When I am off or when I take off for doctor's appointment on either Mondays or Tuesdays and in the area of Kalihi, I make a stop here to grab eggs, the very special kine eggs we call "Balut" will not for me but for my momma & siblings, they love this stuff! Why Mondays and Tuesdays? due to the size of balut are small, don't want to eat them when they get too big. haha. Besides the Baluts, Asagi Hatchery got seeds and citrus fruit trees too, I also grab a few bag of vegtable seeds for my mom and a bag of fresh Rau Ram ($2.) to eat with the balut. The citrus fruit trees are $52. & up and they are from nursery on the Big Island. I really want a Yuzu lemon tree but they are all sold out. I am on the wait list for a Yuzu tree. Attempted to buy Balut here for a whole week. But with no success, at first I made the drive there and got turned away because there is a shortage on them. that's cool. It was my bad I didn't call ahead or even think there would be a shortage since we never had that problem before. I'm not upset that I can't get them. But I am highly annoyed that they keep giving me the run arounds. They said they will call me in 30 mins to let me know if they have enough. But I got no calls and same answer for 2 days! If they just gave me a call and said "sorry, we don't have enough in stock for you" or just gave me a damn call back like they said they would. I would have been fine. If you're trying to buy some. Don't even bother! You won't get a damn chance to buy any. Making the drive there would be very pointless. Even a call is pointless already. read more

I was referred to this place by a friend who has gotten chicks from them before. We are new to this chicken raising thing as the Mama Hen that initially layed 10 eggs now have only 7 surviving chicks and now Mama Hen is nowhere to be found. So I came here to get chicken wire, stakes and Starter Feed for almost $80. The 25 feet of wire cost $30. Each stake cost $10 and I got four of them. And the Starter Feed cost a little over $6 for a 5 lb bag. Maxie was really nice and helpful, along with her mom but I didn't catch her name. They were both nice and gave me great advice. I have been coming to Asagi Hatchery since I was 8 Years old to buy some baby chicks. They actually sell a bunch of chicken feed, medicine and farming supplies here. I have also seen some plants being sold here too. They also sell Balut or chicken fetuses that are still growing. They start selling the eggs at any age. They pretty must start incubating the eggs and you can buy the eggs at the stage you want to eat them at. If they aren't sold in time then they hatch and you can buy the chick. Not sure what happens if the chick isn't sold, but I am pretty sure they always sell out. Every time I call for new chicks, I am put on a waiting list a month away. The ladies who work there are always so nice, sweet, and helpful. I have been there many times to pick up baby chicks to be raised for eggs. I have always had my pullets; they are 100% on sexing chicks for me. I have recently placed another order because they are now selling the Easter egg laying chickens that pay eggs from brown, green, pink and blue. I hope I get the ones that lay pretty colored eggs. I am so excited. We always come to Asagi's for organic feed for our ducks. There are other places that sell organic feed, but ive had bad expiences with so many bugs, so I only buy from Asagis. It sounds weird...but our ducks' poop doesnt smell as stink and its easier to clean up (wash down) then if we buy organic instead of non-organic. We also love the local fruit trees they have in stock. We bought a cinnamon tree, and other rare trees there. The packets of seeds are unusual and rare, and we grew our own veggies for quite a while. The eggs are really good too. You can't get it fresher then directly from the hatchery. We always buy our baby chicks from there and have a fresh source of eggs. About four years ago I met Glen Shinsato (Shinsato's Farm Kahaluu), Glen runs a all natural hog/rabbit farm (now Google Glen Shinsato and tell me who you see smiling back at ya! Go on, please lol), later, Chef Doug Kocol (Dougie Fresh! First chef ever I knew to preach Farm to Table, and Sustainability! Now of Old Major, Denver Co.), then I couldn't get grass to grow under my lychee (that's how I met Sonya! Aloha Chingu!). What to do with this eyesore in my back yard? I grew up on a farm, farm to table seemed an odd concept to me, as this was basically all I knew growing up. An idea came to me, why not chickens? I mean, why not? Then (and this was one of those life changing moments), I met Maxine. I found a world of knowledge wrapped in one person. She not only sold me my birds, but taught me how to care for them, train them, and use them to make my yard a better habitat. Things like soil regeneration, using organic soil in the bottom of my coup, and rotating it every two to three months as a natural fertilizer for my plants. Free ranging, to keep the hens in harmony, and pest control in my grass. Organic pest control for the coup that makes the smell nonexistent! Even that chickens love oyster shells? High in calcium, good for shell density, and grit. Chickens have no teeth, so grit i.e. small stones, or oyster shells provide a way to digest/soften foods. Who knew? Asagi is run by Maxine and her mom, it's a mother/daughter operation. They sell all you'll need to start your own backyard egg farm. They also hatch, quarterly and you can select the type of birds you desire. Order ahead to insure you get the type you want. They have a "Big Book of Chickens" for you to look through, in case you have no idea how to begin. There is a simpler life, a harmony with nature. These things bring internal happiness. They've been hatching eggs since 1935 and have managed to stay in business by embracing this one concept: diversification. The ladies who run the family business at Asagi are super nice. Lately there seems to have been a resurgence towards growing-your-own and going back to the old ways of keeping your own chickens for eggs is super cheap to do. When I got my first chickens the lady on the phone said they raised their price from $4.25 per chick.. I was expecting like $10... She said its now $4.75! Hahahaha Anyways you can get some chickens that will lay you an egg a day from Asagi, and the feed too. They also sell balut and seeds of change seed packets. I can go there and "talk story" with them for a long time. They usually have a wait list for their chicks. Specialty breeds are a special order---ask them via email or phone for the list---they will email it to you in a timely manner. I placed my name on the waitlist for my brown layers (6)---but wasn't able to take all 6 (just 3), and they were very accommodating about it.
