My mother-in-law was a temporary guest here while recovering from surgery. There were a few things that impressed me about the facilities. * The grounds are pretty extensive. There are tons of different buildings, and it seems to lend itself to various different types of active adult, assisted living, and other retirement living solutions. * The grounds are also pretty well kept. We visited in the winter primarily, so I cannot say how it looks in the spring, but it was quite scenic even then. * The meals looked to be of decent quality, though we did not partake in them ourselves. Ma didn't seem to complain about them either. * The amenities were ample, I think. Each room had a TV, though her room was shared with another resident. It was difficult to get a feel for normal daily life there. * The security was pretty tight I noticed, too, at least for motor vehicle traffic. Also, the building had a watch-person manning the front desk. The lobby included an apiary, which was inviting and cheerful. This is where my praise stops, however. I cannot say I had any positive experiences with any of the staff, outside of the front desk person. The folks at the gatehouse were usually pretty curt, but the nurses and orderlies were downright appalling. Only one I met had any kind of friendly bedside manner. The rest seemed annoyed to be there. I would not personally recommend this facility, but you should really talk to the residents to get a better perspective from life on the inside. For me, as a visitor, I was unimpressed where it mattered most: patient care and experience. read more

Skilled Nursing Facility: My mother was an inpatient at Asbury Methodist Village Skilled Nursing Facility from the end of Dec. 2022 until April 2023 for physical rehabilitation. She was a stroke victim and was admitted to Asbury with C-Diff which she acquired during her stay at the hospital. Aftertreatment, the C-Diff cleared, and she was able to participate in light physical therapy. Unfortunately, the C-Diff returned, and my mother was given another round of antibiotics, but she did not improve. By this time, she was receiving light physical therapy in her room; however, her health continued to deteriorate until she could no longer participate in physical therapy. The therapists and nurses frequently cited my mother's age (93) as a major factor in her continued decline. One evening, the sister of a patient passed by our room and asked to pray over my mother. She was an RN and told my brother and me to take her to an infectious disease doctor as my mother's situation was dire. This was just two days after we met with the doctor at Asbury who offered no solution to our mother's deteriorating medical status and could not explain why the antibiotics were not working. The social workers wanted us to move her into the nursing home as part of the facility, ignoring the C-Diff as a barrier to physical therapy. Following this new information, we decided to take our mother to an infectious disease doctor outside and independent of Asbury; however, we were required to utilize special medical transportation contracted with Asbury at our expense. The infectious disease doctor prescribed vancomycin, which is imperative to overcome C-Diff. In about 10 days, my mother recovered, but the damage was already done as the duration of the C-Diff in her system took its toll. From what I observed, the rehabilitation room is modern and contains several pieces of modern equipment. Asbury is a good place if you are young or middle aged and need to recover from a medical condition or accident which caused physical impairment. However, if you are elderly and frail, they are neither interested nor vested in your recovery. Rather, the emphasis is to move you out or into the nursing home section. Not recommended for the elderly. As for the doctor, basic knowledge (how did he not know about vancomycin and its prescription for C-Diff) was obviously lacking in addition to his limited time at the premises, thereby creating difficulty contacting him. read more

Have lived here 10 years in The Villas of Asbury. Should have moved in earlier. Our home is like a townhouse, 1500 sqft. On campus food is excellent. Activities abound. If you have an interest you'll find it here. We have a 273 seat theater and a TV station many small towns would love to have. read more

My dad was here for just a few weeks before we sprung him. I had to share this one because it was almost comical. You know...except for the part where I was pissed off. I traveled from 5 states to visit my 94 year old dad who had just broken his hip. I was told when he was transferred from the hospital to this facility by one of the higher ups that they are open all hours but that they suggest visitors stick to daytime hours, generally, to give patients time to rest. His first day in this facility, I get to the front door of his building, around 8 -8:30 am. The front of the building has a glass facade, with sensor activated glass doors. So, I walk into the foyer and ....doors don't open. I'm itching to get in, I have a limited window to spend with him, just a few days. Of course, looking through this wall of glass, I can see there's a woman at the desk, sitting about 10' away inside on the left hand side. I'm walking around the foyer, pacing, trying to get her attention. I wave and she sees me and shrugs me off, as if to say 'nothing I can do here!' I'm stuck standing there.... I see there is a button to press for assistance, which I do, but nothing happens. Tried it several times. I pressed it and spoke into it, pressed it and waited, no one came on an intercom or anything. And no instruction beyond "Press the button for assistance". I'm still thinking 'How the heck do I get into this place and why isn't this person helping me?' After continuing to wave and try to get her to at least tell me what I need to do to get in, her body language conveys annoyance. She finally stomps over to the other side of the glass doors and starts TALKING to me... THROUGH the glass. And, yes, folks, she's ALSO wearing a mask. And she continues gesturing like she's annoyed with me. I guess because I'm not a mindreader and I don't know what to do when the doors don't open and the call for assistance button doesn't work. She finally opens the automatic doors from her side and is clearly annoyed with me - and says: "I think it's obvious you need to walk near the door to make it open" ??? I'm shocked because, first of all, I'm in this foyer pacing like a caged tiger. Secondly, after I got in and I asked another employee at a desk down the hall way on the right if there is another entrance I should be using, that I could not get in this am, and the woman at the desk ignored me. She said the doors don't open until 9! I thought, wow, that would've been nice to know. Couldnt this front desk lady have operated in kindness and politely told me that? How it would've saved them this awful review.... Watching her ignore me for the last 5 minutes and thinking 'WOW, that's an all-time record to have such a poor impression of a place and I haven't even set foot inside yet....'. I'm usually very calm but when this person laid into ME for not being able to access the building while she IGNORED me, I made it very clear that when she's "talking" to me through glass ---and with a MASK on--- the message is not OBVIOUS. After I stated that, she became polite again, but....too late, lady. You were incredibly rude and not a person who should be greeting people at a front desk. And incidentally, after 9 am the doors opened with no effort...as long as you walked toward them they opened. This lady at the desk is a total crackpot. read more

My father was transferred to the Wilson rehab center after a stint at the hospital for congestive heart failure. He stayed with the facility for several weeks. He was generally well looked-after by the staff, who were attentive and flexible, and the staff responded to my phone calls. Near the end of his care, he was sent back to the hospital in an emergency situation, and this is where the trouble began. Unfortunately, I was not present during the emergency, as I live in California. A friend of my father's came to the facility. I was asked if I wanted to place a hold on the room. I said yes. The friend signed the paperwork. I asked about the charge for holding the room and was told it was covered by his insurance. The cost was not communicated to either myself or the friend. Three months after my father died, I received an invoice from Wilson to the tune of over $8000 for the room hold. I was shocked. At no point did anyone at the facility or in the billing department inform me 1. the insurance didn't cover it, and 2. how exorbitant the cost was. Had I been given accurate information, or any information at all, I wouldn't have placed a hold on the room. I informed the staff I was unable to pay until I completed the sale of my father's house this year. Nearly every month since, I have received a new invoice, each one more than the last. With the "service fees," the bill is now near $10,000. With each subsequent email, I asked the staff to contact me to discuss the situation and provided my phone number. Nothing. Finally, someone else from the billing department sent me the paperwork that was filled out and signed. ALL OF THE SPACES INDICATING THE DOLLAR AMOUNT FOR THE ROOM HOLD WERE BLANK. How on earth was my dad, his neighbor, or I supposed to make any kind of informed judgment if we don't know the costs? I never saw these documents, was never told by the staff at Asbury something was signed, was never sent a copy of these documents at the time of signing, never knew these documents existed. And again, the times at which the room was placed on hold was when he was in severe medical distress and not necessarily a time when someone could make an informed decision, which is why I imagine his friend signed the papers for him the second time around. But again, no one from Asbury contacted me about costs, nor spoke to the friend about costs. The care was good. But my experience trying to resolve this with the billing department has been an exercise in frustration; they are uncommunicative, unhelpful, and dishonest. I deeply regret sending my father here in his final weeks. Avoid, avoid, avoid. read more

The expenses related to hiring, onboarding, and ensuring employee satisfaction to maintain retention can place a significant financial burden on the organization. Our mother was admitted to AMV Wilson Center on 07/09/2024 after major L3-S1 back surgery and an acute kidney injury received during surgery. Within 1 month of care, she is functioning independently and ready for discharge home. My husband and I moved to AMV in 2017 when we were in our mid-70s in order to support our daughter and grandkids during a divorce. Had it not been for that we would have waited another 2-3 years. Now, looking back, we are so happy we moved when we did. We've been able to take advantage of all the wonderful programs for fitness and social interaction and are confident we are healthier and happier for that move. Making new friends, not only in our particular neighborhood, but across the campus has been a delight. And they've now been our friends for 7 years! What do we enjoy the most? The beauty of the campus, the TOTAL wellness program, service opportunities and, of course, our neighbors and friends. I moved to Asbury in November, 2021 and couldn't be happier with my choice. Having looked at other retirement communities in the area I chose Asbury for a number of reasons. It is a continuing care community and the campus if absolutely gorgeous! With paths around both ponds I get renewed being surrounded by nature it its seasonal glory. There are more than 120 species of birds, a certified habitat area, pollinator gardens - and I saw a fawn on my early morning walk this morning. It has been easy to make friends whether in exercise or brain health activities, educational classes, musical offerings, or just walking around campus. I love being able to take advantage of cultural activities in the greater DC area while still living in such a peaceful surrounding. read more

Asbury has been so much better than I expected, frankly. My wife was ready to move in, and I was not, afraid it would make me feel like an old person. My wife was right and I was wrong. Then along came Covid, and we were stunningly well taken care of. Friends in another retirement community were told that if they left their building during Covid, they would not be allowed back in, since the building contained assisted living and nursing home patients as well as them. All we had to do at Asbury was screen back in--15 seconds--when we came back onto campus. Since then activities have picked up and life has returned to normal. Nothing can ever take away the beauty and the peace found on our 140 acres with two lovely ponds and glorious lit fountains at night. For me, the best thing about Asbury is that it is a very lively place while I still feel young and healthy, but Asbury also will offer all kinds of peace and beauty when things begin to go wrong. As a medical provider and the daughter of someone living at Asbury I must say that they get mixed reviews. While they handled COVID relatively well - subsequently things have gone downhill. Such as: (1) menus are very heavy on carbs, low on proteins which is critical for seniors to avoid losing any more muscle mass. (2) few lower sodium options yet 70% of the senior population has some form of cardiovascular disease. (3) Remaining in contact with loved ones is vitally important. In the last 2 years the phones have gone down over 6 times which means each time not only can one not get through, but you don't know if your particular loved on is well or not. The activities and the campus are indeed good and I do appreciate that. But our seniors are vulnerable and have worked hard, which merits closer attention to the details that can make the difference between a good day and an challenging one. The loss of employees who help make this difference is felt greatly. We are re-evaluating this as an option for our loved one. read more

I'm a working professional who moved into AMV during Covid in 2020. The beauty of the campus - mature trees, rolling hills, ponds, a variety of buildings (nothing cookie cutter) - plus my particular apartment were the clinchers. The number of activities, the fantastic restaurants have been great. Its proximity to Route 270 means a fast clip to Bethesda, Kentlands, Rockville, and sometimes downtown DC. Tons of learning opportunities are created mainly by the residents, many of whom are highly educated former professionals. I feel connected and protected and have a high quality of life. It is a bit pricey for me but good value. read more

Bottom line - do you dislike your relatives? If not, don't send them here. My mother had a stroke and heart attack in early 2024. After a hospital stay to get her medically stable, our next step for her was an acute rehab facility to get her back on her feet. I grew up in the area, and had always heard good things about Asbury, so it was an easy choice for rehab. 1) Communication with family is not good. Coming in I was told we would have regular care plan meetings to coordinate her care. It's been 3 weeks, and the first meeting is only tentatively scheduled. I only was able to contact her nurse practitioner when I found the name and number written on a slip of paper in her room. When I called the front desk of the Wilson Center with questions I was referred to the nurses' station, where I would call repeatedly and have no one answer the phone. I do not know my mother's physical, occupational or speech therapists, and I have no way to communicate with them. 2) The place is vermin infested. I have seen mice running down the hall during daytime visits, and there are mouse traps in the room. My mother and other residents complain of hearing mice chewing in the walls at night. 3) I initially dismissed my mother's complaints that the nursing team was non-responsive; she wasn't happy with her changes in circumstances, and she complained about the nurses in the hospital. However, I have watched the nurses ignore alerts going off for other residents. I have have tried to find staff to help with one issue or another and not been able to do so. Her friends have observed the staff come in while she's eating dinner and announce that she refuses her shower and won't get one for several more days (showers are twice a week). She requires toileting help and has been left for hours after ringing for nursing help. In other facilities there's a whiteboard on the wall with the name of the nurse and tech on duty. There's none of that here. She feels filthy and dispirited. 4) In the early days of her being at the facility, I was either less aware of the issues or considering them as temporary glitches, and I was looking at Asbury for respite (short term assisted living). In doing my due diligence I discovered that Asbury is significantly more expensive than other options in the area (30%-50% more) for respite care. Bottom line: I strongly recommend you do your research. If you do send a loved one here, visit frequently and demand appropriate communication and nursing support. read more

My family member was referred here for Physical Therapy. Upon arriving here on the first day, It was an absolutey Horrible experience!! There was no person to welcome or properly intake the new arrivals. We and others arriving sat there for one Hour. We proceeded to locate the Nurses station. When approaching them they were eating and where very dismissive as we asked, "will there be anyone to assist or receive us In? We truly were very READY to leave at that point. No doctor, nurse or staff were absolutely NOWHERE in site! After a few days in, I received a call from the nurse on call that night stating that my mom had been left on the toilet seat and she attempted to get up on her own and had fallen. Thankfully she didn't get hurt after a medical check. I reported this to the So-called Nursing Director Maceline Yaya. I sent an email to her explaining this accident also, we reported an evening male nurse that was angry and rude and hung up the phone on me for no apparent reason whatsoever. Maceline Yaya never addressed this matter, never followed up or submitted any incident report instead, two weeks after this report she sent her Assistant's to attempt to resolve this issue. To No Avail! We saw Maceline Yaya in the hallway and she assured us that she would stop by my mother's room to discuss our concerns. After waiting several hours for her, we knew for sure that she didn't have any intentions on stopping by to address this at all. She has zero character, she's proven incapable and should NOT be a Director of any Healthcare facility with no concern or heart for the residents. read more

I have lived here for 3 + years and I still love it everyday! The grounds are a delight, with a big area that is a wildlife habitat. Two lovely ponds for daily walks are great. People who live here are great -- except for the rare person having a grumpy day. So many things to do -- I learned to play handbells! The gym and pool stay busy with people staying healthy. Don't be fooled by the beautiful campus. Over the years that my parents have lived in Asbury we have witnessed a marked decline in services. There have been some incredibly bad financial decisions by the management. These have resulted in them increasing costs to the resident and cutting services cause by the resulting monetary shortfall of their decisions. Some of their investment offerings to the residents almost border on scams. I believe they have even been investigated by the state government. Certainly the annuities they sold to our parents are terrible by any measure and I believe border on elder abuse. Recently we asked that an updated working fire extinguisher be in their kitchen (it was like 15 years old). We were told it would have to be done at my parent's cost. Also they wouldn't put a fire alarm in their kitchen. The excuse was it would cause to many false alarms. Uh, most apartments I see have smoke alarms in the kitchen. And yes false alarms do happen, but better to have them go off more often than to not. So when their is a life threatening problem the alarm is there..."better safe than sorry". Much better options in assisted living type places. Asbury should be investigated. read more

Very disappointed with my 89 yr old mothers stay at Asbury Rehabilitation Center. She was sent there from Shady Grove Hospital. There is a lack of communication to the family and between staff. It seems as there is not enough PT staff to handle the amount of patients they have. This was the whole reason my mom was there was to strengthen her legs after her hospitalization and the health insurance only gives a person a certain amount of days. She was left to lie in bed most of the day. I shouldn't have to take off work to take care of her, but if you don't over see the care they don't seem to worry. It took 5 days to get her a different phone that actually worked, so little communication with family and friends during her first 5 days there in quarantine for COVID. Very disappointed!! read more

My mom's friend lived here for over 10 years. She loves walking around the ponds, campus, and seeing neighbors. But says this place have changed so much for worse. Price keep going up but quality of service is going down. She said before she saw many happy faces. But now, she knows many unhappy employees and neighbors.
