This place was so good! I had the veggie roll and added cream cheese (sorry) and eel sauce which I would definitely recommend. Many of the underground restaurants in Crystal City have shut down, but I'm glad this one was able to relocate just a bit further away, it's been a mainstay for many years. Tucked away gem. Stopped in spontaneously on a weekday evening and was greeted warmly (by one of the sushi chefs). He informed us that it was self-service and we could order with the cashier whenever we were ready. I opted for maki sushi (yellowtail and salmon) and thought the fish tasted relatively fresh and was good value for the price. The complimentary cup of miso soup was appreciated; reviews indicate that it comes with a $10 order. The chefs worked efficiently and with care. I got thirsty and saw that there were plenty of clean water glasses to choose from, but no water. However, the chef kindly ushered over a glass of water when he noticed my confusion. I had never been to this place, but I was hungry and it has mostly positive reviews. I came here for lunch. I'm a fan of the location and ambience. There's lots of natural light inside, it felt clean, and there's a good amount of seating if you want to dine in (although I imagine they do a lot of take out because there's so many office buildings around). Except for ordering, most things are self-serve: picking up your food when it's ready, getting silverware, sauces, etc. And everything is disposable and mostly plastic, which I did not like, certainly not for the price point. Before I delve into the food, I'll say that customer service was pretty mediocre. I wasn't greeted with a smile, I asked a few questions about the menu and while the person taking my order gave me answered, they seemed pretty disinterested and at times even had to ask probing questions to get more info. There were only two other people in the restaurant at the time, but I was made to feel like I was taking up too much time. Anyway, while I was eating, however, another employee (maybe the manager) asked me if I was doing okay, so that was nice. Now onto the food. I ordered a Teriyaki Chicken Bento and Tuna Avocado Roll. The roll was fine. The fish and avocado tasted fresh, but the rice was as cold and firm. It was likely made earlier in the day a refrigerated, which alters flavor and texture, but this was acceptable. As for the Bento, first the Teriyaki Chicken was terrible. The chicken and the sauce were under seasoned. It feels like they boiled a chicken breast, cubed it, and ladled on some watery teriyaki sauce. The miso soup was also watery, which was disappointing. The sides were honestly the best part: the pickled/ cooked green bean had nice flavor and were still crunchy, the marinated tofu was mild, but still had flavor, and the edamame was steamed well and lightly seasoned with salt. The California Roll was pretty good, it tasted fresher than the Tuna Avocado Roll. It comes with 4 pcs. The tempura shrimp (you get 2), felt previously frozen, like the ones you get in the frozen section of a grocery store. They were fine. What disappoints me most is that these price points are comparable to a full service restaurant. My entire meal was over $30. Between the poor customer service and mediocre food quality, I won't return and cannot recommend this place. read more

I have this thing about having all rolls ordered made directly and they didn't mind at all. They offered to have me purchase a pre-made roll from the "chiller", and happily obliged when I declined. Sushi is very expensive, but the restaurant is clean and quick for a quick lunch between meetings.

I just ordered a specialty roll from them and it took upwards of 40 mins to get my food. There was no one in the establishment when I arrived. Several people came and went after me and they didn't apologize for their delay, and insult to injury, they gave me a dirty look as I left. In this economy they should be grateful for loyal customers, which I was one up until now, and not take anyone's money and time for granted. This has been our number 1 restaurant, and certainly sushi choice, for the last 8 years. As business space closes in the Crystal City underground, they successfully transferred to a new space closer to Art 1 and 12th street. Same great quality in a brighter, comfortable space. This is pretty much the place that I usually go to after work or during lunch breaks at work when I come in to the company. I've had a lot of their sushi, chirashi, and bibimbop, all at different intervals of time. Their fish is really fresh and prepared well, and with their chirashi, there's more fish compared to rice. Also, the miso soup comes free with every order. The bibimbop is really tasty, and the presentation is well. However, compared to high-end restaurants, the fish taste between different fishes isn't quite distinguishable, but this restaurant gives really great value for the price. I used to walk by this place every day when I was working in a place that was connected via the underground walk. At the time they were only open for lunch so closed long before I made it back through on the way home and work was far enough away that the timing never worked. I noticed recently that they seemed to be open later and decided I was finally going to give it a try. It was definitely worth it. The sushi was fresh, it came with a very tasty miso soup and all was all at really affordable prices. You can order ahead for pickup, order and wait which turns out to be pretty quick, grab from a pile of available instant takeout options, or take a spot at the counter. It's really a shop located in a hallway of the crystal city underground that doesn't consist of more than a few seats at the counter but it's definitely worth dropping in or grabbing something as you zoom by. Super impressed from the quality for such a small shop! I had a flight to catch at DCA and was early so I decided to get some food before I got there. I got off the metro one stop early at Crystal City. This mall was connected to the station so I just wandered around. Everything was closed except this so I decided to give it a shot. It really doesn't look like much. Just a small hole in the wall. It's storefront is basically just a bar. I grabbed a salmon special from the case for $12. After I paid he offered me some miso soup (bonus!). Everything was so fresh and tasty. The salmon roll was actually a special roll packed with fish! I thought it just had salmon on top but also had fish, avocado, and cucumber in the center. The salmon was just on top it was wrapped almost all the way around. They don't cut corners here. A little hole in the wall spot in the Crystal City Undergrounds, this sushi spot is always busy with customers sitting at the 4-seat counter or waiting for their takeout. Hesitant, I decided to give this place a try one day and ordered a few of their maki rolls (california, spicy tuna, and salmon avocado) to-go. To my surprise, the rolls were relatively good, generously filled with minimal rice, and wrapped tight so it doesn't fall upon picking up (unlike the rolls at a very well-known organic store I live across the street from that I shall not name). Miso soup is included for free with every order but it's just miso broth. There's no tofu or seaweed. I've been back several times but stick to the maki rolls since those prices are hard to beat ($4-5 a roll) and it's enough to satisfy my sushi craving! The people are very nice and it's very convenient as a resident or nearby worker. I only ordered maki sushi but I took one bite and could not stomach the fishy taste. My family agreed their orders were not very good- they had bento and a specialty roll. It doesn't taste fresh. Their sushi appeared to be precut and fruitflies everywhere. I'm honestly confused by the good reviews and wondering if the area is just starved of good sushi? I didn't have high expectations going in, but when you want sushi, you're willing to take it wherever. I ordered mackerel, egg, and a tuna roll with seaweed salad on top. None of it was terrible, but it wasn't particularly cool. I could've lived with less seaweed on top, and I ended up pulling some of it off the roll. It was an $18 meal, which didn't feel worth it. Sushi Garden is a side shop where you can get a quick fix of... well, sushi dishes, but also a few other simple east azn dishes. Food: I ordered the Bimbimbap for $10. The rice was warm and fluffy and really absorbed the Gochujang sauce. The sauce itself delivers a massive kick that makes you feel it, (and maybe sweat a little) though it's not unbearable. The variety of vegetables delivers a nice cooling contrast to the spice that balances the dish nicely with bean sprouts, carrots, bok choy, among others. The beef was tender and sweet that added a different flavor dynamic when coupled with the dish overall. They also provided a complimentary bowl of miso soup. The Miso was rich and not too salty. It really did warm me up, which is entirely appreciated on a cold day. Service: The food was out within minutes. There's not much else. So fast service for those in a hurry. Atmosphere: The feeling is really of a side / popup shop. They have some Japanese decorations for the front of house that really distinguishes it from its neighbors. Finish: A nice quick service place for those looking for an east Asian taste in the Crystal City Underground.
