So for years I've heard from coworkers about this place having good food and it always seems to be packed on the weekends so I finally made the trip over to check it out and I must say it did not live up to the hype. When first entering you can tell the place is in immediate need for some remodeling. It looks old and dark/dated but maybe that's the feel the owners want to be stuck in. I saw ceiling fans wobbling and squeaking, floors were very creaky and it had a mildew type smell in the back where we sat. Now on to the food. My wife had steak which was not seasoned and garlic mashed potatoes which were not hot. I had a slab of ribs which were decent, sauce was definitely different and sides were green beans that were flavorless and scalloped potatoes that also were lacking on the flavor tip. Tried again after a very disappointing prime rib dinner about a year ago (tough overcooked prime rib, mediocre sides, watery iceberg cheap lettuce salad). My prime rib this time was cooked fine but only 1/2 was edible due to all the fat. At least I could cut some meat away from it. Salad was worse than I'd get at a fast food place. Can't recommend. We had the best experience at this Mountain Jack's! We drove here, 3+ hours, out of pure nostalgia! As a child I remember my parents going to Mountain Jacks in Portage, Mi for so many of their special occasions! I got to tag along, since I was the much later born baby of our family - what a treat of the most amazing proportions that I had no idea at the time how blessed I was!! Fast forward at least two decades, I've recently lost the last of my parents , I'm doing some random google search one day and come across a Mountain Jacks, still in operation?! I was SHOCKED and oh so surprised, in the very best of ways! My husband started to plan a time when we could go together. He started by calling and speaking with the sweetest lady who is the owner of this location. He ordered a gift card for me as a surprise and she mailed it with a sweet, handwritten note. I was so delighted to see that piece of mail arrive with that very familiar Mountain Jack's logo!! We ended up planning a date night away and made our way down to Mountain Jack's on a recent Friday night in February. We didn't make any reservations and only had to wait about 10 minutes for the most lovely table! (We arrived around 7:30pm) You can head to the bar for a drink while you wait if you'd like! We ordered a couple of cocktails and soon the hostess came to take us to the most comfortable spot which was a cute half circle booth in the back! My husband and I both loved our spot for the night! Soon after being seated the most lovely waiter named Michael came - he was absolutely top notch the entire time evening! He had excellent suggestions and made just the right amount of very kind conversation throughout our meal! Couldn't have asked for better service! The first thing Michael brought us was a very perfect round loaf of fresh, hot bread with butter! Yum!! You know a meal is going to be good when it starts with hot bread! ;) We started by ordering the crab stuffed mushroom appetizer- delicious!! Great choice! Each entree comes with two sides AND soup or salad! My husband and I both ordered the salad and just like I remember from my childhood, it comes out on this huge circular platter and the waiter makes a personalized table-side salad for you! This is the most amazing concept! I love a salad bar, which it seems like no one has anymore, but this is even better than a salad bar! How could this get any better?! Homemade salad dressing choices!! Michael offered us a number of house made dressings! The ranch was delicious and this salad did not disappoint! I ordered the prime rib with au gratin potatoes and sautéed green beans. My husband ordered the Black and Bleu ribeye with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Both of our meals were ridiculously delicious but I have to say his ribeye was our favorite and I never order a ribeye steak!! ;) SO, SO good!! After our meals Michael brought out a dessert tray! I haven't seen this done in YEARS! I love a visual dessert tray and it worked! We ordered dessert, but probably wouldn't have had we not laid eyes on all of the glorious options!! I wanted a sampler platter dessert, but alas, I had to pick only one!! We landed on the mile high mud pie and it was - once again - over and above our expectations!! We sort of splurged on this experience - ordering an appetizer, multiple drinks, meals, dessert, etc... we don't do this very often. But when our bill arrived we were both shocked at the value! I'm not a numbers person, I don't add things up as I go - I was so pleased with the total cost, even after ordering every single thing I wanted!! GREAT PRICES!!! We drove all that way just for a meal at Mountain Jack's! It was worth every penny and we are already planning our next trip down! I honestly don't understand how this place won any award, unless there is an award for getting steak temperatures wrong. Six of us came here for steak, and five out of six steaks were cooked incorrectly. I ordered medium rare, but it came out basically raw. I sent it back, and somehow the second try was still raw. At that point I was starting to wonder if the kitchen thinks "medium rare" just means "still alive." We were there for almost two hours, and most of that time I was eating sides, especially the potatoes, because the steak was simply not edible. If I wanted to pay steakhouse prices for potatoes, I could have just stayed home. My friends' steaks were just as bad. Some were overcooked, and some were supposed to be medium well but came out rare. For a steakhouse, that is the bare minimum, and they could not even get that right. The owner was also extremely cold and didn't seem to care at all. They promised a discount, but in the end they only discounted my meal, which is funny because I was basically the one who spent two hours eating potatoes. This was easily the worst steakhouse experience I have ever had. I would not recommend this place unless you enjoy raw steak, long waits, and being treated like your time does not matter. read more

The potato and bacon soup was also really nice. They are known for their prime rib and I split a standard cut and there was quite a generous portion. We also had a rare ribeye that we had to send back due to overcooked. The second ribeye was perfect and the slice was thicker, so it was a great seasoned ribeye. The food was good. If you get a salad, they come out with a salad wheel with at least 10 choices to add to your lettuce. It was pretty awesome. We had the appetizer sampler which included stuffed mushrooms, buffalo shrimp and potato skins. All of which was delicious. I had the Prime rib, since that's what they are know for and it didn't disappoint but i will say stayaway from the au gratin potatoes (not good). They only thing that I was really disappointed with is my drink. It was the Swet Tart martini. Good in flavor but extremely weak in alcohol. It was a martini drink but literally tasted like juice. The service was ok. It was only my table and someone at the bar in the section yet service was a bit slow for me but not bad . Just slow. This place is fantastic. I'd never been and went with colleagues for a casual dinner, one of us was craving a steak. I'm so glad we went and can't believe I've been sleeping on this place the whole time I've lived here. Our service was excellent and answered a few questions we had about the menu. We ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms to start and they were delicious. The table side salad might have been one of my favorite dining things ever! I love a good salad and the fact that they had sunflower seeds in the options was awesome. My steak was cooked perfectly. I was really happy with my side selections: rice pilaf and au gratin potatoes. I'd order them again in a heartbeat. The turtle cheesecake was a shared dessert and I was so pleased at the excellent texture. It managed to be lighter than most of the heavy commercialized recipes you find elsewhere. The waiter brought out two bowls of a Cheddar or some other type of soup and we both looked at it and called him back over, saying this sure didn't like French Onion Soup. He apologized and took the soup back. He then returned with two new bowls of the same soup! Lol. We told him we ordered French Onion soup.....so he trekked back to the kitchen and on the third time brought out the French Onion soup! Somehow he must've had the other soup on his mind that night. I had to take the rest in a to go bag, I think 35 min for a rare prime rib is a bit silly. Bag had no napkins or silverware. Prime rib was not rare. Most prime rib Connoisseurs would confirm rare is really the only way to go and i travel all over the country. It's one of my go-to meals. Quality not bad, beans and potatoes standard. I even called a second time, on day before. As it turned out, the staff did not have a seat chosen and held in advance but simply found the quietest place (in their estimation) that was available. I felt my calls were wasted. We actually needed to remove the bright light that had been placed on our table. The meal was steak and salmon with crab stuffed mushrooms. The steak was tender, and the salmon well-seasoned the right temperature and tender. The mushrooms were warm but had no real flavor very bland. The salad presentation and delivery were well done and flavorful. I had ordered an old fashion as a dinner drink and the bartender could use some schooling. Our waiter was the best part of the evening, as he was present when needed, bright, witty, and quick. read more

Date night dinner! Highly recommend making a reservation, as this place is BUSY! Our sever was amazing, attentive, and despite being busy was always available. We had the sampler as an appetizer and the petite prime rib with the table side salad and sides for dinners. The food was amazing, although we could do without the crab stuffed mushrooms (in the sampler) next time. Prime rib was perfectly cooked and sides (green beans and mashed potatoes) were delicious. I have read conflicting reviews on the lighting but in my opinion it was great. The lights were dim but we had no trouble reading the menu and the restaurant had good ambiance with several fireplaces. Or waiter Jerry told us that he works there part time which is a shame because we would prefer for him to be our waiter every time! I would highly recommend this steak house for any occasion! Haven't seen one of those in a while. Makes it nicer to see what you're getting. I opted for mashed potatoes and baked potato as my side. Didn't care for the mashed. They had a different flavor I wasn't feeling. Almost a bacon flavor which some people would probably prefer. I'll stick to the baked potato from now on. We were met by Ed the owner and led to our table. That set the tone for our meal. Attention to detail describes every aspect of our experience. Spending summers at my Grandfather's 5 hotel set high standards. Mountain Jack's is the first place in 20+ years that met that standard. Kiley, our server 5s in absolutely every area. From recommendations, to attentiveness. In every way - perfection. Food - 5. The table side salad bar unique and delicious. My wife's prime rib literally melted in my mouth. My ribeye was cooked to perfection and the whiskey and peppercorn sauce took it to the next level. Our meal was rounded out with a wonderful Alexander Valley Cab.
