I love this art supply store. Honestly, my favorite for many reasons: staff are helpful, merchandise is great and prices are very reasonable. I'm only upset that they are moving over to Industry City in the summer. I won't be able to walk over with my daughter as easy but I absolutely love this store. A big complaint is they are always out of stretcher bars in the sizes I need and they are very disorganized. I am often in a hurry and thought I was buying two 12" and two 10" and later realized I bought three 12" and one 11". The staff are very friendly but I'm done shopping here. read more

I'm from Maine and I shopped at the original Artist & Craftsman store for years-- I've been so happy to find that the Brooklyn location offers the same level of warmth and kind customer service! Taylor and Abdiel helped me find some leather paints this week, Bryn and another associate (whose name is escaping me, sorry) helped me with spray paint/acrylics recently as well. Everyone was so patient and they never make me feel annoying for asking advice about the products. I will keep coming back, because the experience reminds me of home :) also the music always slaps. 10/10 read more

I have always found great art supplies, big selection of paper, excellent coloring books, interesting crafts.

Worker owned business with a great selection of Silkscreen Supplies, including quality squeegees, hinges, aluminum frames and Speedball inks for textiles/paper and other substrates. They have the supplies we need almost all the time we need them, which can be difficult for a retail store competing against online warehouses. The staff is always friendly and helpful. We recommend them first over the other NYC art retailers. read more

This would receive a "great" except for the fact it has needed to cut back on their stock since losing a considerable area on 2nd floor. For instance, they now do not have square watercolor pads that I use, and only recently square readymade frames have returned to the shelves. The customer service is great, it has good quality supplies, and is comfortable to shop in. read more

The store is bigger than it seems. They even have an upstairs and also a back area full of different supplies. .They don't just have drawing and painting supplies , they even have craving and different clays (which are the two things i love working with) The prices are really cheap compared to other supply stores I've been to. While the price are good , when they have holiday sales they are AWESOME!! and even cheaper. The staffs are super nice too and that is a plus for me. So I will deff come to this place for my crafting needs. read more

I often frequent YELP for the reviews, which are really helpful...as for posting my own, well...I haven't done that as much. But this time I couldn't help myself. While most of these reviews are great as as always, a few rubbed me the wrong way...I found them not only biased, but bordering on cruel (yeah, RACHEL K., I'm talking to you). Commenting on the customer service is one thing, but flat out insulting the employees on a personal level? Especially when we are talking about a place that feels like my second home and people who always brighten my day. I LOVE Artist & Craftsman in East Williamsburg and stock up on supplies there at least three times a week...and beyond the fact that the place is the best priced art supply in town (I've tried them all), the employees are what really makes it special. The employees of Artist & Craftsman are the coolest, most genuine people in Williamsburg. True, I'm more of a crafter than artist, but they've never act dismissively of me...the opposite, actually. They've spent hours answering my (sometimes silly) questions, offering insight into supplies, asking about my various projects (even sillier) and generally being authentic, amazing people. A lot of them are trained working artists whose knowledge and dedication to their job reflects their passion...I don't know what I'd do without this place! I'm eternally appreciative to have it right around the corner from my apartment. read more

I am giving 5 stars because customer service is EXCELLENT. Adbul will direct you in anything that you need for your arts needs. There is a wide variety of products, he was even telling me about how to strecht my own canvas and volunteer to help me in anything I did, can't get any better than this right? well, it does. The store has almost anything an artist is looking for, this is the Meca home for Artist. What else can I say, well I visited a big art store in NY, but Artist Craftsman has it all and at cheaper prices too, so why hassle into the city where there is NO parking? I will stick to this lovely Brooklyn Art store. I once took the wrong item, I brought it back to the store with the receipt, I told them I thought it was white paint. This is Pearl Paint revistited. (Before Soho was destroyed by the developers, and artists still lived below Houston St - and Canal St offered job lots of mechanical wonders that I needed for my studio.) This store has everything and LOTS of helpful and experienced staff. The staff are all artists/owners and many are long term employees. Good prices, convenience, dog friendly, and a block from my house. Well designed space and short walk to the L train and the B24 and B43 busses. Did I luck out?!!!! read more

Ah to be young and bored. Must be hard to pretend you give two sh**s when you spend most of the day contemplating what your next tattoo might be or when Arcade Fire is going to release a new album. I suppose I shouldn't be so harsh. Some of the people who work here (mainly the guys I've noticed) are pretty friendly. But the other half not so much. However it's not like anyone is rude and it's the only art store in the area so it's a great little gem to have in the hood. Whether you're making that Oprah-inspired vision board or just repainting an old piece of furniture, this is the place to go. To the ladies here who have all the personality of a sock, (think April in Parks and Rec) it's really not that bad. Are you a child soldier? Were you sold in sexual slavery? I was hanging out at Cafe Grumpy this past Sunday morning, and as I was sitting there I started writing out a new idea for an art project I had been mulling around in my head for a couple days. I created a list of supplies that I definitely need (as well as some other things I'm out of), and started Google'ing from my Blackberry to find a nearby art supply store. Still being new to New York, the only place I could think of off the top of my head, was Pearl, in Manhattan. Well, who wants to trek in to Manhattan for art supplies? Don't get me wrong, I love Pearl... but I had a funny feeling there were probably some really nice, locally owned art supply stores in Brooklyn (or more specifically, Williamsburg). Boy was I glad I found this place. They were the closest store to me, from Cafe Grumpy, that was actually open on Sunday. They're conveniently located on Manhattan Ave, which makes it easy to get to from different parts of Brooklyn, and puts them fairly close to the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway), which means it's easy for Queens residents, or even Manhattanites to access. From the moment I walked in, I felt at home. The people there were friendly AND helpful (what a strange combination in today's retail world). Sometimes when you ask for help in an art supply store, you get a cold shoulder from a snooty artist... or, in the case of big chains, you might get a dense moron who knows absolutely nothing about the products their employer sells. That's not the case with Art & Craftsman Supply. They're staff are knowledgeable, eager to help, and are friendly enough to actually work with you to help get you on the right track. With a little help, I was able to find the things I needed quickly. Moreover, when I asked technical questions about how things work together (paints/markers/ink and mediums like paper or acetate) they were not only able to clarify things, but they actually completely helped steer me in the right direction, based on how I described my project. I'll be back many times over, I'm sure. When I was ready to pay, they already had nearly everything rung up in advance (I was piling things up on the counter as I went). They also took the time to carefully wrap up my new brushes, and roll up the sheets of acetate I bought. If ANYONE in New York City is in need of art or craftsman supplies, I HIGHLY recommend "Art & Craftsman Supply" in Williamsburg/Brooklyn, NY. You won't be sorry, and you just might be pleasantly surprised like I was! read more

Really great customer service. We called ahead to see if they had the canvas size we needed in stock, but instead of dismissing us with a negative, they actually went and checked. Turns out, there was a small, secret stash of 36x36 leftover from a sale AND they gave us that same sale price from months ago. A+, guys. If you live in Brooklyn and dread going to the insanity of Canal Street to go to Pearl, this is the second best place around. Good selection, stuff is kept in stock and the people are helpful and nice. That alone is more than most places in NYC. Your other option for art supplies in Brooklyn is the Pratt (student) store that is open to all. It also has a decent selection but the costs were higher than A & C when I compared the price of 1. a five pack of exacto blades, 2. a block of super sculpey; and 3. a metal 15" ruler, all three the exact same item and brand. There's not a lot of art supply stores beyond Pratt in Clinton Hill and this one here kind of where Williamsburg, East Williamsburg and Greenpoint converge. read more

They have great prices and sales, and a wide selection of products! I wish they would offer more linen canvases, however, and a wider range of large canvases and oversize brushes. I also wish they had a wider range of bristle oil brushes (like Isabey brand), and more clay equipment. All the salespeople are super nice, and very helpful (except there is one tall, curly-haired lady that is not so friendly). I am in here every week or every other week, and it is mostly always a good experience. read more

I went into this place for the first time today, even though I've lived in the neighborhood for over a year. It had a great vibe to it. Very mellow, all of the employees seemed to be happy, not stressed, and had a smile on. I brought my dog in, too, and he was greeted with smiles, back scratches, and was even offered a treat (that he rudely declined. Silly pup.) Prices are decent. Typical of any art store in the city. I don't know prices of the leading art stores, like Utrecht, off the top of my head, but this place probably beats their prices. They have all kinds of stuff from the high quality artist materials, to basic beginner items, to kid crafts. I think this place definitely wins my favorite art store award. I'll for sure be back. We trek'd to Artist and Craftsman Supply because I needed art supplies on a Sunday afternoon and they are open until 7! Most places are closed or close at 6 on Sundays. They are well supplied, the service was good, and they are close to the L train. I would def shop there again because I'm not much for huge stores like Pearl. However, they lost one start for being out of a particular size paper I needed. read more

100th Review. Silly me. I actually ordered art supplies from this chain store online as it's main branch is based in Portland, Maine. I never knew they had a branch right in NY until I saw the "sales tax" on my online receipt. Doh! The store is larger than it looks and the staff has always been helpful and friendly. You can also find items here that Pearl Paint does not carry. On my most recent visit, they were out of stock of something I was looking for but offered to call me when the item was back in stock. If you ever do order online, the delivery by UPS is just a few days. They have the lowest prices on aluminum portfolio hard cases btw. I never had a reason to take the L train into Williamsburg before but have now made the trip to this Brooklyn outpost several times now. I love this place, everyday that I walk by I have to control myself from going inside. They have pretty much everything you'd need plus some. Don't forget to go upstairs, when I first started coming here I didn't realize they had the entire upstairs full of paper and misc supplies. I love the sales they have, $2 paints can't get better than that even if I hate oil paints, they always have something in the front for some killer deal so even on those days my wallets a little lite I can come here and give whatever it is a whirl. Great prices, if I'm heading into Manhattan I always pick it up here as I know it'll be almost half the price. If you need anything in the ways of arts and crafts you will find it here. Everything I need and just 1 block from the 7 train. Minutes form Manhattan. Much better than the chain stores. Reminds me of good ole Pearl Paint on Canal Street. Helpful knowledgeable staff. Huge space, just fun to wander about. Beware you may end up buying more than you planned because they have so much great art supplies, as well as fun gifty items, too.
