Symphony No. 2: Trading in my piano. I had purchased a 1930's Knabe grand from Portland Piano in 2012. It's served me well, but totally needs to be rebuilt, and I don't want to spend my cash on that. On top of that, I've downsized via divorce and it's been in storage for about a year. All this time, I'm reviewing pianos and all of my options. I'm an old-school, classically-trained pianist. In the past, I have never been impressed with digital pianos. But knowing my footprint and not wanting to annoy the neighbors, I'm thinking I need to have a silencer in place. The after-market products that you can put on an acoustic is one thing, but after having gone down from a grand piano to an upright footprint, I'm not really crazy about getting "an upright." So I look into Kawai Novus 10S and compare it with the Yamaha AvantGrand N1X. These are upright sized digital pianos with a very real feel and sound to them. Look up the technology if you're interested, it's prettt cool. I can't really figure out why the Kawai is 8k more. Both are stunning in terms of action, feel and audio quality. Both feel like their brand... Kawai is warm and yielding, Yamaha is more quick and bright. Both have great tone. Some people love one over the other, but to me, they are comparable in touch and sound quality. I don't see 8k more worth of it in the Kawai. Also. Take a look at the case on the Kawai vs Yamaha. Yamaha has a much more clean, sleek look. Kawai just looks...heavy...visually. Of course, Portland Piano is willing to take my piano as trade in and sell me the Novus. They aren't Yamaha dealers. When I am telling the salesperson I really wanted to get into a Yamaha N1X, it was a better price, they had a few choices... lower the price on the Kawai to make it worth my business, or... not. Salesperson pinged me to tell me about a hot Clavinova they got in on consignment. Obviously she doesn't know her pianos very well, if a customer is looking for something like a 10S or N1X, and they call all pushy about a Clavinova. Portland Piano did not do much of anything to retain me as a customer, so I called over to Classic Pianos. Not only did I not get the runaround, they offered me a trade-in, sight unseen, along with a swift purchase over the phone. When the salesperson said it might take a bit because they have to ship it in, imagine my happiness when they called just a few days later to schedule delivery. We were in the market for a new or used Baby/Parlor Grand Piano for my daughter's home. We made a stop at "Classic Pianos" in Portland. We were pleasantly helped by Taylor Unis. Taylor asked ...what we were looking for? .... shared maybe a used grand piano sized at 5'3" to 5'8". He then showed us some models he had. He shared a little about the pianos and allowed us to play them. He was very helpful, not pushy, and gave us time to play and dialogue about the piano condition, sound, and playability. This place is freakin amazing! So many awesome pianos and piano related things- just a joy to be in there. The used piano I ended up going with had pretty scuffed up upholstery on the bench, so Taylor offered to reupholster it for free if I brought in the fabric. It was a fun creative project to find the right fabric and Taylor reupholstered the bench within a couple of hours after I dropped the fabric off. The delivery people were nice and did a great job. I am not a pianist, but I have attended several Jazz concerts at this venue--pre-Covid of course. It was a great, intimate setting with good acoustics. Additionally, I got to hear some of their pianos played by some extremely talented and well-known pianists. The employees were always very pleasant at these concerts, and I imagine that they'd be plenty helpful if you were shopping for a piano. We felt completely at ease and able to walk around, trying out different pianos without feeling pressured at all. It was time to finally get a piano...a purchase I had put off for over 10 years. I looked around at some free pianos on Craigslist and such, but got drawn to Classic Pianos based on their advertisements and their bargain basement specials. I'm not a serious piano player, but I know what a quality instrument sounds and feels like. I tried out a few of the bargain basement pianos, and they were fine, but nothing I really loved. We then went upstairs and I tried a few of the lower cost instruments that were not bargain basement, and they were fine, too, but I wasn't sold. I then went back to the basement and found a Yamaha that was out on demo and had been returned that I really liked. I purchased my piano (actually the last two) from Classic pianos. They are the best people to deal with. And they let you trade up, which is what I have done. They have tuned my piano a few times. Just had a tuning done this morning as the piano was moved from one room to another which required dismantling it to some degree. The piano movers did not reassemble it correctly so the dampers weren't working. John was able to put in all back together correctly and then tune it. He did a wonderful job and is quite pleasant also. A couple of years ago, I had someone else tune it (thought I might be able to save a couple of bucks). Wrong, they did a terrible job. Lesson learned, I will only have Classic pianos and Artisan piano services work on my pianos. read more

I used to work in the lovely sheet music department of a somewhat evil piano store (not in Portland), so I have to admit that when it came time to buy a piano, I was nervous. I knew that piano stores can be a lot like car lots, where sleazy salesmen try to talk you into far more piano than you can afford. But I am pleased to report that Classic Piano is not like that. The staff were knowledgeable, kind, and clearly in love with their pianos. Our salesman showed us options in all price ranges, and did not talk disparagingly about the cheaper options. Then he kindly left us alone, while we wandered the place, trying out various pianos. After two hours, I found "the one". The price was exactly what I expected. Also, if I remember right, delivery was free, and the delivery guys were absolutely excellent. A free tuning was included as well. One other giant selling feature is that Classic Pianos has a trade-in policy. Should I wish to upgrade, I can sell my piano back to them at full price (as long as the piano is in great shape) and apply the money to another piano. I won't be doing this, but it is a wonderful option. So, if you're in the market for a piano, you might want to start here. read more

There is no doubt Classic Pianos has the biggest selection of pianos in Portland. The bargain basement deals allow for those on a small budget to find something too. I found their sale team to be pushy and unprofessional and I chose not to buy my piano from them. Everyone has bad days and maybe that is what happen the day I visited. First off, me and my family have been long time customers of Classic Pianos for the last 20 years. I myself have played for over 15 years and have purchased many pianos from Classic Piano's. Classic Piano's is known for their large selection of used and new pianos which range from uprights to exotic grand pianos. I can't say enough praise for the staff members that work here. In particular, recently I had the pleasure of shopping with Fred Riley. Fred is one of the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable, detail oriented, and caring individuals I have experienced shopping at Classic Pianos. Recently I had been on a mission to find myself an upright piano to put into my new home I had just moved into. I did not have a prior appointment but upon calling Classic Pianos I managed to be fit into the schedule courtesy of Fred Riley. I had explained to him my price range, features, size, and brand that I was looking for in my piano and Fred was mindful to stay within those parameters. From there, Fred proceeded to give me options matching my specifications ranging from the discount basement all the way up to the 'luxury' options. I was then left alone with many options available to me which was very appreciated because I find it difficult to properly access the quality of the piano being watched over. In addition, Fred made sure to regularly check in as well. Although Fred had matched my specifications, the options presented to me didn't quite hit the mark; however, Fred was adamant in finding me a piano that I would fall in love with. He then guided me to a new used piano that had just come into the shop. He stressed to not worry on the price if that was an issue, due to the fact this piano was out of my initial price range I had given, but instead to play the piano to assess the quality to see if it matched what I was looking for. From there I was left alone with the piano and regularly checked on like usual. Immediately from the moment I played the piano I knew that this was exactly what I was looking for. Although the piano was out of my price range, Fred worked his magic and was able to make it fit where the price was only a touch over budget, which I was astonished by given the model I had been playing on. (The price given was quite unheard of). From there, the process was seamless. I was then given options on financing, trading in my old piano for equal exchange that I had previously purchased it for to act as credit towards this new piano, paying the piano in full, or just putting a deposit of my choice dollar amount to complete my purchase. I chose to put down a percentage of my own choosing. One particular concern I did have was I had not fully been moved into my new house when I purchased my piano, and was still debating on whether I wanted to pay the balance in full or to finance. I was concerned if I had to make the decision right then and there, but Fred made sure to stress that there was no rush and to contact Classic Pianos whenever I was ready to decide. I was then given a business card by Fred as well as a personal contact number should I have any pressing matters or concerns regarding the proceedings. It has been three months since my purchase of my 130 Schimmel and I couldn't be happier. The piano has since been paid in full, fully tuned to perfection by Fred Riley himself (free of charge). This is just one story of my experiences at Classic Pianos, but it sure will not be the last. If you are looking for a personal shopping experience where you are not bombarded in a car salesman like fashion and pressured into purchasing a piano, then this is the spot for you. It seemed like piano heaven bu the number of pianos from all over the world. The sales staff is outstanding.
