When I told my friend from Nepal that I got my pens from Muji, she burst into laughter. Turns out, "Muji" means something quite different (and not exactly flattering) in her language. But hey, cultural quirks aside, I love Muji! This particular Muji is alright. You can find just about anything you need, but I have to admit, I prefer the one in Manhattan. The Manhattan location has more floors, which means more to explore. This one feels like the CliffsNotes version of that Muji, with a smaller diffuser section and a more sparse clothing selection, though still substantial. Overall, this Muji is a solid spot for your minimalist needs, just not as expansive as its Manhattan counterpart. For that, I'll place my funky Yelp star at the "Good" indicator.

"I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so" (The Vapors) Ever hear of Muji? I hadn't until a few days ago when we saw one while wandering through Williamsburg Brooklyn. Now I've learned the chain was founded in Japan in 1980, and they sell a huge variety of household goods, kitchenware, health and beauty aids, writing supplies (think pads and colorful gel pens), clothing, and food. There are over 1,000 MUJI stores on Planet Earth that sell over 7,000 items! They're named after the Japanese phrase "Mujirushi Ryohin" which roughly translates into "no-brand quality goods." They sell No Frills, simple, utilitarian stuff. So don't expect to see any fancy pants pretentious logo endorsed brands here. They have their own minimalist spin on marketing and consumerism, replacing "This is what I really want" with "This will do." We had a blast wandering through the store and I walked out with a nice blue plaid flannel shirt for $20 and a Hot and Sour soup mix for $6. Now I'm a fan!

There's a lot of bad reviews for Muji Williamsburg and I wish I listened and went somewhere else. I went to Muji giving them the benefit of the doubt and was lied to and stollen from. On Saturday the 7th I brought my bff who's never been to muji and bought lots of favs including an on sale item an item that was on the clearance rack. There was a bunch of pj tops (on sale because there was no matching bottom and the color and fabric was last season) on the rack and so I picked a light blue one. The rack said all items on this rack received an extra 40% off! Score! I made my purchases and we went on to a long day of being a tourist. BUT when I got home I realized Muji charged the full amount for the pajama top as if it was a set of pajamas and no extra discount. Ok so they made a mistake, mistakes happen. I think maybe I would catch it if the screen had an itemized display but their display is small, lags and is difficult to see for someone with disabilities. On Sunday, my last day of the trip, I called them up to see what could be done. I had a birthday party to go to and ABSOLUTELY no time to go back to the store. They said the only way to fix it was to physically come into the store with the card. :( This is so disappointing! What if I had already left the state? They found my receipt, knew what went wrong and told me they would fix it no problem right when I got there so I wouldn't have to wait in line. They also told me I didn't have to bring in the shirt which was nice because I didn't want to carry the pajama shirt everywhere I went. This is pretty upsetting because that means if I have flew back home and realizes what happened, they would have just stolen 34 bucks from me. Having to come into the store also meant I would miss the first hour of the party, but it was the only option because sorry, I'm not a millionaire and can't afford something that should be 20 dollars and pay the full price of 54 for a sale item. I get there and the person who I talked to on the phone her name started with a V was ready to help me. But then she said that I couldn't get the addition 40% off discount. I thought this was weird. It was on the rack. And it was upsetting because not only did they make a mistake, not be able to fix it over the phone, meaning I had to take the subway an HOUR to get to the store, be late to the party, I was also now being lied to and scammed. So they brought out another manager, I was relieved, but then he wouldn't tell me his name which I thought was really strange. He asked me to go in front of the desk so now I couldn't see the computer screen. The manager became really confrontational saying that the pajama top was in the wrong spot and couldn't get an extra discount. He continued to say it wasn't his fault the pajama top was in the wrong area. But as a shop keeper it actually IS his responsibility to put items where they belong and label them correctly. It was not my responsibility as a customer. I've been a manager of a retail store before and honestly I've seen it all -and this was a really easy fix. And I was upset because they refused to be empathic at all. But being a manager in the past, I didn't scream, throw things, or call names cause that's unacceptable. Still this managers, only response was to police my tone saying that if I was nice he would have helped me. I can't help but wonder that if I was not a woman of color, I probably would have been treated differently. He took zero responsibility or accountability for his actions and had no empathy what so ever. He refused to call his manager or give me his name or give me his managers name. Which again, suspicious. He said the best he could do was give me 20% off the sale price which was 50% off (because again it was half of a pajama set) so 70% off -Fine. I am still being scammed -it should be 40% off as advertised but I said fine because I didn't want to spend any more time being berated. I told him the only name I had was the name on the receipt the first person who made the mistake a woman who's name started with A and I didn't think it was fair for them to be responsible for his actions -then he told me his name was "Saul" and was the "visuals manager". I took a picture of him because who knows if that's really his name but not posting here out of decency. On my flight back looked at the receipt to write all this and "Saul" only did the return with the 50% off price and only 10% off instead of 20 that he promised. He lied to my face. It makes sense why he was so secretive about his name. He was clearly doing something wrong and knew it and enjoyed lying, arguing and tone policing a woman of color. People deserve better than this. There were so many opportunities to make it right and instead it was more important to Muji to rip off the customer than have integrity. Muji if you are ok as a business with your employees treating people like this then shame on you.

Good location of this Japanese chain. This is a great place for basics and well designed organizing supplies. The luggage looks very sturdy also. It can get crowded on the weekends so beware.

I love coming to Muji to get their stationeries. You can sign up for their email or text and get a 10% off their full price items. The staffs in this store are very friendly.

I must admit Nordstrom organizes their jewelry well. All the boxes were neatly displayed on their shelves. Just the bad thing is the top shelf is very high and you need assistance or a ladder to look at them so that sucks. This is one of the most organized stores ever with all the accessories lined up and stored in an orderly fashion. There are rarely any loose accessories or misplaced product in the store. Made the shopping vibe feel a lot better. It is also very clean and carpet is nice to walk on without any dirt or loose garbage. By the checkout, there are aisles of mini and travel size lotions and facial cleansers from Kiehl's and Clinique that are almost winding down so they are that popular! I thought the cashiers were kind of slow because there were 3 of them working on the customers when there were so many cashier registers available for employees to go to. I wish they open more registers so the long line can go faster.

Many department stores have sadly faded away over the years. Think, B. Altman & Co, Barneys, Henri Bendels, Lord & Taylor, Bonwit Teller, I miss them all like old friends who passed. However, we still have Macy's! - with its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade aired on NBC, plus don't forget Macy's lush Fresh Flower Show display in April/May, and the ultimate 4th of July Fireworks on the Hudson River or East River by the Grucci family over 100 years, now by Jesse Collins Entertainment of the Superbowl halftime shows. There will always be Macy's. Make Macy's your destination even if it's just for the nostalgia. I will start out by saying that I was never a fan of Marshall's. That is until I found this one…read moreglorious example of what every Marshall's should model themselves after! I have only known of this Marshall's location for about the last 2 years. You'd never think a Marshall's would be there. On Washington Street across from One World Trade and a block away from the water by Battery Park City. I only noticed this because I was headed to the Battery Park Regal. I had some time before my movie so I figured I'd kill some time. I wasn't terribly excited because I never had a good Marshall's experience, but I digress. This location is two floors down deep which kills cell service so if youre waiting for any important calls, you won't get them! I cant express how highly impressed I was with everything about this Marshall's. From the items in stock to the cleanliness and the layout, to the selection and the very friendly associates. 2 big floors. The first floor has women's and children's clothing, shoes, holiday items, and health/beauty items. The floor down has men's clothing, pet supplies and household items. A few times a year they have big clearance events. Each department will have their own separate clearance shelves. I've found some GREAT deals during those huge sales. I've found a few different Kate Sommerville cleansers, that are normally $30, for only $10 or $12. Even when they dont have these big events, they always have the clearance sections. I always make a beeline directly to them. Especially the beauty section. I love how they group and display the beauty items in separate colors. Very pleasing to the eye. They have Nars, Anastasia, etc. makeup for awesome prices. I even get my Secret Clinical deodorant for only $6 here. Lots of clothing variety as well. Lots of my favorite brands like Michael Kors and Lucky Brand. Gotten so many cute items here. Got a $110 Michael Kors burgundy hoodie here for only $28 on clearance. Got an Abercrombie sweater for only $8! A decent sized plus-sized section. Spacious and clean dressing rooms. So many different candles. Got the best ever non-stick ceramic pan. The pantry section is surprisingly great. Found so many great new snacks here. Awesome pet section, too. Again, especially in the clearance section! I've done A LOT of damage here. They have cashiers on both floors but mostly just the ones on the upstairs level are ever open. The line could get long at times but they do go pretty fast. Theyre CONSTANTLY asking if you want to sign up for theit credit card. One day I'm going to spill the beans and tell them that I'm very irresponsible when it comes to shopping so stop asking me to sign up for that! I feel like I come here at least once a week. I'll be there tomorrow! My favorite days are hitting up Gong Cha, shopping at Marshall's, going to the Regal down the block and then sitting by the river. Thats my zen place.

There are signs as you enter that they are remodeling, and while this is true, there are areas that were not being remodeled that definitely needed some TLC, such as the entry area that looked like it hadn't been cleaned since before COVID. The store is multiple levels and probably the largest Marshall's I've ever been to, though the layout of the building makes navigating a bit tricky in some instances, such as the L-shaped men's area. Staff were nonexistent as we navigated the store and were barely present for checkout as well. We did find a couple things and took advantage of the no sales tax on clothing in New York, too!
