I love As Kneaded Cafe! After years patronizing the Bakery, I am SO excited to have this gem at the library. Our family goes to the library all the time, and now we get to stop in for a tasty treats and coffee after checking out books. Sometimes it's an after school snack, other times it's a morning treat. Our kids are obsessed with the croissants, my partner loves the sandwiches, and I love their salads and espresso. There is really something for everyone, and it's great that we can also grab a loaf of bread to bring home. The space is so welcoming and cute, they did a great job reimagining it. VERY SLEAZY SALES PROMOTION TODAY!!! At the library Summer Reading Festival today they made an announcement that we should stop into the As Kneaded Cafe as they were giving a free cookie to each child who completed the reading program. The Cafe was packed and many family were making large orders. When we got closer to the front they made an announcement that they were only giving cookies to first FIFTY finishers and those cookies were already gone! SHAME ON YOU FOR THAT! Since the library knows well in advance how may finishers there were, they could have planned for that number or at least BE TRANSPARENT AND SAY THE FIRST 50 CHILDREN TO STOP IN COULD HAVE A FREE COOKIE! read more

I love this little cafe! It is a cozy little nook just as you go inside the library. Everything I've had there was very good. The dressing on the salads was very unusual and quite tasty. Yesterday I had a scone and some lemonade, which was real lemonade. It is a great place to meet a friend, parking is easy, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. read more

It's inside the library. The only way to find it is to go into the library. My friend couldn't find the other entrance after walking all the way around. I checked the menu and formed my order in advance. They ran out of ham & cheese croissants. They ran out of a beverage my friend wanted too. If you go, make sure you have prepared second and third choices. Be prepared to wait for the baristas to care. Be prepared to interrupt your conversation 3 times. Once things arrived in 3 different rounds, they were delicious and refreshingly unique. Eat and drink coffee before you go. It will be a wait, even at 1pm with no one else there. As Kneaded Cafe opened recently in a dedicated space that once hosted a cafe. It's on the right as one approaches San Leandro Library. Weather was warm, didn't have much of an appetite, just needed a brew to "wake up". Associates at counter quick to acknowledge my presence, took my order. It was ready in minutes. Small interior space with a service counter which had display shelves for edibles, breads, & pastries. At the right side is an outside patio with more seating. Plenty of parking in lot. Didn't hear any music when I was there. Merch, coffee beans, tea bags available for sale at left side of counter. Offerings: (drinks): coffee, tea, lemonade, espressos, (edibles): cookies, scones, croissants, sandwiches, fruit parfait, tea cakes, muffins, hand pies, breads. Think inventory rotates. Not everything seen on shelves. Sips: pour over (4) black, medium roast blend. -premade coffee poured from thermos. Initially slightly harsh. Mellowed over time. Consistent medium-ish, never bold. -haven't had this blend for awhile. Few cafes serve it. 4 stars Worthy! Service 5 stars. Quality: artisan coffee beans. Quantity: reasonable. read more

​As a big fan of the As Kneaded Bakery, I was thrilled that they would take over the cafe spot in the San Leandro Library (which is conveniently much closer to my house than the bakery). I didn't attend during the opening day, knowing that there would be a lot of hoopla around it. But I have dined in two times during the first month. The first time, it was 11 AM on a Saturday with my wife. The parking lot was quite full, though we were able to find a spot. The cafe was very busy, with many people having an early lunch or a snack. The patio was full, mostly of families with children. We were able to find a small table inside to enjoy our drinks and pastries. I ordered a pineapple espresso tonic and a brown butter rice crispy treat, while she got a yuzu lemonade and a citrus scone. The rice crispy treat was very large, must I somehow managed to eat the entire thing. Young children might have difficulty eating it, as it's very thick. But very delicious. My second visit was 10 AM on a Monday. I was the only customer dining most of this visit, though many people came through to order to go. On this visit, I ordered a hot mocha and a chocolate chip cookie (vegan). The cookie is of the flat and chewy variety, and my food was served on plates and cups (not disposable). If there is a downside to this cafe, there are not many power outlets available to customers. The exterior wall is concrete, so only a few spots adjacent to the interior walls have access to wall outlets. This may be an issue on the weekends or after school (when kids are coming through the library). Otherwise, this is a great cafe. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the food is wonderful. I plan this to be my regular cafe hangout spot. read more

Sad to only give this place a 3 star because I love the actual bakery. This cafe is a little unorganized and while I'm glad it's next to the library to grab a quick snack, I wasn't too pleased with my most recent experience here My bf and I ordered the chez aline sandwich - which was okay at best. The bread was sooooo tough and didn't seem fresh at all and the sandwich was cold (they didn't give us an option to heat it up and it seems by other reviews that it's a cold sandwich). By the time I ate half of the sandwich, the sides of my head was hurting from chewing. Sandwich would be 100% better if we could heat it up We also tried to order the yuzu lemonade but they sold out. They offered alternates: regular lemonade or lavender but I didn't want either. They offered to refund. I asked if they needed my credit card to refund and then the person at the register (different from the person I placed an order with) clicked a few buttons on the tablet and said that they refunded me. Welp they didn't ...I checked my cc a few days later and they must have refunded someone else lol. Not a big deal since it's like $5 or $6 but kinda sucks when you pay for nothing. The scone and cookie we got were good and the coffees we got were fine. One good thing is milk substitute is free which is great for someone who is lactose intolerant. read more

Went for the first time on a Saturday late morning. Place was not busy which was a plus, but stock was low. 2 stars is for the staff at the location connected to the Library. Except for the elder lady who makes the salads. All the workers a young, stuck up, eye rolling, too good to answer questions, with an impatient tones. Old lady making salad had to answer my small questions about the menu, if I can have a fork, etc. pretty much had to do the jobs for the other workers. Workers look like they are just waiting for a rock concert to come on. They could care less if you looked confused or have questions on the menu. Not quite the same experiences as their old Pop up during the farmers market days before, or their other location on Victoria st. However, food is good (salad and sandwiches), but the drinks made by those kids is just too sweet and taste cheap. read more

I love that they are on Too Good too Good, it's been my favorite. They have lots of sandwiches and pastries to choose from. I do think the sandwiches are way over priced for what you get and I don't think I'd come back for them. I do think the bakery is better than the Cafe. The staff does not appear to follow proper food handling procedures. I've been a loyal customer of the bakery, so I decided to try the café. When I walked in a few weeks ago, the clerk with long hair had his back to me. When he turned around, he was scratching his forearms. After I placed my order, he grabbed a pastry bag and placed his unwashed hand and forearm in the bag to drop the Rice Krispies treat inside. I stopped him and pointed out that he should wash his hands. He seemed surprised by the request. If staff are handling food without basic sanitation practices, especially after touching their body or other surfaces. It raises concerns about hygiene and food safety. Sadly, this experience made me lose trust in the business. Scratching breaks skin and leaves dead skin behind. I can't unsee it. read more

Everything about my visit was wonderful. I had the seasonal kale salad and a cup of coffee. The salad tasted fresh and flavorful, and the coffee tasted like it had been freshly ground. The atmosphere was beautiful, and I really enjoyed my meal. The only thing that kept this from being a perfect experience was my interaction at the end. When I finished eating, I carried my dishes inside and approached an employee to hand them to her. She simply pointed to the dish return area and told me to place them there. I had no problem returning my dishes, but the interaction felt dismissive and lacked the warmth and hospitality I experienced throughout the rest of my visit. Overall, I would return because the food and coffee were excellent. I just hope future interactions with staff are as welcoming as the rest of the café. read more

The fabulous owner, Iliana, greeted us at the register. I tried a drip coffee and vegan chocolate chip cookie. I love a good high quality cup of coffee and cookie, and that's exactly what I got. I love the bakery and the library- combining the two is amazing- I'm now looking forward to working in the library and taking breaks in the cafe. Latte was delicious and I'm very excited to be able to order the Aline sandwich whenever I want instead of waiting for it to be back on the bakery menu! Usually not one to leave reviews, but this interaction was honestly kind of disappointing. I spent close to $30 on a (stale) baguette, sandwich, and coffee, tipped as well, and just asked if a little syrup could be added to my iced coffee because it was way stronger and more bitter than expected. I even would've been happy to pay for it. The barista told me she "couldn't do that right now," which was confusing since the place was completely empty at the time, it wasn't near closing time, and there were lots of workers on staff. When I explained that the coffee was hard to drink as-is, I was just very rudely directed to add sugar from the coffee bar myself -- which obviously doesn't dissolve very well in iced coffee, so I ended up with a grainy drink I still couldn't really enjoy. The entire interaction just seemed like I was bothering them to be there. What made it more frustrating was that the manager/owner was standing nearby during the interaction and didn't step in at all. I've been a regular here because I study at the library and I genuinely like supporting local businesses, so this was a bummer. I will say in most of my prior experiences, they also are quite dismissive and rude but I keep going back because of the convenience next to the library. I've recommended this place to friends and clients before, but this experience definitely changed my impression a bit. I know it sounds trivial over something as small as syrup, but after working in customer service for years and owning a small business myself, I really think it's the small interactions that make people want to come back. I just checked them out today, as I have been a fan of my bakery, i got their artichoke sandwich. Even though i am not a vegetarian, it just sounded so intriguing that I couldn't resist. It was fabulous. Service was surprisingly fast, but excellent as always. Can't wait to try all their other offerings. Place was clean, ambiance was nice and quiet . Good location. You can dine in or order to go . Nice option because the original location is only to go orders . The problem is poor Customer Service when you're ordering food that's more than just a croissant loaf of bread or a beverage . Heads up...The sandwiches are premade and they don't allow me any changes the problem is they don't tell their customers that the time of purchase and it is not stated anywhere in the cafe or their menu. I ordered this ham sandwich with a watermelon radish . (Served on a baguette)They buttered the bread only on one side (bottom of the sandwich) plus the sandwich is not heated . I was Not given an option to do so . When I asked them to add butter on the inside the top part of the bread the manager took my sandwich to the kitchen area. I'm waiting for her to come out with the sandwich ((assuming she added the butter to the inside top of the bread) after waiting 10 minutes I went to check on my sandwich and the manager told me she threw it out letting me know well since I was dissatisfied and they cannot add the butter. She told me I figured you don't want the sandwich so I tossed it. I was quite shocked that instead of trying to make it right and make me happy she assumed i didn't want the sandwich. The manager should never have made assumptions . Instead of throwing food out, she should've explained to me upfront that they don't make any alterations to the sandwiches and given me the option of what I wanted to do The sandwich is $14. The manager did not offer me any alternative just refunded me $14 I also ordered the quiche Lorraine I presumed it would be served heated since I was dining in. When I placed the order, I even told the cashier that I'm dining in.. the quiche Lorraine was served cold. I asked him to heat it. The 2nd time it came back cold again. This could be a health department issue . The manager told me they use a warming oven. I told her it's must not be working because the quiche is still cold. The manager's response to us I don't know what to do with you to make you happy so she tossed my slice of quiche out and told me I'm just gonna refund you money so I was refunded an additional $14 for the quiche and didn't get to eat anything. The manager should be given me the sandwich and a quiche back so I could take it to Go. The manager needs to learn Customer Service and making a customer happy instead of just tossing out food. Plus, I ordered a lemonade and when you order it without ice, they tell you you don't get the full size drink.. the bakery is known for getting things to go. I realize the location at the San Leandro library is a new location for them and it's their grand opening today . The management of the café need to make sure that the food is heated properly and how to provide good customer service vs. when there's a problem, they just toss the customers food and give them the refund . Heads up ... if you were going to dine in, ...make sure when you place your order with the cashier make sure they explain there's no alterations to the menu and make sure you tell them If you want your food serve served cold or heated . The owner needs to learn the Customer Service side and make sure the customer satisfied not just automatically toss your food and refund your money and make you feel bad like you are the problem or did something wrong.
