I went to Asha in Oakland and loved it; I was so excited to stumble upon this one in Berkeley! Their teas are so fresh and fragrant. You can really taste the tea in every drink. This is different and much better from other boba tea places where the "tea" just tastes like flavored sugar. I love their fruit teas and chose a pineapple one this time. The others in my group got a kiwi tea and a hot jasmine tea with almond milk (note: they don't have soy milk). I tried the kiwi tea and it was also very good. Their fruit teas rotate based on what is in season. The space is also nice and clean. Staff is nice and helpful. Drinks come out fast. I ordered through the screen at the front and they called out my name for the order, so it was minimal interaction with the workers. The ambiance is some of my favorite, very lowkey place with wooden simple tables and I would love doing work here. I got the HK Coffee Milk Tea with ice and boba, and the blueberry green tea with less ice and unsweetened and boba. The coffee milk tea was still kinda warm which was off putting, but overall just tastes like normal coffee and boba. During the pandemic they have a kiosk set up with a plexiglass shield, which made super hard to hear the cashier, but I still appreciate this safety feature. Based on their photo menu, we picked out a few pastries: CREAM PUFF - Hojita - $? I didn't get to have this because I gave it to my sis. She told me it was very good--custardy, dense filling. It's tiny though. I don't know the price but it's probably at least $5. ECLAIR - $6 each I chose both of the flavors they had: + BLACK SESAME + DULCE DE LECHE Both had fillings that were definitely of their flavors and I liked how custardy and thick the filling was. Each eclair was topped with a sugary and glittery thick ribbon of fondant? Sure its pretty but its just more sugar that I didn't really care for, so I peeled that off. I'm not a fan of these types of pastry shells (like cream puffs) cuz to me it doesn't taste like anything. But the filling I enjoyed. MATCHA DARK CHOCOLATE COOKIES - $? These came in a pack of 2. They taste like chewy chocolate brownie cookies, filled with matcha cream. I really enjoyed it. I don't know the price but it's definitely at least $5. I don't know, but for 5 items, my total came out to be a whopping $30. I don't know how much the Cream Puff nor the cookies were because they didn't label so on the menu. One of my Berkeley favorites. Would usually recommend this place as a study spot, but as of 7/14 they don't have WiFi. Fortunately I didn't need it that afternoon, so I was able to enjoy the place without much of a crowd too. Their teas and drinks are all pretty good, though a bit pricey. My lychee fruit tea with grass jelly had a very large piece of jelly that made it hard to drink. Other than that solid. Also, their new speaker (for communicating with customers through glass) is aimed at their main seating table - becomes somewhat irritating after a bit. Asha doesn't need me to write another review for them. Just look at the number and the average review score to get a sense of what people think. I have been to asha multiple times and they are very consistent. I have enjoyed the variety of drink types from teas (regular and milk) to matcha to fruit tea mixtures. The boba is always on point, chewy and not overly sweet. I think overall my recommendation is 1) matcha 2) milk/tea+ fruit 3) tea. One of the few places that I change up my drink choice every time I'm here just so I can experience more things. Staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is calming. A great place to work (and nice now that places are a bit more open). Tip: I will say that I generally don't change the sweetness level of drinks (and I'm usually a 50% sweetness person) and they are a good level. The workers were definitely friendly! Just a heads up, this side of Berkeley may be hard to find parking but I honestly parked across some part of campus if you keep driving straight. Asha teahouse is hands down one of my favorite boba places ever. It's really unique because they truly focus on the quality of the tea. They don't try to mask the tea flavor with copious amounts of sugar and toppings. Most of the drinks don't come with a lot of sweetener in it but they do offer a bottle of sweetener near the lids/straws for you to self-adjust. I usually get the matcha latte with boba. You can watch them whisk the matcha right there and the flavor really shines in the drink. The sweet boba at the bottom is always warm, which I absolutely love. I don't get boba (the pearlsat most places I go to but Asha is one of the few exceptions. There are a few communal tables here but seating tends to fill up pretty quickly. I also really love the aesthetic. There's actual a book displayed in the front that takes you step by step through how they designed and put the teahouse together, from the charred wooden panels to the wooden tables. It really is such a work of art. Covid update: I always order online and expect the drink to be ready in around 20 min. I'm sad that I can't sit and enjoy how beautiful the store is but still very happy to get my favorite tea in California! A recent favorite of mine is the hojicha latte. I ordered ahead for pickup, so kudos to the baristas who made the order earlier than my scheduled pickup time. I got a strawberry black tea, large, cold (no ice), half sweetness, black tea, with a compostable straw; the compostable cup charge of $0.25 is mandatory and Asha now has a sign in the shop explaining that they had been providing compostable ware before City of Berkeley began requiring them to charge for single-use containers, but they have now decided it is becoming too expensive for them to absorb the cost. They currently only have three seasonal fruit tea flavors available - blueberry green tea, pineapple oolong tea, and strawberry black tea. The 50% sweetness felt like a good level if you want it to not be super bitter but still be able to taste the tea and the strawberry bits they infused. I thought the tea was good, but I don't know that I would consider it worth the money to pay about $6.50 or higher for the large size which is what I did - the standard size cups are pretty small. They do have a bathroom available, some merch for sale such as little pins, chocolates from other stores, and baked goods provided by Bake Sum. read more

Solid boba spot in the Downtown Berkeley area- where were all these places when I went to school here?!?! They were crowded but there was only a short line around 1pm on a Sunday. I wanted to order their Hong Kong Milk Tea, but you have to get it with whole milk only. The default for their milk drinks is whole milk, so make sure you make the swap if you're lactose intolerant. During my first in store visit about a year ago I ordered a matcha and didn't realize it came automatically sweetened (disappointing for a high end tea spot) but the staff were unfriendly and unhelpful and I ended up tossing it. Nowhere to sit that day so we had to take our tea to go after all. Today had the day off decided to go with my husband for a sit down tea again. We purchased $259 in loose leaf tea. I received a complimentary hojicha. I asked for a light steeping (though apparently it is mixed from a concentrate). I received the drink too hot to drink and too strong for me so asked for a splash of milk. Bar staff (again unfriendly) made a show about asking management and measured out the 2 tablespoons of cold milk and chastized me to order a "milk tea" next time. I was embarassed and this pretty much ruined my experience. Two top tables were full of single seated students on laptops so not much ambiance for sitting either -we didn't stay long. Straws for boba are no good--very malleable. More importantly, their cups are not made for boba. I had to squeeze my straw through and that warped the end making it so hard to suck up boba.. Why is there a lid that wasnt made for boba straws? get memed....Only other place that uses cups like these is the equally pretentious boba guys. Also I tried to order pure hojicha tea ($3) which is clearly on the menu and plastered on their wall...but they said they couldn't do that and could only place my order as "hojicha latte without milk" ($4.50) so get memed again... Their matcha latte seems to be popular but it wasnt super foamy and became very watery milk after half an hour. Perhaps I should order it cold next time. So far, I only liked their hk milk tea. I can't stress enough how much I like Asha's matcha latte (I usually get mine with oat milk and lightly sweetened). Usually, the matcha doesn't stand out enough, but here it takes center stage without being overwhelming. I get mine with half sugar and it's fantastic warm or cold! The tea house also has a trendy vibe to it, although I wouldn't recommend studying here because the wifi was a lil sketchy and there aren't any outlets. During winter months, I like to order their hot fruit tea - the yuzu green tea and asian pear oolong tea are my favorites. They are not sweet and has a well balanced flavor between the fruit and the tea. In summer time, their iced matcha latte or iced hojicha latte are my usual orders and I get them with boba occasionally. Their latte is creamy and has a strong tea flavor which I really enjoy. My first impression of Asha Tea House was that the ambiance was pretty nice - it's a small but clean cafe that seems to be a comfortable spot for studying. I was helped by a really friendly cashier, so the service here is spot on too. I got the jasmine milk tea with no sugar and no ice, and in my opinion it was just okay. Unlike other milk tea stores that use powdered milk, Asha Tea House uses actual milk and makes their boba very fresh (you can tell by the soft, chewy texture of the boba), which was really nice. But what I didn't like was that the tea flavor was not very strong - the milk tea tasted slightly like jasmine but ultimately tasted a little watery. The drink was pretty pricey too, as it was $6 for a large cup, and with no ice, they added less of the drink in the cup. I really appreciate how clean the ingredients are and how they incorporate fresh fruit purées into their drinks!
