I requested soy paper and they don't carry it at all. That really bummed me out. They did call before my pick up time to warn me. Out of 5 rolls, 2 of them were wrong. One of them was close, but still messed up. Missing toppings and topping added that shouldn't have been. The other roll was completely wrong. Pretty sure we were given the wrong roll. I was in Lafayette and passing by Sushi Don, since I loved this restaurant in the past and it's changed so many times since Covid I decided to take a look. The coolers are gone the miserable little bar with wilted, lettuce and bad soup is gone tables are back. Yay! The menu is almost as good as the old one just missing a few items, but expansive enough that I tried it. I am so glad we did. I had a wonderful late lunch early dinner with my husband. I'm so sorry I didn't take a picture of the menu. I had the Alaska roll which was delicious and one of the premium also delicious and surprisingly enormous.My husbands premium choice was the dragon ball. amazing. We were ordering from the pick two menu. They have an option to pick two rolls two standard rolls or one standard and one premium or two premium rolls. That option comes with either soup or salad you'll see in the pictures. I picked the salad the components of the salad were cut small enough to be eaten easily with chopsticks. I love Japanese salad dressing, but I hate struggling to get gigantic pieces of lettuce into my mouth. This was an attention to detail that I really appreciated. My husband picked soup. I'm not a big miso soup fan but even to me this miso soup is delicious. It was early so the restaurant was just us and four other tables and the service was great. I think the service will always be good since there's a button on your table to call the waiter when you're ready to order or need something. I thought that was a nice touch too. I hate having to say, I need a few more minutes repeatedly to a looming waitperson. The waiter told us that they're planning some renovations inside. Service this time has been absolute shit. 1st the wait staff forgot me, then the waitress took the order of the table next to me even though I was first. I had to call her back because she walked away and NEVER came back! She brought my soup and not my drink, not even water! So I had to call over another waiter to get me that. Headed from Indianapolis to Chicago with some coworkers, all hungry, got on Yelp to find a nearby restaurant, and, since we all like sushi, decided to stop at Sushi Don in Lafayette and try it. We got menus at the counter, sat down to review, then went back up to order. The miso soup is self serve from cafaes which gave a cafeteria vibe but worked, and a little self serve salad area with greens, carrots, mushrooms, ginger dressing etc. The ginger dressing was a little watery but the mushrooms looked really fresh, and I put some of those in my soup as well. Our group ordered several different rolls, and we it all came out rather quickly. They were a little mushy and mostly just soggy cabbage inside them. Guess it was not what i was expecting, but the flavor wasn't terrible. 5 spring rolls came in the order and i still ate 3 of them. I just expected more crispiness and other veggies inside. The sushi rolls were very filling and big but kept falling apart - Shrimp lovers roll in particular. But it was really good! Maybe this place is the only sushi spot in the area so the decent reviews are a bit deceptively unfair with nothing to compare to. I ordered the crab Rangoon and Ebi Tempura. Crab Rangoon was nothing special at all. The special sauce on top killed the deep fried crunch. And the ratio of crab to the rest was very little. And the same go for the Shrimp Tempura (Ebi). A mom and pop style sushi restaurant where you least expect it! Hidden behind a Starbucks next to an electrical plant, Sushi Don is Lafayette's hidden gem for grab and go sushi. Sushi Don doesn't only offer sushi rolls to go, they've also got a variety of hot food, little novelty items from Asia, and some of your favorite Asian snacks like Choco Pies and Melona Bars. I wanna say that Sushi Don is Korean owned because they also have some LEGIT looking kim chee available for purchase and they also offer so really good looking korean fried chicken. From my understanding, Sushi Don recently switched to a Grab-n-go joint from previously functioning as a full-on sushi restaurant. This limits what they offer. Looking at menus from a year ago, it looks like they mainly only offer sushi rolls now which was kind of a bummer. I visited here in hopes of getting some good sashimi and nigiri, but found a menu with "American Sushi" -- just a bunch of pre made rolls with different variations. I had the "Magic Mushroom" and "Spicy California Roll". They were still very tasty, but just didn't taste very authentic (which is what I was looking for). Regardless of the switch and limited menu, I would still return to Sushi Don. It's a great place to get a quick sushi fix. It's also really affordable. Ultimately, if you love "rolls" you will LOVE Sushi Don. If you're looking for more traditional sushi and sashimi you might wanna hold off and maybe call to see if they've transitioned back to their old "traditional" menu. First time in Lafayette, we were craving Asian food and decided to try this place, especially since we read they had been around for 10 years. We tried the Rose toppoki, okay it was good but it was not rose, it was regular. Which is fine, when you are craving rose you need that flavor. Next we tried their fried chicken, first they need a dipping sauce, the wings were good. Meat was moist, but the larger pieces the meat was dry. This is where a side dipping sauce or radish would have helped. Lastly we ordered he sushi plate. My son and I were going to share because we thought it's a variety of sushi, but it came out in a bowl with rice and a variety of sushi on top. That was fine, but I was really disappointed in the sushi rice. We have never had rice so sweet, it was not edible. Now maybe the people in this area like it sweet, But it was way too sweet for us. This is my public declaration of love for Sushi Don. This place has been there for me through the highs and lows of my college career and I'm grateful for them. Truly, the best sushi I've had in the US. I have never been disappointed by a roll here. My favorite is Salmon Avalanche and it consistently slaps. My soul transcends my body when I eat the Salmon Avalanche. The sushi deal they used to have on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays saved me. I wish they still did that, but the Pick 2 deal is still pretty good. The customer service here is really great too. I have come in with groups as large as 20 and they have still happily dealt with us. I have also had personal conversations with some of the waiters and they were so cool and funny. I take all of my loved ones to this place because I want to share it with them. My only complaint is the parking situation. Before COVID, if you came during a Tuesday or Thursday for dinner back when they did the deal, it was hell. But I'd move heaven and earth for Sushi Don. This is our first time visiting since they have reopened the seating area! Pre-covid: dine in seating was very crowded and service was slow. During Covid: they remodeled and put in coolers and hot stations for to go. You could come in and grab what you needed or call in an order for pickup or curbside delivery. Now: they have socially distanced tables where you can grab your food from the cold/hot stations or order from the menu at the stand and sit at the tables to eat the food. I honestly wasn't expecting to like the To-Go style but I really did! I liked being able to see all the options and pick out what I wanted. When you walk in you get a tray to load up whatever you choose from the refrigerator or heater. All my favorites were still here. The sushi seemed fresh and the soup was HOT. Change happens, but the changes to Sushi Don really don't do it for me. It used to be a sushi-centric dining room with an extensive, delicious menu of fixed-to-order. It's been turned into a grab and go place. We went there expecting to see the same restaurant that we've loved for years, but it looks like the quiet place to sit and enjoy an amazing sushi dinner is gone, replaced by a sitting area with a cooler full of pre-made sushi dishes (sort of a Trader Joe's Asian section with a few chairs and tables). Recently raised prices, annoying but still decent value and huge menu. I've noticed reduced traffic, maybe price increases making less traffic and shorter wait times? Despite many local sushi spots, there's good service, huge selection and original rolls that hit the spot here. There's been a few hiccups with other frustrated people realizing their reservation was completely skipped (I've waited 60 minutes for a table) and barging their way around the others in line to secure their table. I've noticed one lady sitting in the corner on her phone talking for over an hour - surprised that was allowed! Overall experience tho has been great for a few years now. It's definitely not worth the sushi outside of happy hour - favorites are the cream cheese fish crazy mess called the Lion King. Can't resist the Orange Dragon, Ultimate Shrimp, Super OMG, and just about all those pictured in my collection. Cheaper spicy rolls especially ones with masago like Spicy Salmon are fantastic too. Since Tokyo One is closed and Ichiban's food permit was revoked (I'm glad cuz that place was the worst experience I've had in the area) - we only have Maje and Maru as substantial rivals. Maru has the highest quality in the area but more expensive and offering a small menu. Maje is a wonderful little spot but is way limited in seating and also offers just a few great rolls without the value of Sushi-Don. I'm hoping Sushi Don gets their reservation act together to ensure people are set as easy as possible, usher those done eating out during busy hours, and maintain their value in the whole Midwest. I used to love this place when we lived in Lafayette. After the pandemic, the quality has gone down. I was craving a bibimpap, and we got something that looks and tastes nothing like it. It was a mix of transparent noodles, some Italian rice, lettuce and some weird meat on top.
