To my surprise, we the campsite was really great and we all had a fantastic time (and no one killed each other!) We are big campers, living in Colorado, but this Nebraska campsite was really pleasant in comparison to many we've been to over the years. I credit our campsite location (78/79/80) because it was nice a shaded, not super crowded and had a beautiful view of Lake McConaughy. The sites in the front near the restroom and shower facilities were really crowded and loud, so my experience would have been much different if we were there. The bathrooms were really nice and even the outhouse near our campsite was not terrible(you know... for an outhouse!). There is a great little store at the entrance that sells pretty much anything you can think of (including coffee!!! since the person in our group in charge of the coffee decided to sleep in both mornings!! She's fired!) All in all, we had a great time and will most definitely be back!

The grounds are beautifully maintained, the sites are attractive and well-kept, and everything feels thoughtfully cared for. A special thank you to Kristy and Angel, whose hospitality helped make our stay even more enjoyable. They even stayed open a little later than normal to welcome us after a long day of traveling, which was greatly appreciated. The campground may be on the smaller side, but it is absolutely bursting with thoughtful touches. The bathrooms were spotless and stocked with real paper towels and quality toilet paper--small details that did not go unnoticed and really enhanced the experience. We also appreciated the two pet areas, along with several sites that feature fenced-in play yards. The back sites are especially charming, with nice grassy areas that add to the relaxing atmosphere. The freeway is nearby, and while you can hear some traffic noise, it was not bothersome and certainly did not take away from our enjoyment of the campground. Everyone we met was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. We wanted for nothing during our stay. Saying we liked this park would be an understatement. This KOA not only lives up to the KOA standard--it exceeds it. We would gladly stay here again and highly recommend it to others.

At first you are in a little store with wooden shelves and then in the dining area with a vintage lunch counter lined with stools. We find a table and right away and a young woman comes out to take our drink orders. The menu is simple with many fried items. Rocky mountain oysters were ordered as an appetizers. I wasn't a big fan at all! I ordered the chicken stripes and fries which came with coleslaw. The grub was hot, fresh and plentiful! No room for dessert. Our boys got to experience what it's like out in the countryside of this part of Nebraska. They fed llama's, swung in a big old tree swing, tossed some horseshoes and slept comfortably under the sound of a rainstorm on the roof. Everything is lush and green. Our hosts are very good people to know. We ate dinner at an old café down the road and enjoyed the burgers and chicken strips for the kids. The locals here treated us very nice. I found this little town remarkable and so rich in history that it overwhelmed my senses in a wonderful way. The sky at dusk and early morning are spectacular.

Their hospitality was outstanding: switching rooms when the first didn't suit, providing a generous spread of fresh fruit and homemade cinnamon rolls each morning, heating up baby food, lending us dishes for our barbecue, and then washing them afterwards...the list goes on and on. There's a lovely patio area, and a beautiful living and dining area inside. The lawn comes complete with lawn games and an old-fashioned tree swing. Dave will cook up fantastic meals to order and take care of your every need. Additionally, the small (nay, tiny) town is perfect for wandering, and features a lovely playground, a (sometimes open) swimming pool, a library that's open for a few hours on Tuesdays and Fridays, a one-man farmer's market on Friday, and the Most Unlikely Place, an art gallery and cafe that's lives up to its name. The few people you find here are kind, curious, sociable, and generally delightful. You'd think all this would come at a sky-high price, but the prices are equal to or better than any of the chain hotels in Ogallala. For about 20 extra minutes of driving off the beaten path of Highway 80, you'll find an oasis of peace, beauty, and goodwill. Be forewarned, though: one night here will have you wanting more!

Noise: The building is solid, but thin carpets and solid surfaces let sounds reflect throughout the building. Odd-numbered rooms face an interstate highway. Rooms 212-216 overlook the lobby and are especially noisy. Lighting: It is customary for hotels in western Nebraska to have extremely poor lighting, especially in the bathroom. Hence I'll rate the lighting here as "good." If you'll be doing a lot of reading or paperwork, you still might want to bring a lamp of your own--my 12 W, 900 lumen LED lamp was about three times brighter than any of the provided lamps. Shower: Fairly tall, adjustable spray shower head. The provided Raio shampoo contains SLS, which contributes to dry, itchy skin in 20-40% of people. Alternatives: The Holiday Inn Express across the interstate is clean, consistent, and extremely expensive. The Best Western is promising, but I haven't stayed there recently. Other hotels in Ogallala strike me as a bit sketchy. In North Platte, consider the Best Western Plus, La Quinta, or Husker Inn; bedbugs are common at most of the other hotels there, so be sure to read recent reviews. Historical notes: I've stayed at this property annually for about 30 years. Originally it was a Holiday Inn Express, then the independent Stagecoach Inn, then an America's Best Value Inn. The warm, western atmosphere of the original hotel has been completely erased. The new decor seems to have been beamed in from outer space. You could be in Boca Raton or LA as easily as Ogallala. The once-famous locally prepared breakfasts are of course gone. The "hunters cabins" with dog kennels are still here, as is a small RV park with a great laundry facility. There is still a nice pond out back with nice places to walk a dog, but the pond itself is strictly off limits. There's a fairly new Tesla charging station in the back parking lot. I'm glad the property has been revitalized, but I sure miss the Western character which used to be an important part of every visit to historically-rich Ogallala.
