was not as good as I remembered it. Someone said the older generation has turned it over to the younger. Well I'm good. Guess I need to find a new spot. I need the old cook to teach the new cook because this is not it! Needless to say, that egg shell was a turn off and I threw the rest of the taco away. We've heard great things about AR's, so stopped In for lunch today and we both had the Friday lunch special which was called the Beefy Plate. Beef chalupa, beef enchilada and beef taco. This place has great food and big portions. My favorite is the menudo. They actually fill up the Togo cup with more food and less broth. Remember, everything is in large portions. To be honest. I would give them a 4.5 star. The food is real good, but not great. They're reasonable for the amount of food you receive. I come here at least three times a month, ONLY because the tacos are big but unfortunate very greasy. They're always rude and always jack up the prices without you knowing. I placed an order today over the phone and asked for a price and was hung up on. I came in and the tacos seemed more priced than they usually are, I always get 4 salsas and this time was told they're $0.35 each and I've never been charged. MARIAS tacos is WAY better. I'd eat here again. Curious why the taco salad isn't served in one of their delicious home made flour tortillas. The breakfast 'tacos' are what we consider burritos as are most in this region. I had the fajita beans and cheese breakfast burrito. It was good. Hubby arrived in time for the carnitas guisada special but opted for the chicken taco salad. It was ok... for lunch but presenting it in a crispy fried handmade flour tortilla. The beef has excellent flavor the chicken good but not as good as the beef fajita beef. For those of us who live in the brazosport area, this is a really good tex mex place to eat at. We have been coming here for years and are rarely disappointed. Today, our server was horrible. But we were told she is new... so I guess that gives her a pass. Try the Carne guisada... great flavor. .. meat cooked perfect... and their queso is the absolute best. Homemade flour tortillas that are made correctly. . They don't have that greasy look like most other places. The portion sizes are good. BUT, in my Carne guisado taco, my meat portion was comparable, if not greater, than what was on the Carne guisada plate... so $3.75 for the taco compared to the $9.75 plate? Choose wisely.
