This review is NOT for the hibachi side. We went to the sushi bar side instead. We were the only ones in that side, and it looked like it was barely used. Almost like it was used for storage. The place looked like it hadn't been updated in about a decade. It just looked worn out. I was willing to give it a chance though. If the food is good, then I really don't care too much about the decor. The server was attentive. She took our order, and proceeded to make our sushi. I ordered two rolls, a unagi (eel) avocado roll and a Kamikaze roll, with unagi in it too. If you know about unagi, it's supposed to be a cooked meat, and them added to the cold roll. Well, this unagi was cold. It was unsettling. I ate it, but I didn't enjoy it. Hopefully the hibachi is better than that. Whomp whomp! read more

If you are turned off by off-color, politically incorrect humor, this may not be the place for you. The hibachi chefs joke around with clientele and put on a pretty good show. There are a couple of chuckles, but some of it borders on racism and misogyny. The food is very good and well prepared, and it's fun to watch the chefs work (and not joke). I would like to go back here and try the sushi bar sometime. Our large group was able to use the very large grill at the front of the restaurant, and use one chef. That was fun! I was craving for sushi on a Sunday and most sushi places were closed (Sushi Don, Heisei and Maru, etc). This restaurant popped up on google and I decided to give it a try despite the bad reviews. Me and two other friends walked in, and immediately realized how quiet and dead the place was. We sat by the sushi bar, and were the only ones in that room. After we placed our order, a lady walked into the sushi bar and started making our rolls. Our server checked on us one time and refilled our water. When the lady brought out our rolls we were a little disappointed in the appearance of the food. It wasn't bad, but just not as good as what you'd get at other sushi places in Lafayette/West Lafayette. It was obvious to us that the cook wasn't experienced and probably was just rolling things together while following a instruction manual..... Overall the experience was below average. The sushi tasted ok. For the same price you can definitely get better sushi rolls at other places. The restaurant was big but seemed very dead. I don't know how they stayed in business.... read more

Whenever my boyfriend and I want to indulge in sushi, we come here! Every experience we have had has been great, and we often bring other friends with us who say the same. Our favorite part about the restaurant is the sushi, specifically the "sushi boats." We typically order the sushi boat for two, which is enough sashimi and sushi to be filling, along with an extra specialty roll or two simply because they taste so good we don't mind being stuffed! We have tried the hibachi grill once and had a blast. While I understand others have been offended by his humor, my friends and I found it pretty funny. This place had multiple red flags from the get go. There was a sign on the entrance that said "out of sushi" which was alarming because the place claimed to be a sushi restaurant. Next, they say they're a steakhouse, but they have one cut of meat, a new york strip. The food is INCREDIBLY overpriced, and they are very stingy with portions of the cheap food (rice, vegetables, etc). They had only two sauces, and no hot sauce or chili sauce. When asked why they had no chili sauce, the chef made up a bs excuse about living in an area too overpopulated with whites, even though there are many asian markets in the area. I've been here 2 or 3 times and ordered hibachi steak and chicken. The food is good and the prices are decent, one of the only true hibachi grills in the area. Usually the restaurant is really empty too so the atmosphere is great for a gathering of close friends to talk without needing to nearly yell across the table to hear. The staff are all really friendly and accommodating, I personally don't eat sushi so I can't comment on that, but the hibachi was a tasty and entertaining experience! read more

A visit to Asahi Japanese steakhouse takes you into a dismal colored lobby which is serviced by a minimal staff which leads to slow attention from the start. After being led through the antiquated hibachi restaurant and ordering drinks and entrees, served a very off-tasting onion soup and watery salad. The hibachi fried rice was dry and the various proteins were under seasoned. The sushi had no flavor and was not fresh tasting. It was best in this case to just pay the overpriced bill and commit to not return to the restaurant. read more

Asahi is sort of a sad version of Benihana's. The hibachi is sub-par, with the chef not having any real talent or skill. Although I haven't actually eaten anything from the hibachi grill, I watched the chef cook other guests' orders, and all he did was spray some soy sauce on a bunch of fried rice and meat. In my opinion, not really worth the price. I did try the sushi, and it was also pretty disappointing. The rice was hard, and it seems like the only sauce they know how to use is the chipotle sauce. If you're familiar with really good Japanese or any Asian cuisine, this is going to be a huge disappointment. read more

I went here for a friend's birthday dinner and the food is yummy and the prices are great. I really love teppanyaki. It's like a cooking show in front of you! The decorations are pretty strange here. You have fish tanks everywhere and the atmosphere is just a bit ..quirky. The chef tries to be funny and cheeky. He asked me "Do you have a boyfriend" and he started flirting with me in front of everybody which was pretty ridiculously funny. Also he started asking my friend if she wanted to GO TO MOTEL 6 WITH HIM. And he started talking about how he loves going to Hooters Restaurant so he can see girls in short shorts. But the food he made was definitely very good and satisfying. So, ladies if you go there, just take things easy and expect the chef to say surprising things to you and you will be fine. I enjoy the hibachi grill and the cooks have been there for years, so they will often recognize locals and start a conversation. The food is good, but overpriced--especially dinner! It is not hard to walk out of their spending $60-80 and I've never felt it was worth it in the end. I enjoy their sushi menu, but if you are looking for authentic food for a better price I would recommend Sushi Don, Heisei, or Kokoro before coming here. read more

The food here is passable. No comment on sushi as I have an unbreakable aversion to food that starts its life in water- I try to break it a few times a year to no avail. The steak, chicken, soup and other tid bits I've had here were all just fine. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing special. The chefs range from slightly entertaining to laugh out loud comedy. I've never seen any amazing ninja knife and spatula skills here, but their grill top parlor tricks and sense of humor tend to make up for it. Saki helps the experience. read more

I've been here for dinners a few times and this place is a good time. Table side food prep Japanese steakhouse style but cheaper then I thought it would be. Some of the chefs can be real characters. I have only been for dinner and can highly recommend it. I haven't been for lunch but they advertise specials. I have stuck with the filet since it was done well the first few times and as memory recalls about $12 or so. I have never been disappointed with it. I have been wanting to try Asahi since I moved to Lafayette four years ago. I've been struggling to find decent Japanese food in the area, and thought Asahi was my chance. It turned out to be pretty good. We were their first customers of the night for dinner, and it was rather awkward until our food arrived. We waited in the lobby for the hostess, who seemed inconvenienced at our arrival. Once she sat us, three of our party decided to go with the grill and I decided to get sushi. The sushi came out much earlier than the chef did to prepare the tableside grill. I got three different rolls, one with shrimp tempura, which was my favorite. The rolls were priced about what I expected--between $3 and $10, depending on ingredients. Others in our party got chicken, filet, salmon, and shrimp. Rave reviews all around. I tried the filet and wasn't a huge fan, though I'm not a big red meat fan to begin with; the chicken was fantastic. The entrees came with choice of fried or white rice; vegetables; mediocre miso soup; and salad. For four people, we ran about $80-90. Of course, that was dinner, so it's probably more expensive than lunch. I'd be more willing to go back to Asahi if the prices were reduced. By the time we left, we were still the only patrons in the restaurant. As for the ambience, the decor seems like it's been there since the 80s. The server (also the hostess) checked in every once in a while and didn't seem to be interested in our table--even though, again, we were the only table in the restaurant. My wife and I ate here last weekend. We stopped in at around 8:45 pm on a Saturday and we were the only ones there. We had some trepidation. We believe no customers are an indicator of below average food. In spite of the vacant booths, we pressed on with our expedition into unknown sushi waters like Richard Byrd braving the frozen tundra. Yes. Exactly like that. We ordered some booze. My wife requested the Zinfandel. She enjoyed it. It had enough backside punch and mild mid level fruit notes that it created a nice complexity that danced on the palette. I'm sure it was just from a box in the back. I ordered the Sapporo. I appreciated the frosty mug it came with. The ginger dressing on the salads was pleasant enough. I've had worse. The miso soup was well done though. Not too salty. Not too watery. Jusssst right. Now on to the sushi. I'd like to preface this part by saying that everyone that eats sushi thinks they're a connoisseur. Sometimes, to pepper in credibility, they'll mention eating sushi somewhere foreign. I hate those people. If you do, just know I hate you. It was above average. Explain something to me. Isn't Asahi a chain restaurant? And shouldn't the food be at least comparable from place to place. We love the Asahi restaurant in Palatine and go there often. We were coming through Indiana this weekend and stopped here to eat and it was awful. The sushi was far from fresh and the meat from the hibachi grill was overcooked and tough. The chef seemed to be more interested in leering and hitting on the all the women there than taking his job seriously. I suggest they look for a new chef to bring the level of this restaurant to what it should be. The Asahi in Lafayette gives this chain a bad name! read more

I wish I could eat here on a weekly basis. I usually prefer sitting in the sushi bar as it is more intimate and has a better atmosphere. The sushi is reasonably priced and prefer it to any of the other restaurants in town that serve it. The service is usually pretty good. We have enjoyed this restaurant in the past however our latest visit was very disappointing. We went with our 2 grand sons and the experience was awful and over priced. My wife ordered filet and she was served steak and a poor cut at that, WE NOW have to pay extra to get fried rice and when we asked for the steamed which comes with we were denied. Our 2 grandsons had the hibachi chicken kids meals which don't come with a drink you pay an additional $2 for those.So a childs meal without the show is $10. We will not be returning, I will drive to Indy for a better experience and probably save money. read more

As with most Japanese steakhouses, Asahi runs on the pricey side with most entrees costing $20+. Relative to others in Chicago this is may seem quite cheap, but considering the low cost of living in Lafayette, Asahi is in the same price range as most of the fine dining spots in the downtown section. Two factors in evaluating a Japanese steakhouse are the quality of the food and the quality of the show in preparing the food. A great show can easily compensate for mediocre food and vice versa. Unfortunately, Asahi merely serves mediocre food and a two-bit show. The chefs simply cooked(well, overcooked mostly) the food with minimal artistry. A few instances of aerial food or fancy knife work would have greatly improved the experience. While many restaurants will take the time to hand write "Thank you" or some other pleasantry on the check at the end of the meal, the staff at Asahi took the time to hand highlight the "Gratuity Not Included" portion of the bill. Typically I leave a 20% tip, but after seeing that, I pulled out some loose change to get as close to 15% as I could. read more

First time here. Took a few mins to get sat. I was excited for some fresh sushi rolls. The menu we were given didn't have sushi on it. As soon the server arrived I felt like she rushed us and didn't even get a chance to ask about the sushi. I guess that's my fault because I didn't stop her. Anyway. I tried the chicken and filet combination as my meal. It filled me up and was really good. I would go back. The meal came with a salad and a soup. Food: Average Hibachi "Performance": Underwhelming Service: Pretty good. My boyfriend and I came in around noon on a Friday and the place was almost empty. We each ordered 1 sushi roll and 1 hibachi entree, averaging a price of ~$30 per person (including tip). We were served some soup and a salad before our food arrived. The soup was very salty and was just broth with fried onion garnish and some slices of mushroom. The salad was fresh with pretty good dressing. The sushi was average. My roll had shrimp tempura, avocado, and shrimp on top. I felt like it was a decent amount of food for the price, but lacked flavor and was underwhelming. The hibachi was average as well. Some fried rice with egg and soy sauce, some mixed veggies, and your choice of protein. Protein serving was a bit small. Flavor was ok. As far as the hibachi "performance", it was just the initial fireball and an egg trick. Not much else. A lot of people were complaining about the cook, but ours was inoffensive. He was Hispanic and made some small jokes about learning from Taco Bell, making us tacos, and drinking beer/tequila. Nothing outrageous or offensive. Gotta love the little Japanese restaurant in an adobe-style building (was formerly a Pepe's Mexican Restaurant). I've only eaten on the sushi side, but the sushi is of pretty decent quality. Prices are pretty standard, but the rolls left me satisfied after a good portion. Its on the opposite end of town, so I only occasionally eat there, but I like making the trip every so often. read more
