I had never been into a Five Below and had no idea what they sold. I was picking up fancy refrigerated dog food next door at PetSmart and thought I'd wander in and see what they sold. Was it refrigerated items? The name Five Below made me wonder. As I popped in, a very friendly guy said hello and welcomed me, but not in an insincere way. (I'm always a bit sus about that) I started to realize this was an upgraded 99 Cent store with a $5 limit, and was curious to explore. I really responded well to the nice lighting, cool oversized signage and clean feel of the store. I saw items that are at better prices than other stores, but I wondered how people knew what to purchase here. I was immediately greeted by the very wonderful, specific smell that wafts through Hallmark stores and my senses took me back to childhood shopping excursions with my Mom to buy holiday cards at our local Hallmark. The store is chock full of cards and wrap, which makes it worth stopping here to get something unique. There are all kinds of decor and licensed products displayed in a weaving pattern which made the floor pattern interesting. I have continued to shop here for my wrap and cards since first stopping in last year, knowing that there will be a selection of cards for nieces and nephews that I just can't find anywhere else. I had the receipt, and I simply wanted to exchange it. However, the manager, Steven/Stephen, told me he could not process the return because the item was purchased at the Palm Desert store. I find it unreasonable that HomeGoods would refuse an exchange for a defective item purchased at another HomeGoods location, especially when the customer has a receipt. I have been a long-term TJX/HomeGoods customer, and I have never had an experience like this before. I do not know whether this is a company policy or a store-level decision, but either way, it reflects poorly on the brand. A customer should not be turned away over a defective $4.99 item with proof of purchase. As I was shopping I could hear the cashier interacting with all of the customers with great enthusiasm, having something positive to remark about each person. I watched as one by one, people would leave with a huge smile on their face. When it was my turn to check out I got a look at his name tag and said "What's up, Tony?" which lit him up like a Christmas tree! When I picked them up today, there was no charge by the company. In fact, there was the bag of beautifullly and thoughtfully embroidered stockings and gift cards for Val and her family. I was in shock. I think I started crying and the owner gave me a hug. What a wonderful business this is. When I dropped off the stockings, I told them why I was embroidering them; that my mom had gifted Val, her husband and kids stockings many many years ago, and they were burned up in the fire. People are good. So grateful to have found this gem of a business. They made a difference.
