excerpt from the paperwork sent to me showing how the staff at Wilson never indicated the cost of the room, nor communicated it to me

My father was transferred to the Wilson rehab center after a stint at the hospital for congestive heart failure. He stayed with the facility for several weeks. He was generally well looked-after by the staff, who were attentive and flexible, and the staff responded to my phone calls. Near the end of his care, he was sent back to the hospital in an emergency situation, and this is where the trouble began. Unfortunately, I was not present during the emergency, as I live in California. A friend of my father's came to the facility. I was asked if I wanted to place a hold on the room. I said yes. The friend signed the paperwork. I asked about the charge for holding the room and was told it was covered by his insurance. The cost was not communicated to either myself or the friend. Three months after my father died, I received an invoice from Wilson to the tune of over $8000 for the room hold. I was shocked. At no point did anyone at the facility or in the billing department inform me 1. the insurance didn't cover it, and 2. how exorbitant the cost was. Had I been given accurate information, or any information at all, I wouldn't have placed a hold on the room. I informed the staff I was unable to pay until I completed the sale of my father's house this year. Nearly every month since, I have received a new invoice, each one more than the last. With the "service fees," the bill is now near $10,000. With each subsequent email, I asked the staff to contact me to discuss the situation and provided my phone number. Nothing. Finally, someone else from the billing department sent me the paperwork that was filled out and signed. ALL OF THE SPACES INDICATING THE DOLLAR AMOUNT FOR THE ROOM HOLD WERE BLANK. How on earth was my dad, his neighbor, or I supposed to make any kind of informed judgment if we don't know the costs? I never saw these documents, was never told by the staff at Asbury something was signed, was never sent a copy of these documents at the time of signing, never knew these documents existed. And again, the times at which the room was placed on hold was when he was in severe medical distress and not necessarily a time when someone could make an informed decision, which is why I imagine his friend signed the papers for him the second time around. But again, no one from Asbury contacted me about costs, nor spoke to the friend about costs. The care was good. But my experience trying to resolve this with the billing department has been an exercise in frustration; they are uncommunicative, unhelpful, and dishonest. I deeply regret sending my father here in his final weeks. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

DID YOU FORGET TO ADD THAT PENNY IN ON THE FIRST BILL!

Great place to live! Plenty of amenities; transportation, meals, activities, medical doctors, rehab, hospital.

Nice senior living but the LEADERSHIP here is the worst. People are over-worked with low pay.

Our family and friends visit him frequently, so we have a lot of experience seeing him and seeing the staff. We feel that he is safe and well-cared for at this facility.

When my step-mother, for whom I am guardian, needed a memory care facility he told me that as first responders are frequently called to nursing homes all over the county, he got a bird's eye view of what really happens, especially in times of stress at these facilities, which is obviously the circumstance when the paramedics are called. He said that Arden Court was one of the few places that he would recommend given everything that he'd seen over all those years. He said the staff was always in charge, clear, and calm no matter the circumstance that was being presented. So we obviously went with this informed - and candid - assessment. We were especially challenged as my step-mother had a very rare form of Alzheimer's which took away her eyesight before it took her memory. We kept her in her apartment, with assistance, for as long as we could until she was simply in need of too much daily 24-hour care. Unfortunately she was spiteful and difficult in every way. She was angry with me and everyone she encountered. From the moment that she arrived everyone on the staff, from the Executive Director all the way to her daily caretakers responded to her with love and patience. They helped me deal with her viciousness towards me and worked day in and day out to bring her onto an even keel. Everyone has been simply miraculous over the past 9 months that my stepmother has been at Arden Court. She now loves everyone on the staff, she is happy and all of the anger that she displayed towards me has evaporated. I visit regularly and she is always talkative and eager to engage me and everyone around her. To say that I am grateful for the staff at Arden Court would be an understatement. They took what was a truly dreadful situation with my step-mother and turned this time of her life into a positive and loving experience. It doesn't get any better than that.

Our experience at Montcare Potomac was deeply disappointing. My mother was admitted here to recover…read morefrom hip surgery and receive regular PT and OT. While the physical and occupational therapy teams met expectations, every other aspect of her stay fell short of professional standards. The facility lacks clear protocols or any sense of a standard schedule. Our arrival set the tone for the entire stay. No one was available to meet the ambulance, and our family was forced to wander the halls just to find a staff member. Once she was settled, the lack of oversight became even more apparent. Because my mother has dementia and cannot advocate for herself, we remained by her side. We witnessed firsthand as call buttons went ignored. When we finally stepped into the hallway to find assistance, we were often told staff members were at lunch. It feels as though the staff does the bare minimum, especially when they believe no one is watching. Memory care should never be an excuse for providing less than adequate care, yet that is exactly what we witnessed. I am particularly frustrated by what felt like a "bait and switch." I toured the facility beforehand and was shown private rooms on the first floor which are in much better condition. The second floor, where my mother was placed, is a stark contrast--peeling wallpaper, broken furniture handles, and bathrooms that feel unclean. The clinical follow-through was equally poor. Despite having a nutritionist on staff, no one ever consulted us regarding my mother's dietary restrictions. We explicitly instructed the nursing staff not to give her sugary juices to avoid spiking her blood sugar. While they acknowledged the request, they failed to follow through, delivering orange juice with her breakfast the next morning. Had we not been there to intervene, her health would have been at risk. Furthermore, basic administrative tasks were handled poorly. The social worker was asked to order a wheelchair and ordered the wrong size. While I recognize that having family advocates present can add stress to a team, the staff showed no extra concern; if anything, they backed off, seemingly assuming we would handle her care ourselves. Everyone here seems to be passing the buck, ignoring patient health, safety, and comfort. These facilities are paid significant sums by Medicare and private insurance, yet Montcare is not delivering on its promise of quality care. We have moved my mother out of this facility to ensure her safety.

MontCare Potomac:…read more We were very dissatisfied with this facility. My mother was placed here for about one month in 2024. The furniture was quite old and dilapidated -- think busted drawers and broken handles on cabinets. We worried about our mother's safety as dementia patients were allowed to wander in and out of her room.We were required to direct these dementia patients (thankfully, they were women) out of her room. The nursing station, although nearby, was understaffed and was unable to monitor patient rooms. Our mother contracted COVID-19 at this facility and when we complained to management about the strong likelihood that she got it from dementia patients wandering into her room, our concerns were dismissed outright. We were told that, "it could have been one of the nurses". When we countered that by stating if all nurses were on duty nightly (we came every night/evening), why were there no absences among the nurses? Furthermore, we asked why the facility isn't testing its staff, to which the management replied that it wasn't necessary. The management personnel just reiterated that we had no proof it was from one of the dementia patients. As our mother was elderly, the physical therapist (a young lady more concerned about her Instagram page) was totally disinterested; and in my humble opinion, did not conduct an adequate assessment to determine that my mother wouldnot receive physical therapy. If your loved one is quite elderly or very incapacitated, think twice about this facility. Its good rating does not reflect the reality.
