The food took awhile to be prepared. Sushi special that I ordered came with miso soup & house salad. The salad dressing on the house salad was on point with the fresh ginger, super refreshing. Not a bad place but not necessarily a keeper for me. It helps there's parking nearby and the service is very good, as well as clean inside. The atmosphere is comfortable and a nice setting to go with someone. However the food is average tasting. The miso soup is like most restaurants so not standout. The salad was a little disappointing. The bowls have been sitting in a refrigerator for awhile, which is obvious because the lettuce has no crunch or crispness to it. And the dressing needs work. I ordered yakisoba and found it slightly on the sweet side, and had no ginger, which helps make yakisoba pop. My wife had the unidon, which she enjoyed (but I suspect not strongly), and my son had the poke bowl, which he said was ok, but not a keeper. read more

This place has the best variety of Japanese food and sushi in Clarendon. The combo deals are great and overall you get great quality and amount of food for a good price! Service: 3 stars Okay we had 2 people helping us, 1 great and 1 horrible. She took my chopstick while I was eating my rolls!! She knew I had 2 more dishes coming up. I thought she would bring it back or give me a new one... nope. I had to ask for 1 from the other server, so I could actually eat. What kind of place confiscates one's eating utensils fully knowing I wasn't done and as a server who took my order, knowing I had more dishes coming??!! Asahi is one of my go-to lunch spots in the courthouse area. Their lunch specials cannot be beat. I typically get their chicken teriyaki or shrimp teriyaki lunch special bento box, which comes with rice, vegetable tempura, fried gyoza, vegetable sushi, miso soup, and salad. All of that for less than $20! It's always delicious and fresh. The service is great and the ambiance is nice. I can't recommend them enough. You won't regret dining here. read more

Tl;dr Skip this place, under new terrible management. We used to love this place, but we went today for lunch and found out they're under new management. Service and food were unbelievably subpar, especially for Arlington: the sushi smelled overly fishy/old (we got our normal salmon and tuna nigiri) and the new staff was so rude it made me super uncomfortable. There was this tall guy behind the sushi bar making obnoxious comments to guests and the female hostess who was from the old staff - fairly certain he is the new owner. For the price of sushi, I would expect it to be much fresher and better tasting. So disappointed right now, this was our absolute go-to spot during covid and have been coming here for years, even after we moved out of the Courthouse area - guess we'll find a new spot now that knows how to treat their guests. read more

They have a few sushi roll combinations, and I opted on the cheapest combination - 3 simple sushi rolls (on lines 1-2 of the menu?) for $16.95. It included miso soup and house salad, at least! Both complimentary items were pretty standard. I enjoyed the salad dressing and the lettuce were pretty crisp and fresh. I got the yellowtail, tuna, and salmon sushi rolls. There wasn't a lot of fish in the amount of rice they gave, so I felt pretty ripped off. The salmon and yellowtail were pretty tasty! While the quality of the fish were good, I was not a fan of the price. After the meal, I still felt pretty hungry. I was pleasantly surprised by Asahi! We decided to stop in for dinner after seeing a movie on a Saturday evening. We were seated right away. The service was great! The waitress was very helpful, friendly and funny. She checked on us often and the other staff filled our drinks when they got low. We had the tonkotsu ramen and the 3 roll's combination. Each entree came with soup and salad which I thought was a great deal. Sushi was decent, maybe some of the best I've had in the area. Very fresh and flavorful! All around a pretty good place for sushi. My wife wanted sushi for dinner last night, and I kinda wanted to walk to dinner, and Asahi looked like the best option that was open on Mondays and close enough to us to comfortably walk. We weren't disappointed. We were greeted immediately upon entering and quickly seated. The service was quick throughout. While we took our time eating and didn't feel rushed /at all/, we were finished there on our own terms early enough that it seemed almost surprising. We shared four rolls: a California roll, a spicy tuna roll, a shrimp tempura roll, and a "tropical roll," which was topped with mango. That order came with complementary miso soup and a small starter salad. The sushi was good enough that neither of us hit the "sushi wall," where it's sometimes hard to keep eating sushi, but it was more than enough food. All of the rolls were good. The latter two rolls, the "specialty" ones, were notably good among sushi places I've been to, and I already look forward to going back specifically for the tropical roll, while the first two "standard" rolls were probably above average but not remarkably so. They have a respectable cocktail menu, which many sushi places don't. I got the Toki highball and my wife got something described as topical (I forget the name or what was in it, but I tried a sip and it WAS very tropical). Most of the cocktails run $10, though I think the Toki highball is the outlier at $12... That's reasonable anywhere, and a deal for a place with a convenient Arlington location! While we didn't get sake, I read the sake menu, and not only were the prices reasonable but the menu included detailed descriptions of a dozen or so sakes, each rated on a sweet to dry scale that was explained understandably at the bottom of the page. I might go back just to learn a little more about sake, and if more places had sake me he's like theirs, I'd order it more. For those looking for a beer, the prices were also great. They offer a few domestics (including Miller and Yuengling) for $5.45. While it's not a "beer bar," they have a few other beers at each of at least two higher, but affordable for the brands, price levels. We didn't order additional appetizers, sides, or desserts, but the prices for them would have been very reasonable. The menu also suggested they have good deals on lunch specials. I'll definitely be back. And, I could easily see adding an extra star to this already positive review someday when I get around to having one of their lunch specials if it delivers like their sushi dinner did. read more

What a great sushi spot, conveniently located next to the Courhouse metro and AMC. We had no problem getting a table on a Sunday night before our movie. The service was polite and speedy. The main value of this spot is their sushi combos. Our table of two got two combos, which is a great deal for six different rolls and allowed us to sample a variety of their offerings. I ordered a ton of nigiri. I felt that the nigiri was very reasonably priced for the quantity of food I had received. I've been to other sushi restaurants that pack a ton of rice with a small amount of fish. However, Asahi gives you a sizeable portion of both sushi rice and seafood. I was in the area and craving Japanese food (imho, we have less than stellar options on the MD side of the DMV), so I ordered the donkatsu bento for myself and the bulgogi bento for my partner (at her request). Lunch special made it $14.95 each, I believe. Restaurant was super empty when I went in - but it looked like the sort of place that would be nice for a date night or even just a work lunch. I was surprised at how much food came with the meals! We each got a miso soup, tempura vegetables, gyoza, roasted veggies, a salad, and four pieces of California roll. Definitely hadn't been expecting the generous portion. The roasted veggies, tempura veggies, and gyoza were wonderful. Tempura veggies were still crispy, the gyoza was super tasty - crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside. Roasted veggies were nicely flavored. The donkatsu itself was nice as well. If I had to critique anything, it would be that I could've used just a little bit more rice with the meal and also that they just used the crab stick in the California roll (as opposed to the nicer crab salad). Located in Arlington near the AMC courthouse plaza. Dined in with friends on a Friday night at Asahi. It was a pleasant experience. The inside had a nice welcoming ambiance. All the staff were wearing masks properly and were proficient at serving us. The menu was pretty vast. I got to try a bunch of food since I was in a group. The noodle dishes we tried were ramen, udon, and yakisoba. All were very good. The tonkatsu ramen broth was especially really yummy. I also got to try shrimp shumai and some fried dumplings. In terms of sushi, they were all very fresh and delicious. They were generous with the portion size. They were very busy with both dine in and take out orders. Good to see them doing well. We had high hopes since it's reviewed so highly here. This was the only place where you get one tiny slice of pork and a single leaf of vegetable in $17 ramen. Also, the resentment from the cook to include a few cents worth of vegetables in udon with tempura....I know times are hard but that is going too far. I hope they can resolve this. It's a no from me. My boyfriend and I went here for a quick dinner after a long day. We arrived about 50 minutes before closing-- annoying I know, but hear me out; there were other people inside, and we were going to be done before they actually closed because we're just not those people. The host greeted us, and had us wait while he asked permission to seat us-- again, 50 min before the posted closing time. Right off the bat, we were uncomfortable. We were really apologetic and said that we would leave, but he showed us to the table without responding to the concerns. It was extremely apparent that the host and our server were absolutely infuriated that we decided to dine with them. Now, I'm a reasonable person, my boyfriend and I have both worked in food service before-- we know we were being annoying by coming late, but the rudeness was excessive. The server greeted us by staring at us with his iPad in hand. We quickly ordered, and he just said "okay" repeated the order, and walked away. The host served us water, little did we know, it was the only water we'd receive. Our meals came with soup and a salad. The server dropped them off quickly, which was one the few redeeming qualities of this restaurant-- quick service! He didn't bring us silverware, and walked away quickly as to not be pestered with such a big ask. We later flagged him down and requested silverware for our salads. He brought one fork. Honestly, I'll give it to him-- that was hilarious. Good for him. So we just grabbed our own chopsticks from the nearby bar top so we could quickly eat our appetizers. The entrees were then brought out-- Chirashi and Sakedon, accompanied by a couple sushi rolls. My food was great, and the server was kind enough to bring us some small bowls for soy sauce, but unfortunately forgot the soy sauce. Thankfully we pillaged from the nearby bar again. My boyfriend however, had to debone his salmon. It was unfortunate that the server didn't pass that along to him-- but don't worry, he quickly figured it out upon his first bite! We ate in about 12 minutes, and requested the check from the host because we didn't, and wouldn't, see the server again. We paid the bill and got the hell out of there-- we left 10 minutes before the restaurant closed. So to recap; extremely poor service, and boney salmon. We will never be back. If you're looking for a better experience and better sushi I would recommend your local gas station, or the cafeteria at Virginia Hospital Center. At least the cashier will acknowledge your existence as something other than an irritation. read more

This was a low-middle tier for Japanese food, and definitely even lower if you consider all Japanese food in the DMV. My partner and I ordered Tonkatsu ramen and gyoza, which also came with miso soup and a salad. The miso + salad was...okay, but nothing to write home about. The gyoza were actually pretty good! The spicy tonkatsu is actually just tonkatsu with togarashi so...take that information as you will. I honestly have gotten better developed broth from the frozen packs at Hmart though, and with the lack of toppings, it just wasn't worth what you can get in the area for the price.
