Wanted to try something different for dinner and we stumbled across Akeno Sushi Bar in Old Town (an absolute great find!) It's a super cute, whimsical spot, and I'm honestly surprised I hadn't come across it sooner. We decided to sit in the bar area so we could catch one of the FIFA World Cup games, which made the experience even more fun. Our server was incredibly attentive and friendly. He took the time to walk us through the menu and helped us decide what to order since everything sounded amazing. For cocktails, I had the Tokyo Side Car, and it was perfectly crafted. For food, we went with the crab rangoon (I'm a sucker for those lol), the chicken gyoza, and the yakisoba noodles. The noodles were definitely the highlight of the night, flavorful and cooked to perfection. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I'll definitely be back to try more items on the menu!

Came here on a Sunday night. Did not have a reservation and was able to get a table for two. Generous cuts of fish. Yellowtail jalapeno was good. The oysters mushroom yakitori not as good as it was last time. Almost like they aren't cooking it on the grill but par cooking or steaming before. Took much less time to come out but taste and texture was a major tradeoff. Service is fine no complaints. The sake was good. I think we got the hakkaisan honjozo. May be spelling wrong.

Gorgeous place with eloquent dining. The service is a pleasant surprise, thanks Gigi! The crab rangoon is a definite here! Nothing like the competitors from the past with a refreshing twist. Kinda smokey or extra zing to each bite. Enjoy your favorite sushi or fried rice!

One of the finest sushi places we have ever went to in Alexandria. Gigi was our server. She provided professional and spectacular service with warmth & smiles. The decor was beautiful. I loved the royal blue velvet plush seating areas where we dined. The design & decor was very luxe and pleasing to the eye. The bathrooms were clean and had unique Asian decor in it. The food was filling, delicious, and was served quickly after ordering. We ordered crab Rangoon for appetizers - the best I ever had. They contained real crab and had a little spiciness in it. I had the fatty tuna specialty roll and wish I had ordered the specialty scallop roll. My husband ordered the fried rice with crab & shrimp. Highly recommend this sushi restaurant. It has only been open for 6 months in Old Town. I have been to a multitude of different sushi restaurants in the past years, yet this one is one of the most unforgettable sushi places I have ever been to in my life.

Stopped by Akeno Sushi in Old Town Alexandria for dinner and left wondering why it took me so long to try this place. First off, the service was excellent from the moment we walked in until we rolled ourselves out. Friendly, attentive, and they actually seemed happy to see us--which is always a bonus. The inside is a little bigger than it looks from the outside. It has that casual-cool vibe: modern, comfortable, and the kind of place where you could either have a quiet dinner or settle in with friends and a few rounds of sushi and sake. Now... let's talk food. Avocado Salad - perfectly ripe avocado sliced thin and drizzled with a sesame dressing over fresh greens. Light, clean, and a solid way to start the evening. Miso Soup - classic, hot, and comforting with little cubes of tofu floating around doing their thing. Exactly what you want after wandering around Old Town in the cold. Caramelized Brussels Sprouts - not something you expect at a sushi spot, but wow. Slightly crispy, a little sweet, and topped with fried garlic slices that basically say, "yes, you will order this again." Then the sushi arrived. We ordered one of the nigiri platters along with a spider roll, and this is where Akeno flexes a little. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, the rice was perfectly balanced, and every bite had that clean, melt-in-your-mouth quality that reminds you why good sushi is so addictive. Fresh. Flavorful. Completely satisfying. Old Town has a lot of places competing for your dinner plans, but if sushi is what you're craving, Akeno absolutely deserves a spot on your list.

Food tasted great, service was fantastic and responsive. Wouldn't complain about a thing.

I really enjoyed finding these gem because I was really hangry and wanted Sushi so I was in the area and glad I stopped by and tried them out! I came here in 2/05/26 and just made it at the tail end of lunch hour so I was able to partake in a few items on the menu. I got for an appetizer shrimp shumai and for the sushi if my memory serves me right I got salmon and tuna and I think a toro roll. I also took home waygu fried rice which was so good and spicy wish it was a larger amount. I stayed until happy hour which I had a couple of whiskey sours which were made amazing. I loved the aesthetics of the restaurant as I've been to another Akeno in Fairfax and this one was definitely larger. I loved the blue booths in the dining area and the bar area the cute single booth that I had to got sit to get the happy hour special...lol I had a couple of glasses of wine that were delicious while I ate my sushi Cabernet Savignon. Great place can't wait to come and enjoy some sushi and drinks during happy hour or lunch again!

My friend and I came here for dinner after doing a rug tufting course. We sat at the bar since they had happy hour. We shared the appetizer sampler with crab rangoons, shrimp sumai, and veggie rolls. Everything was great, I especially loved the shrimp Sumai. We also shared some sushi, which was great. The service was great and the staff was very attentive. When I asked for some hot sauce, I received some promptly. The space is pretty decent sized also. They could use more than one bathroom, but beyond that, it was great. I would definitely come back, especially because I don't find a lot of sushi in old town Alexandria area!

Grabbed some sushi and wontons on my way home from work and I was not disappointed. 10 out of 10, highly recommend this place. Akeno will be my new go to sushi spot. Next time, I will dine in because the atmosphere looked fun and the front hostess was pleasant.

The food was delicious but the service was a bit on the slower side. They were busy and friendly so I'd definitely go back. Just don't go if you're in a rush.

This was my first time at the Old Town location and it did not disappoint. The sushi was so fresh and colorful. The decor is so chic! We tried 3 different sushi's and the chicken wings for lunch. Can't wait to come back!

Yay! New sushi in OT! My husband and I had been wanting to check this place out since it's soft opening sign popped up on their window last month. 5*s--we will definitely be back! The best part of the meal was definitely the service. Our server (I didn't catch her name) was so sweet and helpful. We didn't fee like they were rushing to turn a table; it was a great dining experience. The best bite of food we had was the nigiri, which is always a good sign! The fish was fresh and delicious. We also tried the black garlic ramen and the portion was massive! We will definitely be back to split a bowl on a chilly day. The specialty rolls were yummy and the hamachi was good, but the standouts were definitely the nigiri and ramen! The place itself is beautifully decorated. I love the flatware and plates! We will definitely be back!

Came in here during dinner time on a Saturday night. It was busy, but not too bad, though I would recommend a reservation during a busier time. I sat at the bar for my meal and ordered the Tokyo sidecar cocktail, the mushroom and shishito pepper skewers, and the tonkatsu black garlic ramen. I liked the food here and there's a lot of other things on the menu I'd like to try. It seems like when it's busy, the sushi rolls take a bit longer to come out since they're being made at the sushi bar, but the staff communicates that.

My wife and I arrived around 1:20 p.m. on a Thursday. The lunch crowd was still going strong, which only reinforced that we had picked a popular spot. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill almost immediately. When we walked in, there was no hostess to be found. After waiting about four minutes, she finally appeared and offered us a choice between a small table in the corner or one by the bar. Given how busy the restaurant was, we took the table by the bar. About seven minutes later, someone finally came by to offer us water and explained that our server was busy, but she would help us in the meantime. No problem. We ordered the Avo Goddess Salad and asked that it be split so we could share it. A few minutes later, our server arrived, introduced herself, and we let her know we had already ordered the salad and were ready to place our lunch orders. She was very helpful in guiding my wife toward the Old Bay Shrimp Burger. I was excited to order the Shrimp and Grits until I learned it contained Andouille sausage and, according to our server, couldn't be prepared without it. Since the restaurant highlights that everything is made from scratch, that surprised me. I ended up ordering the Ahi Tuna Salad instead. So far, so good. Then came the frustration. We spent the next 20 minutes slowly picking at our salad, growing increasingly hungry and confused. You know something is wrong when guests who were seated after you begin receiving their meals before you. Finally, at 2:10 p.m., our food arrived: my Ahi Tuna Salad and a Pulled Lamb Sandwich for my wife. Except my wife had ordered the Shrimp Burger. When we pointed out the mistake to what was now our third server, she quickly assured us it would be corrected. A few minutes later, our original server returned and took full responsibility. She explained that the lamb and shrimp items are next to each other in the POS system and she accidentally selected the wrong item. She assured us the Shrimp Burger would be out in two minutes and suggested we enjoy the fries that came with the lamb sandwich while we waited. Unfortunately, another ten minutes passed before the burger finally arrived. Here's where things became truly disappointing: the top bun was still cold--almost frozen. My wife ended up removing it entirely and eating the sandwich with just the bottom bun. At best, the Shrimp Burger was decent, but certainly not worth the wait and frustration. As for my Ahi Tuna Salad, it felt like something I could easily make at home, especially considering the $25 price tag. I'm also not entirely convinced the tuna was particularly fresh. I can't bring myself to give Matt and Tony's one star because the atmosphere is genuinely cool and inviting. So I settled on two stars--mostly for how I felt before the experience unraveled. And listen, I get it. Mistakes happen. We're all human. But as someone who eats out frequently, here's one piece of advice: when a restaurant makes a significant mistake with a customer's order, consider taking that item off the bill. Sometimes that gesture is the only reason a guest decides to come back.
