The food here is very good with unique taste from other Teppan steakhouse. I ordered the shrimp and chicken and it was very tasty, with the cook adding hot sauce to the meal. The soup and salad was very good and fresh. Cooked very well and perfectly! The service was ok, it's only one server, one cook, and one lady that cleans. I think they are comfortable with this, but it makes you have a long wait because everyone has to wait for the cook to prepare food per table. The ambiance does need to be updated, since the decor is not fancy at all. That doesn't mean a lot but it does affect the experience. It's very old fashioned and can be up-kept better. Unexpectedly in the Greater Lafayette area on a Tuesday night without dinner plans, my son and I decided we were in the mood for teppanyaki-style cuisine. After consulting Yelp, we quickly settled on Mount Fuji Steakhouse and arrived at 7:40pm. Initially I was afraid the restaurant might be closed, because the parking lot was nearly empty, but after walking past the faded and hard to read front sign, we were pleasantly surprised to find the entrance unlocked. It took a few minutes before a staff member noticed us and showed us to a hibachi table. After some minutes the server returned and took our orders with zero conversation. The restaurant being all but deserted, the aged chef soon appeared, and after asking the standard questions, proceeded to cook our dinners. While he was friendly in answering any question we asked, he did not otherwise engage us in conversation. Likewise while clearly skilled in the art of teppanyaki, his performance was only entertaining in the basic sense, and was, I felt, generically indistinguishable from any of a dozen other hibachis I have visited in four states. There was nothing bad about it, there just was not anything special about it either. My son and I both felt the food was good to very good. Personally I found that my steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, while my son said his shrimp were juicy and delicious. We both liked the taste of the vegetables, and having the fried rice on the side in bowls was a nice touch. Both of us were surprised and amused to discover that the chef's 'secret cooking sauce' was a bottle of Dad's Rootbeer! We might or might not have liked dessert, but were never asked, and were instead presented with the bill with nary a word from the server. Both of us were disappointed that we were never offered drink refills. In keeping with the low-staff interaction theme, when we went to pay, no one was at the hostess station, and the chef had to yell for someone to go up front and cash us out. I can't speak highly enough about this place. It use to be a staple for my husband and I when we were in college at Purdue (2003-2007). Tonight, we were able to take our children to this location for the first time. It was almost nostalgic. So many of the things we loved (decor, staff, food) were just as great as they were 20 years ago. The staff even recognized us from many years ago prior. This is authentic Japanese Hibachi. The hours aren't great, so you have to be selective about when you come. You get offered two different dressings for your salad, and if you've never had either it's going to be a fun surprise if you like it or not (I didn't care for the ginger one too much). It's very small inside and not a lot of space, but I went right when it opened at 5 on Thursday and no one else showed up until around 5:30. The food was ok, it seemed to leave a lot more oil on my plate afterward than other places I've been to. The chicken was cooked in root beer, which I thought was an interesting choice and didn't love the flavor. Probably one of my least favorite hibachi places I've been to. read more

I made reservations by calling the restaurant and speaking with a live person. Discussed the best time for a reservation on Easter Sunday, and agreed upon 1:00 pm. We arrived a little earlier than 1:00 pm to find the restaurant closed and the parking lot empty. We drove hours from our home to meet up with our daughters, one of whom also drove hours. This was to be our Easter dinner celebration, but we were left in the cold despite having a reservation. This gave us time to look around. We found a lot of filth behind the restaurant, it is dated, and has a general unkept and dirty feel to it. Obviously, I cannot speak to service or food quality, but they are not reliable and do not offer a pleasant dining experience. Strongly recommend that you stay away, especially if traveling from out of town to meet your Purdue student for a special meal. They may leave you all alone. read more

While I enjoyed the cook making our meal, the hostess was not very friendly or accommodating. We were five minutes late for our reservation and she kept staring at the clock as if she should not serve us. Or sit us and enjoy the show of the cooking :-) the funny thing about it was they were only two other tables being used when they were about 25 that were not being used. You would think this was a high dollar experience but it was a very low budgeted restaurant. Fabulous pre covid, still fabulous now. If you've never had Teppanyaki before, this is the place to go. The cook is a very nice and funny guy. I won't ruin the experience by posting any spoilers, but you're in for a laugh. If you act like a wet mop, he'll sense that and probably won't bother you much, but why would you want to? This place is an experience as well as dining. It isn't a huge place so be prepared to wait if they're busy. There are about 8 spots to sit around the grill, and he cooks for everyone that gets seated there. Sometimes it's just you, or it could be two or three other couples! Now they seat less to a table to keep you socially distanced. Watching him cook is oddly satisfying, and it's served right in front of you piping hot. Very delicious. He likes to offer you different pieces of meat too if people get different things. For example: my husband usually gets steak and chicken. I get shrimp. He'll give me a piece of steak, and a piece of chicken to try while giving my husband two pieces of shrimp. All entrees are served with miso soup and salad. I highly recommend the sesame dressing. I tried red bean ice cream for the first time, and it was so delicious! It kind of tasted like candy. I will forever come to this place until it's gone or I die. Whatever comes first. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out on a Sunday afternoon. It was quiet, there was only one other party of two there. The decor is definitely outdated and it seemed as though this has been around for awhile. The waitress was friendly and welcoming. We both ordered the steak and chicken hibachi with gyoza as an appetizer. Our salads came first. I chose the ginger sauce, while my bf chose the sesame one. I liked his better, but I just wanted to try something different! Our gyozas came out next. It was fresh and really hot! Once it cooled down, the flavor was great, and the sauce complimented it. Next, the chef came out with his cart. He was very friendly and explained the different sauces that paired with the meats. Even though we ordered the chicken and steak, he added a couple pieces of shrimp, which we appreciated. The portion was very large and I really liked the sautéed vegetables! Overall, the food was great but it is a bit overpriced. As someone stated in a previous review, you are paying for the show. You can get a similar meal at a cheaper cost at a different Japanese restaurant. It was a good early dinner date though for my boyfriend and I. We had a reservation and were greeted and seated around the hibatchi table immediately. We sipped warm saki and feasted on an appetizer of tempura while the chef prepped the food. The hibatchi entreés were prepared before our eyes on the large, hot griddle, and the chef was quite jovial! Everyone received more food than we could finish eating. The place is family operated and they were all very kind. We had steak, vegetable, and shrimp entrees and all was delicious. We will return! Can fit up to 8 around each hibatchi table. read more

My family enjoyed the food so much! We ordered chicken, fish and yakisoba which we thought were delicious. The soup served before the meal was light and had a lovely spring onion flavor. The agedashi tofu was perfect, and the only thing I wouldn't re-order was the tempura as it was not Japanese tempura and my child could tell the difference. The service and food were really good overall - even the affordable glass of red wine. To be fair to this restaurant, as I saw a previous reviewer lowered their rating, they seem understaffed. We made same day reservations which they were able to accommodate, but I observed that the lone hibachi chef and the hostess/server never took a break between tables that were booked solid. The table before us was crammed with young men and after cooking for our table the chef turned around and began cooking for the adjacent table. I've gone here twice, and I won't lie, not their biggest fan. It's fun, it's just that teppanyaki isn't really for me. My brother. however, LOVES IT. The important thing to remember is that you go there for the show. The chefs are performers and entertainers. You're there to have a good time, interact, see some fireworks, laugh with friends. In that, the chefs succeed. They're great and pretty funny as long as you're open to chat and interact. Be aware, because there are multiple stations, during busier hours when there's multiple tables going it can get a bit loud. Food has kind of a one note flavor and kind of salty for me. Actually, I would see most of it was pretty dry. Even the rice. However, I've also noticed that some of my friends who have kinda only ever eaten American Midwest cuisine seem to like it a good bit better than the rest of us. The other problem for me is that I just had trouble getting to it. College student, no car, relies on bus and friends. And when I actually have to have a friend drive me somewhere or recommend a place, it just isn't here. However, the food is cheap and plentiful and can be pretty fun. I've lived in Lafayette my whole life (except for 6 years in the service) and had only been here once when I was a teenager. We were driving by to go somewhere else to eat and I joked about stopping at Mt. Fuji for dinner. So we tried it. The food was really good! I got the Steak Habachi and the spouse got the Fish Habachi. The only thing you need to be aware of is it is a Habachi restaurant. So you sit at a table with others. They aim to wait until a table is full and orders are taken before your chef comes out and cooks everyone's food. So if you come in hungry, expect this and order an appetizer. I'm deducting one star as the high chair they had was broken. Don't let the faded sign and outside appearance of the place deter you. It was clean and the staff was friendly. Recommended!! I really do enjoy Mount Fuji. I have no real reason for coming here so seldom, but the Lafayette/West Lafayette area has so many Japanese restaurants that it kind of slips through my mind. My husband and I hadn't been for a year or so, so we decided to check it out again after church this past Sunday. They do not offer sushi-strictly hibachi style cooking and a few appetizer choices. Their prices can't be beat and the cook is less "in your face" than some of the other hibachi chefs I've experienced. We ordered gyoza for appetizer and my husband ordered the scallops while I selected the filet & shrimp combination. The entrees come with your choice of soup or salad--we both enjoy their salad with ginger dressing; fried rice is included-Asahi charges extra if you want this; and mixed vegetables. The sauces they serve on the side are good as well. I think their cooking can sometimes be a bit salty, but overall I like this place. I would recommend it if you are looking for affordable hibachi. We have only ever been for lunch, so I'm not sure if their dinner menu is bigger or not. Good, open seating with several grills so they can accommodate large groups! read more

I called for a carry out order which has never been a problem. I called about 5:15pm. The lady told me they were too busy, could I call back at 8:00pm? I was dumbfounded. They usually just prepare it as they are preparing other meals at a table. Of course, I am not doing that. I ordered from their competitor which was not a problem and is usually the busier of the two Japanese steakhouses. This is after a few months ago when I called to order for lunch and was told they are opening only for dinners now because it is too hard to do both. We ordered the shrimp and they were spoiled. We could smell the stench from the time they hit the grill. We informed the cook, but he acted as if he could not smell what we were smelling. He finished cooking and attempted to serve them to us. I declined, but my sisters both trusted his word. They both regretted that decision. He told the manager to take them off our bill. She came to our table, and instead of recognizing the issue, she proceeded to tell us how she's never served a bad shrimp in her 21 years working here. I went there for a birthday celebration a couple nights ago and was very happy with the experience. the restaurant feels open - they have windows with light coming in unlike another hibachi place I went to nearby once upon a time. The service was good - waitress wasn't exactly jovial, but was quick and efficient. Our chef had a nice upbeat demeanor and wasn't too cutesie - sometimes those hibachi guys get annoying. We started with the miso soup with salad. Soup was not bad, ginger salad dressing left something to be desired, but not saying it was bad, just have had better. They dont seem to have a website, so I will not be using authentic food names here: Appetizers were a steak kebab in a sesame sauce. Fantastic. We also had the deep-fried tofu. The exterior was delicious as was the sauce, but I thought the tofu itself was too large. Would have been better to have more, smaller pieces to get a lower tofu/exterior ratio. Overall the appetizers were very good. Our main courses were filet/shrimp and a chicken/pasta number. It of course came with fried rice & vegetables. The rice was good. The vegetables were just ok. Shrimp and filet were outstanding as was the pasta. Never had a noodle dish quite like that and the noodles had a lot more flavor than I was expecting. Chicken was just ok. Overall, my rating also takes into account how bad the other hibachi place in town was the last time I went there a couple years ago. The two restaurants are not comparable. After having Mount Fuji recommended to us several times we decided to try it out. This restaurant is definitely underrated and hidden under the undeserved popularity of the other local Japanese steakhouse Asahi. Besides a slight conversational language barrier the staff was extremely friendly. There were only a few customers in the restaurant when we went later on a Saturday evening. The cook was entertaining, skilled, very friendly to the young children at the table, and most importantly the food was very good. We had the shrimp, steak, and chicken. I would recommend all three. The cook made sure to drop a piece of each meat in their respective sauce dishes in front of you to be sure you used the appropriate sauce for each meat. We will definitely be back to Mount Fuji in the future and we will be sure to bring more people with us to be sure Mount Fuji becomes a popular Lafayette restaurant destination. read more

Although the design of the building and the inside is a little outdated, the food was very good. We loved the soup, salad, and the main course. Our chef was amazing and entertaining. I got the filet mingon hibachi which was soooo good and my boyfriend got the chicken and steak and he was also very happy with his meal.
