This place has been going down hill for years despite somehow opening a second location on the boardwalk. Here's the short gripe: A Cold brew iced coffee cost $5 (extra of course for non dairy option--at this price, what??). Understood it's not hot over ice, but it's a pretty inexpensive difference to prep a batch of cold brew which is simply soaking the same grinds over night. My complaint though? They give a MEASURED 4oz of coffee as their iced cold brew in a now 16oz cup (down from 20oz last year). Milk, ice, whatever else you want in the cup is just filler. This is store policy. When asked about this, the employees are nasty and unapologetic, citing their 4oz policy and literally offended that people could be upset with this poor excuse for coffee. I've attached pics of what you get with a cold brew order--mind you, this is a 16oz cup WITH ice and WITH milk included. I wanted them to thrive but this is absurd. Save your money. This is a little kiosk type place in the Asbury Park "hall". The guys were friendly, the coffee was really good and it was priced like any fancy coffee place: $4.25 for a large iced coffee with a shot of espresso. They had a few pastries available and no place to sit down, but the beach is literally right outside their doors. Don't come in her looking for double whipped, unicorn anything! The coffee is a standalone success. Each year when we visit Asbury Park, we stop here. I could smell it a block down the boardwalk: fresh brewed coffee! You can get 1,2 or 3 shots expresso. My 1 shot cappuccino was just perfect; hot and rich. I've been here 2 mornings in a row (vacationing in the area) following my early morning boardwalk "walk." Love the location because it's on the water, under a large archway out of the sun, breezy and near other shops. We finished our last sips while taking in the fabulous wall art along the boardwalk just outside. Served in paper cups (and for eco-reasons, straws are discouraged for cold beverages). We stop in here on almost EVERY Asbury Park visit, year round. Honestly, the Roastery is a bona fide draw for us, especially for our off-season Boardwalk strolling. I'm not a coffee snob, opting for a naked cup of joe over any of the fancy coffee beverages, but I sure do appreciate a fresh, good quality brew! My husband, the one with the sweet tooth, likes the iced coffee drinks and lattes here. On one stop this summer, he ordered a coffee shake confection that included peanut butter and chocolate. It tasted - no surprise - like a liquid peanut butter cup. The Roastery has a modest choice of pastries, including scones and doughnuts, that are a cut above. Today, my husband enjoyed one the their apple turnovers. I snuck a bite. Thumbs up. It was crispy and flaky and tasted as if it was made from real ingredients, not some ersatz ghastly industrial stuffed triangle of despair. I make sure I visit Asbury Park Roastery whenever I'm in Asbury Park... nothing like an iced coffee on the beach even if it melts pretty quickly. The iced coffee is strong (seemingly darkly roasted) but has no bitter aftertaste. Hit it with a little bit of simple syrup and BOOM. I've never had their other roasted coffees but I was tempted to purchase a bag but ultimately decided not to since they didn't have any lightly roasted variations. read more

I'm not sure if they are trying match the Starbucks coffee profiles which aren't good but for a small roaster shop I thought beans would be distinctive. I bought El Salvador light roast whole coffee beans and was disappointed to find that the this light roast profile is basically a dark roast for any other small coffee shop. If the light roast is this dark then the dark roast must be close to charcoal. The roasts are fresh which is a great. I love asbury park, I'd love to see them succeed and open more shops but as a coffee connoisseur I'll pass on this. read more

The quality of coffees and teas is Starbucks quality (for me Starbucks sets the quality of high standard), but the prices are more reasonable. The menu is large enough to pick anything for your taste. I tried their ice coffee and hot tea. Iced coffee tasted freshly brewed and hot tea was made from loose leave tea and had a great taste. I love that they have umbrellas for the benches in front of the cafe even tough it's inside convention center. It creates a uniques outdoor ambiance while enjoying the cool air inside. read more

I am a barista and have been for three years as of writing this. My partner and I tried this place twice and have had a mixed time. The first time was a decaf iced latte with white mocha and vanilla. The flavor was at the bottom but I stirred it. It was good. The second time, we got frozen cocoas. They were okay, but too much cocoa powder, like it didn't fully get blended. Let me start by saying that AP Roastery is *not* Starbucks. Don't come here looking for your Venti Ultra Supremo Espresso Latte overly sugary and burnt tasting coffee-esque beverage. No, this place is for REAL coffee - something that doesn't taste like it's been roasted with mesquite briquettes. The stuff here is perfectly roasted with a ton of character, a lot of it being from a single origin (not a blend). If you're one of the many people out there who think Dunkin or the aforementioned Starbucks is the pinnacle of coffee, seriously - you need to come here. AP Roastery primarily focuses on their vast array of fresh roasted coffee, which ranges in price from ~$8 a lb to upwards of $19 or so for stuff that's really rare. For tea drinkers, there's also a nice selection of craft teas in a looseleaf section. The owner is an absolute sweetheart and both her and her staff are more than willing to make suggestions based on your preferences, such as a more fruity, bold, chocolatey, etc coffee. The coffee is quite good. I was at the Convention Hall location and ordered a bagel toasted with butter. When I got to my destination and opened the bag, I found that the bagel was barely toasted and that they had just thrown in a few packets of butter. What kind of business does this? It was a rocky start to AP Roastery and I's relationship - a few hiccups in ensuring I got dairy-free milk! But since then, I have had great experiences with the place, I love the owner and I am OBSESSED with the Hibiscus Lime Iced Tea; I am talking about getting it every day last summer obsessed. The coffee is amazing, the store smells great, and it is reasonably priced. When I am in AP, the first place I will go to for coffee is AP Roastery over the other places mainly due to the quality of the coffee as well as the atmosphere and service provided. The staff is kind, courteous, and they are also really patient, which is great for me because I can never decide on what I want to drink! I've been coming here for the fresh-roasted coffee for a couple of years now, and I'm still amazed every time I make a fresh pot. I never understood how people can drink their coffee black, but I think that's the best way to enjoy most of the coffees from here. Some are improved with just a touch of half & half to help some of the flavors come out. All of the coffees are expertly roasted, and it comes through in the flavor of every cup. The owner is happy to make recommendations and tell you what to expect from each variety. I couldn't ask for more from a roaster. She also has an excellent variety of organic teas, and although I'm not a tea drinker myself, I've tasted a few and they are very good. This place had the worst customer service ever. I asked for a two shot iced espresso with milk. I was handed a luke warm espresso in a shot glass. When I asked for another cup of ice, I was rudely refused an extra cup , even when I offered to return my plastic shot glass. I was leered at by 7 other caffeine freak employees. Even the manager refused to give me a large cup. As I looked around the shop, I was the only customer out of about 15 others who was forced to drink out of a tiny cup. Five starts because despite the sometimes slow service (to be fair, 1. they are usually busy and 2. who is in a hurry when you're on the boardwalk??) the espresso is so flippin' tasty that I can't enjoy a mediocre Starbucks shot ever again. The flavor is superb. I also have them grind me a bag of medium roast beans for home about twice a month. Puts Dunkin Donuts and other chains to shame. I was out and about one evening, and realized that I was out of coffee at home, so I had them grind me a bag and ended up carrying it around with me all night at Anchors Bend and Beach Bar. Was standing in a croud of people watching a band, and almost every time someone walked by, I'd hear "Wow. I smell coffee. It smells amazing!!" Yep. I was a walking advertisement for the night. I have never been to the location off of the boardwalk, but now seeing that it exists, I will have to visit. read more
