What an awesome family run business. They have hundreds, if not thousands of affordably priced and very unique orchids to choose from - many of which I cannot purchase back home in CA. The woman working there walking around with us and took lots of time helping us find the more rare and unique varieties and colors I was interested in, and gave us very helpful transport and care instructions. She let me know I could pay a lesser cost to carry them back by hand or in my carry-on hassle-free, which was definitely the case! We got 4 small/medium orchids for $80, all of which are extremely rare and unique. Couldn't have been happier with our experience and purchase

They're so awesome at Olomana Orchids! Full of knowledge and so willing to share, and so many beautiful orchids to choose from and look at. I'm an orchid novice and excited to try my hand at raising these beautiful plants. Go and support this local, family run business. They're even more beautiful than their orchids.

Look out for this sign near Kualoa!

Whenever I have visitors to the Islands, Olomana Orchids is one of the requisite stops along the way up around the East side to the North Shore. The reason why has mostly to do with the family that runs Olomana Orchids, and their philosophy and subtle passion for the art of the love of Orchids. Orchids are among the most difficult of flowers to care for. And their needs change, depending on the individual strain of Orchid. Much like the care and love of women for men, the love and tending of Orchids is a thing that requires understanding, care, love, affection, and a willingness to not choose the easy thing; but instead to dedicate oneself to a pursuit that may be difficult and challenging to understand and implement, but ultimately rewards. In the case of Orchids, it is a beautiful, sustainable bloom that can last a lifetime. In the case of women, it is a beautiful, sustainable, bloom that can last a lifetime. I will be honest, and say that I do not understand women, and I do not understand orchids, but I strive to understand both, and to love both for the curious, individual beauty that both possess. And the owner of Olomana Orchids, while he may not be able to advise me on women, possesses an incredible wealth of knowledge that he is more than happy to share about Orchids. My (now-ex) fiancee and I visited Olomana Orchids a few weeks ago, and were treated to not only exceptional service, but were provided with above-and-beyond education on the various kinds of orchids, and the care and love of them. It fascinates me, how some are so hardy and easy to tend to, and yet are so beautiful; on the other hand, how some are so rare and so difficult as a diamond in the rough, yet are so incomprehensibly beautiful that my breath was taken away at their beauty, much as a woman's. These at Olomana Orchids are often unique, bred to be their own, individual, that you can only find here. Cared for and raised individually, perhaps just for you. It is in my opinion that if you, as a man, can care for and love and raise and orchid to success, you are one step closer to learning how to learn and understand and respect the things that make a woman unique, herself, and how to love her and care for her. Anyway. I bring my visitors here because the owners are extremely helpful. There is a display room where you can view what they have; and they have a growing area that you have access to also, where you can see what is actually going on. I have never met anyone who understands and has the kind of passion for orchids that I can identify with, and the owners will take the time to educate and help you select the orchids that are right for what you want. The other thing I have always really admired is that like a good friend when it comes to relationships, they won't let you buy an orchid that is "junk", meaning, they won't let you buy an orchid which looks good at the moment, but will quickly degrade and not last. I've uploaded almost two dozen sample photos here. Please take a look at them yourself. Prices are very reasonable also. We were able to buy for as inexpensively as $7, and depending on how you want it packed and shipped, will be similarly affordable (they do fully certified shipping to the mainland US). The owners are also very honest, and will tell you which ones are worth buying and which ones are not. They will teach you about how to observe the stems and roots, and the mistakes people make in looking at how the current bloom is, instead of how the history of the stems are, and about the buds. We trusted his advice, and today, even though she and I are no longer together, I have an incredibly beautiful bloom of orchids planted in my backyard that I tend to, as beautiful as Olomana Orchids promised, growing and flourishing as predicted and advised, for only $7 dollars. Look for Olomana Orchids on the way to Kualoa. Left side of the road if you're heading north. Right side if you're heading south. They are worth a stop, especially if you are a visitor, or taking visitors on a tour of our islands to show them a unique experience that they can take home with them. Orchids are a labor of love. A labor of love that most often is worth the effort. Learn to love and care for an orchid, and you will be able to take the first step toward learning how to love and care for a woman. She, like an orchid, is delicate yet strong. Beautiful, but if you don't care for it, will cease to bloom. And if you take care of it right, will be a reward in itself. Stop by if you are on your North Shore drive/ tour. Talk to the owner. It will be worth it, and you may even come away with something beautiful that you can grow for a lifetime.

We noticed this spot while driving for a bit and thought it would be nice to get my mom a gift from here (she loves orchids). We noticed that we were only a couple minutes from closing, so we called and asked if it's ok to come up; once they heard it was for a Christmas gift, they were all for it. We looked around for a couple of minutes before one of the employees asked us who we were shopping for. When I explained that my mom loves orchids, she said that she had just the one--we were lead towards the back in an employee only area and found a beautiful orchid like none I had ever seen before. They gift wrapped it and talked to us about the species and how to care for it, and even threw in some free extra plants! Such a fantastic little spot with an amazing selection and better staff.

Thank you for making my home beautiful and happy! Love fresh flowers and plants. Peter and staff are hard working and do an awesome job with their beautiful orchids. I go visit Olomana Orchids every few months and pickup my house plant. Love the selection of orchids. The orchid farm is in a beautiful area. Enjoy the scenery also. Also great place to get orchids to decorate your special occasions. My friend used their orchids as centerpieces for their wedding. Very good idea and great gifts!

The owner helped me pick out an orchid for myself and my mother right before Mother's Day weekend. He saw the ones I picked out and recommended another one that was budding but not blooming yet. I'm so glad I took his advice. My orchid has been blooming for weeks and is gorgeous!!!

I ordered the small holiday gift basket on a Tuesday to ship to Las Vegas. The beautiful basket of orchid plants arrived on Thursday (yes Fed-Ex 2 days!!) just in time for my Dads surprise birthday party. They packaged the plant so well that even though the temperatures in Vegas were in the 100s it did not affect the plants at all. My Dad loved the gift basket & I am so happy I decided to order from Olomana Orchids - I will always recommend them to everyone!!

Going to the country is really relaxing and the drive reminded me of how beautiful Oahu is and how lucky I am to be from such a wonderful place. Kualoa Ranch has done a great job of marketing itself and expanding to include a market, Kualoa Grown, featuring locally grown produce, products. And meats. The market opens at 10a, 7 days a week. While it's not huge per se, I think it's a good enough size and has a decent variety featuring locally produced items. I ended up buying local chocolate, ulu chips, macadamia poi cookies, miso sausages, beautiful choi sum greens, star fruit, li hing dried apple bananas, kulolo (my favorite), cold coffee drinks, and Kualoa ranch branded merchandise. Admittedly I went a little overboard shopping but I am happy to support local. Prices are a bit steep but that seems to be the norm everywhere nowadays. The ladies working in the market were so sweet and helpful. The aloha was alive and well here! Parking is plentiful but it was full of cars. We did circle around a few times but found a spot. My Dad said this adventure to Kualoa Ranch was so fun and did not disappoint. We will be back! Want to buy local? This is where to go!…read more Kualoa Grown is a little grocery store within Kualoa Ranch that's free to access and has its own parking stalls. It's to your left when you drive into Kualoa Ranch. Open from 10am to 5pm daily. As the name says, the products are either from the ranch itself or locally produced. It includes raw beef and pork, shrimp, fish, and fruits and vegetables. Prices are definitely reasonable for buying local. Compared to Whole Foods and Foodland, I'd rather buy local. I got pork belly, ground pork, and Portuguese sausage. So good! Next time I want to try its beef, which they don't have often I was told. Also, grabbed some taro, which was very good! Cashier was super nice. There were a lot of local baked goods at the front too. Wished I didn't live so far. I'd come in for groceries every week!

After visiting Sumida Farm and tasting different watercress dishes, I can see myself picking up some watercress from the grocery store. For so many years, I've passed the beautiful green area along Kamehameha Highway in front of Pearlridge and next to Starbucks and thought what a breath of fresh air, compared to everything else in the area along Kam Highway. I was very fortunate to be a part of an exclusive tour of Sumida Farm. They do not do this regularly and it is not open to the general public. We got to meet Mr. David Sumida, the 3rd generation owner of the family-owned business graced us with his presence and gave a brief history lesson about their farm. His parents moved from Japan and began growing watercress. Fast forward to today, many developers have offered millions of dollars for the land in hopes of developing it into something else. Bravo to the Sumida Family for standing their ground and hanging onto the precious, watercress-bearing land that has fed Hawaii for years. We got to walk along the watercress field and even dip our feet in the cool water. Being there was so serene, and being down in the field, I almost forgot that we were surrounded by Kam Highway and Pearlridge Center. We were treated to a special lunch by a chef who whipped up recipes that contained watercress and let me tell you, some of the dishes didn't even taste like it contained watercress even if it was one of the main ingredients. The lunch gave us many new ideas on how to incorporate watercress into our meals. I have a whole new appreciation for this vegetable and for the beautiful farm along Kam Highway.

Sumida Farm is not just good at their job, they're outstanding in their field...of watercress!…read more Today I had the pleasure of taking a tour on their watercress farm! Did you know that we used to have dozens of watercress farms on island? Now there's just 2 farms left on Oahu. I've learnt that it takes about 6-8 weeks, till the watercress grows back. They call it "seasonal crops" with longer summers, and less cool nights in the summer. You're looking at a 30-40% production from July-January (depending on the weather). With a dozen of pure springs where the water flows, is what watercress needs to survive, along with sun, and not too much humidity. Here, you'll also find lots of fish, crayfish, and birds in this environment. You'll also notice the sprinkler system, which is a pest deterrent system, pulling from the spring water (fully sustainable). It was a totally beautiful (and hot) day today! Thank you Sumida Farms for the warm hospitality!

Sweet…read moreLand is a great spot especially for those with little ones or people looking to see what it takes to go from goat to a quality local product. There's free parking located on the property with a short walk to the Farm Shop, which should be a good starting point for any visit. I took advantage of the tour offered on Fridays (I believe Saturdays as well). Locals and military also get a small discount. With that being said, it appears to be geared more toward those with children. During my time here, there was actually a school field trip going through at roughly the same time. Expect the tour to take approximately an hour to consist of feeding and handmilking goats while also getting to see the different facilities. As some others state, there is a typical farm smell, but it's not overpowering. Heidi served as my guide and was happy to answer any questions I had regarding the process and small farm operations. Can't say enough good things about her. I ended the tour with a stop at the Farm Shop and purchased a goat cheese flight with crackers with plantation tea for lunch along with a couple things to take home to include caramel and soap. The flight consisting of a couple varieties was actually so rich and fulfilling that I actually stretched the meal to dinner too! My personal favorite was the olive flavor. The caramel, now that I'm home, is a welcome addition to my morning coffee. I'd love to visit again in the future to see what other future concoctions they come up with!

Watching our kids feed the goats was one of those simple moments they'll probably remember for a long time. It's also about as clean as you could reasonably expect for a working goat farm. Yes, it smells like goats, that comes with the territory. If you're expecting a sterile petting zoo, this isn't it. It's a real farm and I actually appreciated that. Where the experience lost me was the hospitality. Maybe we arrived too close to closing, but the staff felt completely disengaged. Nobody was particularly welcoming, nobody seemed excited to talk about the farm or its products and asking simple questions felt like an inconvenience. You drive all the way out here because you're interested in what they're building. A little warmth would go a long way. The other issue was the flies. Again, I understand this is a farm. Flies are part of the environment. But when they're landing around food while ice cream is being scooped, it starts to cross from "that's farm life" into something that feels unpleasant. It was hard not to notice and it definitely took away from the experience. The goat milk ice cream was good, not quite my preference over traditional dairy ice cream, but still worth trying if you're visiting. Feeding the goats was fun, the grounds are beautiful and it's a fantastic stop for families with toddlers. I just wish the customer experience matched the scenery. This place has everything it needs to be unforgettable. A little more hospitality and a little more attention around the food service area would make a huge difference. I'd still recommend visiting but come for the farm, the photos and the goats. Just keep your expectations for the service a little lower.
