I went to Artistry in Hanover for the very first time today and could not be happier with my experience. Ashley did an amazing job. I have very curly hair and am very particular. I had a bad experience not too long ago at a different salon, and I really needed someone who would treat my hair the way it needed to be. From the moment Ashley started working on my hair she was attentive to my requests, took her time. You could tell she really cared about the job she was doing and cared about my hair. I'm so please with the cut she gave me as I had a boxy look to my curls that I was not happy with. Ashley brought my hair back to life. I love the blonde highlights she put in my hair. The overall experience was great including the customer service. Not to mention the salon is beautiful. I'll only be asking for Ashley from now on. read more

I came here looking for a maintenance cut of my curly hair. My previous stylist had moved away and I was looking for a new person who knew how to cut and style curly hair. I was also about a month overdue for a maintenance cut. When I called to book an appointment, I mentioned all of this to the person who took the call. The wash and cut itself was fine, and my stylist was as nice as could be. They took about 3 inches, which I expected after being overdue for a trim and not having done a bigger chop of my hair in about 9 months. However, the post-cut styling was not great. My stylist let my hair dry out while cutting it, then raked a brush through my half dry hair and then gooped in leave in conditioner, curl cream, and oil serum over it all. My hair looked like I'd stuck my fingers in an outlet when I was done. They said that my hair was so fine that it was drying out really fast while she styled it (to which I wanted to say "then why don't you re-wet it with a spray bottle of water???") I didn't raise a fuss when I saw the final look because I knew the cut was what mattered and I could wash out and restyle it when I got home (which I did, and my hair came out just fine). However, the fact that I didn't come away with defined curls that were properly styled (which I had when I came in, more or less) and the fact that the stylist thought that the frizzy, brushed out curly hair was a good look to send me away with tells me a lot. To be clear: I'm not a professional stylist, and I'm aware that this was my first time in this salon and with this stylist, which is why I'm not trying to be harsh. However, I know my hair and I've been in the chair of stylists who know what curly hair needs to be properly styled. I just don't think Artistry is a good match for me. While Ashley was an amazing hairstylist and was genuinely one of the sweetest people I've ever met; her services proved otherwise. I enjoyed my time there and for years have been eagerly desiring a perm. I took a video the day off so excited to show off my curly hair and it showed!! However, the very next day it seemed to disappear (Have video to prove). I continually took photos and surely and fast the curls seemed to disappear. My sister and best friend called you all to discuss the matter who instructed me to reach out to Ashley with my availability to get it re-done free of charge. I messaged Ashley via instagram but she failed to respond. She simply looked and has yet to respond. I'm now $190 dollars less with a perm that is non-existent. I would not recommend this location to anyone if you expect results to occur longer than a day. read more

Prices were reasonable and they follow an appointment-only policy due to COVID. I had an appointment with Sarah. She's very outgoing, easy to talk to and energetic. I made an appointment online through their messaging service and had email correspondence with Kristin (?). I got a v-cut trim and it cost $45. They said price starts at $45 but can go up depending on the length of your hair. My haircut included a blow dry and shampoo. I really liked that Sarah knew just what I wanted and suggested adding more layers. I love the layers and the way it frames my face (as Sarah said they would do). I feel like I am channeling my inner early 2000s Jennifer Anniston. I would have liked for the V-Cut in the back to be a little more dramatic but overall it looks great and I am satisfied with the price and results. I was most impressed by the interior space of this hair salon. It was two stories and had a really modern/fun feel. One downside to their location is that you have to pay for street parking (I paid a dollar for 45 minutes). Inside, they offer you coffee/snacks/other drinks. read more

Okay. I'm a little late in the game on my review, but better late than never! I first called another salon in the area first, but they had 0 availability, nothing. I called artistry and spoke to Jordan who was very pleasant and accommodating. He even worked me into the schedule a little early because I would have ran late otherwise. Major plus! Jordan scheduled me with Ashley for a blow out and airbrush makeup for my baby shower. When I arrived to the salon ashley was running just a little late. Cool. No big deal. I was pregnant at the time and truly, I didn't mind settling in. I was not even in my seat waiting for her before I was offered snacks, coffee, sparkling water. Which I thought was awesome. Ashley arrived, she was the sweetest!! I was very impressed with how she spoke to me and treated me. She and I talked the entire time about where we lived, the baby shower, etc. she didn't share much about her unless I asked. (which is nice, because some stylist I feel tell me their entire life story, usually negative and who really wants to hear that?) She did an amazing job with my blow out, I have yet to find anyone who can compare or replicate what she did. My make up was absolutely flawless. It did not move until I washed it off that night. I felt like a beautiful pregnant goddess rather than the raggedy whale I usually feel like. If I ever move back home to New York, artistry in Hanover will have a client for life! I am new to the area and decided to try out this salon based on the good reviews to change up my hair for the first time in a while. My hair has been box dyed black for about three years and I made sure that the salon knew in advance because I know how difficult it can be to remove black box dye. I decided to go dark red with a few black strands. I was told that they could dye my hair red with no problem in 1 appointment, which I was thrilled at, thinking it would take at least 2 appointments. When my stylist started to bleach my hair, I noticed that she was leaving more than half of my hair black, which is not what I asked for (I made it clear I wanted the majority of my hair red). I decided to see how it would turn out because she was the stylist and maybe she knew what would look better. After she put the bleach on, she left and went downstairs. After about 10 minutes, the bleach started to drip onto my shirt, ruining both the front and back. My appointment was at night and I was the only customer there so there was no one else upstairs. I finally got the attention of another stylist to get the bleach to stop dripping and rinse my hair. After applying the red, I thought it looked good, until I left the salon and returned to my hotel. I noticed that there was a lot more red on top than on the bottom and it looked incredibly uneven. Over the next 6 days, I washed my hair twice, leaving over 48 hours in between washes as recommended. All of the red dye washed out of my hair, leaving an orangey-blonde color in chunky streaks. I attempted to call back and get a refund, since I paid $195 and had all the dye wash out of my hair in 2 washes and less than 1 week. I was told that I couldn't have my money back, but I could come in and have something else done for free, but not red as it would take more than 1 appointment. I had lost my trust in this salon and decided against going back in. Based on the reviews I read, I was very optimistic to try this salon. After my experience, I was very disappointed. read more

it was my first time ever dying my hair so I decided to look up the reviews for hair salons and decided here .. I wanted a caramel balayage , I did not get that. I know that my hair is very close to black in color so some of my hair might be brassy the first appointment . I knew that coming in. That isn't the issue. The issue is that I didn't get a caramel balayage . I got highlights instead. My hair is not blended but rather streaky. Was very disappointed. Furthermore I asked for a hair cut for curtain bangs and it was cut wayyy too short that they can't go behind my ear which I wanted and indicated but no. Also the bangs aren't filling enough. Furthermore I also asked for long and multiple layers but didn't receive this as well just cut off two inches of my hair , not what I asked . read more

I'm going to try to not get emotional about my experience. But I had a horrible one. I went in wanting blonde. I had been waiting to go back to blonde for 6 months. My friend is an excellent stylist, but I moved 3 hours away, so, after reading great reviews, I booked to go in here. I was also recovering from Post Partum Depression, and desperately was looking forward to feeling "like myself" again. I went in, and told her what I wanted, and was promptly refused. She refused to do the blonde, stating my hair was too dry on top. I asked for lowlights then in the dry areas (keep in mind this was not my whole head just some bits at the top), again was refused. I almost bawled in the chair. I tried to convey how badly I needed this change. She wouldn't budge. Now, in fairness this review wouldn't be bad had I walked out at this point, which, now that I know, is what I should have done. We sat in awkward silence, me close to bawling. She asked if I wanted baleyage (sp?) and showed me a photo. Blond with long darker roots, I could handle that! Well, nope. It didn't look anything like that, because she refused to do any blonde except a few at the front. So it looked like all one color (light brown) with a few highlights at my forehead. Then I got told it wasn't even permanent dye! I don't know if that makes sense or not, but if I'm being charged...$135 (!!), why on earth would it be semi permanent?? I tried to smile. I tried to like it, but i cried for hours. I felt nothing like myself. I spent way too much on a temporary hairdo that looked nothing like the photo or even what I originally wanted. A few weeks later, I made the road trip to my friend. Not only did she make me blonde, but took a photo of the back of my head. The trim I got was completely crooked!! very very very crooked. Embarrassingly crooked. And I paid...$135! My hair hasn't fallen out or broken off. It's fine, just as I knew it would. I've been blonde basically for 15 years, I know my hair. I feel bad leaving this review, again, if I just left, it wouldn't exist. I didn't call and try to get them to make it right either, which I know doesn't seem fair. But I was too embarrassed about how emotional it made me. However, your stylist should make you happy. When they see you struggling not to cry, they should try and find a solution, not promise you something else and it not be anything like the photo. It looked like I dyed my hair but forgot a few pieces. No bright, lighter ends like this trend is supposed to be about. I'm sure they are very talented, aside from the crooked line in the back (seriously, it was bad). I'm sure many of you will have amazing results. I guess this review is more of a warning - if they tell you they won't do what you want, or if they try to sell you on a trend you aren't sure of, just walk out. Save your money. It's way to expensive to pay for something you don't love. I still can't believe I willingly paid that much for temporary dye! Although I'm glad it wasn't permanent now, it feels like such a waste! Lesson learned. The more high end does not mean better. I paid less than half of what I paid there and have the hair I love and looks beautiful (and healthy). I hope you fair better than me! They had no idea how important it was that I felt like myself that day, I wish they understood how much of a setback that was to me, I wish they'd have been more in touch with what I was saying. I appreciate the care in not wanting to "fry" my hair, but I felt it was more to protect their reputation now. I wish they had just done what I asked and waited 6 months to do. I just moved to syracuse a few months ago and I've since been struggling to find a hair dresser that can live up to my hair dresser in boston (see Wendy Rapoza's salon if you are visiting) ~ who made me believe in the power of a good hair cut. After trying a few places (ie about half of the hair salons in syracuse) I finally had a haircut that impressed me! Laura was my hairdresser. She let me reminisce a bit about my lost Boston hairdresser for a while before I described all the nuances of my unruly hair. It is that wavy, in between, hair that can turn into a poofy triangle mess in the wrong hands. I needed someone who wasn't afraid to cut away at my hair relentlessly with reckless abandon in order to tame my tortured tresses. Laura worked on my hair for 1 1/2, carefully sculpting it, blow drying it, and making fine adjustments..until she was finally happy with the end product.... and so was I! She REALLY listened to what I wanted and I really respect that in a world of sometimes stubborn hairdressers who coif in THEIR way without regard to YOUR personal style. I will definitely return, hoping to make Artistry in Hanover my hair haven in the 'cuse. read more

as a curly gal, i realized something today. there seem to be two schools of thought with curly cuts: some snip with dry hair, and others clip with wet hair. I guess devacurl cuts are done dry. this probably works for some, but my best cuts to date have always been on wet hair. this place boasts their deva-curl training so.... if you don't think this approach works for you, you might want to skip artistry. I came today, described what i wanted, and left with something pretty different. After my hair was washed and re-dried, the final product left much to be desired (a tad too short and with too much volume). i might come back and try again (and will be more adamant about what I want) or might try a different salon... let's see how this grows out read more

Where to begin? I have owed Kristi this review for a long time: I'm the type of client who is picky/demanding as hell - but I'm also not normally the type to write reviews. I just go, get a haircut, and if it's great, then I come back. I did that for two years while living in Ithaca, driving an hour each way to keep going back and getting hair cuts I loved. From the first time I got a cut with Kristi, it was great. Not 'nice old lady from upstate New York' great either, which is what another reviewer seems to imply. I'm 32, I've lived on three continents, and I (in my not so humble opinion) know how to skirt the line between sexy/glam and just conservative enough to get away with in the business world. So no, it's not 1992 on my head. Kristi totally gets me, even though I drive her crazy with cutting into it dry until it's exactly the way I envisioned it. I didn't realize how rare it would be to find someone else of her caliber until I moved to NYC, the supposed fashion capital of the world. She fixed my hair after the first disastrous $100+ cut from a pretentious Soho salon. (I drove 2 hours out of my way on a trip from Ithaca for it - if that's any indication of how much trust I have in her). Now, I just got what would have been another $100 cut from a different (but equally pretentious) salon (I didn't pay because I walked out in tears looking like I just got a cut form a beauty-school dropout) - and I'm praying she has time in her schedule to fix it. Color is great too, and Kristi really takes time to make sure you love your look. She's kinda a momma bear character: half the time she gives me a dirty look and a sigh, but she makes it great. It's the complete opposite of what I've encountered elsewhere: youngish hipster stylists who all want to be your friend and make you feel as cool as them, but at the end of the day, they have no business putting scissors in their hands. Long story short: great salon, extremely talented owner. There is absolutely no point paying double or triple their prices elsewhere - you will NOT get a better or more consistent cut than you get here. read more

Nice, thin highlights and a fashionable cut for cheap! This place could easily exist in a big city and charge at least twice as much for their services. With the lack of other "big city" amenities in the area, it's nice to know that you can come here for great service. Antonietta was my stylist and she had a very customized approach, keeping me involved the whole way. Everytime I go back home to the Upstate area I will try to incorporate a visit here. After moving to Syracuse from CA about year ago, I am so happy to have finally found a good salon after unsuccessfully trying a few others in the area. I had the same hairdresser in CA for about 8 years, so I was really bummed about having to find a new one. Thankfully, I found Jess. I have come here a few times at this point, initially for color and eventually for a cut as well. My color always comes out wonderful, and I have been very happy with my haircut. I completely trust Jess with my hair, which is a big thing for me. I like the vibe of the salon, as it is friendly, relaxed and not pretentious. I can't say enough good about Jennifer. I showed her pictures of what I'd like and she did exactly what I asked for and I'm so happy. She is really fun to talk to and we did a lot of laughing. I have really thick hair and it took three hours to do my coloring, but it went by really fast because there was no awkwardness. I've been going to Artistry for about two years now and never have I ever been treated with such disrespect and unprofessionalism. *I would like to make a point that this review is not about the stylists. I've seen one stylist the bulk of the time and she is incredibly patient with me and understands my needs when it comes to my hair* So with that said, the owner is my concern. I was denied service after a stylist who I don't usually see toned my hair too much and I asked to have it stripped and reapplied (noting that I'd pay of course). The owner called me and was very rude and dismissive of what I needed. I've been trying to gradually lighten my ends the past few months and as anyone with dark hair trying to go blonde knows it's hard to find that right balance between brassy and ashy. I also went through chemotherapy a year ago which changed the components of my hair. So this was the first time I've tried lightening since then. My stylist knew this and was amazing with helping me in the lightening process. If the toner made me more brassy or ashy she'd retone me and I'd happily tip her 30-40% After getting my hair toned and it coming out with greyish green ends I was shocked that the owner would deny me service to correct what a stylist did. Telling me "we aren't the salon for you", "you've seen two stylists and aren't happy." And essentially leaving me in the lurch with a poor tone job. I could see doing this if someone is looking for free services but I always pay for my hair and if for some reason I don't because they shouldn't charge you for a colour CORRECTION I would always tip my stylist. Whoever goes here I warn you to not mention any issues with your hair. Because God for bid someone makes a mistake and they have to correct it, the owner will turn you away and and be very condescending. Like I said this review is not against the stylists. I understand that it takes time to get a desired look. That's why I've been paying $150 the past three months to get my hair to look a certain way so I don't see what the problem is when I called to go back in to get what I paid for. How dare I ask a business to provide a service that I am paying what some people say is too much money for. What I was asking for was not unreasonable. If you pay that much money for a service you should expect to get what you came in for. Instead I was turned away, was given "professional" advice that I didn't ask for, and was disrespected when I tried to explain why my hair reacts differently to chemicals since chemotherapy. Her attitude and responses were so unprofessional that I actually started to tear up on the phone just because of pure shock. Please be mindful when going to this place. The stylists are great but they are being led by a woman who clearly needs to go back to school and learn in business 101 that the customers come first. read more

Unfortunately only one star for this salon. First impressions are important. The day before my appointment, I received a text that my wedding hair and make up test appointment was for 9:30AM with Ashley. I then called to double confirm 9:30AM with her. The next morning (the morning of my Bridal Shower), I arrived at Artistry at 9:20. The door was locked but a stylist was running in and let me in the door. She told me to have a seat, and that Ashley should be in shortly. I waited. 9:32. 9:46. 9:51. At that point I started getting annoyed. Another stylist, Taylor came in to take her appointment at 10. I told her I had been waiting a half hour. She called Ashley and left a message. Five minutes later, Ashley called back saying that she thought my appointment was at 10, and she was on her way. 10AM passes, 10:08. 10:14. 10.20. Finally Ashley busts though the backdoor. I am stunned she even decided to show. I was about to grab my bag and leave. She put down her things and came up to me. She said that she thought my appointment was later. If she thought my appointment was at 10, she was still 20 minutes late for it. She has to get all of her supplies out. It took a lot for me to stay there. Then at 11:50 (ten minutes before my bridal shower began) I was finished with hair and makeup. Ashley knew what she was doing- great job on hair and make up, but I cannot give Artistry my business or the business of my entire bridal party on my wedding day. I cannot trust Artistry. Ashley charged me for the entire amount of the appointment even though SHE was an HOUR late. I paid. I should have said NO. I will be calling to speak to the owner on Monday. Artistry, it's not okay to treat clients that way. I paid $145 dollars to be late for my Bridal Shower. Ashley, you're not a bad stylist, but after having the day to think it over, it's not okay how you handled the situation. Very bad business at Artistry in Hanover. read more
