It was pretty resident-centered when I moved in but the culture has changed to be much more staff-centered. They will make changes for the convenience of staff almost instantly even if they are a great inconvenience to residents, e.g., requiring residents to submit meal orders by 8 AM the day before the meal. They have been moving work normally done by staff to residents. For example, they switched trash/recycling contractors to one which will recycle much less. Residents are now collecting much of the recyclables and transporting itself to the Transfer Station. On the positive side, apartment layouts are superior to any other community I visited. It is a very friendly community.

Everybody there is sedated, they don't have any activities , they are incompetent when it comes to nursing care and they have no dietitian on staff to check food/drug interactions or ensure the people are getting good quality healthy meals and meeting nutrient needs. They make homemade meals and I'm not sure if they are ServeSafe certified (which they need to be to handle food safely). They called us several times a day every day to come up there because they don't want to entertain your loved ones. And if you refuse to sedate your loved one (like we did) they get frustrated as the patients get so bored and they talk. It was a terrible experience.

There are musical performances and other cultural and healthful activities. It's difficult for anyone to adjust to a new environment, and even more so for an elderly person with dementia. The Kensington Park staff do their best to welcome and acclimate new residents - which, with the added problem of Covid, is a challenge. They are kind and attentive, dealing with irritability and other behaviors with grace and patience. The management is very open to communication from family members and every issue is addressed. Visits from family members are easily scheduled. It's a good place.

Subsequently, I spoke to my friends' daughter who told me "since her mother broke her arm, she was not participating in activities, and was too tired from too many visitors. The supervisor's recommendation was no visitors other than once a week from each daughter, as per my friend. My friend is 97 yeaars old. The elderly NEED verbal stimulation, not isolation. My friend, the elderly lady, does not like this place and has expressed it in no uncertain terms. My experience with ideas like this ends in the life of the elderly person in less than 8 weeks. My friend (the daughter) has placed her mother in a prison because caing for her mother is an inconvenience.

The staff are attentive and caring and he still has more autonomy than he would in many other places. He did NOT want to go to a nursing home despite his increasing frailty . He requires assistance with all ADLs and medications. He is always well groomed, clean and in good spirits. All the staff address him by name and treat him with great respect and affection. His speech is difficult to understand because of strokes but they are uniformly patient and helpful. Three mornings a week we are together but I do stop in at other times and he is ALWAYS well cared for. Here is an opportunity for socialization that he didn't have at his independent facility in NJ. Meals are in the dining room; many different daily activities. He and I could not be happier with Grand Oaks And we feel that the VALUE is excellent. The staff is loving and caring to the patients requiring care there. Attentive to their needs in a timely fashion. Personally, Peter the regular nurse on day duty is excellent. The physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist provided exceptional care in getting her ready to return home. The facility is very clean and provides a safe environment for those who stay there. The food they serve is prepared by a chef and is not institutional food you find in many hospital centers. Mom had no complaints and enjoyed her meals. Administrate process was very easy getting her in and releasing her. Chris was very helpful.
