They advertise walk-ins welcome, but they were not open. The door was closed, but the lights were on. He opened the door. He said he was busy all day. They never answered the phone when I called numerous times. They have no one else working in the shop apparently. I would not go there unless they make an appointment but by that time I've already wasted money going all the way across town because their website says they're open at 9:30am. This is not the type of Barber Shop you can simply stroll up to as you pass through downtown Tampa, or even call and get through. My advice to anyone looking to become a client of Frank's is to be human, patient, polite, and persistent. There is a level of service which Frank works hard to maintain for his clients and if he answered the phone or door for everyone who wants to see behind the locked door, that level of service would be compromised. Horrible service. I sat in front of the shop and knocked on the door during business hours and the owner would not open the door. Prior to showing up I called 5 times in a row within 15 minutes and the barber or owner would not answer the phone. Upon pulling up I knocked on the door and was given no entry. I pushed on the door as to enter and nothing came of that either. After sitting in front of the shop for another 10 minutes a man walks up to the door and is buzzed in without knocking. This place used to be called the Twigg's St. Barber shop. Once upon a time I got kicked out of there by the very strange former owner and thus wrote a negative review. The place has changed names to Artisan's Edge and is now owned by Frank Leyva, a master barber with 25 years of experience. His experience definitely shows. The place has changed for the better in many ways. I went there for a shave and ended up getting a haircut as well because he was doing such a good job. Frank is great at keeping his customers relaxed with his funny stories and he is quick and accurate with a straight razor. That and you get to lay back in a hundred year old barber chair. Pretty great way to slow down your day. I really couldn't ask for a better grooming experience. Go to Frank if you want get your beard and your hair done right. He is the best for sure. read more

Amazing one-man operation in the heart of downtown! Frank is a genius with a pair of scissors. Seriously, your hand will cramp up just at the thought of his non-stop cutting style. He is one of those very meticulous people that wants everything to look just perfect, and he will continue to wander around your head and check it out from every angle until it does. This is not one of those budget barber shops, but please know that you are getting what you pay for. It's not as expensive as a salon, but perhaps a bit more than your average barber shop. Frank has perfected his art. Since it's just him, you don't have to worry about whether or not you'll be able to walk in and get "the good guy". You'll always have the good guy. Always. It's best to make an appointment as he's usually booked solid, but sometimes you can duck in and grab a seat. Frank provides the sort of attention that seems lost these days. You could easily imagine him giving you top-notch service as he poured you a $100 glass of scotch. He even dresses the part. I could only imagine that this is how a barber shop felt in the 1920's or so. It doesn't hurt that Frank is pretty funny, too. He has told me some very amusing stories and occasionally said things to catch me off guard: "Hey, Frank, I was thinking of shaving my head." "I don't think that's a good idea. I just went down to Artisan's Edge this afternoon after getting off of work to get my haircut and it was the most relaxing experience I've had getting my haircut in a long time. From the moment I walked in the door I was immediately transported back to my childhood as this shop is setup like a barbershop should be, everything from the barber chairs to the furniture. This is the place to get your haircut. Frank is truly a professional barber and a master of his craft, unfortunately such quality is a rarity in today's age. Frank is a very talented Master Barber and did an outstanding job on both my haircut and shave. He cut my hair like he has been seeing me for years and it was my first time. He truly has a gift and doe a very thorough job. He even gave me an old school fade that I have not seen in years as it requires a bit extra time. There is no question that it is one of the best haircuts I have ever received. Next to the shave which I couldn't resist. I have very thick facial hair and I shave every day but Frank gave me shave for the ages. He took his time and even let the folks waiting know that it takes time to do this right so please be patient. My face was as smooth as it could ever be and not one cut, razor burn or anything, what a fantastic experience. Going to the Artisan's Edge is more than just getting a haircut. It's stepping into another time zone say 1920 or so. I'm a musician in musical theater and any of you that know Sweeney Todd, well Pirelli is who is cutting your hair. He dresses like Pirelli, he has a slight accent albeit not an Italian one but close! The shop is very tastefully decorated in early 20th century. Then there's the haircut. This Master Barber takes his work seriously and you will get a seriously good haircut. how do i begin?! Frank has not only been my families Master barber for almost 15 years, hes family. My father and frank go way back and i have been sitting in the chair receiving nothing short of masterpieces with Frank since i was 7-8 years old and what frank offers is far from just a haircut. Frank is a VERY BUSY Barber and typically only has a set number of clients he possesses. He is APPOINTMENT ONLY due to the sheer volume of customers as well as the limited amount of time in the day for about 5-7 client give or take. (if he could cut everyones hair who came through trust me HE WOULD!) Frank truly does his very best to get people in on his books but once youre in youre IN so persistence and planning ahead is KEY! This isn't a normal barbershop- it's a relationship, an exclusive club that is not open to the public. You must earn your spot in his chair. Frank gives the best and expects the best- there are no walk-ins, no one timers, and if you waffle he won't take you back. Cheating is not tolerated and you need not cheat because there is no one else giving you the cut that this guy gives. If you call for an appointment as a new client, you need to sell yourself as you would to a new employer- he doesn't need your business, you need his service. Went to this barber shop for the first time today after walking by many times at lunch in downtown Tampa. This is the definition of old school, which is what I have been looking for. The barber (and owner) Frank did a fantastic job on my haircut, which included a shampoo, a neck trim with a straight razor and a scalp massage. He was very friendly while not being overly talkative, which I appreciate. The location is also very convenient for downtown workers, and right next to a cobbler's shop where you can get a great shoe shine. read more
