My ten year old child and I had a magical experience with Artisan Piano Services that I would love to share. Short backstory: my great grandfather was an incredible musician who had mastery of and played all sorts of instruments: viola, violin, mandolin, piano, banjo, harmonica, organ, guitar....and I'm probably leaving out a few more. When he passed away in 1997, he left his piano to my mom. When my mom died in 2006, the piano then came to me, and has barely been played since. I set the intention about three months ago to learn how to play it, and have been practicing daily, making pretty good progress. After several moves, including one from Great Falls, Montana, to Portland, the piano was in desperate need of a tune and thorough maintenance. So I called Artisan Piano Services, who responded to my voicemail within five minutes of me leaving it. I was then scheduled with their technician David, who arrived at my home exactly on time for the appointment, and dressed as though he had just stepped out of an upscale haberdashery. The rich sound that my piano now makes gives me the chills. And to hear the tech say that the piano is in excellent condition and will last our family "many more generations" made me want to cry tears of joy. I vividly remember listening to my mom play Moonlight Sonata and Clair de Lune over and over again (by my request, they are still favorites), and I hope to be able to play my family's requests that brilliantly someday too. A major highlight was a beautiful piece of music that our technician David played after he finished the tuning, and the look of wonder on my child's face during that! We had Jon H. As our technician and he was awesome . He was professional, polite and punctual. He tuned our piano and helped us repair an issue my daughter was having for quite some. She's been so pleased with the results. The rates were fair and comparable to what I've paid others and was happier with the job they did. I haven't even finished with using Artisan's services. Yet, I feel compelled to write a review now. A couple of Fridays ago, Jon finished with another client early, and headed over to my house an hour early. Jon explained everything he did and was not bothered in the least by my watching him just about the entire time. I did this out of fascination, not because I need to "keep an eye" on him. As soon as I saw the care that Jon took in just unveiling the inner workings of my family piano, I could tell he had great respect and knowledge about not only the instrument itself, but how much an old piano can mean to a person. He was so willing to share information and answer my many questions that although he started at 1, and presumably should have been done about 2, he didn't leave here until almost 3! And I was the last appointment of his day on a Friday, no less. Jon could very well have rushed through the job or given me limited answers in order to finish up but he did not. When I played it a few hours later, the difference was noticeable already. My piano sounds much crisper, and my keys seem more pliable. I am going to book the second tuning session that Jon highly recommended, and probably hire Artisan to perform some tune-ups on the hammers. We haven't had our piano tuned since prior to the Pandemic. Additionally, we just moved to Portland from Tucson. Our piano definitely sounded sad. Artisan Piano was very responsive on the phone and flexible with dates/times. Jonathan was great when he checked out my piano - it is a Baldwin Acrosonic and apparently his mom played one, so it was like an old friend to him. He spent several hours getting it shape, including vacuuming the inside. It sounded fabulous! I'm definitely going to have them back in the next 6 months for a tuneup after the weather change. If there were more stars to give I'd give them to Artisan's. I found an old shotty looking piano at GoodWill. It was worn down and missing keys and chucks of wood on the sides. It played well so it was worth a try to fix it up once we found out it was from 1911 and restored it could be worth so much more then the $125 we paid for it. After doing some research we found Dave with Artisan's. He was open and honest with the process and pricing, but he didn't tell me how absolutely amazing the Piano would be when it was done. I was super disappointed in the service I received from Artisan. They charged $60 more than the going rate. The guy who came spent a scant hour, did not fix any of the problems, broke a string, and left the tuning in what I considered sad shape. He then told me it would be the same price, $195, to come back and replace the broken string. I found someone else, a pro, who fixed all the problems (sticking hammers, hammer return strings out of place, replacement string) and tuned it properly for far less. read more

We have a family piano (a Ludwig upright) that is around 100 years old. It needed tuning and maintenance - several small pieces of the action had broken. When I called around to check on bids, Artisan Piano was by far the most professional organization. They answered their phone promptly, were able to answer my questions, and scheduled an appointment in a timely manner. They charge $95 for an inspection while some other shops offer a free first look, but I was impressed with the professional approach of Artisan, and we decided to go with them. Bethany always called me the day before the technician was scheduled to arrive in order to remind me of the appointment. Ryan, our technician, was always punctual (to the minute!) and professional in his manner. He welcomed my input and was able to assess the piano thoroughly, giving me a detailed plan of action, with several levels of cost (e.g., just a tuning, tuning and maintenance, full restoration including refinishing). I did not feel any sort of hard sell - my wife and I were able to discuss our options and decided to do tuning and maintenance. We particularly appreciated Artisan's practice of waiving the $95 inspection fee when work is ordered that comes to more than $1000. Ryan returned to take the action of the piano into the shop, where they were able to fix or remanufacture several unusual components to restore the piano's full functionality. The work was done in two weeks, as scheduled, and Ryan braved the first ice storm in early December to return the action and to tune the piano in time for playing holiday music. The piano now has a tone and touch that astounds me, and I look forward to many more years of playing this beautiful instrument. Every interaction with Artisan Piano was a joy. One expects a certain level of technical competence - that's the baseline for being in business. Artisan exceeded my expectations at every turn. Their customer service indicates to me that they have systems in place to ensure that things run smoothly for their clients, and that in turn indicates to me that their technical side has similar systems to ensure appropriate support of what is fundamentally a very complex machine. Hands down the best piano tuner shop in the Portland metro area. The people who work there are not only highly professional, but also extremely courteous. Sandy who takes care of scheduling was helpful and courteous and calling us the day before to confirm the technician's appointment is a very nice touch. Our 1921 vintage Steinway Model B needed tuning desperately and Ryan was able to make the trek to our house to take care of that. He also asked the wife how she wanted the keys to feel while playing. After two visits, not only is the piano sounding better than ever, but the wife tells me the key strokes are much lighter and therefore more enjoyable to play. Artisan Piano does indeed offer 5-star service. I contacted them about restoration options for my no longer playable 1928 Steinway M and within an hour, David had emailed me back. We live in Bend and David just happened to be visiting the following week and offered to stop by. He called the day before to verify we were still on and then again, 30 minutes before his arrival time. He looked over my aged piano and then we sat down and he presented options for different levels of restoration. I really appreciated his effort to find an affordable price for action work + belly repair + cabinet refinishing. He was even going to help me out with shipping. We arrived here from Tennessee in 2012. We moved a baby grand Kawai, and of course needed a tuning after the move. We called Artisans and have used them ever since. Not only is their tuning practice impeccable, and their staff very professional, but during our first tuning, the technician noticed some piano damage from the move, that we probably would not have noticed. They recommend a craftsman to repair the damage and they did a terrific job. We are VERY pleased with Artisan Piano Services.!! read more
