Sorry Yelp engineering team-- I think that 5 stars might not be enough for Hairanoia. I was lucky enough to be able to schedule an appointment last minute, presumably due to a cancellation. Note that many of the stylists, especially the owner Michael, tend to book out for months. The online booking system was super simple to navigate, and gave me text updates. My appointment was in the evening, which in itself is a major plus. About an hour before my scheduled time, Michael called me and told me he could accommodate me 45 minutes earlier, which was a major plus. The shop was popping when I arrived-- phones ringing, customers popping in, even though it was the evening. The decor is really charming. Lots of interesting artwork and knick-knacks to catch the eye. When Michael asked, "what are we doing today?" I told him the color I wanted and he took the reins from there, which I appreciated, because I'm not the kind of person who goes to salons very often. Later in the appointment, he also asked if he could do a certain cut he thought would look good, and I said "go for it." I'm not the kind of client that has a specific vision in mind so I'm grateful when stylists use their expertise (but ask you.) Also, Michael explained that the dye he chose was less damaging and would be better suited for my hair, and he also recommended a few other products I should use. Some salons color your hair before they cut it, but I had a lot coming off, so Michael did a quick trim first. He cut it so quickly, I didn't even notice that my hair was suddenly 3-4 inches shorter until I glanced behind me and saw the floor littered with my split ends. Seriously, think this man might be some kind of ninja. When it came time to process the color, Michael asked me if I wanted to sit outside. This was the most unexpected delight of the evening. It turns out, they set up a little outdoor area with gravel, chairs, shade umbrellas, and even a fountain to work with COVID restrictions last year, and decided to bring it back this year. This was such a lovely surprise, and made for an unparalleled hair appointment experience. I don't get outside as much as I'd like to, so I appreciated getting a minute to sit in the sun. Granted, the neighbors were playing loud music so it was not perhaps quite as serene as expected, but I didn't mind so much. Throughout the visit Michael was very nice, as was the rest of the staff. My hair came out nice and the price was very reasonable. In fact, it was like reverse sticker shock-- I was actually surprised at how inexpensive it was. As someone with long hair, I tend to get charged more for these services-- I think because most stylists tend to do color first. Both the inside and outside areas of the salon were beautiful. Definitely recommend this one-- especially in the warm months when you can catch a little sunshine while your hair sets! read more

I know I am definitely in the minority when I say Michael gave me the worst haircut of my life. I was so looking forward to going to a renowned stylist and expected the best haircut of my life. It was a mullet, uneven and most of my friends asked what happened to my hair?!?! I know this is supposition, but while being shampooed I think he took my neutral stance on the presidential election (it was the day before election day) as disagreeing with his absolute hatred for Donald Trump. I really was neutral and said so. So....I left wondering if he was too tilted to do his finest work (at best) or deliberately did a botched job (at worst). Needless to say, never ever ever never again. P.S. I used to go there and had a great stylist who left. When asked why, Michael said their political views were very different. Sheesh.... P.S.S. First time at Hairanoia, what a great experience. Very safety conscious regarding Covid hygiene practices, I felt very safe. Lovely atmosphere, very comfortable and inviting. My old stylist left, so I switched to Stephanie, and my hair has never looked better since I started seeing her. She's a fellow curly girl so she really gets how to make curls look their best with minimal effort. She showed me a few tricks to try at home, so now my hair looks nice all the time. She's very nice, super accommodating, and very conscientious about COVID protocols. Her prices are pretty on par with what the going rate for a wash and cut is in the area. read more

I had read about Hairanoia online for a while before taking the plunge to cut several inches off of my dead, frizzy, and unsightly hair. I called Amanda and made an appointment for a weekday afternoon. I love that the Hairanoia sign is large right on the front of the building, so it's easy to find in the middle of a somewhat awkward 4-way. The shop itself is carefully decorated with a calming modern bohemian vibe. There's plenty to look at when you're getting a new 'do. Upon entering, you are offered snacks or a piping hot tea/coffee which are all complementary. Amanda was incredibly sweet and is a talented hairdresser. You can tell she is experienced and knows what she's doing. She listened to what I asked for (cut off the dead stuff and then some), and styled it sleek afterward. She got rid of about 5 inches and gave long layers to me. I walked out feeling brand new. I won't want to wash my hair for days because I know I won't be able to make it look this good ever again... For the wash, cut, and blow dry, it took about an hour and came to only $35! I've spent over $60 at high-end salons to walk out with a sad wallet and even sadder hair. When I first walked in the owner Michael greeted me and offered me food and beverages. Loved the look of the salon and how it was all decorated for fall! My hair appointment was with Maggie and she gave me exactly what I wanted! I brought in pictures as an example and the girls in the photos had wavy hair and she even offered to curl mine since I said I liked their look. Maggie was so personable and easy to talk with. I could not be more thrilled with my haircut from Caitlin! I've had a chin length bob for several years and wanted to get a short pixie-ish cut. I showed Caitlin a picture of the type of cut I was going for, explained how much time I'm willing to put into styling my hair (or more accurately the lack of time I'm willing to put in), and she gave me the PREFECT cut! It's super cute, easy, and I just love it! I've had a lot of mediocre haircuts over the years, and it feels so good to be excited about my hair again! I will definitely be going back. This is the 2nd salon in Syracuse I have ever been to. This salon has 5 stylists that take appointments all separately. I called Amanda but she was booked until August. I called Rachel Hope and she sent me a link to sign up for an appointment online. I wish they all had an online portal that was direct from their website the way Cosmopolitan (formerly Reddicks) does. I had a shampoo and cut with Rachel. I have wanted to checkout this salon since I moved here over a year ago. I get my hair cut once a year usually. I know, that isn't what's recommended. I like how the exterior of this shop is super cute and quaint. It's painted yellow outside and has cute lights. At night, the shop definitely adds a softness to that part of the city (that is otherwise rundown and sketchy). It's on the corner of an awkward 4-way stop a reviewer Dana mentioned. There is street parking. I am not sure if they have their own private lot. It's $35 for hair cut and shampoo (no blow drying) for women's. I appreciated the appointment reminder via email the day before the cut. My appointment was at 2:30 and I was seated at 2:36. I liked that the room I was in was private and in the back with its own chair and shampooing station. The shop is very large with a lot of eclectic furniture, tons of magazines to read (current ones too!), and some interesting garden decorations (fairies, bunnies, crosses, topiaries, etc). There are Twizzlers, pastries, coffee, water and other snacks for you to have at the entrance as you wait for your hairstylist. I wasn't greeted immediately when I walked in so I stood around a little awkwardly and waited for someone to be free to check me in or tell me if my stylist was ready for me. I liked that Rachel semi-blow dried my hair despite me not asking for it/paying for it. I think she felt inclined to for me to have the finished look. I asked for a deep v-cut and felt that she knew exactly what I wanted. She worked at my hair confidently. I also liked the head massage I was given prior to the shampoo. read more

I literally created a yelp just to leave this review. I seriously cannot get over how amazing my experience was with Michael, and I wasn't even the one getting my hair cut! My boyfriend needed his hair cut for a funeral the next day. Even though Michael was the only one working, late, on a Friday night, he took us in. He left the parlor open AN HOUR past the open time just to fit my boyfriend in (He stayed open UNTIL 11:00 PM JUST FOR US). He is a kind, gentle hearted person with excellent style, and fantastic skills. He turned my boyfriends mop presentable. He put a smile on both of our faces the whole night. I was seen by Miguel Ruiz for trim and balayage. He left my hair with a clear line of demarcation. He also cut off 3 inches when I asked for a slight trim and he himself confirmed and said "about half an inch". Since he couldn't blow dry me, I paid and left a generous tip but upon getting home and blow drying I saw the demarcation and length. I texted photos and was only concerned about the demarcation, since there's nothing he can do about the length now, even thought it was not what I asked for. He proceeded to condescend to me saying that's how balayage looks and blamed my hair. He offered to refund or fix. I gave him the opportunity to fix it. When I walked in he again attempted to condescend to me saying that's how it should look when I had 3 people tell me it didn't look right. He attempted to fix. I had to go home again to blow dry. The line of demarcation is less noticable but still there, as confirmed by 3 people again. As I'm still not happy I asked for the refund. He refused, condescended again and said my expectations were unrealistic...I had let go of the fact I lost 3 inches of hair, I also let go of the fact that in reality the color is not anywhere near to what I asked for. The only thing I asked is that there is not a LINE going across a section of my hair, which is a very realistic expectation for balayage. He is not an expert, he is rude and condescending. I decided to get all my hair cut off. Because of the reviews on here, I called Hairanoia, and was directed by the very friendly person who answered the phone, to give Jimmy a call. Jimmy was very prompt in returning my phone call and set up an appointment same day. The salon itself is beautiful and the people were all very friendly. Jimmy welcomed me and I told him my hair situation. He got right to work and did an absolutely FANTASTIC job. I never thought i could go short, and he crafted such an amazing cut. Jimmy also waxed and sculpted my brows. I am rarely happy with the way they turn out. In this case they are perfect. I would HIGHLY recommend this salon and all the stylists in it. I did not have a good experience with Miguel at Haranoia. As a stylist, he did not listen to what I wanted nor did he communicate with me well during the haircut, he ultimately gave me a haircut that I found to be sub par, and though I was visibly dissatisfied he rushed me out the door because his next client was waiting. Then, when I returned and politely waited for the following client to finish, I asked him for some adjustments. He performed them, salvaging a bad haircut into a decent one. The next morning he texted me saying he will not cut my hair again and called me "entitled", simply for requesting alterations to a haircut. I would encourage new and current clients to think twice before booking with Miguel, I had a horrible experience with him. read more

Hairanoia has been our family go-to ever since we've met Michael, and I've yet to meet with a stylist there who not only didn't do amazing work on my bird's nest, but felt like (and remains so!) a friend. My favorite cut in the years I've been there was by Miguel Ruiz, not only because I looked SUPER CUTE (even with short hair, which I don't often go for) but because he was the sweetest person to chat to and get to know. Anywhere else I go I cringe because having to sit with someone you don't know is this introvert's nightmare, but Miguel and I hit it off right away and talked puppies and hair products (he's an expert, by the way, and has his own line of products to share) for the entire time. Just moved to the area and needed a nice fall color and cut. Wanted my bangs back too. Got a 6:30 appointment which was perfect for me because I could go after work. Michael DeSalvo, the owner, gave me the best hair cut and color I've ever had. Loved all the products he used...my hair looked like it belonged in a magazine. I'm telling you....HE IS AMAZING. I told him I did not have a specific color in mind I just wanted to go darker...he blended a bunch of colors together and gave me the most beautiful brown with red tint. My bangs came out awesome too. Service is five-star (I was offered coffee, water, snacks several times) and everyone is really friendly and easy to talk to. My hair took about an hour and 20 mins so when I left it was late and dark. Michael waited at the door to make sure I got to my car alright. 5 star experience. He acted like he knew what he was doing and I ended up with a hairstyle more fitting of a mental asylum patient. Everything is choppy and uneven. When I mentioned how it was not even, he proceeded to say it evens out my face and if it was cut evenly my crooked nose, uneven ears...blah blah just subtle insults. Caitlin is the only person in my entire life who has cut my hair the way I want it. I love her! She's sweet and easy to get along with, so there's no awkward conversation. I was ecstatic when a friend recommended Hairanoia! I've been going to Caitlin for about 3 years, and she's great. She always does my hair perfectly and is so fun to chat with. Plus, she charges a reasonable price. I'm sad that I am graduating soon and have to find a new hairdresser. Hairanoia is a gem of a hair salon with a really nice atmosphere.
